Cook did not disappoint. In 38 minutes, the rookie tallied 24 points for rebounds, seven assists, and three steals, his highest scoring game in the NBA to date. He shot an efficient eight of 16 from the field and was perfect eight of eight from the free throw line, showing off his smooth touch and unshakable poise under pressure. While he missed both of his three-point attempts and committed four turnovers, his overall impact on both ends of the floor helped set the tone for the Bulls blowout win. The Mavericks, struggling under firstear head coach Quinn Buckner, who fell to 1 to 10 with this loss, simply couldn’t match Chicago’s energy or execution. Dallas, like the Bulls, tried to run the triangle offense, but lacked the personnel and chemistry to make it work effectively. Rookie Jamal Mashburn, fresh off a 36-point game, the highest by a Maverick’s rookie since 1982, couldn’t repeat his heroics against a disciplined Chicago defense for Kukach, who entered the game averaging 14.2 points for.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists per contest. This night marked a breakout. He proved that when called upon, he could handle the spotlight and thrive in it.
