As as Hurricane was saying here, I’m definitely just getting the getting the scoop. Getting the scoop on on Yeah. Chandler Parsons coming to Denver. It’s crazy. Chandler Parsons. What did I miss? Micah Parsons. I’m just kidding. Oh, Micah Parsons. Getting scoop on Parsons to Denver. Uh, no. Uh if Micah Parsons becomes a Denver Bronco, then they are going to they they might go to the Super Bowl. Yeah, they I mean they’re already they’ve already got a crazy defense, but like if there is a weakness, it’s like getting another like elite pass rusher. Like I think that could really really be crazy for them. Yeah. Jonathan Cooper with uh Zack Allen, Franklin Meyers, DJ Jones, Green Law, then you got Micah, Brandon Jones, Huonga, Jade, Riley, Tertan. It’s crazy crazy unit right there. Duh. Might be dirty, y’all. So Ryan, you know, we were having some conversations offline about kind of where we are currently with some players on the Denver Nuggets roster and and really maybe there are some things that are on the table uh for these players in terms of contract extensions and everything that’s kind of on the way. So I I want to talk about Christian Brown first. Okay. Now Christian Brown, y’all had a very good season. you know, from a for for me, I think he took like a leap that I just truly didn’t expect him to take just because I don’t know how realistic it is to, you know, expect a player to become that much better, you know, in one calendar year. But Christian Brown did it. Yeah. I mean, yeah, you were right. You know, he was, you know, he ended up replacing, you know, Kavius Cwell Pope with even more than I think uh I expected him to be able to do. Not necessarily as a shooter and not as much as a defender, but I do think he got even better as the year went on. Uh but the play finishing stuff with him was really good. You know, you look at his uh his his grade out on uh basketball index, his finishing and stuff, he was really good in terms of his overall like just finishing talent. Uh perimeter defense and isolation defense, he actually graded out in a 97 percentile leaguewide. Again, not a great three-point shooter, but he can make them shot 39% this year. He was a big part of Yep. passing good passer. He’s a big part of the reason why James Harden struggled down the rest of that series. And honestly, you know, I think I shared this uh not too long ago. I’m not sure if you saw it, uh, but I put up a a matchup matrix between him and SGA. I don’t know if people realized this. When SGA was guarded by Christian Brown last year on 123 possessions per 75, SJ averaged 18.4 points per game on 57 true shooting when Christian Brown was the primary matchup all season. So, this is regular season. It’s a crazy number. And we we talk about like, okay, did Denver miss Contavius Caldwell Pope? Of course. Like it it would have been really nice to have both of those guys that they could have gone to. That would be that would be crazy. Uh but like for a onetoone replacement in the starting lineup, Christian Brown did about as well as anybody could have possibly expected. And it’s one of the reasons why I think locking him into an extension, especially if you could get a reasonably good deal. Now, there’s people that don’t think that 20 million a year for Christian Brown is a reasonably good deal. I happen to think that it’s perfectly reasonable, especially with where the cap continues to go and you’re locking in a guy that you know fits extremely well with Nicole Joic and the culture that Denver has already established. So, I’m I’m curious what your actual kind of per season value for him would be and where you think Denver should get to with him. So, just to give you some names that I think are in the range for Christian Brown at this point. Okay, listen to these name. Let me know what you think, Ryan. Okay, so Terry Rosier obviously got a huge deal from from Charlotte that ended up being like a vast overpay. Charlotte’s not an intelligent team, right? $24 million. Terry Roger. Cameron Johnson 23.6. Male Bridges, who just got a four-year 150 extension, uh, he’s been making 22.75 or 22.725. DeAndre Hunter, 22.5. Al Kosma, another overpay, 22.5. You get Aaron Gordon, who’s currently at 21.6, obviously got an extension for $30 million a year, four years. Uh, and then you get Dylan Brooks, who’s 21 and a half. Alice Caruso has 20. Josh Hart is at 20.2. And then you got Lonzo Ball at a flat 20. And you got Jared Allen at a flat 20. I think that’s about the range for Christian Brown right there between 24 to$20 million. Yeah, it’s tough. Like you you don’t necessarily know. And one of the things that people have to remember with restricted free agency is that a lot of times you’re paying for future value as well. More so than like more so than a veteran extension on a rookie extension you and these guys they understand it their agents understand it. The teams understand it. You’re paying for future value just as much as you are paying for current value. So within that realm like I think Denver is perfectly reasonable to be going for like a a 20 million to$22 million deal. Uh, I had initially valued him as as higher than that, like early on in these in these talks and in this off season. I had said something as as closer to like 26 27 28 million in that general range, thinking, well, if you’re not worried about the salary cap, if you’re not worried about the luxury tax and the second aprons, then why does it matter? Like, that would be prerequisite with where you think he’s going to be. But Denver does have to be conscious of that, of course. So that’s I think a very reasonable take and I think like the name that I had pulled out was Josh Hart. Four years 80 million like four like about four years$ 81 million. That is a perfectly reasonable contract. Like if Denver signed that to Christian Brown tomorrow, Nuggets fans should be over the moon about that deal. That is a perfectly reasonable deal for a player that is the fifth starter on a championship caliber team. Also too, you know, Ryan, like some of this is what if he has what does another leap for Christian look like, right? So, he increases his three-point volume, I think, is one of them we talked about. I think he has is an even better point of attack defender next year. And I would say more consistent. I think they’re going to adjust their scheme a lot. I would expect Adam’s going to play more zone. Christian Brown’s going to have the primary responsibility, but guess what? He’s not going to have to make up for Mike Porter Jr. anymore. Cameron Johnson, I think, will stabilize a lot of the defense. Aaron Gordon should be back to a better defensive level next year. And then Joic and Murray, let’s say they come back, they have better defensive season than they did last year because the situations around them aren’t like completely tumultuous. And then now the Nuggets are starting off like an NBA basketball team as opposed to last year when Yokic just basically had to go like supernova every game to give them an opportunity. And then you bring in Tim Hardaway Jr., you bring in having Bruce Brown again, Brown and Brown law firm back in action together. Deon Holmes is there, Pton Watson is there, Valenunis is there. There is a real question here, Ryan, where he can maybe move closer to Derek White, and I mean like Derek White from like 2022, you know, right before he went to the Celtics, move into that area where he’s a legitimate ball handler. He’s a legitimate shooter. He’s a legitimate force on the defensive end and he’s accounting for now a larger portion of your offense and your creation and now you’re paying him $20 million a year. I think there’s a path where that deal looks not bad because $20 million a year is not bad for anybody, but not not great for for for Christian because he’s already outperforming it before he even gets to the contract. 100%. Like you think about where Jokic is right now and like some of these super max extensions like these guys are making 50 $60 million kind of in that general range. Like that is a like if Christian’s making a third of that like I I don’t think anybody should be sneezing at it. And the fact is is that if you are a team, if you’re a really good team, you’re going to have a lot of players that are paid a lot of money. And so Murray’s probably overpaid on his current deal, like unless he continues to grow into more of a consistent kind of regular season contributor. Aaron Gordon, I think, is fairly fairly paid. Cameron Johnson, I think, is fairly paid. Christian Brown, I I had him as the like in in our NBA top 100 that’s going to come out, I think I voted him as the 92nd best player in the NBA. Josh Hart was 91st. So, if he’s in that general contract tier, nobody should be nobody should be thinking too crazy about it. Sure. On the other side, we’re going to finish this conversation, but there’s actually a really interesting conversation about Cam Johnson and what his numbers could look like for the Denver Nuggets or if they should even do it right now or wait. We’re going to talk about all that here and more at Lockdown Nuggets. Now, we’ve all been there. Shout out Bill Burr. All right, Ryan. Yes, sir. So, we think four years, 80 to $84 million a year for Christian Brown. That’s about where the bar is, right? Yeah. I I think it could go up to like 90. It depends on on how like strongly his agency and whatnot, how much they want to tie themselves to Denver. I think that a lot of these guys are going to probably take slightly lesser value in order to stay next to Jokic. I think the Christian is a very very important test case for that because e even I am like and I’m pretty high on Christian and his independent value but like I know he played 80% of his minutes with Jokic. I know that he’s pretty Jokic dependent overall in terms of what he does well and how Jokic kind of helps with that. So, we’ll see what happens, but I think 80 to 90 million that 20 to 22.5 average annual value makes sense. Okay. Well, there’s, you know, Joic already, you know, we can talk about this. I know this has been talked about a little bit nationally, uh, and also with us, but Joic obviously he decided not to resign with the Denver Nuggets this year. Um, in terms of after for, you know, he has a player option for 2027 28, I believe. Uh, and that was a little bit of noise, but not really. You know, Ryan, I did talk about this that if he signed this year, it’ be a three-year deal worth about $70 million uh a year. If he waits for next year, it’ll be a four-year deal that I believe is $293 million if I remember the exact number correctly. Do you remember what it is? Yeah, it’s it’s a not quite 283 29. I actually, you know what it might be. So basically it is the same contract actually yeah it’s four years like 290 is the is would be the number where it would effectively be 70 million for the first three seasons and then another 80 million on top of that. So it’s it’s the same contract for the first three years but then tacking on an additional year. I understand why he’s waiting. I understand why other people would make it a story, especially when you’ve got teams like the Lakers that are saying we’re holding our cap space until 2027. You know, that’s conveniently when Nicole Yokic is a free agent. So, like there’s there’s a lot of reasons why people are going to make noise about it. I don’t think it’s anything for Denver to worry about, but it would be nice to have him locked up sooner than later. That’s for sure. Yeah. I didn’t care at all. I mean, I I knew it was probably smarter for him to wait because it’s just get more money down the line. Yeah. Uh, Ryan, let’s talk about Peyton Watson because Pton Watson for me is an even more difficult conversation than Christian Brown because there’s a lot of stuff happening with contracts right now. So, you got Josh Giddy, for instance, who reportedly wants $30 million a year on his deal over a four-year period or five, and the Bulls are like, “Nah, I’m not doing that.” Yeah. And then you get Cam Thomas, who is a good player, only played 24 games last year, but he averaged 24 points per game last year. He’s a really good scoreer. He apparently reportedly had received an offer for about two years, 28 million with a team option on the last year. Team option on the second year. Yeah, it’s pretty that’s a pretty low deal. That’s basically the mid-level exception. Um I don’t think that Cam Thomas is worth that much more than that, but like there’s a lot of people that do. There’s there’s a lot of people that think he’s great, but it’s also just that is a very tough player type to pay fairly. And you’ve seen that with like Colin Ston got traded for Yousef Nerkach and like that was a crazy deal that Utah made. But guys like that, Jordan Clarkson, some of these scoring guards, they’re getting squeezed a little bit. It’s like I think people really care about the defensive guys right now. And then the other end of that also is that you have uh Jonathan Kaminga who, you know, for all metrics, I mean, Jonathan Kaminga is an extremely athletic player. I think he was taken seventh overall in the draft in 2021. Yeah, that’s the I believe that’s the number they took. Fron Vagner went one spot after him. Don’t bring that up. The Warriors fans, they are not super happy about it. Yeah. And that’s another person who again right now he might be signing the the restricted free agency might just have to sign for seven plus million dollars a year. Qualifying offer, right? Qualifying over, right? So, basic basically what that is for for those folks that don’t know, it’s a one-year deal that then allows you to become an unrestricted free agent the year after. And we haven’t seen somebody do that since Nerland Noel, right? I we we’ve seen that’s a good question. Remember Nerland had a four screw that like that he he was going to get a four-year like $80 million deal or something like that and then his his agent like clearly did not like give him the right advice. The advice that I would give to Kaminga is just to get out of Golden State and just to get away from that and and see if there’s another team that fits you better and and like he is not willing to sign the qualifying offer because there’s an an opportunity for him to get more money for this upcoming season. But in order to sign that deal, like the the Warriors, what are they offering? Like 24 million, like 22.5 million a year uh on a two-year deal, but it’s a team oper. They would also be like waving the no trade clause. And so really, it’s a one-year deal that gets him a pay bump and then it allows them to package him with whatever in order to make another trade for the future of their team and then they can send him to NBA Siberia if they want to. So like that’s not a great situation either. So, he needs to figure out like it’s tough. I I think that Payton honestly I think that Pton is a more like better fit than Jonathan Kaminga on a championship contender for a lot of reasons. Like Kaminga is more talented. He’s a better scorer. He’s he’s somebody that is a higher profile player, but Pton Watson is somebody that can really impact the defense and doesn’t need the ball in his hands in order to be a valuable player. So, I think that there’s value to both of those guys. Yeah. Uh, I mean, you know, we were talking about this offline a little bit. Uh, just trying to figure out like what are the archetypes of players that kind of fit, you know, what Payton’s role is. And, you know, I’ve already filtered it out. You know, I went and basically found again, you know, BBI is a it’s a great just gets to you opportunity for you to see kind of what players are uh like in terms of how they measure their overall numbers, just overall grades, all that stuff. And so when I did the filters, you know, Ryan, I was trying to figure out like what are some players that are like of a similar archetype as him that would offer like some value as a player and and contracts that they have. And the names that kind of came up that I talked about were Ryan Dunn, you got Male Bridges, but again much better offensive player. Jaden McDaniels, I think a much better overall player at this point. Dyson Daniels also a better player at this point. But Derek Jones Jr. is another one. Derek makes 11, I believe. And I actually think that right now, if you just told me and you kind of had to if I just had to guess where Peyton Watson is going to end up being, Brian, at this juncture, I would not be surprised if they do offer him a contract that it is going to be reflective of like your Isaac Auroros or your Derrick Jones Jr. Uh, Isaac Curl got a three-year 33. Derek Jones Jr. got a three-year 30 million a year deal. And I think he had a lot of volume for the uh value for the Clippers last year. Even in the playoffs, he did. Is that about where we are at this point with Pton Watson? It’s an interesting question because like for those guys, they were like maybe not Derrick Jones Jr. because he he had been in the league for a long time. He’d been on some minimums before he finally found a place that fit. uh for Okoro like he was a very highprofile. Yeah. I think fifth overall pick or so for Cleveland and they decided, okay, we’re gonna try to save face a little bit. We’re gonna give you a deal that’s about mid-level exception money at that time. I I think that that’s not that far off. It’s not that crazy. The name that I came up with was Dorian Finny Smith, who signed a 4-year 53 million deal. That’s more of a like a 13 13 and a half million for uh per like annually. And I think that that’s not that far like because I think of Pton Watson as this ideal like you want him to be the seventh man on your team. You want him to be the seventh man, eighth man. And he probably has some aspirations to be better than that. He he probably wants to like he does want to be a starter. We actually we know this. He wants to be a starter. He views himself as a star, but that may not be the role that like that’s not the role that Isaac Aoro is filling. It’s not the role that Derrick Jones Jr. is filling that that even Dorian Finey Smith is filling. So like can you get him on kind of like a a mid midline between both of those deals? Like four years 48. Like to me that sounds like a pretty reasonable contract for him. I think I’m I I’m a higher on him in terms of that contract value than you are. uh kind of splitting the difference between what he sees himself as and what the Nuggets currently have him as. On the other side, we’ll finish this conversation about Pton Watson and then we’re going to get into their new newly acquired Cameron Johnson and some things that are on the table for him. We’ll talk about all that more here at Lockdown Nuggets. Y’all, we are back here uh for the final segment of Lockdown Nuggets, wrapping up the conversation about Peyton Watson. But hey, Ron, I’ll say it like this. There’s a world where Peyton Watson for me still becomes an allNBA defender. And he uses his second contract as a chance to make real improvements. Canal, Ryan, he doesn’t have to worry about the money. He doesn’t have to worry about trying to get a contract. He knows that after this year, he’s guaranteed to make anywhere from 10 to 14 million a year for four years. And then you can grow through a system. You can work on your ball handling. You can work on your your offensive court mapping. you can work on your shooting and you can work on your defensive fundamentals. I mean, there’s a path, Brian, that by the time he gets to halfway through this contract, he’s worth 20 $25 million a year. But that’s completely up to him. And I think that if this if I was him, I would love to have this kind of security. And as the team gets older and it kind of ages and, you know, we’ll talk about Cameron Johnson here in a minute, you got a spot star for people. There’s going to be a lot of opportunity. And then you get to the point where you’re so good where your name is now having real cache around the NBA. Well, now you become one of the most valuable trade opportunities in the NBA and then you could be in a situation where you could have your own team at some point because that’s how far along you are. So for me, I think this would be a very ideal situation for Payton to try to get a deal as soon as possible to sign that deal if he feel comfortable with it, but use it as a transition point from where you are now, still kind of raw and underdeveloped in some ways to really using that extension to get your money to feel at home, to know you’re valued, but to to be able to really make improvements over the course of that extension. There’s a very real world where he is a extremely wealthy man by the end of that contract. Oh yeah. Like there’s there’s no doubt about it. There’s also some reasons for him if he wanted to to sign a short-term deal. Yeah. If he thought getting back out on the market sooner would be better. I happen to think that’s probably not a good idea for him because like with Denver kind of locking in their starting lineup for the course of the next couple years, I’m not sure what the opportunities are going to be for him in Denver specifically to really grow beyond that. Uh, one team that I would point to, everybody’s going to be doing it is the OKC Thunder. Uh, they obviously have a whole bunch of like they’ve locked in their main core guys, but among players that they locked in kind of on the edges, we talked about Alex Caruso. It’s kind of in that 20 million a year range over the course of the next four years. Uh Lou Dort in that 18 million a year range for these next two seasons. Isaiah Joe like 11 to 12 million for the next three seasons. Aaron Wiggins on a descending contract from 10 to 9 to 8 over the course of the next. Is that about where he is, do you think? Aaron Wiggins Joe. That’s a that’s a good range kind of where where you think about like what those guys did in the playoffs. It’s nothing crazy. Uh, but now that Denver has like Tim Hardaway Jr., Bruce Brown. Yeah. Are like is is Pton Watson going to play a massive role in the playoffs? Like is he going to play more than 15 minutes per game at any point? I don’t think so. So like for that amount of production, I think that that’s a fair contract in that 10 to 12 million per year range. So not really not really surprised in any way, shape, or form. We should of course move on beyond Payton, but like I do think that Denver there is benefit to trying to lock in deals and even try to get some descending deals to give yourself some financial flexibility if possible. So if you have to pay more upfront, yeah, pay less on the back end. Might give yourself some flexibility to make changes if you need. Oh, I would if I was them, I would try to do that with both of them. I mean, Christian Brown and Peyton Watson because like I said, you’re putting yourself in crazy crazy advantageous situation. Uh so Cam Johnson. Yeah. So Ron, can you give us some insight on Cam Johnson’s current contract, the extension, and do you know what his max extension that he’s eligible for would look like at this point? Yeah, so I not not entirely, but right now he’s on a very unique contract that is effectively very incentive laden. He signed a deal that was officially four years, 94.5 million, uh, but only had 90 million guaranteed. there were some incentives especially towards the back end of that deal. Currently, the the cash or the the cap hit that he’s getting for this particular season, it dips really low to 21 million. He goes back up to 23 next year. Uh but after that, he will be an unrestricted free agent. He’s been like it he’s because of the veteran extension, he’s has only two years left on his deal. is eligible for Denver if they wanted to to sign him to a three-year deal at this point. Uh they’ll have full bird rights, I believe. So, they could sign him to up to as as much of veteran extension, which is 140% of what that final year is. So, 23 million times 1.4, four. Uh you’re looking at close to like uh if they wanted to, I think they could get up to about 32 33 kind of in that general range if they wanted to per season. Now, I don’t think that they’re going to need to for for like a max extension. I think that that’s too much personally. Yeah. The name that I would compare him to is Herb Jones. um not necessarily from a skill set perspective, but they’re both small forwards. They’re both role-playing kind of small forwards that should be contributors to a championship team. One of them does it offensively, one of them does it defensively, but I had Herb Jones at 69 on my list for locked on uh NBA 100. Cam Johnson I had at 70. Uh Herb Jones, he got a contract of a contract extension just recently of three years 67 million. It’s about 22 23 million per year. I think that if Denver could get Cam Johnson for that, that would be fantastic. Like anything under 25 Denver should be trying to do immediately. So John Collins, uh Notre Dame, he’s making about $25 million a year. you know, this is uh he has a player option on this year and this is the last year of his deal. Uh you know, Otto Porter, I don’t know if you remember Otto Porter. I mean, you do, but Oh, yeah. You remember he signed a 5-year 125 with Washington. This is like 2015, right? I I kind of feel for Cam like for security purposes I would ask for four, but I would be if if if the Nuggets came to him and said four years, you know, for 100 million. I mean, honestly, I feel like that’s Well, so the the thing is is that he’s got two more years left on his deal. Yeah. You could only get up to three additional years, but like Yeah. If it was a threeyear $75 million extension of like 25 million a year, I don’t think anybody would bat an eye, would they? No. I mean then you would have but I think that’s the but you would agree that’s the CBA now right like now you have Murray making 52 Brown be making 23 basically at that point Cam making 25 Aaron making 30 then Jokic making 110 basically. So yeah whatever he wants at that point. So it be it would be 73 million for Joic annual if on the new deal. Yeah. I mean then you got you know off the bench you’re bringing Payton Watson there who’s making 11 to 12. Yeah. Yeah, I mean that’s a real that’s a structure. Like that’s an actual like healthy structure underneath this cap. And just for context too, like right now 17.19% of the cap this year is 26.5 million. So like you could actually make this work from a cap standpoint. Uh undoubtedly. And now Denver’s going to need to be willing to pay the second apron at some point if they if they want. But like like cuz these this Christian Brown contract is going to kick in. Uh if you want to actually have depth on your team, then you’re going to need to be willing to pay for set depth. But like I do think that there is viability and justification to getting these deals done sooner rather than later. And if you can have that kind of locked in, you don’t like because what’s Denver gonna do with that cap space? they would either need to clear out everything and change their team entirely or like why don’t you just lock everybody in and then have the maximum flexibility for trades and free agency going forward. I think that that’s be that’s the most likely scenario for me that works out and hopefully Cam like he may he may decide that he wants to give it a year before and like see how it works, see how Denver uses him before actually locking in. But like this to me feels like a match made in heaven for both him and Christian Brown. So you you might as well lock in those deals and try to play next to Joic. And like that’ll just help the career. I agree. Y’all let us know what you think in the comments section. What do you think CB’s deal should look like? Pton Watson, Cameron Johnson. Would you wait on any of those players? Would you wait on Cam Johnson with two years remaining? How do you feel like the Denver Nuggets should really dive into their books to make sure they’re locking up this core for potentially multiple NBA championship runs? That’s Ryan. This is Swiper. This is Locked on Nuggets. See you on the other side.
Swipa and Ryan break down the four extension eligible players this offseason: Nikola Jokic, Christian Braun, Peyton Watson, and Cam Johnson. They discuss what fair contracts would be, how to fit in every player, and when other players could receive extensions in the future.

Jokic doesn’t want to play anymore
Pwat has not shown enough to warrant an extension.
Give CB good money. He deserves it.
CB should get a fair contract now, CB should also realize his career will be better if he stays next to his big buddy🃏and remains a Nugget!
PSwat needs to show some offensive game as well as close to the rim finishing…
Can’t wait to see Cam Johnson fit into his role…. if he stays healthy the Nuggets should extend him mid year…
the dream duo is back!! (they are never wrong btw)
No Ext this off season if they're smart the players that is
But I would love to lock pwat and CB in for 3 or 4 for 30 mil total
I’ll just say it,Watson, great dude… but he’s been horrible every playoffs, has been played out of necessity rather than net production (thin bench). Watson could turn into a Zeke if we aren’t careful. I’d rather just have the cap space available for future offseason vet-min signings, i.e., the Bruce Browns and THJs of the world.
Anything more than 5mil/year for Watson, is a big no no.
CB $16 mil MAX
People in the comments really haven’t been keeping up with inflation, these guys aren’t resigning for the low ball offers y’all are throwing out
He doesn't have the spacing required to get over 20mil
Let sign Christian Braun , forget Peyton Watson , he is sucks
i see Swipa. I press dislike i don't watch the video
