NFL Changed the First Down | Jessica Benson Show
The first look at the new virtual measurement system that we had debut during last night’s game, which is the Sony Hawkeye. Six 8K cameras being used to judge the ball’s position in games. Now, RIP index cards. A really sad day for what? What stores do we have that still sell index cards? Office Max, Staple. Didn’t Staples go out of business? Probably because they knew they weren’t going to have people coming and buying index cards anymore to measure first downs. I bet you get a bunch of index cards at the Costco. I bet you could bulk Walmart. You could probably order them on Amazon. You can if you you must. Anyway, this is like the NFL’s version of tennis baseball measurement systems that we’ve seen used over the last year or so. Uh the chain gang is still there as a backup in case the cameras fail. I actually don’t love this. They have to fix the animation. They have the animation back. Do something. Do something else. It’s so bowling alley. Like it is like a bowling alley moment. Come on. What What do you want him to do? Give us something fun. So make it so actually make it bowling alley. Like Yeah. Give us give us the animation that comes to make that okay the first part look like a bowling alley. At least give the payout of some like fun little like penguin sweeping in and being like success or boo if it’s not penguin. Wouldn’t it be zebra? I don’t know. I think of a penguin when I think of bowling alleys for some reason. Oh, I was thinking about the refs. Oh, this is an officiating thing. So, it can be both of them. The zebras. Both of them are black and white. So, like you can do do that. Have some zebras. Have some penguins. A penguin riding a zebra. Figured it out. Penguin riding a zebra to the marker. hops off, somersaults, and goes first down or holds the fin up for for fourth down because honestly, the chains were good at their jobs. So, you got to make this work for me. I get it. We are We are a society where everything has to be as efficient as possible. And if this shaves off a few seconds, like the chains weren’t getting it wrong. The chains were successful. The ball spotting was the issue. Okay. But the chains were the chains were just fine. But if you’re you you can’t have one without the other, can you? Now you have the spotting and then the virtual system confirms. Yeah. But the chains used to be the confirmation. But it’s not like the chains were getting it wrong. But the spotter is getting it wrong. Sure. So that’s why you had to unfortunately for the chains, they’re too connected to the spotter. The chains are going to be like Blockbuster and Beanie Babies. They’re going to they’re going to take people in five years. these young young people, the youths, and they’re going to say like, “What’s this?” And it’s going to be like a landline telephone, and they’re like, “I don’t know.” And then they’re going to be like, “What’s this?” And it’s going to be like a Furby. And they’re like, “I’ve never seen that.” And they’re going to be like, “What’s this?” And it’s going to be a chain. And they’re going to say, “I don’t know. We’re losing our recipes. We’re losing our history.
The NFL changed the way they determine a first down with their virtual measurement system. No longer will they use the ‘chain-gang’ as their primary measurement tool.
Jess and CJ react to the first look of the new system from the NFL Preseason.

Is this based on where the ref spots the ball?
The Bills could’ve used this in the AFC Championship game 😂
Bowling alley? Are you kidding me? Great idea, it works perfectly with what now amounts to 7 on 7 flag football. Animation, that's a great idea. Let's do this. Let's send everybody home and play it through AI.
