We alluded to it in the intro there. Eurob basket of friendly today between France and Montenegro and our young cats Alex Sar and Bal Koulabali right on queue with yesterday’s video being all about Bal Koulabali and how we expect and hope him to make a statement in year number three and a great start for those two in the friendly. Alex Sar was the best player on the floor tonight. AB excited to see it man. Yeah, this is just giving me a lot of optimism. A young guy in Alexar who we we talk about going into year two, he needs to be more aggressive and seeing him do that right now against Montenegro. I understand it’s a friendly doesn’t mean much, but these are the reps that he can hopefully build on and bring into year two. I have high hopes for this guy that he can be a top 10 center in this league. Defensively, we saw him in the summer league. Broke the block record. Eight blocks in a summer league game. That’s insane. Absurd. I think with his offensive game needs to back down more. post moves. That jump shot’s only going to get better. But it’s going to be exciting year for Alex R. And that idea of him being the best out of him, Bub, and Keshan is quite possible. I’m so high on him because again, from where he was from the summer league to now, you can see the mass improvement. And I always bring up the fact that he played in the Australian League, so it’s going to be quite the transition, but he’s going to have a great year, too. And I’m all for it. Road map. the rest of the show for you today in this first segment were all things belong Kulabali and Alex Sar and what we saw out of those two today really stellar stuff and Wizards Nation was tuned in uh throughout the day was nice to kind of get an update and finally see some basketball again. I know this is the dull part of the year uh for us especially creating content here for Wizards basketball but uh today a nice touch. Got to see some of our guys on the floor and saw some really good things. There was also some more roster news. Jaylen Martin. The team requested waiverss and effectively waved him uh today, which opens up a two-way spot. So, we’ll talk about that a little bit in the later segments. And then also the Wizards new city edition uniforms. Uh the Golds are back. Uh we’ll give you our thoughts on those as we continue on throughout the show. Today against Montenegro, overly overly very impressed and what Alex did today. An 8175 win for France over Montenegro. 19 points to lead all scorers. Alex Sar with four rebounds as well. He was seven of 10 from the field. So, you love to see the efficiency from Sar who also went three of five from beyond the arc. I know he had a really hot start to the game. I think he made his first two three-point shots. So, it seems like he cooled off a little bit since then. I personally was at work during the game, so I didn’t get to watch it live as it happened. I know a lot of Wizards fans were able to find a way uh to watch it at some point. So, if you did, let us know in the comments. and overall give us your impressions from what you saw out of Bal and Sar. But Alex Sar looked like he had an aggressive nature to him today just in some of the tape I was able to watch. One of the things that we said throughout even the summer league was you have those moments where he gets the basketball down low and you say just go up, man. Go up strong. Use the ability you have. Show us why you were number two pick in the draft and go up with some intensity. And that’s what we saw from Alexar today. I thought he asserted himself very well. You love to see him try to make a name for himself, especially with the assertiveness in terms of just shot attempts. He took 10 shots, but every shot he took was very high percentage and the efficiency speaks for itself at 70% today. So, overall, very impressed what Alex Sar was able to do today. And I think that’s a very good sign because, you know, those are no slouches that he’s going up against here in this Euro basket challenge. I know it’s a friendly as as we touched on, but it’s going to be exciting to see how he develops his game even more as the summer rolls on. That eword efficiency, you brought it up, Ben, that’s one thing that I need to see from him. Need to see a game where he’s not being too inconsistent with the amount of shots he takes. This is a take that I had on Balak Koulali, but a guy in Alexar who, let’s be honest, we really haven’t had a guy in Alexar center-wise with his potential as a score and defensively being a rim protector in so long. I mean, Marian Gortat, God bless his soul, was a great rim runner with John Wall. Daniel Gaffer was really athletic, but outside of the three-point line, it was really not much of help. And defensively, he was great. But with Alexar, you bring a guy who’s so freaking athletic. The 7 foot one wingspan, I mean, there’s a reason why I have so much stock on Alexar come year two. And friendlies like this, like I mentioned earlier, they build up and this is going to be exciting. I think he needs to show why um the Wizards took him number two overall. him and Risha Shay I think that that scenario where he was like hey I want to go to Washington he was the first guy like in a while where I’ve seen people aim their way to land here in DC. So that’s another reason why I love the guy he wanted to be here and I think he can be that cornerstone guy. I think he can be the best player. I love Trey Johnson but I think Alex can be the best player on this roster at the end of this year. So I it’s going to be exciting Ben and I’m all in for it. One thing that’s interesting too is I think these guys are going to have significant roles uh for this France team throughout the summer because Alexar did all of that today in only 14 minutes played. Bal Kulabali also only played in 15 and those two were extremely effective in the short amount of minutes that they had and that word efficiency that we’ve touched on so many times throughout this episode already. I mean the proof is right there. Those guys were the most efficient players on the floor for France. a plus minus for Alex Sar at 14 today in his 14 minutes. He was a main factor in that game and I think to kind of put an point of emphasis on there with the amount of minutes he played being low in this one because it’s a friendly I think you’d expect him to see him playing a very very large role uh come you know the main competition and those games that will take place uh throughout the month of August here as the summer continues to roll on. I think Alex Sar and Bal Kulabali are going to have very impactful roles. Bal Koulibali today, another guy that showed out for team France. Um, you know, just breaking down what we saw from him today. Kulabali in 15 minutes, 10 points from the field, had three rebounds to go along with it. Four of five on his field attempt. So, another very, very efficient performance from one of our Washington Wizards and two of two from beyond the ark. How many times yesterday did we say we love to see him develop his game from the outside? What would he be like if he was a reliable catch and shoot three-point shooter? Well, we saw a small sample size of it today, but you love to see him getting things done from the three-point line today. If he can shoot it from three, Ben, like his athleticism taking to the rim, he can pump fake defenders. I mean, he will be such a threat offensively. I think defenses are going to be on their toes thinking, “Hey, if he shoots it, we got to we got to uh we got to make sure that we close out, but if we close out too soon, he can go right by us.” in the athleticism that we brought up. I bring up the fact that AJ Johnson’s so freaking athletic, but Bal is a close second and this is going to be exciting. I’m hoping that those mechanics that he worked on this offseason because I for a while I thought maybe his jump shot is a little flat, but I think seeing a guy like him who I think he went two for two from three, I’m hoping that he can build on that and just 15 minutes like you mentioned, 10 points, three rebounds, four or five efficiency like alle like Alexar. I mentioned the law needs to be aggressive this year. Ben, I can’t see a a games stretch where he shoots four or five shots and the next game he shoots one, the next game 10. Like there has to be consistent basis and there’s no excuse. There’s no more Kyle Guzma here. So this is for Bel and I know a lot of people don’t want to mention the fact that there’s pressure on him. But essentially there is because again there’s so much expectations going on him and we need to see that offensive jump. Yeah. And and one of the things I noticed from him today, we saw the same level of intensity on the defense defensive side of the floor as well. One of the clips I was able to catch had a steal and he took it all the way in transition. He was assertive. Uh he had an opportunity to pass it off, but he decided uh to take it through the defense and made a pretty nifty layup at the rim. So, it shows you how they’re using this experience to maybe work on some things that’ll translate to the next level. I wanted to talk about Bal’s jump shot specifically because might have looked a little bit faster upon the clips that we saw today. We’ll touch on that next and some of the roster news that we got today when we come back on Lockdown Wizards. Time to fuel up and turn it up with 5hour energy transfusion that brings it the bold grape, ginger, and lime flavor of your favorite golf drink minus the alcohol into a quick energizing shot. Whether you’re sinking birdies or just making memories with friends, this one’s a hole-in-one for your energy game. Let’s be honest, some of the days on the golf course or off it, you just need that extra boost to stay sharp and energized. I can remember when I was playing a couple weeks ago, by the time you get to the 13th hole, man, you feel like you’re cooked out there. Especially if it’s hot outside, like the way it’s been in the DMV all summer, you need that boost. I was able to get my 5h hour energy shot whole 14 and I was able to keep my composure and then finished the round pretty solid. I shot a 93, which isn’t that good. Uh, but for my standard, that’s pretty good. If you’re better than me, let me know. Maybe we can uh run it up on the golf course one day. Golf is all about good times with good people and good flavors. Of course, the grape ginger lime flavor gives you the best parts of your clubhouse go-to without chasing down the bevart. We’ll touch on that when we come uh throughout the segment here on Lockdown Wizards. But Bal Koulabali, as we alluded to, two for two from beyond the arc today in the friendly against Montenegro. And from what I was able to see, his catch and shoot jump shot looked quicker than we had used to been. And maybe that’s something that’ll be impactful for a player like Bal in this upcoming season because he’s had those opportunities in catch and shoot scenarios in a Wizards uniform where maybe you feel like his jump shot he’s not getting it off quick enough or maybe he’s a little bit timid to take the shot because he doesn’t have that ability uh to get it off before he feels like he has too much of a contest from the defense. He took some tough shots in this game and the three-point shot that I did see him catch, he caught it right off the bounce, went up right away and got it off in maybe under 610 of a second, had the defender coming right at him and he was able to sink it. I think that’s going to be important for his game is to develop the way he shoots on catch and shoot opportunities because I know the the ball handle has been something that uh he’s been working on throughout the offseason. We commend uh the effort we’ve seen him putting in as a ball handler, but you don’t expect him to be a guy that’s going to create his own three-point shot at the dribble. That’s just not the kind of player Bal Koulibali is going to be at this level, which is fine. And we saw a lot of the comments in yesterday’s episode who were saying Bal just kind of seems like a a taller version of Lou Dort. Maybe he’s our 3 and D guy, which is a vital aspect of any team. You like you need a guy like that and maybe that’s the role he can serve. I think his potential is still more than that because of what he can do offensively with his athleticism. But if he does become a reliable option as a catch and shoot shooter like he was today, I think the Wizards are sitting pretty with that as an option because that’s going to allow for a ton of opportunities to space the floor. You know, if you have Bal Koulibali uh either waiting in the corner for a drive and kick opportunity, Bob Carrington takes it to the old Trey Johnson who looks really good with the basketball in his hands in the summer league and then you have a couple other players to the mix now. Cam Whitmore, a guy that we know is going to drive to the bucket a ton in a Wizard uniform. I think it’s just going to open things up offensively for a lot of different guys if he is able to be a consistent knockdown shooter when he is in a catch and shoot opportunity. In today’s NBA, the reality situation is you have to learn or be somewhat competent at shooting and I think if Bal can get that to one of his strengths, it’s like you mentioned Trey Johnson can kick it out to him. Bub Carrington, Alexar pick and roll, defenders will have to step up. They can’t go under screens anymore. This is going to be really essential for his development offensively. taking to the whole being able to take that mid-range shot is one thing, but being able to shoot it from three belise, I don’t know. I don’t think I have a set number that I want to see, but I do want to see him get better because like you mentioned, it helps out this Wizards team. And we need three-point shooting. I love Keshan George, course Kisser still on this roster, but the more three-point shooting can get makes you competitive night in and night out. And Bal Kulabali is already a great defender. He’s only going to get better. And I can’t wait to see how he does against the team’s opposing best players. I want to see him guard the other team’s best player, whether it’s Jiannis Andrempo, whether it’s Luca Donuch, the list goes on. Jaylen Brunson, I want to see him go up against the best guys because that’s what happens when iron sharpens iron. And I’m hoping Belali could make the autodefensive team whether it’s first, second, or third. Yeah, absolutely. I think he has the potential uh to be that kind of player, especially defensively and offensively. I think he continued just to get better and better as he ts on here in season number three. We got some roster news today. Abdullah with the Wizards requesting waiverss and waving Jaylen Martin which opens up an opportunity for someone to get on the two-way contracts. I know Tristan Buchvich and Jamir Watkins the only two out of three uh that you get on the two-way contracts which does uh cap you out at only playing in 50 games in the regular season as we touched on. So now that the third spot is open, I’m wondering what’s the plan here? Who do the Wizards bring in to fill that role? And I have a couple of guys in mind. We’ve seen people float the idea. Kadari Richmond who signed as an That’s my pick, man. I was thinking that as a restricted free agent or unrestricted free agent after the draft. He was a standout player at St. John’s University. Uh so that could be an option uh that you see for the Wizards here. Another guy that played pretty well throughout the summer league uh that I think a lot of people will forget about unless he finds himself on the two-way contract, Leaky Black. And I know he’s the guy that a lot of people wanted to root for just because Leaky Black is an awesome name. Like that is a sick name for a pro alete. Uh just the name Leaky is is so cool to me. But dude, he gave him some quality minutes in the summer league. And you saw him out there running with some of the main guys, especially in the win over Brooklyn. He you know, he’s not one of those guys that was out there knowing that he was never going to actually see an opportunity on the NBA floor. Leaky Black can play and I think he proved it. He had he showed some playmaking ability. He got it done on the defensive end. I would not be surprised if maybe there was a plan for him, but really it’s tough for me to tell, but I kind of wanted just to get your thoughts on it. AB, yeah, could Richmond, you mentioned earlier, I think he’s the guy that could take that spot. Leaky Black, I like what he did in the summer league, like you mentioned when those the starting guys, your two guys, Trey Johnson went out, Leaky Black stepped up along with AJ Johnson and took advantage of his minutes. My question is, Ben, is there a specific deadline where they have to fill that last spot or is it throughout this you can go into the season with a void spot of that two-way spot? Uh, I’d imagine they’d have to do it sometime around when camp starts before the regular season. I’d have to double check on that for you. Uh, Kadari Richmond, just kind of, you know, getting gauging the temperature of the player he is. So, he’s a guy that’s a a guard, obviously, and uh the Wizards have a decent amount of talent at the guard position, but they’re always looking to find more options. Black fits that mold as well. Last year at St. John’s, 12 and a half points per game, six and a half rebounds. So, a guy at 6’6, he’s got good reach, and I think he has good defensive potential as well at his size, 205 pounds as well. Shot 48.7% of the field and also added five assists. He was a guy that kind of did everything for the Red Storm last year. And I think there’d be a pretty good chance that you’d see him take up that two-way role, but it’ll be something to monitor as the off season continues on here, getting closer and closer every single day uh to Wizards basketball being back. But still feels like we got a long way to go, but it’ll be here before we know it. Yeah, you mentioned it can do it all. Versatility. I go back to what Will Dawkins has always preached. He wants guys that can do everything. It’s nice to have guys that can shoot, but if a guy that can shoot, defend, take you to the rim as a leader. You check off all those boxes, you are within the timeline of what the Wizards are trying to build here. Wizards released some new uniforms. The golds are back. We’ll give you our thoughts on those when we come back here on Lockdown. Wizards. Ever wish managing your money felt easier? With Monarch money, it can. All right, the gold uniforms are coming back and the Wizards have just continued to rehash old uniforms the past couple years and bring them back. We saw the teal look, the white one, that nostalgic Gilbert Arenas day look, I guess, come back recently. Now that gold jersey uh makes his way back with a new twist. It’s got the more modern Wizards look to it with the stripe on it, which I think has kind of become unpopular among the fan base. I I feel like a lot of the fan base is just tired of the current uniform that’s been in place for what seems like so long. that classic Wizards with a white stripe, red uniform, white one, uh, whatever it may be. To be honest, I’m not really that moved by this, Abdul. I’m just I don’t know if it’s because it’s kind of before my time where I really got to watch this team a lot. I never really got to see them play in that gold uniform. Or maybe I caught the tail end of it because I started watching the Wizards in 2009, 2010, something like that. I was in first grade I think I started watching this team. And I know a lot of people watching are probably like saying 2009 you were in first grade. That’s crazy. Like I’ I’ve been watching this team since the 70s or the 80s. I know we get a ton of comments like that, but I know I’m young, so maybe maybe I don’t understand the appeal uh to the gold uniform the the same way you guys do. I kind of wish they just got new regular uniforms. I feel like we’re due for some sort of rebrand here. What do you think, Abdullah? I agree with you. I think it it does suck going back to the old uniforms. In my opinion, my favorite ones have been the cherry blossom ones. I I love that the Mats did it and the Wizards. I think that’s the best uniform that we’ve had, but we need new ones. I mean, these old ones, Gilbert Arenas, no disrespect, I just didn’t like it. I It just doesn’t look good. There’s no like there’s no flavor. It’s just It’s like so dull in my opinion. And maybe it’s because again, like you mentioned, I I didn’t start watching Wizards basketball until 2013, 2014. The mil was it the the Military Star ones? That was that was a The Stars and Stripes from 2017. Yeah, that was good too, Trey. But the this one bringing back the old city, I just not the biggest fan of it. We need to bring in new jerseys because it’s just getting redundant bringing back these old jerseys when clearly there’s so much design out there and there’s probably Wizards fans out there that can give out this team some good designs and I would be all for it. So, unpopular opinion. I remember back in 2014 when they released, you remember that uh blue uniform they had? It was kind of red at the top until it got to the lettering that said Washington and then it was it was navy blue below that. Uh they wore those uniforms as an alternate for quite some time. Those were actually a really uh favorable jersey for me. I I like that one a lot. I don’t know. I just feel like the Wizards keep going back to these old uniforms. And I feel like the only time where we’ve seen like example of when going back to an old looking uniform is successful is like the one the Commanders put out a couple weeks ago. And I think there was pretty obvious reasons why people were so uh inclined to those uniforms, why they think they’re so much better. Because let’s be honest, uh the Commanders rebrand that was done under Dan Snder, those uniforms stink. I I mean like the the black one kind of grew on me a little bit. Like the Hail Mary makes it a little bit better, I guess, because that’s such a incredible moment you got to experience wearing those jerseys. I know a lot of people that didn’t grow up with the black uniform. I mean, us included. That was never a thing obviously until, you know, three years ago or whatever it was. So, it’s not as favorable, but the white commanders jersey is just so terrible to me. And even though they won all those games in the postseason wearing it, the the burgundy on it is not the right color. It it just wasn’t right. And that’s why I’m glad Josh Harris and the new ownership group went back to the Super Bowl era throwback and and like that looks like the uniform that we grew up watching. And I’m personally I’m, you know, I’m not one that’s going to complain about the team rebranding. Like I don’t care about the name. I have no no reservations with them with the current name that’s in place. But I’m glad they were able to kind of go back and give some of these fans that were looking for that feeling of the team that they grew up watching. And I know the Wizards maybe have tried to like emulate that, but the Wizards just like don’t have enough prosperous history to really give people that nostal. You’d have to go back to wearing the Washington Bullets uniform maybe for people to feel like that. Like the West Sunell jersey that I have, I’ll break it out at some point on the stream. Like the the the same jersey they wore the night that they won the NBA Finals in 1978. Uh maybe they went go back to that jersey and people would be all excited about it. But bringing back the the uniforms from 2005 through 2010, like this doesn’t really do much for me. Yeah. Know, I agree with you. It doesn’t really push the needle in my opinion. I don’t know about you, Ben. Like the old logo with the DC, I like that compared to the new one right now. I know, but the W with the Wizard, that was tough, too. Yeah, I I had mixed feelings about that one. I don’t know. Like, I liked it and I didn’t really like it, but Simplicity has killed Logo. I mean, I got the I got a rack right there. Actually, I’m I’m Yeah. See, I I like that, but also when they had DC, like I like that, too. The bullets. I don’t know. The new one is like to me, it’s so bland. I mean, obviously, if you’re if you’re listening to the audio version, you you will not see the hat that I’m holding up right here, of retro Washington Bullets hat. It’s one of my favorite hats, but this logo was awesome. Like, let’s be real. You got the the the two L’s right here with the basketball for a jump ball. So, I kind of liked how they they paid homage to that with the hat that you have on your head. And I’ve always been a fan. And like I liked when they had that at midc court at one point. I don’t know. I just feel like we need some sort of rebrand. Like we’re we’re in this new era of Wizards basketball. That’s that feels it’s dudes too. It has to. Yeah. Like this feels so different than Wizards basketball from the last 10 years with with with crappy terrible GMs that had no clue what they were doing. Now that we have a front office that has given this team a new direction, a new sense of life, per se. I mean, maybe like you should just bring the fan base with that. go through a no look because or new look because I feel like a lot of the fans who were checked out for so many years under the previous regimes and if they’re trying to get back into it, I don’t know, maybe some new uniforms, new logo, something like that will will get people to get more excited about the team. Why why are we bringing back old when there’s not much like history behind it? Maybe I’m just hating though. I don’t know. Am I hating? If if you if you love the gold uniforms, let us know. Like I don’t not going to fault you for liking them. Like I think they look fine and I Gilbert Arena’s dropped 60 points in them at some point. So I guess there’s that. But it’s just for me. I don’t know. It’s just not I think ultimately uh winning is going to bring this team the fans back. I mean let’s it’s same thing the Commanders. Like I don’t I don’t give a damn what they wear unless they win. If they win they they can wear they can wear the dumbest thing in the world and I don’t care. But if we’re going to be trash next year, I guess let’s at least look good doing it right. No, I agree. I agree. I agree. We do. Next year is all about development, of course. So, when I when I say that, I’m I’m being facitious. I’m not saying let’s go out there and be trash, but we’ll be okay with it because the uniform’s cool. I don’t I don’t care about that. I don’t really care about the uniform at the end of the day. I just think it’s it’s something interesting that we could talk about. I mean, this time of year, we don’t have as much basketball to talk about. So, when when are we ever going to really talk about uniform again? I always think it’s stupid when the commentary is involved about a name or a uniform when there’s real things happening. Right now is like the time we can talk about this. Yeah. I was going to ask you while we have the time, what NBA in general, who what’s like your favorite like jersey style? For me, that throwback Raptors with the dinosaur, the the purple one, dude. Oh my goodness. I love it. I love it. So, I got to get one of those jerseys. Man, I got to think about this. The Laker black ones of the Mamba. I I like those, too. I gotta think. Yeah, there’s a lot to choose from. Super Sonics had cool jerseys. Oh yeah. Oh, the Thunder the orange. Do you remember the orange? Uh was it orange or red that they had during the West Brok days? I forgot what um I for I gota look into it, but that was one of my favorite ones, too. I’m trying to think right now. I got to like refresh my memory. Um there’s that there’s that retro Memphis Grizzly one, the the teal blue. The Pistons had the one with the the Mustang on it, the horse. Mhm. That looked really cool. the LeBron the Cavs when the LeBron’s first tenure that that was tough. I liked I just pulled it up. There’s actually so many like this the Phoenix Suns had a really cool retro uniform. Uh man, the the Rockets. I forgot about this Rockets uniform. The blue one uh that’s got the Rocket uh emblem through it. That was cool. I feel like we’re doing a disservice right now because people who are not watching the stream like probably can’t even like visualize what we’re talking about. But it’s just funny to think. But let us know what you guys think about the Wizards uniform that we saw uh they’ll be wearing as a city edition. The gold uniform is back. Do you guys care? Do you guys think they’re due for a rebuild? Let us know. Are you a good designer, Ben? You think you could cook up something? No, it’s not my thing. No, I suck at art, too, man. I’ve got no artistic ability at all. The only thing I’ve I’ve done most my life was talk about sports all day. Just annoying people talking about sports. They looked better than the other Guys, Rischer and Yabusale looked good also but I’m just worried about Bilal and Alex. Bet fans will complain with his three point volume but he was hitting them. I’m not gonna act like a lot of other people and assume I know Sarr’s ceiling, the guy does hit nearly 40% of threes in the corner.
