Breaking: De’Aaron Fox agrees to a 4-year/$229M max extension with the Spurs 💸 | NBA Today
We’ve got some breaking news here on NBA today. Shams Shirania back here with us. And Shams, what can you tell us about another extension out in San Antonio? I mean, a Spurs star Dear Fox has reached agreement on a 4-year $229 million max contract extension with the Spurs. That keeps him in San Antonio through the 2029 30 NBA season. This is uh a signing that’ll occur later on Monday. And Darren Fox and his rep Rich Paul navigated a trade, his preferred destination. The only place he wanted to be, San Antonio back in February. He wanted to be a Spur. He got there. He got his wish. And now months later, he gets the full max contract. And this is after the Spurs already drafted Dylan Harper have the reigning rookie of the year as well and Stefan Castle. That backcourt is loaded. So now he’s going to have no state taxes as well with this extension compared to his old California residence. But for Darren Fox, him Victor Womenyama him Victor him and Victor Womenyama have have developed a very close relationship and uh you know overall I think for the Spurs this is something that they wanted to make sure they got done early this off season. Yeah, Spurs making sure they made that move early. Seam’s catching a straight right there, bro. Taking a shot at California. Sean, thanks so much for that. A lot of traction with Sean Liz, too. Yeah, that is true, too. Uh, and now you have, you know, this Spurs team last season they really underachieved. They lost Wimby to the blood clot, then also finished under 500. So Mark, just what is the ceiling for this Spurs team now knowing that De’Arren Fox is going to be there with this extension? Well, first kudos to De’aran. Um, he got what he wanted? He’s back home. His wife’s from around there. He got paid and he’s with Wimi. But the question is, like a lot of people don’t know this, the Spurs haven’t been to the playoffs since 2019, which sounds kind of absurd to say. It is. Uh Wimi has not played in the postseason. I expect him to be healthy and take the team to the playoffs. I think they will be a playoff team. Um and then the next thing is people are like, “Well, De’Arren, you got these other two guards, great guards, Castle, the rookie coming in.” I don’t think they do anything right now. You let those two guys, let Harper grow, let Castle grow some more, and Fox will be a great mentor for them. They’re a really scary team if everybody’s healthy and it’s it’s hard to evaluate anything last season because so much happened to the Spurs from Greg Papovic having his health issues and then eventually stepping down. Mitch Johnson coming in in the middle of the year having to take over actually early into the year having to take over on the fly. We had blood clots um shut down his season right after the All-Star break and even Darren got there and they played a couple a little bit together but they didn’t really get to see what that combination can do. And so I think I’m excited to see what the Spurs do. I think this gives Dylan Harper some time to grow. This gives Stefon Castle some time to grow into those roles. And as Mark Mark said that, yeah, maybe three years from now that might be a decision they have to make, but it’s not a decision for gives a coach time to grow too with his first training camp. I think and let’s talk a little bit about Dear Fox and his fit with WBY though. Also, Mark, how do you think those two fit together on the court? Oh, you know what? I think that Fox’s time with Sabonis, yeah, probably could help, you know, pick and rolls and, uh, you know, Sabonis was certainly a kind of guy that could shoot threes, make a mid-range. Wim is just a such a unique, odd, different monster, right? And so that’s why I think training camp is important. Maybe what the Spurs should do is take a note out of like the Celtics when I covered them where they go somewhere. I don’t know if they’re doing training camp somewhere else, but when you have so many new pieces like that, bring them away. Yeah. So they could get to know each other and and build some camaraderie, too. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause]

Definitely overpaid for a player that hasn't produced any. They will be limited to what type of players they can add to their roster and before you know it Wemby will do for a extension. Then what?
…fox for the past two or three seadons he's been averaging 25+ppg…and im sure he'll continue to do that as the 2nd option onnthe team…out teo biggesr weakness last season was defense when wemby was subbed out we went and goy kornet for that…and scoring when wemby subbed out now we got fox for that…229 million waa worth it…and castle and harpper are young they won't have to feel all the pressure to be good fast and miss steps…we need a player like fox to be a playoff team…

I don't mind Shai getting his max, but Fox (nothing against him) isn't even a top 10 point guard or a top 30 player in the league! He's going to be paid more than Luka, who's easily a top 5 player. Who's running the Spurs these days? Doesn't sound like a Pop move to just throw money around like this. How the heck are they going to pay their REAL superstar (Wemby) and other key players when their deals come up (and soon)!?

San Antonio made the right decision. The two youngsters in the backcourt will get theirs in four years. Fox will be a unrestricted free agent and allowed to walk.

De'Aaron Fox isn't him. You can't win with tiny guards that can't defend. Unless they are super efficienct offensive players. Fox is a well below league average efficiency shooter. Very bad move. Will handcuff the Spurs.

So I’m guessing the max extension was agreed to to get him to come to San Antonio in the first place. This gets Fox his big contract while the Spurs are able to absorb it. The Spurs have to honor their handshake agreements because players talk.
