BREAKING: Luka Doncic Signs 3-Year Extension With Los Angeles Lakers | Full Details & Reaction

Breaking news. Luca Donic has agreed to a three-year $165 million extension with the Los Angeles Lakers. Welcome into this breaking news edition of the Lakers report by Chad Sports. The Lakers get their biggest move of the off season out of the way. We’re going to break down the full details here of the Dodic extension, what it means for the Lakers going forward. You’re watching the Lakers Report by Chat Sports. Jeffrey Cooperstein here with you guys. And it is official as Luca has signed the contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers. And early in the off season, it was kind of sketchy as to whether or not Dantic was going to put pen to paper here on an extension with LA. But as time went on, it feels like him and the front office got to work, hammered out all their differences, and they were able to come to an agreement on an extension to keep Luca in Los Angeles for the foreseeable future. And this is mission accomplished for Rob Pelinka and the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers made a bunch of solid moves this offseason. You can talk about DeAndre Aton. You can talk about Jake Laravia. You can talk about Marcus Smart. You can talk about Adutierro. This was the number one move LA had to make this off season. This was their A, B, and C priority to the point where they kind of even brushed LeBron James off to the side. Said, “We’re not giving you an extension.” So LeBron opts into the final year of his contract and we know now that this will be the final year he is playing in the purple in gold. This was the Lakers top priority this offseason to get number 77 under contract for the foreseeable future. And they did just that. They had to do it. They had no choice. They could not let Luca going in to the go into the final year of his deal opt out and become a free agent next summer. It would have caused a bunch of just unneeded chaos for the Los Angeles Lakers and they were able to hammer out a deal when early in the offseason it looked like it could have been a little bit sketchy. I mean look, this guy is for my money the second best player in the NBA. Only Nicole Joic is ahead of him. He is an absolutely mercurial offensive talent and as you’ve seen over the last couple of weeks, he’s really getting himself into peak conditioning, peak shape as well. He’s starting to take his diet and his off season very very seriously and the league is going to be put on notice because I think the Lakers are getting a very motivated and frankly an angry Luca Donic on the basketball court this off season and it’s a scary sight for the NBA. He’s got his money now and he’s going to be in shape. Hopefully he can stay healthy for the rest of this season and put together a special special year. I think Luca can win MVP this season, man. And it could get really, really fun around Hollywood during the 2526 NBA season. I think you’re getting a guy who is going to put the league on notice, even if he hasn’t already. And this to me really does signal a passing of the torch of the Lakers franchise from LeBron James to Luca. You obviously have had the Lakers are the most storied franchise in NBA history. You’ve gone from the likes of Jerry West to Kareem Abdul Jabbar to Magic Johnson to Shaq to Kobe and now to LeBron. And now you’re passing it off to Luca who when it’s all said and done very well could be among one of the top 15, maybe even 10 best players to ever play NBA basketball. And I know he’s already 26 and he’s done some things in the league that have never been seen before. and I think he’s going to continue to build on that legacy and there’s no better team to do it than with the Los Angeles Lakers who are the flagship franchise here of the NBA. We can also take a look at some of the other moves the Lakers have made around Luca this off season and I do think all of these moves were made with Luca in mind. DeAndre Aton signed that two-year $16 million deal with the Lakers this off season and Marcus Smart signed a two-year 11 million contract with LA. And in the case of both Aon and Smart, Luca was an integral part in their recruiting process for them to come to Los Angeles. I know he called Marcus Smart personally and made the pitch for him to come play alongside him. The Lakers desperately needed a point of attack defender because when you have Luca and Reeves, no one’s accusing those guys of being all NBA defenders. So what did the Lakers do? They just added a former defensive player of the year and all NBA defender in Smart. Yeah, they losing Dorian Finny Smith certainly hurt for Los Angeles, but they added Jake Laravia who’s going to come off the bench and play a pretty pivotal role for them as well. So this is what the Lakers current roster looks like as we sit right here in the first days of August. You have Luca and Reeves who I think are going to be your starting backcourt alongside Hachimura and LeBron James at the wing with DeAndre Aton out at the center. And off the bench, you’ll have Marcus Smart and Gabe Vincent. You’ll have Bronny and you’ll have RJ Davis at the two. You’ll have Lavia Dalton Connect at the three. You’ll have Adutierro and Jared Vanderbilt at at your bigger wing at the four. And then Jackson Hayes at your backup five, Christian Koko on the two-way as well if the Lakers need to use him at the center. This is a team that absolutely can’t compete. This is a team that, yes, the Western Conference is difficult, but when you have number 77, you can go out there and win any given night. He’s a guy who gives you a chance regardless of who you’re playing. It doesn’t matter if you’re going up against a team like the Knicks. If you’re going up against a team like Oklahoma City, it simply does not matter. When you have this guy on the court, you have a chance to win that ball game. And that’s the most exciting thing about Luca in my opinion. So, grade the extension for me down there in the comment section. A, B, C, D, or F. What grade would you give this Luca extension? For me, it’s obvious. It’s an easy A. When you’re getting a top five player, you give him whatever money he wants in whatever term he wants. And the Lakers clearly did that here in August. So, congrats to Luca. Congrats to the Lakers for getting this deal done. And in just 28 games with Los Angeles after the trade from the Mavericks, Luca played pretty damn well after struggling a little bit out of the gate to find his legs. He did return from that calf strain uh in his first couple of games. He kind of struggled to shoot, but he ended up shooting almost 38% from three with the Lakers in 28 regular season games where he averaged 288 and 7 and a half. And look, when you look at Luca’s career numbers, those it pretty much aligns right with his career numbers. I believe for his career, he’s averaging 28.6 points. So, it basically is right alongside what he has done his entire career. And this guy is basically, for my money, one of the faces of the NBA. I mean, in the last couple of weeks, he has just gone on his Jordan brand tour, if you will, in Europe and around America. Now, he’s heading back to Slovenia here shortly to participate in Euro Basket 2025, but you’re get you’re simply getting a top three player in the league. I think he’s the second best player. And yeah, we can talk about the playoff series. Okay, this was not Luca’s best series that he has played in his career. Still put up pretty damn good numbers, though. 30 points, seven re or uh seven assists, six boards. Didn’t shoot it great, didn’t play great defense. And I think as a whole, the Lakers were just kind of ready for their season to be over. They were kind of ready to go make these offseason moves and they were ready to set themselves up for success here in the future. And I think Luca will be the first one to tell you that he just didn’t play as well as he could have in that playoff series. I think I gave him like a B minus. And a B minus series for Luca still mean still means he’s averaging uh 37 and five. and not the best efficiency either. But I hope that him playing with Slovenia here in the next couple of months where he’s going to go on uh a tour with Euro to go play in Euro Basket where he’s going to play with some of his best friends and he’s going to be playing competitive basketball. I mean guys, these games I hope you you’ll end up getting to watch. They are very competitive. Like these are not preseason exhibition games. These games count and these guys are playing. You have Jokic playing for Serbia. You have Giannis playing for Greece. like all of the best European players are playing in this tourney. So, they’re going to take it very seriously and hopefully that allows Dantic to stay in shape to continue his body transformation that he’s been going through over the summer and we’ll get some much needed hoops under his legs here uh right before the season starts because like I said earlier, the Lakers have a big road ahead of them this season, but it starts and ends with number 77 Luca Dot. So, I’m very glad Rob Pelinka, the Lakers, Bill Duffy, and all parties involved were able to come to an agreement to keep Luca in LA.
