Spurs May Not Pay De’Aaron Fox According To Marc Stein

What’s going on everyone? So today was De’aran Fox extension day and there’s been a lot of reports, a lot of conversations, a lot of questions surrounding De’aran Fox in the San Antonio Spurs. What are they going to do? Are they going to give him that contract? Are they going to give him the max extension? Or is it going to be, you know, max extension but the fewer years, right? A three-year maybe max, something along those lines. Well, we got to today and nothing, right? They have not signed the extension. And to put things in perspective, a guy like Luca literally the moment, right? He was expected to sign today. He actually signed yesterday when it officially became official, right? Because usually teams, if you’re the guy and we’re just going to give you the max, there’s no games. It’s you sign them, right? But again, you continue to hear reports, you continue to hear all this noise of like, hey, the San Antonio Spurs since getting Dylan Harper changed everything. And I’ve talked about this for months and I’ve gotten push back and push back and push back, but it’s the reality, right? Whether whether we want to face it or not, it’s the reality. Now, that doesn’t mean that that Dear and Fox won’t sign the Max and that the San Antonio Spurs won’t give it to him, but usually if both sides know, hey, we’re just going to give you the Max, usually it’s a done deal immediately, right? very rarely does it get drawn out unless sides are negotiating or someone is kind of reserved, right? Like that’s the problem. And now you have Mark Stein who recently came out and gave a report um basically diving into his extension today and said that uh him getting an extension, a max contract extension is not seen as automatic. So, there is a lot of talks again still that it’s not guaranteed that the San Antonio Spurs are going to pay Darren Fox what he wants, which is why I’ve talked about potentially trading Darren Fox. Why I’ve talked about Darren Fox might be the one to initiate the trade cuz he might like he might feel slighted and looked at it as like, “Hey, I chose you. I came here. I came to you and you guys decided now because you got this shiny new toy that you don’t want to pay me what I’m worth.” And the serious question is he is he even worth the max? Is it even worth you paying the max salary in order to bring in De’Aran Fox, right? I don’t think he’s a 50 million a year guy or 42, right? Whatever it would be that he’d get, right? Like I just I don’t think that he’s worth that amount, right? He’s going to make the same amount of money as Luca Donic. Now, to be fair, Luca would have gotten the super backs, but he was traded still, right? Like Darren Fox, like where does he range? I think he’s closer to like a $30 million guy because what has he accomplished? What has he achieved? Right? Like and and this is the problem. This is the dilemma that the Spurs have. If they didn’t get Dylan Harper automatic, right? No questions asked. They pay him. They give him the money. There’ still be the conversation of would he be would he have been worth it? But they would have given him the money because that’s the guy that they wanted that was going to lead the franchise as the starting point guard. They didn’t know. And this is what I keep trying to reiterate. They did not know that they were going to get Dylan Harper. They did not know that Stefan Castle was going to look as good as he is, right? They did not see the future. Otherwise, they might have not have done that trade. If they knew we’re going to get uh Dylan Harper, right? They probably never do the De’arren Fox trade, but because they ended up doing it and now they got Dylan Har, now they’re at this impass, right? So the idea that he’s just auto like he’s going to get this you know this max contract and everything’s going to be great. Don’t be shocked the the whole hey he you know he could end up getting traded. People keep saying like absolutely not. Don’t be shocked. Again I don’t know. I’m not in the front office. I’m not you know on the phones but I’ve taken a lot of heat for talking about this and we’re here and there’s no contract. again. Maybe they will. But my whole thing, the whole reason that I keep talking about this and I brought it up and I talked about this literally months ago, the I talked about this when we drafted Dylan Harper, right? And I talked about like, does this change things? And and clearly the Spurs feel feel that way because if they didn’t, they would have paid him, right? The Lakers knew, hey, Luca extension, boom, let’s go. Luca goes, extension. Boom. No questions, no nothing. Do a whole press conference, end up going to a Backstreet Boys concert, all of that, right? Living their best life. The Spurs were supposed to do that with De’Aran Fox and then they landed Dylan Harper and it changes everything for this team. Again, I keep talking about it. The Spurs are going to get expensive and they’re going to get expensive fast and it starts with De’arra and Fox right now. It’s very po there’s several ways that this could go. they could, you know, hold off, kind of see, engage, and, you know, maybe at the trade deadline they trade him. They could trade him this off season, right? Darren Fox, like I mentioned, could request a trade and go, you know what? Hey, get me out of here, right? Like there’s a lot of different scenarios in which this could go. There’s also the path that they just give him the max, right? So it is even even in this same report it’s expected that um according to Brett Seagull right a report Sunday that the talks around the NBA is that Fox will likely sign an extension worth slightly less than the max right so there’s been a lot of talks about him you know maybe getting the full years but not at a full max um or him getting a max but on shorter years right kind of line his contracts up with a Stefon Castle and a Dylan Harper right so maybe do like a three-year deal like a three-year max rather than, you know, the the longer max where it’s like, okay, now he basically what Luca did, right? Luca got the the no threeyear max, but that’s more of just like he’ll make more money type thing. So maybe they do something like that with De’aran Fox and then his money kind of falls off. he goes wherever he’s going to go. And then the Spurs, they get to go and bring in and and pay, not bring in, but pay uh Dylan Harper and Stefan Castle, or I guess Stefon Castle and then Dylan Harper kind of go that route, that manner, right? I don’t think we’re out of the woods yet, though. again like there is clearly a reason he didn’t sign his max extension today cuz it’s usually pretty you know you want the max we want to give you the max easy boom sign it here it is here’s the paperwork right and the fact that they didn’t and look this was this again there have been several reports from several different people that have all said the same thing and you know again at times everything’s kind of you know it’s all noise till you really see things. But like what’s the general consensus? And the general consensus is the Spurs might not want to give him the money because they got Dylan Harper. Now I understand the argument of well because you have Dylan Harper, right? We don’t know what Fox can do. We don’t know what Dylan Harper can do. I get all that. But if you’re the Spurs, do you really want to commit to a guy that you’re unsure about? There’s a lot of questions about De’arian Fox coming out of Sacramento, right? He had one good season and he lost in the first round. That was the best season he had with Sacramento. He lost in the first round. There’s a lot of questions about him being a leader, being one of the top players on your team, so on and so forth, right? And then he comes to the Spurs and the Spurs give up literally nothing to get him. None of their key pieces, none of their, you know, future guys, nothing. and the Spurs were worse. Right now, in his defense, it’s harder to integrate a, you know, a number one option, a a higherend guy than it is just like your role player, right? Because a role player, it’s like, hey, you know what, you’ve done your whole career. Yeah, just do that here, right? Where a star, they’re used to getting x amount of shots and opportunity, especially if they’re not coming to be just like the guy, they’re coming in to be one of the guys. So again, Spurs and and Darren Fox are not out of the woods yet in that regard. We’ll see what ends up happening, but don’t be shocked again if he ends up getting traded or he requests a trade or something. But let me know your thoughts and opinions down in the comments. The San Antonio Spurs and De’Aaron Fox need to come to an agreement to a new contract extension. Spurs originally planned to pair Fox and Victor Wembanyama long term but then landed Dylan Harper which through a wrench into all of it.

  1. they know fox is not a top25 player and not worth that money, trust castle and harper to reach a top50 player level with cheap contracts

  2. The Spurs have been a badly managed franchise for the post-Duncan era – that's the reality. They are in the process of having to rebuild themselves to being a true contender. They will greatly screw themselves if they do not secure Fox moving forward. The issue is that this current mindset that the Spurs brass may have by not maxing him is likely born from the arrogance of "lucking" into Castle and Harper the last two years to the point they may consider Fox expendable. It will be an idiotic move. I keep seeing arguments that assume Castle, Harper, Sochan, and Bryant become these super players that reach their projected potential – yet its funny because THEY are the question marks and NOT Fox. Fox is proven as a performer – it doesn't really matter if he's a top 5 or 10 PG, what matters is what he can do for WEMBY and what wemby can do for HIM. Fox was the guy in SAC…not Sabonis. Fox had the gravity against defenses. Here it will be WEMBY with the gravity and that should increase Fox's efficiency etc and the other way around for Wemby. Wemby hasn't had ONE true pick and roll partner to elevate his easy looks. Paul could not break the first line of defense into the lane and was not a threat. Fox is an elite threat with the ball. THis is a no brainer.

Castle progressed beautifully last year….but we STILL don't know his ceiling. Harper can still literally be a bust (relative to his draft position) just as much as he can become the next harden. The likelihood of that is far less for the latter than for the former. Carter-Bryant is purely raw…he won't be anything of true note for another 3-4 years IF ever anything. And Sochan hasn't proven a single thing at this point yet we are still considering throwing money at him based on some Diaw/Rodman 2.0 fantasy? Please no. Operate in the NOW for the sake of Wemby's development. OKC, Denver, Boston are all champions who's priniciple stars GREW from previous playoff failures but developed experience from them. Wemby has NO PLAYOFF EXPERIENCE…its pivotal he build that part of his mental/physical development.

And to make it more palatable – we are paying Vasell 27 million and Keldon 17 million. Neither is worth HALF their salaries. Vassell is supposedly a 3-D scorer yet he can't score, can't really shoot like advertised, and plays terrible D. Keldon is just awful. Yet we just decided to run it back with both lol. EVERY GM IN THE LEAGUE would give up both Keldon and Vassell for a max Fox without hesitation (for those needing a PG) as they are making a whopping 45 million together to be trash and/or unavailable. Are you telling me Fox isn't worth 48 million vs what we've happily paid them??

Please spurs don't be stupid and arrogant.

  3. The Wemby-Fox PNR will make both all stars again and make everyone else on offense great. If Fox has a greedy agent, then he signs a max or near-max deal. If he wants many titles working with Wemby, et al., then he signs a Jalen Brunson type extension.

  4. Fox doesn't have an ego and from interviews and his demeanor he is not "gangsta". He looks to be a class act AND HE WANTS TO BE HERE. If he doesn't have a greedy agent, then I believe he will work with PATSFO to end his career here.

  5. We can pay him max, declare bankruptcy 2 years later when Wemby decides he wants to play in France, the team is sold to a Vegas mafia boss, and moves the team to Sin City. Fox will be the team's PG. San Antonio got "out-foxed".😆

  6. Heads up: Fox has been SERIOUSLY disrespected by Trevor Lane on the JouTube channel "The Basketball Bulletin". Dissed in a MAJOR way.

  7. Why are you still whining about "If they knew they were going to get…" BS?
The Spurs are not Christ the King…Duh!!!

  8. Get rid of Vassell and KJ. They take up minutes that Castle-Harper-Bryant-Champagnie-Minix-DJG should be getting. As for DV's bloated contract extension, it is costing MAJOR $$$ that need to go elsewhere. So trade BEFORE training camp.
