Should the Bulls Just Trade Josh Giddey? YOUR Mailbag Questions Answered

Things have been pretty quiet around the league. You’re not seeing any big headlines outside of maybe some of the Jonathan Kaminga and the Warriors drama. Not as much as of late on the Josh Giddy front as well. And with not a lot going on with the Bulls, the Bulls kind of stuck in limbo right now until we get ink to paper on that new Josh Giddy deal. I thought it was a good time to bring the old mailbag episodes where I answer your questions whether they’re Bulls related, NBA related, or anything for that matter. I received a lot of questions and I’ll try to get to as many of them as possible. Let’s get into it. So, what’s going on everyone? and you’re listening to Bull Central here. Hope you’re all doing well. Hey, also be sure to subscribe if you haven’t already to help keep that algorithm going during the dead of the off season. About 50% of you watching are not subscribed, so would greatly appreciate it. Our first question comes to us from random blanks. In hindsight, who should the Bulls have drafted instead of Patrick Williams? I mean, this one is easy. Obviously, Tyrese Hallebertton. Like yes, even with the major Achilles injury that he just sustained in the finals, and sure, there’s a world where he doesn’t come back the same player, but he’s clearly the best player in that 2020 draft class, not named Anthony Edwards, who obviously was not available when the Bulls were on the clock. The only thing I will say though, and I’ve said this before in the past, while really people like to go in on the Bulls for taking Pat with fourth overall pick and not selecting Hallebertton instead, Hallebertton went 12th overall. There were a lot of teams that passed up on Tyrese. doesn’t make it better or change the fact the Bulls in hindsight would have gladly taken him over Patrick Williams. But this wasn’t a situation where it was a clear no-brainer that Tyresese Hallebertton should have gone that early. And what I’ll also say is that draft class in general, especially the players that were taken after Patrick Williams, who haven’t been that great. Oddly enough, the Bulls have two of those guys on their team now. And Isaac Aoro, who was taken fifth, and Jaylen Smith, who was taken 10th. But between Pat where he was drafted and Tyres Hallebertton where he was taken a lot of just okay players in between Nekongu Killian Hayes Obi Toppin I would just feel a lot differently if there were multiple star level players that were taken right after Patrick Williams that the Bulls missed out on. Next up we’ve got this question from Cameron McGee. With Giddy’s contract reportedly being a bit messy, what sort of fallout could you see happening if he signs a deal just to request a trade out of Chicago? What sort of hall could we expect? Uh, well, I mean, it all depends on the figure that the Bulls sign him to that would determine what kind of trade hall the Bulls could get for Josh Giddy. That’s really a big factor in determining a player’s trade value. Not necessarily their skill and what they bring. That’s obviously still important, but what kind of money are they making and how much is that going to impact your cap sheet? Like for Zack Lavine, I mean, the Bulls had a really hard time trading him. Not because he was trash and no one wanted him. He’s a great player, but what made his trade value so low was because of his max contract and teams being unwilling to take on that max deal. So, if the Bulls sign him to a team friendly deal, say it’s that $20 million range, and say it’s on a shorter term contract, like 3 years with a team option on the final year, that becomes a much more enticing contract to trade for if you’re one of the other 29 teams in the NBA. If it’s 5 years, $150 million, yeah, teams aren’t touching that. But even at that team friendly deal, I really don’t know if you’re able to get that much for Giddy. I mean, a lot of it is also dependent on how well he plays next season, which you’d have to think he’s not going to be in the best headsp space mentally if he’s forced to accept the Bulls low ball offer. And how will that impact his overall play? I don’t know. It’s tough to say what the Bulls could truly get for him in the form of a trade if the relationship fractures because of this contract deal and he pushes his way out of Chicago. Next up, we’ve got Bulls in four. How well will Noah Asenge fit on this roster since we have a player like him and have the same build in Modis Bucellis? Uh yeah, similar players, similar play styles, yes, similar frame and build. Uh but I think Asen and Modis actually together will fit fine. They’re both pretty versatile players and being able to play the three or the four. They can guard multiple positions. As Sen appears to be a better rim protector and rim runner, while Modis is much more with the ball in his hands than Asen is and also has a better jump shot. Despite their similarities, I actually think their skills would complement each other nicely. Next up, we’ve got Williams Ornado. Anything that can be done about Javon Carter’s contract seems like the odd guy on our team. I mean, yeah, both him and Vuch are the odd guys out in terms of the timeline and the direction the Bulls are trying to take. The biggest difference between Carter and Vuch is that well, VH is still a good player and a starter on this team while Javon Carter can’t get rotational minutes. As far as what can be done, I mean, the Bulls could wave him, even wave and stretch his 7.8 $.8 million contract over the next couple of seasons, but they’re not going to do that. They’d rather have their cap sheet clean going into next summer with Javon Carter’s contract coming off the books. This isn’t like a Damen Lillard situation where the Bucks more or less had to act quickly to keep Giannis happy and maintain being a contender. Like, the Bulls are in no rush to wave and stretch the contract to Javon Carter when it’s going to expire at the end of the season anyway. And then, of course, the only other thing they could do is trade him, which no one is going to trade straight up for Javon Carter. It would have to be included as a salary filler in a trade package. But even then, I don’t really see that happening. The Bulls are likely stuck with him, my friend, at least for one more season. Next up, we’ve got a dog. What inspired you to make a Bulls news channel? Well, I don’t know if I would call it a news channel. I’m not a reporter. I’m not an insider. I’m just a big Bulls fan. Always have been. And I like talking about the Bulls. That’s really it. As far as what inspired me, to be honest, it was more curiosity. You know, I started this thing during the pandemic. I was afforded more time because no one was going out and doing anything. I was bored. started watching a lot more YouTube, listening to podcasts, and I thought, hey, there isn’t that much out there when it comes to overall dedicated Bulls content, which was something I wanted. Now, that of course has since changed, and you’re seeing a lot of BS content creators explode with a lot of great stuff out there, but at that time, I just felt like there wasn’t much out there. So, I thought I would try my hand at it and create my own YouTube channel and see what happens, see where it takes me. Didn’t really think it would go anywhere, if I’m being honest. And I actually thought I would just abandon the idea after a month, but it grew quickly and now it is where it is today. I will say though, it’s becoming a lot more to manage now that I have two kids. I’ve got the NBA channel as well. I don’t know how much longer I’m going to be able to do this, but for now, I’m still enjoying the ride while I can. Next up, we’ve got Wax. Who do you think is a realistic final piece or two to this roster that we can obtain to make a future deep playoff run, assuming our main core is Giddy, Kobe, Modis, and Noah. looking for a center replacement. Uh, it’s a tough question and I had to think about this one for a bit because I don’t think there are really that many center options that are actually practical for the Bulls both from a timeline and contract perspective. And not even just a center, but any realistic piece that would put the Bulls in a position where they could conceivably compete for a deep playoff run. Like sure, I could throw out, you know, pie in the sky dream of the Bulls trading for Giannis, but we know that’s not going to happen. I could say, well, maybe they could use someone like Akong Wu. That is more realistic of an option to try and trade for. But Akong Wu isn’t suddenly giving you a deep playoff run. Uh Nick Claxton is a guy I think could be interesting, though. He’s still young, only 26, but he’s kind of aging out of what the Nets are trying to do, which is just tank for a number of years. Uh would be interested to see if they’re moving him. His contract isn’t that great. Uh but it is a descending deal where he’s going to be making $25 million this upcoming season, but it’ll go down to 20 million by the 2728 season, which is the final year of his deal. Uh he fits the Bulls timeline, fits the mold, young player with experience. He’s a big-time rim protector, a lob threat, something the Bulls have been looking for to replace Vevich with. Uh I guess he would be my ideal realistic piece to add to this court. Obviously depends on how much you’d have to give up for him. If it’s multiple first round picks, yeah, hard pass. Next up, we’ve got Kobe Muse. What is the Bull’s honest, genuine outlook for the next 5 to 10 years in your opinion? I mean, here’s the thing, man. And I talked about this on a recent video I did on my NBA channel. One of the big things I look at when I’m assessing a team’s future is what have they done historically? How do they typically operate? What is their MO? And the Bull’s MO is not great. You know, we thought things were going to maybe change when they hired a new front office. We thought they were going to take this franchise more seriously. And it’s been kind of the same thing. more focus, more emphasis on the bottom line rather than actually trying to win at the highest level. So, while I do think the Bull’s future as it stands right now is trending in the right direction with the young guys they have, they have all their draft picks, they’ve got some stuff to work with, but at the end of the day, does it matter as long as the Rhinorfs are still owning the team. So yeah, general outlook over the next 5 to 10 years, I could see it being a situation where the Bulls run into some dumb luck. Either where they draft a franchise level player that is going to turn things around or they make a trade for a player that maybe seems okay when they make the trade and suddenly breaks out into a star that they need. Next up, we’ve got Natim. Uh, percent chance Kobe White is traded by the deadline and what type of return will the Bulls receive? Well, I’ll answer this question on what I think the Bulls will do and not necessarily what I think the Bulls should do based on what I know of this team. also based on recent reporting that came out which indicated the Bulls view Kobe as a part of their long-term plan. So I would give it maybe a 15% chance that he’s traded by the deadline and that only happens if Kobe gives him an indication that he doesn’t have any intention on resigning with the team or you get some really compelling offer that is just too good to pass up. As far as what kind of return to expect, I mean a lot of it depends on how well he’s playing in season. But assuming it’s about the same or what we saw from Kobe last season, especially post all-star break, I would hope that you could at least get a first round pick and a young promising player, if not two first round picks. I’m basing a lot of that off of what the going rate has been for some players getting traded recently where you had Desmond Bane garnering four first round picks. Mikuel Bridg’s last offseason, six first round picks. Those were massive overpays. Yes, but regardless, Kobe should be able to net half of that, I would like to think. Anyway, next we’ve got this one. Am I the only one who believes Giddy and White aren’t the guard duo of the future if we want to make a deep playoff run? I just don’t think there is much of a differencemaker in the two. In fact, I think IO offers more in his two-way ability. I mean, you’re definitely not the only one. In fact, I feel like there are actually a lot of Bulls fans who are unsure about this notion of Kobe and Giddy being the back court of the future. Even I myself feel that way at times. And it’s part of the reason why I’m hesitant when it comes to paying Kobe a big extension, which he is going to command. And then you end up having $50 to $60 million a year on your payroll combined for both Josh and Kobe. Yes, they were great post all-star break. I do think they would be a fun duo to watch and the Bulls would be decent having them as their starting back court. But is it really going to move the needle for the Bulls to bring them into contention? Like that’s why so much is riding on guys like Modus and Aseni to really thrive and break out because a team led by Kobe and Giddy isn’t going to be leading you to a deep playoff run. There are just things that have to also come into play that are going to be able to make that happen to where the Bulls are back in contention. Anyway, appreciate all of you submitting your questions. Keep the questions coming. I’ll try and answer as many as I can in the comments. And as always, be sure to subscribe and I will see you in the next one.

  1. Assuming Noa as at least a decent rotation forward, what do you think of the idea of a smallball lineup of Giddey-White-Okoro-Essengue-Matas? Solid shot blocking from the 2 6’10” guys and pretty good group rebounding, especially from Giddey at the PG. Could play very fast.

  2. They've already pissed him off, so they may as well trade him. It's not like Giddey was great for a couple of outlier games, he was great for half a season, and it makes perfect sense that he took time to reach that potential given he was starting on a new team in a new city, and playing with ball dominant players. Let's not forget he was also great his first two seasons before having a below par, but still impactful, third season. He put up LeBron, Jokic, Luka numbers for half a season, and they're trying to lowball him because they screwed up so many contracts in the past.

  3. With or without Josh Giddey, I’m having a hard time getting excited about the upcoming Bulls season. I guess they showed some heart and some upside the last or two of the season, but that pitiful loss in the play-in was incredibly disappointing.

  4. It depends on what we can get for him. Id hate to get nothing out of it considering we traded our best asset for him. One for one, Caruso for Giddey was a bad trade. Are there any interests in him from other teams? Off the cuff, I say no. I’m personally not interested in making an already bad trade worse.

  5. Zach IS trash, and 💯 NOBODY wanted him.

The Reinsdorfs are parasites. They will continue to dangle a carrot of mediocrity in front of the corporate psl holders

  6. Jamal don't ever stop the Bulls channel please man; I've been here for like four years 😭 literally since before 8th grade man lock in lol

  7. Not running this unit back is insane. Their record playing together is proof of concept (with the exception of Pat, Vuc, and Billy). They have good chemistry. They played great together, and Matas barely got cooking. A couple adjustments and this team is gonna be a problem in a couple seasons.

  8. Almost same team next season, almost same results with Bulls front office expecting slightly better results. AK and ME have said as much repeatedly, they want to see how things go to determine who they bring back. Why Front Office keeps Vuc and Carter is because they have to pay them and they have no one offering anything for them so they will be with the Bulls for all of 2025-2026. Their mentality is let’s see if we can roll with no over priced Stars and see what we can do. Ownership bought in by extending the lot and encouraging cash considerations for second round picks because the cheaper the end of the bench players the better. Especially when they’re saying Terry, Phillips, Noa even PWill are still being developed. Don’t see how they can keep Giddy, Coby and Ayo unless they can negotiate very favorable deals because in 2026 they can all be UFA if Josh takes the QO because he believes he can get his $30M/yr after one more year. If we lose any or all maybe they can keep Huerter who is also UFA along with Collin’s and they have Tre. They can string Bulls fans along for years with our young guys need to develop and next draft add another 18-19 year old (maybe two if Portland pick conveys). I believe AK when he says they want to show modest improvement each year for the next few years. No pressure if they can do that from ownership, they are all extended. If they can resign Vuc for another year at a favorable I wouldn’t put them past doing so. Guess they figure players can develop in practice and sitting on the bench watching. Go Bulls. 😬

  9. The bulls just got Giddy not too long ago. Trading players left and right does not build continuity among the team. This did not happen in the 90’s bulls. One reason why they won titles.

  10. Giddy to GSW. Kuminga lto Jazz. filipowski to Bulls!!!
If have to sign Giddey, do 3’year. Sign for $26. If he has double double a pay 28. Year 2 a double Double. Gets him 30. Third year is team option.
