Raptors Sign Olivier Sarr: What This Means for the Team

Raptors sign Olivier Sar. What this means for the team? The Toronto Raptors are taking a bold chance by signing the older brother of a recent top NBA draft pick. Last week, the Raptors made the decision to wave Colin Castleton, which I pointed out as a significant step towards finalizing their roster. Currently, Toronto has one remaining spot on their main roster to fill. While I strongly believe that Canadian talent AJ Lawson deserves this opportunity, it doesn’t mean the Raptors can’t explore other options in the meantime. In fact, the latest news from the Raptors free agency activities suggests just that. The team announced that they are bringing in French center Olivier Sar on an exhibit 10 contract. This contract is a non-g guaranteed deal. As confirmed by the Raptors official announcement, which stated, “Per team policy, the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.” If the name Sar sounds familiar, it’s because Olivier is the elder sibling of Alex Sar, who was selected by the Washington Wizards as the second overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft. At 26 years old, Olivier entered the NBA as an undrafted player in 2021 after completing four years of college basketball with stints at both Wake Forest and Kentucky. Sar began his journey to the NBA by participating in the Grizzlies Summer League in 2021. Following that, he joined the Oklahoma City Blue, the G-League affiliate of the Thunder, and also played 46 games with the Funders main roster. During his time with the Thunder from 2021 to 2024, Sar averaged 4.8 points per game, shooting 56.0% from the field, 37.2% from beyond the ark, and 76.5% from the free throw line. Along with 3.5 rebounds in about 13.8 minutes of play per game, he was part of the Oklahoma City Blue team that clinched the G-League championship in the 2023 24 season. However, during game three of the finals, Sar suffered a devastating ruptured Achilles tendon injury, which sidelined him for the entire 2024 to 25 NBA season, both in the NBA and GLeague. It’s likely that he has been focused on rehabilitation to regain his playing strength after such a significant injury. Now, Sar has the opportunity to prove himself with the Raptors during training camp and the preseason. If he doesn’t secure a spot on the main roster, he still has the chance to make an impression that could earn him a position with the Raptors 905 in accordance with the terms of his Exhibit 10 contract. But here’s where it gets controversial. Will Sar’s past injury hinder his performance, or will he rise to the occasion and showcase his skills? What do you think? Is it wise for the Raptors to take this risk, or should they focus solely on players with a more stable track record? Share your thoughts in the comments.
