Is Fox Worth 200+ MILLION!?

Is Fox Worth 200+ MILLION!?

Spurs fans, Darren Fox became eligible for his contract extension yesterday. Could it happen? Should it happen? Let’s talk. What is up, San Antonio Spurs fans? Welcome to TSR Sports. Darren Fox is now eligible for a huge extension, but should the Spurs offer to him? We’ll talk about my two cents in just a few moments. I want to get into an article from Pounding the Rock, kind of outlining things a little bit, and then of course I’ll answer the question, is he worth it? should it happen, blah blah blah. Darren Fox became extension eligible on Sunday, August 3rd. So that would be yesterday, which means the Spurs could have already signed the star point guard to a 4-year $229 million deal. Spoiler alert, they haven’t. At the time of this video, nothing has happened as of yet. Do the Spurs have to extend Fox right now? Well, the Spurs wouldn’t lose Darren if they don’t sign him to an extension. He still has one year left on his contract, and he’s set to make $37 million next season. They have until June 30th of next year, that’s right after the NBA draft, to sign him to an extension. If they don’t, then he would enter unrestricted free agency, which means, of course, there’s downsides to that. What are those downsides? Well, look at that. There are several downsides to not signing Fox to an extension. The relationship between the front office and the player could sour quickly if the 27-year-old guard heads into the season on an expiring contract after forcing his way. All right. It’s a San Antonio from the Sacramento Kings. He could announce that he intends to enter free agency, which that would be really bad. Taking any trade talks involving him, tanking, excuse me, any trade talks involving him by saying he won’t resign with any of his suitors. So that would be the worst case scenario. Goes into the season without a contract. And then with his contract coming up, he says, “I’m not resigning with the Spurs, and if you trade me, I’m not going to resign with whoever you trade me to.” Which totally tanks his trade value. We don’t want that to happen. If the Spurs want to keep Fox or trade him in the future while having leverage, extending his contract sooner rather than later is necessary. 100% agree. So, what are the reasons why the Spurs wouldn’t want to extend Fox? Well, it’s really one. And I ain’t going to read anything from the article. It’s Dylan Harper. We’ve talked about this at length. The Spurs not expect to get the second overall pick. They drafted Dylan Harper. Now, we have the crowded back court. Somewhat crowded. Fox, Castle, and Harper. We have one known, one maybe, and one unknown when it comes to what their ceiling is in the NBA. A lot of this, you know, the whole Dylan Harper talk, it’s going to depend on how well he develops, what type of player becomes, if the Spurs even want to consider moving on from Fox. Right now, they should absolutely not to talk about trading Fox before the season starts because we have Dylan Harper. Right now, Dylan Harper is just a name with potential. when we see him achieve and exceed that potential then I’ll say okay maybe we should talk about trading Fox at some point in the future certainly not next not before next I’m sorry I’m getting confused last part I want to talk about it’s been a while since I’ve done a video enjoying the summer working out getting back in the music stuff can the Spurs and Fox agree to a shorter or cheaper extension this is the part I’m going to focus on what I give my two cents in a moment they can agree to an extension for less money or fewer years if either side has concern concerned about the other and wishes to maintain flexibility or leverage respectively. All right, this is where I wanted to chime in. Let’s talk about it. 200 million for Fox Plus from the next four years. One thing we have to remember as Spurs fans is the new CBA is going to be restricting, very restricting for small market teams that aren’t going to want to pay the first apron tax, second apron when his extension comes up. Doing a little research online, it sounds like he’s going to be eligible for a five-year $271 million extension, which you know the Spurs are going to want to extend WBY for five years. Further down the road, we have Castle’s extension and Harford’s extension. I’m going to assume they did develop into the players that we think they can and they’re going to be resigned at the end of their rookie contracts. So, to answer the questions after that little tidbit there, yes, I do think we’ll sign Darren Fox. Yes, what will happen? were going to extend his contract. Is he worth $200 million? Yes and no. If Fox signs for four years, his contract extension would overlap with Wempy, Castle, and Harper, who would all be off the rookie contracts at that point. Remember, he’s got one year left, then four years is year five. That would be the first year of Harper’s extension, and Castle and Wy were already in there. I don’t think that’s doable. I don’t think that’s sustainable with the current CVA. If that happens and Harper and Castle are the back court of the future, I think what likely happens is they trade Fox before year four. You sign him to four years, he’s here for three at minimum and then you trade him before year four where he’s still young, still has trade value, etc. We should know in three years, should we not? What we have in Harper and Castle, Castle have been in the league for four years, Harper been in three. We should pretty much be able to see what those players are doing and saying, “Yes, this is a back court of the future. Darren Fox is a great player, but this, you know, this is our young core, our cheaper core. And I mean cheaper in talent. Maybe a little in talent at that point, but who knows? But we can’t carry multiple $50 million contracts down the probably can’t. The Thunder look like they’re going to be able to do it, but we’ll see. Wait and see on that one. And if they’re not panning out the way we want them to, maybe they trade Castle or Harper. I just don’t see a scenario Spurs fans where we can have all four on, you know, past the rookie extensions and on a max contract. But with Darren Fox, what I would like to seen from the Spurs and and if Fox is willing to agree with it is three years for 150 million. It’s 50 million a year. Hey, Texas doesn’t have any state income taxes. I think he’s eligible for a little over 15 million a year. I would use that as leverage if I’m Brian Wright saying, “Hey, you’re in a state with no taxes. You came from a state that taxed the crap out of you. So you’re making actually the same thing if you’re actually probably remaking more than if you stayed in Sacramento inside the extension. 3 years 150 million which gives us some flexibility in the future if we put them on a a more nebly again while done a video. three years, 450 million, year four being an option for I’m assuming around the same thing, 50 million in case Harper or Castle don’t pan out, then you still have Darren Fox, which I’m assuming he’s going to play very well for us. I’m also assuming his hand injuries going to be 100% healed from, no longingering issues, etc. There’s there’s a lot of um a lot of question marks with his contract. I’m sure that a lot of us are are just the question marks are bouncing around in our head that we want to do what’s best for the team. You know, protect the Spurs, but also you got to make sure that you you treat your player fairly. You probably wanted to come here. So, I think I think there’s going to be a back and forth between both Fox and Spurs, but I I do like the the three years 150 and the team option. Maybe a little more than 150. Maybe it’s three years for 156, 159, whatever. Somewhere in that ballpark with year four is a team option. He’s not stupid. He knows we got Castle and Harper in the back court. Then again, maybe he wants to be a Spur for life. Maybe he looks at San Antonio and says, “I want to spend the rest of my career here.” And maybe he pulls, you know, a move that, you know, a Tim Duncan, a Tom Brady, one of those players that, you know, he thinks about and says, “All right, I see go to these max contract coming up or rookie extensions coming up. Maybe he does four years for 160.” I don’t that’s wishful thinking thinking because that’s what $50 million less than the number I talked about early in the article, but we’ve seen other players do it recently, too. Um, uh, Jaylen Brunson with the Knicks. Didn’t he take like a $40 million pay cut to go to New York? I I think that’s the number. Something for he could have made 40 or $50 million more, but he wanted to play in New York. Maybe Darren Fox does something similar where yes, sure, maybe he’s eligible for four years in 200, but maybe he takes four years in 160. I I don’t know. And same thing with WHMY. He’s eligible for five years for 271, but he might look at the team, look at the roster, and if the Spurs are winning and he wants to keep winning and keep everybody together, he might say five years, 200. It’s hard to sit here and say, and as fans, you know, like, hey, you know, take take the pay decrease to stay with the team to build the core, but you got to look from the other other perspective. If you’re worth $250 million, do you want to take a $50 million pay cut? Sure, I know there’s the argument, do you really need that much money? But again, you think of it as your current salary where you are. If you’re worth $50 an hour and somebody’s offering you 40 and you like your job, maybe you could go to uh say you have a position that would be more difficult and cause more work. Would you, you know, is it worth the extra $10 an hour? I’m I’m woring this terrible. I’m sorry. I’m so man these days off of messing me up. But I think you get the drift is like, you know, would you want a pay cut to stay in your position? I I guess that’s, you know, you can go somewhere else for more money, but you’re happier where you are. That’s a tough spot. And I I think the Spurs and Darren Fox will work work it out. And I feel like I’m getting longwinded now and repeating myself, so I want to wrap it up, guys. What do you think is going to happen? Darren Fox, will he sign a contract extension? And the biggest question I have for you is for how much? What do you think the number is going to finally mean? Four years for 200 plus? Do you think he might do a three-year? Like I think that would be the best for the team and maybe him. Three years with a team option. I don’t know. throwing things out there. Hit the thumbs up, support the channel, and subscribe for more Spurs content, which hopefully be coming a little more on the regular now. I’m back from like a little mini vacation. Thank you, and as always, go Spurs go. I stay.

De’Aaron Fox is offically eligble for his contract extensions. Should the Spurs extend Fox for 3 years? 4 years? Or not at all!?

  1. Sign him for 40 million for 2 years…need him to carry & give experience for the team until castle, harper & carter matures might have to take a paycut if he wants to stay..

  2. He's an elite pg in the NBA no doubt, but as some others have said here, he isn't a max player. We'll have to see what he does this seaason though. He's been great his whole career, but if he is a top 5 pg in the league this season, we may need to pay the man.

  3. Fox is clearly the second best player on the roster currently. He deserves to get paid $50 million a year +. A 3 year contract would be ideal for him and the Spurs. Fox could reenter free agency again when he turns 30 and gives the Spurs time when Castle and Harper become rookie extension eligible. This gives time to evaluate other players and create the most ideal roster salary.

  4. We are probably gonna pay him but after three years and we don’t win anything or even come close he will be traded

  5. Wemby will not sign a max extension but a supermax (most probably DPOY, ALL-NBA and such) it'll be way more than 220M/5Y

  6. We have to keep Fox,….he is exactly the product we want Dylan and Castle to be,….let's see how he jumps back from that pinky injury Go Spurs Go!

  7. That’s what I was going to say Rich let’s see how the Thunder handle theirs. Spurs are looking like a mirror of the thunder with developing their young core and keeping them together 👍🏽

  8. If they offer him less than max on the fourth year with player option and player approval on trades he might take it. Gives team cap room when Dylan and Carter get extensions and keeps a ton of talent on the roster.

  9. Id wait a year to see how Harper looks. We have too many players who will want max contacts and we can't pay them all

  10. The Spurs and Fox will have to meet in the middle…Spurs have wemby , sochan, castle contracts coming than Harper if he pans out in nba action.
U can't give everyone max contracts..
Its unsustainable in today's nba cap restraints.

  11. Yes, he's worth 200 million. If our picks perform well, we can trade for roll players and picks in 1-3 years.

  12. A $50 mil contract (salary in 3 yrs) is harder to trade than $35 mil (current). Maybe call Miami about Bam? Just spit balling.

  13. I don’t think he is worth 200m but his trade value could come handy. Maybe trade him in a few years for a big man and picks

  14. Let’s just keep them all as long as we can and cross the “who do we trade?” bridge when we get to it. Lots of stuff can happen in the meantime.

  15. We're about to build project Marvel bringing in billions over time. We have the money this dude is a steals leader clutch 4th quarter God and fastest player in the league. Give him his Money period.

  16. the issue is, if spurs give him max 4 year and they need to unload him by year 3. they will need to attach picks with him for someone to take his (bad) contract. I think it is becoming clear why we got him so "cheap"…

  17. I think this is a little more complicated. Players want to be on competitive teams. Fox left the Kings because they weren’t competitive. Winning teams also open up more avenues to make money on endorsements so you have opportunities to make up some of the money you left on the table in terms of salary.

On the other side, SA needs to be a place that players want to go to. And that has to be the organization because SA is not NYC or LA. Screwing Fox is not a way to make SA attractive to other players. And then there is the potential for Fox to provide the veteran guidance that CP3 provided last year.

With all this, I suspect he will not get an extension until later in the year. I think SA will want to know how much of a leader Fox is and how well he fits with Wemby. I also think SA will want to see how well these 3 guards mesh and what Harper looks like in the NBA. In the end, my guess is that there will be a 3-year extension with a team option for the 4th year when things get really expensive.

This year is going to be really interesting. I think a number of players understand that this is a “make or break” year for them. About 1/3rd of the team from last year is gone and we don’t know how well the new pieces will fit together. And we have 2 new coaches. If things go the way we hope, SA will be a playoff team. If Fox is the floor general we hope he is on a winning team, both sides will have an incentive to work things out.

  18. De'Aaron Fox is worth every penny of the max contract. The Spurs shot themselves in the foot by drafting Harper instead of trading up to get Cedric Coward.
