Tim Ko on this terrific Tuesday. How we feeling? Hang on. There’s 66 replies of two people arguing in my mentions based off a ringer video that was posted when I went on Zack Low Show yesterday. So, I’m just going to catch up. Okay. You’re going to catch all 66. Got it. replies from two people. All right. Cool. I just I feel like if they’ve been arguing that long, it must be really important. Really important. Let us know how many Did we not tweet the show? I did. You did? I did. I can’t find it. I had a real like kind of outof body experience this morning. So, I decided, normally I don’t do this um just because, but I was listening to music while I was in the shower and getting ready for work today and everything. And you know that song that’s on like every Instagram video now? It’s a It’s a piano and it’s like I don’t Well, Jesse and Jeff know it. They’re dancing off camera. Well, any It’s It’s just log on to Instagram. It’s on every video right now. It’s like a Tik Tok song or like one of those ones they put. Well, that’s what I thought, right? But as I’m in the shower, that song came on my phone. I was like, “What?” And it turns out I’ve had that song on my Spotify for a real long time. It’s called Take My Hand by this guy named Matt Barry. Came out like 15 years ago. So I I’ve just known that song for an un untold number of years. So that’s why it sounds so familiar to me. Anyway, it was a real weird experience. Like I like like DJ Record Scratch stepped out of the shower to check my phone. Like it was really weird. Real experience. Yeah. And then I slipped on the floor and hit my head and woke up in Munchkin Land. Stein with this. Can I tell Can I tell a music story? Yes. Oh, I don’t often tell music stories, so I feel I know. That’s why I’m like this is important. In 2025, we can listen to any song we want at any time, but this will this will not surprise you guys. I’m old school. I still love when a song comes on the radio that you weren’t expecting. It’s like it’s like, you know, when I was a youth, that was like it was a great feeling when just, you know, a song you you had no control over it and the song you wanted. So on my drive down here, I was listening to the 80s on eight on SiriusXM radio. Needed a jolt. Needed a jolt for the show. I’m admittedly, you know, my gas tank is not near full right now. So what comes on? Eye of the tiger. Oh wow. Eye of the tiger. Eye of the tiger. It was great. I needed it. It was a massive It was a surprise. You ever see the new girl episode where Jessica Day teaches the kids to play that song on the bells? Oh, I did not. It’s a good episode. What show is it? No. Say, does he know what that show is? You weren’t You weren’t a big New Girl fan. I don’t believe so. Did you know? When was that on? That was in like 2010. I was covering Dirk Nitzky at the time. You were You were up to something a little more important. He said he was locked in. Okay. He said he was locked in. I bet I bet Dirk knows what New Girl is. I would bet. I bet he does. I bet he does. I bet not. Don’t make me Don’t make me. As far as I Dirk, come on the show. Dirt Nitzki is in far Dirk Nitzky at last report was in Spain playing paddle with former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Steve Nash at as appeared on former who manager? Former Liverpool manager. You mean Dortmund? No, I mean Liverpool. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I know who Jurgen Klopp is. He coached. He managed Dortman. Y’all can talk about that later. Uh, I do want to let you know today, gentlemen, we’re going to have some fun today throughout the course of our show, and you can answer in the chat as well. Uh, it’s National Wing Day. Uh, so I want you to put in the chat what your favorite wing is and also answer the question as we go out through the today’s show. Uh, is a boneless wing actually a wing? Let us know in the chat. We’re going to argue about that later on. We obviously can’t name places, but what I can bravely say is that flats are way, way, way, way, way infinitely superior to the drums. We’ll talk about that later because that’s that’s a terrible take. Um, lemon pepper wet and Yes. You think flats are better than drumsticks, too? Flats are y like in a league of their own. Y are wild, man. Ste, you got a a thought on that. Flats or drums? Um, I really shouldn’t answer that question because with my Buffalo background, I don’t know that my answer would be popular. So, I am going to That doesn’t matter. What What’s What’s your answer? I mean, I am No, I don’t want to discuss it. Oh my gosh. Wow. Wow. What a tease. What a tease. Unbelievable. Um, this uh super chat already. Uh, we’ll get this one to Stein. Uh, night 405 with the dollar 999 super chat. Uh, did Nash get backlash leaving that Luca got? Well, let’s not forget I mean they are it is I would say in some levels first of all the noise level that was possible in 2004 cannot compare to 2025. Steve Nash was not traded. He did leave of his own valition. So there definitely I’m sure there were some disappointed people, but as I remember it, the Mavs got much more of the criticism for making an offer that was 2 years and $30 million less to Nash than Phoenix offered. So I’m sure there were I mean, didn’t you say that young Bobby Carella was pretty I was devastated. Yeah. But like were you I mean I wasn’t mad at Steve. Well, I was like, Steve, why? But I was mostly mad at the Mavs. Yeah. Yeah. I mean and my my house was uniquely uh biased in this regard uh you know in terms of information but our house was not happy with the Mavs either. Yeah. I think in term Okay, maybe I mis maybe I misunderstood the question. If it was backlash for the Mavs, I think the Mavs got a pretty significant amount of backlash for letting Steve Nash go in free agency, but the backlash for trading Luca was certainly louder. For sure. Uh, speaking of guards, let’s talk about the guards that are on this team, particularly D’Angelo Russell as he gets ready for his first season with the Dallas Mavericks. Our own Markstein, who is live in studio with us, obviously doing some reporting when it came to the Mavericks in their choosing of D’Angelo Russell over Chris Paul, who of course signed a deal to go back to the Los Angeles Clippers to continue his career on the West Coast. So Mark, let’s get into it because the Mavericks obviously had a familiarity with D’Angelo Russell who formerly used to play with the Los Angeles Lakers, namely Anthony Davis on that squad, is now reunited with not only Anthony Davis, also Phil Handy and others on this particular team. Why did the Mavericks prefer D’Angelo Russell over Chris Paul? Well, the initial word was that the Mavs were among the teams that were going to have free agent interest in Chris Paul. And it quickly became clear that Chris Paul was only going to be interested in staying close to home. So Chris Paul is from North Carolina. The Hornets wanted him. The Bucks have wanted him. And the Mavs have interest. Even before free agency, I think on free agency eve, Jake Fischer and I did a story together that basically outlined that Chris wanted to either go back to Phoenix or go back to the Clippers. He wanted a reunion with one of those two teams, excuse me, so he could stay close to home. His family lives in Los Angeles. And he’s been now what? Houston, OKC, San Antonio, Golden State, San Antonio, and Phoenix. I did that out of order. Houston, OKC, Phoenix, Golden State, San Antonio. He’s played for five teams since leaving the Clippers. He was also initially traded to Washington. didn’t play for them. For the bulk of that time, Chris Paul was away from his family. And he clearly made it a priority. I got to be back with the family. And the options were to resign with the Clippers or perhaps a reunion with the Suns. The Clippers was the one that materialized firmly. That’s what Chris Paul chose. Amid all of that, it was relayed to me, I know you’ve it was relayed to me that yes, the Mavericks had interest in Chris Paul, but the way it’s been explained to me is the Mavs believed that D’Angelo Russell was actually the better fit for two reasons. The way the Mavs see it, they think D’Angelo Russell can have can be a strong contributor both when Kyrie Irving is out still rehabbing from his knee surgery, but also when Kyrie Irving comes back, they think that D’Angelo Russell is going to still be a key contributor to what they’re trying to do. That was one element of it. And the other other element of it that it was that was relayed to me was they think he will be a better fit alongside Anthony Davis. They just played together with the Lakers. They’re obviously friends. When AD did his TV show, what what was it? What did he I already forgot the name of it. It came intentional foul, I think. Or foul play. Foul play. Foul play. No, I don’t know. Is that right, Tanner? Can you look that up? Yeah, it’s foul play. It’s also It’s not to be confused with the Pokemon move foul play, but that was foul play. Yes, you guys are sure cuz I’m not sure. He just called him foul play. Um, so DA Anthony D’Angelo Russell and I’ve been writing too much about DeAnthony Melton. D’Angelo Russell was he appeared in that first episode of AD’s show. So, you know, there’s obviously a good relationship there. So, basically, that was the long- winded way of saying the Mavericks obviously did were were not in the mix for Chris Paul, but they feel very good about being able to get D’Angelo Russell for the taxpayer mid-level of 5.7 million. I mean, if Chris Paul wanted to go home and wanted to reunite with the Clippers or the Suns, then it also kind of stands to reason that he’s wasn’t obtainable. He wasn’t really on the list. So D’Angelo Russell can be at the top of the list of players that they can obtain as a point guard in free agency because you know no matter what they feel about Chris Paul, if he’s not on the list, he’s not on the list. Well, so let’s put it like this. I’m going to put it to you guys. Let’s say you can get both of them. Which player do you choose? Chris Paul. I like Chris Paul with the starters more, but I do agree that DLO is better for when Kyrie comes back. I’m just Well, they know more about Kyrie’s health than me, so I’m not going to pretend like I know something they don’t. But, um, you know, if if you’re skeptical that Kyrie’s going to play many games, then I would prefer Chris Paul because you are going to need a starter more than you’ll need a backup. But I do think at this stage of his career, once Kyrie comes back, if you’re playing high leverage games, playoff games where Kyrie is able and willing to play 35 minutes or more, you know, you want a little pop off the bench as opposed to Chris Paul coming in playing with backups, setting up players that aren’t necessarily very good for shots or whatever. I want someone that can come in off the bench with a little bit of offensive juice themselves. Um, but I do prefer kind of the setup guy, string pulling guy, uh, with the starters while Kyrie’s out. I think that would make the team, the offense look a little bit more fluid, but I also get the idea that like who’s making shots on this team? Who who are the shot creators if, you know, like like yes, Chris Paul is going to be better at at getting the ball like like just running an offense, just making sure that players are getting touches in the right spaces. But I I get I get the argument for either one. Uh it’s it’s kind of, you know, neither ne I I just I I think Chris Paul contributes to like really high level winning uh more than Russell ever has, but I think Russell is does he CP3 hasn’t been on a good team in a long time. He’s been on a lot of good teams, but these teams has still brought him teams that were awesome. Yeah. Five years ago. Yeah. Three, four years ago. I think Chris Paul’s value these days is more of a veteran leader in a locker room to help young guys be able to grow and be able to have a veteran presence um that can be stable in a locker room. And I think Chris Paul at this age in his career would do I think wonders for a guy like Cooper Flag as far as helping him learn the league as well. So, I would rather have the the player that has been in high leverage situations uh that you could feel like you can trust even when Kyrie Irving comes back. And I feel like Chris Paul would give you more of that. But at the same time, uh the Mavericks feel good about their choice of D’Angelo Russell. The familiarity that he has with Anthony Davis and others on this team gives him an opportunity to be able to contribute uh with this team right away going into next year. So, we’ll see how that continues to play out for D’Angelo and the Mavericks. Let’s take our first break here on the DLS Mavs podcast. When we come back, I got some burning questions for my guys, including this one in terms of who is the most undervalued bench player the Mavericks have right now. I got a flamethrower aimed right at your face, KG. So, get ready for this. Well, don’t aim it too high. I’m right in the middle. Yeah, don’t aim. Please don’t. I got to host the rest of the show. We’ll talk about it next on the DLS Maz podcast. Guys, it finally almost happened to me. Oh, no. That moment, the one where you realize you left your favorite sunglasses at the beach or on the roof of your car or at the gas station three states away. I didn’t know where I thought I’d left my second pair of sunglasses. Got a couple. You know, you got one for the house cuz I try to, you know, I walk around sometimes. Not wearing them in the living room or No, for taking walks where I don’t go to my car. The other one’s in my car. That makes sense. Yeah. I Yeah, I got one for when I’m walking down to the corner store, walking just walking anywhere. I walk I walk a little bit. But what if you do leave them on your car? I didn’t leave them on my car. It turns out both of pairs of my sunglasses, my shady rays were in my car. I don’t really know how it happened. It was a whole issue, but there was no fear because I knew that if I had left a pair somewhere that Shady Rays was going to back me with a brand new pair. I got some burning questions for my guys here when it comes to the Mavericks this upcoming season. Plus, we’ll get into a little maps trivia coming up in our next segment with our very own Bobby Krell. Appreciate you hanging out with us here on the show today. Our question of the day uh as is National Wing Day. What is your favorite wing? And is a boneless wing considered a wing? We’ve got varying answers. These two over here with a terrible take that flats are better than drums. Drums will always be better than flats. Period. Uh because you get more for your bang. So my taste just bad. I just disagree. I also said that lemon pepper wet is the best flavor and you’re just over here. Uh lemon pepper dry I Okay, lemon pepper dry for me is better. Um I get it. You think I’m wrong and a bad person. That’s fine, Kevin. I mean, you didn’t have to say it out loud, but I mean, if you want to go there, that’s fine. It’s I mean, you said it out loud with your tone. Jeez. The host can do that, I guess. Uh let’s get into some burning questions here on the show today. full house today with the DLS mask crew. Uh so let’s get into it here. Let’s start with Bernie. Question number one, gentlemen. Bobby, I’ll start with you since I like you more apparently right now. Uh should the Mavericks consider it on me Max Christie as the starting two guard next to D’Angelo Russell? Should the Mavericks consider that? I I think should is different than will. Will they probably not unless there’s injuries, but should they potentially? I mean, he got off to he got off to a really good start in his time in Dallas and then once Kyrie went out and, you know, litany of other injuries that a lot of the starters face, like his production fell, his efficiency really fell off a cliff unfortunately. Um, which was too bad because at the time, you know, there were so many minutes that he could have been playing, you know, but the team was still trying to win and and, you know, he was still getting some minutes but just not delivering in the way that they they had hoped. Um, but yeah, I mean, he’s one of their better point of attack defenders. I think Caleb Martin is probably their best at this point, but after that it Max might be your second best or third best depending. Uh, and he can defend uh a variety of positions that other guys on the team might not be able to because of their size or foot speed or whatever or lack of length or too much length, whatever it is. So, yeah, I think they I think they certainly could. Um, if Klay gets off to a slow start or one guy gets hurt all of a sudden, I mean, there could be an opportunity. I just What’s the scenario where you tell Klay Thompson and PJ Washington, you’re both coming off the bench, you know, this sixth year player, fifth, fifth, sixth, Max Christie. Yeah, I think this is only his fourth, right? Yeah, you’re four. He’s going to start over you guys. PJ, we may or may not have just signed you to an extension, but tough luck, buddy. You’re coming off the bench just like you were in Charlotte, even though we’ve rescued you from that situation and you got to be our locked on starter. You started every game in a final series. Uh, no, but you know, just there’s not room for you. Yeah, you know, a a fourth year guy in Max Christie and a firstear rookie, an 18-year-old is going to those two guys are going to start ahead of you. And then you look at Clay and it’s like, yeah, I mean, you have, you know, I I know you have a bunch of rings, you know, four of them, you know, should have got the fifth one, though, you know, like maybe if you maybe if you had a thumb championship ring, you can be a starter, too, but you know, it’s tough luck. I mean, you guys are coming off the bench. Um, I think that Max Christie and you know I was on I was on Zach’s show and he he talked about you know he mentioned at one point you know it’d be great for the Mavericks if Max Christie wouldn’t earn that role. But like what’s the what’s the scenario where you could look at those two veterans PJ and Clay and tell them this guy’s starting ahead of you. It’s possible that if there’s a bunch of injuries and Max Christie starts for a stretch and plays so well that he just earns it. Uh that could be what Dallas sticks with. But I just I I I certainly from the from the start from the jump that’s not going to be the case. And it would take some really really electric play for that to be the case. And and the more you minimize the roles of someone like Clay and PJ, the more I do wonder, you know, especially for PJ extension or not, whether these guys are going to be uh looking around and and realizing that there is more minutes, there is starting roles still left for them. Certainly for PJ uh for for Clay, you know, I I think I I assume he’s he’s pretty happy here, but uh I I don’t know. I don’t know. it it’s just it’s it’s there’s not a lot of minutes to go around when this team is healthy. So, I want to ask you real quick because obviously we’re talking about the the two guard spot here. Obviously, Angel Russell feel like is going to be the starting point guard until Kyrie Irving comes back. How is the team feeling about Clay going into his second season on this three-year deal that he has after his first year? didn’t necessarily go, I’m sure, as well as he would have liked it to, but at the same time, how are the Mavericks feeling about Klay Thompson going into this upcoming? There was so much, you know, a sconce at the way Klay’s season ended up. I mean, it was such a circus of a year. Klay Thompson came here, a huge reason he wanted to be here was to play with Luca Donuch. and Luca Donuch missed a good bit of time and then they abruptly traded him. So, I mean, the guy that Clay came here really to play with, I think Luca’s presence was a big part of putting the Mavs at the top of his free agent wish list and that was taken away. So, you know, I don’t I don’t it’s hard at this point to make lineup projections to me because it’s just like Tim said that they have so many guys when healthy, but they’re obviously not starting the season when healthy. And we still have questions about the injury status. I mean, Kyrie, AD, and Lively, I mean, we don’t know when these guys are going to be available. So, it’s kind of hard to make roster projections at the end of July until we have more data, I think. But, you know, to me, it’s unfair to like say, you know, like to to to raise huge issues with Klay’s first season in Dallas. To me, you guys, how do you feel? Yeah. You’re the ar you’re the you’re the arbiter. I am. Yeah. I just kind of feel like who who instilled me with that power? Well, cuz I just think like I’m I like you’re I I don’t think he’s going to start. I mean, I I I think that they s Well, clearly they didn’t because they traded him, right? I thought that they signed Clay to play alongside Luca and Kyrie. This dynamic backcourt, if you get one dude to attract attention, those guys are going to give you 60 points a game. and make it look easy and they’re going to make the regular season easier. Um, this is kind of bleeding into the next question which we do have to get to these other two, but then I I don’t think that Klay fits with the starting group. So, the question would be which Mavericks bench player will impact winning most this upcoming season that Klay Thompson. Klay Thompson. Okay. Because you feel like Clay’s gonna come off the bench this year. Yeah. One of my hot takes yesterday is that Klay will have the biggest offensive onoff split. What if Lively’s a backup? That’s okay. I made that joke. You did when you asked before though, right? If he’s healthy. Who knows? I don’t know. You’re supposed to know. It’s July 29th. You’re the arbiter. I mean, given the fact that Lively is recovering from a surgery, I would think that gives Gaffford the edge to be the starting center as we judge it on July 29th, two months away from media day. Well, we got three months to fill between now. No, but I’m just I mean like I and look, we I can’t I mean I all I’m saying is I can’t tell you with with you know I can’t definitively say who the starting center is or who the starting two guard two guard is. I’m pretty sure that D’Angelo Russell is going to start at the one. I mean he’s going to get the first crack at that. I’m still penciling in Clay there as a start. Flag’s going to start as a rookie. I feel pretty confident saying that. Yeah, which means there’s a squeeze because if AD’s going to play year four, Liveler Gap is going to play year five. But again, like right there, we hit our first our first significant hurdle. Is Anthony Davis going to be ready to start in training camp? Is he going to be ready to play on opening night? I I don’t have definitive word on on those things. So, I mean, it remains to be seen. We’ll find out. I’m gonna go with Naji Marshall as my the Maverick Impact winning most off the bench. Brandon Williams. Next question. Can I start Can I start calling Naji the artist formerly known as the knife? Uh, apparently so because he’s Is that a good nickname? He’s looking for a new nickname. It’s not very until he until he does an interview and says he doesn’t like it. Naji, buddy, we got three months, man. Let’s go. All right. So, I got to get him on the show. That I I need to That has to happen somehow. If he I mean, he he’s in town. He played in the prom was it last night on Sunday? Yeah. Got to figure that out. So, let’s finish up here with our Mavericks burning question before we take our next break. Which current Maverick is the most undervalued player on the team right now? It weirdly is Caleb Martin because we forget that he’s on the roster half the time and he is objectively the best point of attack defender they have on their roster. He is the best perimeter defender. Uh he his offense was so bad last season that it didn’t matter that he was the best point of attack to vendor. He literally could not play. They they they could not put him out there because that’s how bad like for every benefit he gave them defensively on that side of the court. He gave it right back because he could not shoot, he could not score, he could not make a shot anywhere on the court. And uh even worse than that, like he was he had no confidence taking any sorts of shot. He would try to drive every open three-pointer, you know, or every open like shooting opportunity. If you can get back like he was he was a pivotal like one of the most important two-way players, the most important two-way player, I guess, alongside Jimmy Butler of a team that went on a finals run. Uh he doesn’t even need to get back to that level of offense, uh where he was like hitting like 45% of his threes. He’s a competent offensive player. I think you got to find minutes for him somewhere on the team. Uh it’s just yeah they that’s that’s the one guy that I’m I’m going to say at this point as much as I have pushed back and said ad nauseium that was a very bad trade that guy could still make an impact next season uh especially because part of the reason his offense was so bad uh from everything I’ve heard was because of a shoulder injury that really affected his shot. Derek Lively is my answer because that dude is one of the I don’t know top ex bigs in the league. I did like uh Cavon Alexander or Kevin I don’t know how to pronounce my bad but uh saying Anthony Davis is probably the most undervalued. That’s honestly not a bad shout because he is one of the 10 or 15 best players alive. You know I thought you said undervalued bench players. No, I’m just saying undervalued player period. Undervalued player. Yeah, I stick by my answer. Like in fans eyes, I think, and you know, we try not to do this, but like in fans eyes, it’s like, well, AD is just not Luca. Well, yeah, but he’s still Anthony freaking I don’t think anybody underrates. I don’t think anybody should be undervaluing. You just said it. He’s a top 10 15 player when he’s healthy and arguably fans think he’s overpaid and he’s not very good or whatever. I mean, at one point last year during the first half of the year, Anthony Davis was a leading MVP candidate. Yeah. After opening night, he was. Yeah, he was. Yeah, the chat wars are still going on. They’re raging. I’m just saying the idea of undervaluing a dude who is as good as Anthony Davis, I I I don’t I don’t see it because I think I I see it online every day. I’m not saying that that’s how I feel. I’m saying I think that’s that’s the the pulse I get from the from the forums. Yeah, I think he’s the most I think he’s the most indispensable player on this team right now. Kyrie, maybe it’s most important. This team is not winning anything close to what they believe they can unless Anthony Davis is playing 80 to 85% of the games for them this season. Tell that to the message boards. Are you are you confident when healthy Anthony Davis is going to be a top 10 player in the NBA next season? Sure, why not? I don’t know. What does top 10 mean? What does it mean? Uh it means I I don’t know. I mean I think he’s extremely good. Do you think he do you think he has uh at worst the like ninth best impact on winning? I don’t know. I don’t that’s I don’t know. How do you measure that? I don’t know. There is no great way to measure it. He’s just really damn good, dude. But I don’t I don’t think anybody is saying he’s bad. I mean, if you want to say that he’s I just I don’t think that I don’t think I think there are a lot of Mavs fans that are still very upset about the trade that just don’t necessarily or won’t accept that he’s really good. That’s what I’m saying. That’s interesting because we saw when he played in his first game with the Mavericks. I’m literally just telling you what what people on Reddit in our chat say every day. Again, this is not my opinion. Uh DXY has the best answer when it comes to uh who’s the most undervalued. Dwight Pal. It’s true. I mean, I almost said him. Of course, he’s under. Let’s take our Mavs alltime offensive rating leader. Dwight Pal makes buckets. That’s real. That’s true. It tied with Tyson Chandler, but yes. Oh well. Let’s take our next break here on the DLS mass podcast. When we come back, uh, let’s play some mass trivia with our guy Bobby Krell. He’s going to try to stump us here on the show. Our guy Bobby Carella, take us through some mass trivia here on the show. Yeah. So I got five questions. I’m seeing if I could stump y’all. We’re calling it trivia Tuesday. Maybe we’ll do this. Trivia. Why is your computer faced at Mark Stein? So So I have it pulled up on my phone. I don’t want anyone peeking. Mark Stein. I’m looking at my own three. He’s got too much integrity to cheat. But, uh, shout out to Basketball Reference and Statad. I was looking up a bunch of stuff from there and that’s how I put all these questions together. So, I’m going to try and stump y’all. Feel free to play in the chat as well. If you’re watching this on YouTube after the fact, feel free to play in the comments section. Uh, just don’t cheat. I will know if you cheat. All right. I’m always watching. Okay. He’s not. Uh, all right. Number one, NBA schedule’s coming out sometime pretty soon here. The Mavs have played 45 season openers before. Okay. Who have they played the most season openers against? The San Markstein, do you have a guess? Sorry, I lost my train of thought. I did not hear it. Who have the Mavs played the most season openers against? KG and Tim both say the Spurs. You got to lock in. It’s trivia Tuesday. It might be the Spurs. All right, I’m going to I think it is Spurs, too. It is the Spurs. Ding, ding, ding. They played seven season openers against the Spurs, including their first game ever. They played the last two as well. Now, Phoenix is number two on that list with six. They’ve played the Suns three times in the last like six years on opening night. I think it should be Mav Spurs opening night every single year. That should just be like a standard thing. Yeah, it’s just that that one, especially with the last two seasons opening up against the Spurs, like that’s going to boost what was already I mean, it’s their main rival. Oh, yeah. Cooper, Wimby, the whole thing. I would argue Mavs Lakers, but that’s just me. Um, it’s July. Okay. Okay. Now, normally there’s no uh organized basketball in July, but there has been one game in July. The Mavs have played one game in July way back in July 31st, 2020. Who is the Dallas Mavericks franchise’s all-time leading scorer in the month of July? Trey B. Christophs Porzingis. Yeah, it’s it’s one of those two. Oh, we should have done the right on right on the white boards. I Hey, I don’t I don’t remember. I remember that for next week, too. We all know the game. It’s Luca. I I can’t remember who led Trey Burke the answer is Kristoff Sporzing with 39 points in my own answer. Always trust your first points. He had 39. Trey Burke had 31. Luke had 28. Mavs lose. Okay. A barn burner in overtime. 153 to like 15. So is the reason I messed up my own answer. So when Porzingis got hurt, that was in August. Yes. And I was there. James Harden is the NBA’s all-time leading scoreer in the month of July uh from that very same game. All right, now he have he had 49. Yeah, that’s pretty. So, that’s uh that was a good warm-up round. All right, we got three more and these are going to get tougher. Okay, that was just easy. Hope you’re hope you’re ready. Anthony Davis recorded one triple double last season after joining the Mavs. Uh, a lot of guys have recorded one triple double. The all-time leader in triple doubles for the Mavs is Luca, followed by Jason Kidd and Michael Fenley. Four Mavericks in franchise history have recorded two triple doubles with the Mavs. Dirk Nitzky has two. Name those players. Sean Bradley. Dirk Nitzky. Dirk is one of them. Sean Bradley is not. I was just I was just I covered Sean’s one trip with blocks. I thought he would have had two. I remember that day. It was against the Blazers. Sean Marian. No. So Durk had two. Durk had two. Durk defin. Yes. Uh, Finley. Michael Finley had six. I already mentioned him. Oh, my bad. Josh Howard. Triple doubles. That’s That’s pretty good. Uh, I don’t think it’s correct, but Derek Harper. Derek Harper. No, Josh Howard’s not one of them. Josh Howard. No. Tarpley. Oh, wow. Roy Tarpley. No, he didn’t have two. No. I’ll I’ll go one I’ll give you a hint. One before Durk’s career, one um at the very end of Durk’s career, and one during Durk’s prime. Oh, very end of Durk’s career. I this Did Antoine Walker have two? Uh Dennis Smith Jr. Antoine Walker had two. Dennis Smith Jr. had two. That That’s That was dumb of me to We’re missing one. We’re missing Dennis Smith Jr. of course had a triple double in his final game as a Maverick. Yeah. Yeah. That was so dumb as long as I did. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Give us Give us the era. Uh pre- Derk. Pre- Dirk. And he was This guy was out of Dallas by the 90s. played zero games for the Mavs in Del Shrimp had one. That’s a great guess, but no, it is Mark Aguire. Mark Aguire, Dirk Nitzky, Dennis Jr., Antoine Walker. I hate this game. I’m missing left and right. You love you got basketball reference pulled up in another tab. You literally You’re literally like trying my laptop. I have Skyline Substack pulled up. I see the Well, you’re not cheating. I’m just saying you got Bball ref pulled up. Uh, okay. Popeye Jones, that’s a new Mavs assistant coach. He holds the Mavs record for offensive rebounds per game at 3.6. Okay. Name the rest of the top five in franchise history in leaders in offensive rebounds per game. Tyson Chandler. Tyson Chandler is one of them. James Donaldson got to be in there somewhere. Bob. James Donaldson is not. Bob is not Bob lead in percentage in offensive rebounding percentage. UNCC. That’s a totally different category. But he did it. He did it. He he secured the most offensive rebounds by Still not on the list though. They didn’t play enough minutes. Aguire on there. Mark Aguire is not on the list. One guy from that era though. Okay. So, how many are we naming again? I already say you need three more. Okay. You already got Donson. He’s not on there. Probably Dampier. Dampier is number five on the list. Okay. So, we got four. Who’s on there? So, who is on the list? Number one is Popeye. Number four is Tyson. Number five is Eric Dampier. We’re still missing number two. And number three, I’ll toss Brendon Haywood. I was Yeah, it’s a good guess, but no. I was going to pass that one out as well. It’s definitely not Chris Singus. I’ll say both are pre- derk. Brandon Wright. Oh, pre- derk, which makes sense. Offensive rebounding has declined as a one is distantly pre-irk. Um Oh, David uh Dave has got one. Dennis Rodman. No, Dennis Robin. I’m not playing. Let’s see. One was a teammate of Papey Jones’s. That’s another That’s another Pavl Pudolski. for Durk and that was Pablo Pod Kig and No. Yeah, that was during Durk. Uh, one large scoop of love has it. It’s Roy Tarpley. Okay, number two all time on the list. Now, the number three all time, Mark Stein, you’re the only person probably that is aware that this guy ever played for the Mavs. So, it’s it’s all or nothing. All or nothing right now. Mark 199495. Oh, yeah. I know this is all new. 9495. Well, he played a couple seasons, but 9495 is the big one. Why am I That’s That’s my first year covering the league. He was a starter. Is going to piss me off. 9495 Mav. When you tell me this, I am going to walk out of here. All right, I’m spoiling it. That’s That’s another one. There you go. The answer is Lorenzo Williams. Oh my good. I would not have gotten that. No chance. In 199495, Popeye Jones and Lorenzo Williams combined to average 7.6 offensive rebounds per game. Uh that year’s Mavs team rebounded almost 39% of their own misses. And that’s in the9s basketball tough. So don’t ever tell me guys don’t box out anymore. Uh cuz they were rebounding two out of every five misses. Uh what do you know about Lorenzo Williams? I don’t know very much. Oh wow. That was I was covering the Clippers my first full season on the beat. I mean, now that you say it, I remember the the Popeye Jones, Lorenzo Williams storyline, but they were Jay Kidd was Jay Kidd was a rookie, I believe. Yep. That was your starting front court while the three Jays were uh finding their finding their dancing shoes. Danny Forson would have been a good one. He’s not. I’ve got one more. All right. And this is ultimate guys naming dudes. All right. All right. D’Angelo Russell will wear number five for the Mavs. I’m so bad at numbers. 12 players in Mav’s history have worn number five in Dallas. Name those players. Wait, you said how many? Josh Howard. I don’t know numbers. JJ Berea Tanner says from off mic. I I don’t know. Jersey. There’s 12 guys that wore the number five. There’s 12 guys and DL’s not one of them. Oh man. Number five. Number five. Monte never wore five, did he? JJ Berea and Josh Howard. Oh yeah, Vince Carter. That’s a terrible game. I don’t know. I don’t know jersey numbers. It’s Doxy in the chat with Grimes. Quinton Grimes wore number five. That’s one we should have got. Not me. I don’t know them. A lot of these guys played during your era, Tim. I don’t care. We need eight more. Jared Utah. No. Um Sean Williams. Who wore five when I got here? Did No. Prag Denilovich wore three, not five. Uh Sasha Denilovich wore number five. What a pull for Mark. Five. Bernard James wore number five. That is a pull. That is a ballnower. That is a pull. We’re up to how many? That’s six out of 12 that we’ve got. Uh, these are starting to get a little more esoteric, but there is one very well. No, that is that is a good guess, but no, there’s one very well-known Mav or very well-known player, I should say, Walt that wore number five. And then there’s also one important contributor to the franchise’s history that wore number five. He was more important not as a player. That’s my hint. More important not as a player. Who wore five in the 80s? I’m just blanking. More important not as a player. Not as a player. The 12 guys to wear number five. We’ve got number six of them. No, I don’t know. Sasha Pavlovich. No. Yeah. No. Some of them you’re never going to guess. There are there are two names on this list that you should get. Um, one was an important contributor to the team, but not as a player. The other one is very well known as a player and as a college player that was on the Mavs briefly and went to the playoffs with the team Trey B and then was later traded for something else. What didn’t? Coach Avery Johnson. Oh, that’s bad. D Wheeler in the chat. That is bad. Mostly known as number six for the Spurs, but was a number five for the Mavs. Remember that. That hurts. That hurts. Seven. All right, we’re running out of time. Should I spoil it? Yes. All right. Tyler Dorsy. No chance. Tom Garrick. Oh, AJ Lawson. No. Damn. Tom Garrick. Jon Howard. How can I forget that? Come on. Kelvin Upshaw. Oh, I loved his game. And injury is kind of rude. Former Mav Moses Wright. Oh, yeah. Former two-way Mav Moses Wright. All that info. Joan basketball. We’re doing this every Tuesday. It’s going to be Tuesday. That’s a It’s a main I’m angry now. I’m legit angry. Staple of the white boards next week. Yeah. Yeah. Know. Yeah. We We got to do a whiteboard. Yeah. That That was fun though. That was fun. So anyway, ex expand your mind, man. Broaden your mind. Let’s take our final break here on the show today. When we come back, let’s dial up the Stein line. Yes, boys and girls. Luca’s on a revenge tour. Stein’s gonna tell us all about it. What? I’ll answer in your super chats as well. coming up next. Again, appreciate all of you hanging out with us here. Make sure you like, comment, and subscribe to DLLS Sports. Let’s get the super chats are on the screen because it’s been bothering me since the first segment. I thought I misread the first one, but actually I didn’t. I think our super chat friend wanted to say, “Did the Mavs?” He corrected that. Yeah. Because that that’s what kind of threw me off was more about was the Mavs backlash for letting Nash go. And like I said, it before Luca, it was it was the I think it was the backlash leader until the Luca trade. I think that’s I think that’s fair. PVS with the $2 super chat. Uh KO’s explaining the NBA version of office politics. Yeah, that this is in regard to talking about why Max probably wouldn’t start. It would take, you know, kind of an act of God thing. Um I mean, same for Tim Hardway Jr. Like when Tim Hardway was making 17, 18, 19 million, you got to give that guy minutes, you know. Um now that he’s on the minimum with Denver, if you’re not playing well, you’re not getting minutes. That apply to Daniel Gaffford then since he’s making$ 18 million per season. Not right now. Okay. But it has in the past. Daniel Gaffford started last season for a reason. You know, it was not because he was the better player as shown by the numbers and the stats that those two put up when they were both healthy together. Uh but he still started to to begin the year. I think that PJ could understand if Klay started ahead of him and Klay could understand if PJ started ahead of him. If that’s what the scenario is, I think there’s cases to be made for both of those guys that they can be like, “All right, you know, PJ looks at Clay and says, “I get it.” Also, not not just his accolades, not just his rings and his his playoff experience, but okay, Klay does something I very much do not do. And then Clay can look at PJ and be like, “Okay, he’s been the starter, you know, ever since he was traded here and went to the finals doing that. You know, I I understand that I can I can seed my spot. you know, maybe maybe Klay would really look at as seeding his spot to Cooper Flag. Uh, which would be a little bit more accurate if if that’s what the starting lineup ends up being. And I think Klay could have an understanding. I just I don’t know if either player could look at Max Christie starting ahead of them and think that’s the way, you know, like and and feel great about that. Joseph Vander with the $5 super chat. Would you trade Derrick Lively and PJ Washington for Derek White? I bet Boston might Boston might do that. I probably wouldn’t, but I think Boston would do that. That’s a win now kind of move. Are the Mavs ready to win now? I mean, I wouldn’t depend on who you ask, right? Yeah, I wouldn’t I wouldn’t do it for that reason. just just the idea that when you can’t say when Anthony Davis or Kyrie Irving are going to play in a game, I don’t think you can say you’re Yeah. I mean, I wouldn’t I wouldn’t double down to win now uh at the expense. But but if you try at least if you trade it for for Derrick White, like it’s a guy who’s going to have value in a couple years. I’m not I’m just move on. I don’t I’m not ready to give up on Lively. He’s had a terrible time with injuries and frankly he’s as high on the list of Mavericks who miss Luca as anyone you could put on that list. But he’s also still a very young player who I would like to see more of before sending him out the door. He’s gonna rank very highly on the list of guys missing Kyrie to I don’t I don’t think he misses Luca as much as he misses having healthy legs. I mean, he’s great when he’s on the court. Doesn’t matter who’s around him. Uh, and that’s right, Charlie Saturday. Uh, we’re already deep into hypothetical playing time in late July. Filling content. Well, it’s almost August, right? It’ll be August on Friday. I should also note that Charlie Saturday, famed Bucks fan, that’s right. Is in a is in a Mavs chat room in late July. So, what does that So, what does that tell you? Charlie Saturday, he’s getting ready for Euro Basket. Um he’s probably dismayed that we have not done a full breakdown of the flurry of Euro basket commitments in the last week. There have been many. Uh today Larry Markin confirmed participant for Finland. Oo GM Ben with the $1.99 super chat. Man, why does Stein want to trade lively? Yeah. What the hell, dude? This show had such a good to GM bed. That’s not AI. That’s a real thing. That’s a real thing. AI could not make that. That’s right. Uh, speaking of Euro basket and commitments, you just mentioned Lauri Markin committing for Finland. We’ve seen Giannis already commit uh for Greece. Nicole Yokic is going to be suiting back up. France is not going to have WBY or Gobear, but all of them are playing, but almost everybody else’s stars are playing in this thing. I mean, France Vagner for Germany, marketing for Finland. Well, I guess Wim is coming. Serbia is loaded. Serbia is loaded with they’re winning. Uh, poor Mr. Donic. His two the two most highly touted or maybe the two most established players on Slovenia’s roster not named Luca Donuch would be Josh Nebo, the naturalized American, and Vlat Kochar, who of course used to play for Denver. Both are expected to miss Euro basket. just recently announced his retirement. So, who blanco contra? Didn’t he just recently announce? No, no, no, no, no. He’s no he’s he’s actually left the Nuggets. He’s going to play he’s playing in Italy next season, but he’s he’s he he had a rough time with injury last season. So, they’re not going to have Chonchar. They’re not going to have Nebo. So, Luca Donuch is going to Zoron Dragic going to be there. That is a good question. I do not know if Zoron is on. Can Goran dust off a little Goron? Goran Dragage is retired, so he’s not coming back either. So, um, but there are there are there are a lot of really good and that’s why Eurob basket’s always so good because it’s just, you know, it’s pretty much every team has NBA players and it’s Yeah, it’s a nice It’s a nice It’s a It’s a nice late August treat when like all of a sudden August 27th. Hey, and now we got two games a day, maybe even four games a day in the early round. We’re like, sub all these games we can watch. Yeah, I’m excited for Euro Basket. It’s going to be it’s going to be really good. Should we do a watch along? GM Ben wants to do some Euro Basket watch along. Relax. I’m busy. I don’t believe it. Uh we got about five six minutes left. Let’s talk about one of those players who’s going to be uh in Euro Basket playing for team Slovenia, of course, who’s on his own tour of sorts. Uh whether it be on Yankee broadcast or meeting Aaron Judge or um doing his thing is number 77 for Los Angeles. Mark, did you guys talk about that yesterday at all? Quite a bit. No. Uh, no, not at all. Yeah, we Oh, I didn’t know if that was a bit or not. I Sorry. Uh, Zoron Dragic averaged eight points and two assists for Bill Bao basketball last season. So, I think reasonable expectation is that he is still playing and will be on the Slovenian national team. Topic is playing for Serbia, too. Serbia. Serbia is loaded, man. Damn. Yeah. Yeah, they are the favorite. Bogdan Bogdanovich. Bogdan Bogdanovich from the clips. I mean, people forget like Serbia took they took to the brink in uh the Olympics this past, you know, year uh if it wasn’t for, you know, historic games in the last, you know, couple games by, you know, Steph and LeBron and all these other players. Um team USA would not have won goal, but yeah, Serbia took them to the brink uh before they ultimately won that game. Uh anything you want to add from what’s going on? I mean, do you guys even want I mean, I don’t know. I got kind of got divided that you guys were done talking about it. Do you still want to talk about it? Do you want to talk about something else? I don’t want to force it. I mean, you can talk about it if you want. I have nothing. Well, you have four minutes. I have nothing to say. Do you have any Do you have any thoughts that you didn’t get to? I think anyone that doesn’t want us to talk about Luca is going to have a real long next 10 years because like the Lakers play in the same sports league as the Mavs. So, that’s all that I have to say. An NBA Cup as well. I thought Tanner had real breaking news. I was like, what? Um, no. The NBA just announced the Lakers are still in the NBA, right? He’s he’s on this Jordan Brand promotional tour. So, he he’s going to be in the news all week. He’s in New York right now. The Men’s Health cover obviously came out yesterday. He’s going to be in Chicago next. There’s an LA stop at the end. So, there’s going to be Luca news all week. I mean, he this is this is a a curveball from him. He does, you know, usually he goes to Europe and he’s in Europe for the rest for the whole off season, but you know, he came he came back for this tour as I understand it. I think this would have happened no matter what. This is all culminating, I’m assuming, as we move close. you’re talking about Euro Basket as he gets ready for his um obligations with Slovenia that by the time he gets to the end of this tour he’ll be getting ready to head back to get ready to play. Yeah. I mean basically basketball starts August 27 they’ve got exhibition or not exhibition they have they have a home and home with Germany on August 8th and August you’ve been silenced oh man big NBA the Mavs the angry Mavs we don’t want to hear it anymore we’re done with Luca unplug that Guys, Mike, are you Backstein? Hello. Hello. Chat room, please tell me if my mic is working. That’ll be like a 10, guys. I can hear Markstein. All right. Ah, by the way, Jeff N says, “A boneless wing is just a chicken nugget.” All right. Yeah. And a chicken nugget, a chicken nugget is a is a wing. Oh, you believe that uh a boneless wing is a wing? I’m back, Tanner says. Oh, no, no, no. We can’t let you get out of here without What’s your your your final verdict when it comes to wings? Uh Markstein, why are you why are you full court pressing me on this? Because it’s the question of the day. It’s literally the question. Buffalo is not tuned in. Yeah. Like BFL, you get aggravated for your wing tank? No, I just I don’t know. I I do I do tend to believe that boneless wings should count. Wow. Okay. All right. Cool. Why Why is that? I just think it’s a different kind of whole thing. It’s like a different Somebody said it was an elite chicken nugget earlier. That’s what they call it. Yeah, it’s different flavors. It’s all chicken. Why is it different? Isn’t Aren’t boneless wings all white meat? And aren’t chicken aren’t like chicken wings like bone in wings? Isn’t that dark meat? No. It can be both white and dark meat. Yeah, that that that was a kind of crazy thing for you to say. Even I know that’s not remotely true. Like what? That’s right, Sam. That’s right. Are you sure? Yeah, I’m sure. Um, Jacob says, “Uh, Bon is the only way to go.” Bobby wants to be wrong so bad he’s googling it. Oh, I do have a TR I do have a trivia followup. Oh, Tanner is just a tight savage today. That’s what I’m talking about. Checking me and put me in my play. Forget it. Forget it. I don’t want to go. I don’t want to go over. Where’s the drop? And you know what? Thursday is National Chili Dog Day. Are we going to have like segments on that? Channel 59 alert. That’s right. That means Markstein, it’s time to go here on the DLS math podcast. Sakes. Well, we appreciate our guy Tater making us look good and sound good as always. This is what you get in July content, boys and girls. So, get ready for more of it. It’s fun. That’s the whole point. That’s great. It’s always fun. We can get mad about basketball in three months. Plenty of time for that. Uh, that’s our national NBA insider Markstein. That’s our Mavericks analyst Bobby Krill. That is our Mavericks beat writer Tim Ko. I’m your host, Kevin Gray. We are No, we won’t. I won’t be here. So, actually, it’s not my problem. We are M. We’ll talk to you tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. right here on DL Sports. Y’all be good. Peace. [Music] [Applause] [Music]

Thought itll be another luka show. Thank god.
My favorite Lorenzo Williams fact was that he (our starting center) weighed less (200 lb) than our starting point guard (Jason Kidd at 210). Shaq in Orlando was not a great matchup for those Mavs. 😀 Actually, nobody was a good matchup for most early to mid 90s Mavs teams.
Come on you said it yourselves. Cp3 wasn't an option. The mavs said "uhh that's OK we'd rather have dlo anyway" when they realized and came up with a quick explanation why.
You can't trade Luka bc "defense wins championships" and then claim you preferred dlo to Cp3. Cp3 may not be a great defender at this stage of his career, but he has in fact played defense and contributed to winning before. Dlo has done neither (unless you count him keeping kd's salary spot warm on the warriors until they could trade for Wiggins to be contributing to winning – which would be a credible argument)
Dlo is not the one for this mission smh
