Could the Cleveland Cavaliers Bring Kevin Love BACK?! | How Should the 14th Roster Spot Be Used?!
On today’s show, as we mentioned yesterday, the Cavs have 13 guys on the roster. Who should be number 14? What should that spot look like for the Cavs? We’ll talk about all that and so much more on today’s edition of Locked on Cavs. You are Locked On Cavs, your daily Cleveland Cavaliers podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. And today’s episode brought to you by Monarch Money. Take control of your finances with Monarch Money. Use code locked on NBA. That is LK DNBA at monarchmoney.com for 50% off your first year. here. The Clinton Cavaliers, as we mentioned yesterday, have 13 guys on standard contracts. As of right now, they will before training camp gets here. They will sign at least one more player. I can promise you that because NBA rules say that you do have to have 14 guys on standard contracts. You can have 13 guys for, I believe it is up to six weeks during the season, but for no more than two weeks at a time. It might be four weeks. Not entirely sure of that rule, but the Cavaliers will have to sign somebody else. So, what should that final roster spot? Because of course, they can’t have 15, but if you look into the history, the way Kobe Alman and this front office have built the roster for the Cavaliers, they like to maintain that flexibility at the end of the roster where they could make a trade where they send one person away and get two players back. And if you have 15 players in the roster, that becomes a very difficult thing to do. And also there are of course luxury tax ramifications that do come into play when you have a 15th guy with when you are as expensive as the Cavs currently are. So when we talk about the 14th roster spot for all intents and purposes we are talking about the final roster spot that the Cleveland Cavaliers have available. And there are a couple of different directions that the Cavs could go and we will get to a number of different names that I think the Cavs should have interest in. And I’ve not heard anything specific about what their plans are as far as this go as of right now, but do have of course takes on to on what things could potentially look like. And I do think as we look at this roster spot, I think it should be sort of a mix of a guy that can play, but you’re also not expecting to play 82 games. You’re not expecting whoever is left. And you know, as I mentioned, we’ll go through some of the names, but none of these names that are among the best available free agents for the Cavs are guys that the Cavaliers look at and say, “Yeah, that guy should be in our postseason rotation.” The Cavaliers are who the Cavaliers are going to be. Whomever they sign with this final roster spot, again, final roster spot. whoever they sign there is not going to, at least the way I see it, is not going to change what this season is for the Cavs. Now, that doesn’t mean this roster spot is worthless, but the Cavs are either going to win the title or they’re not going to win the title this year. And I don’t think whoever they sign to their final roster spot is somebody that’s going to really impact whether or not they win or don’t win, right? Like if they let’s just say because we will talk about him. Let’s just say Kevin Love secures a buyout from the Utah Jazz and he wants to to play his final season potentially. I don’t know, but wants to play his final season in Cleveland where he spent most of his career and one day we’ll have his number retired and you know that is the the jersey that everyone’s going to think of Kevin Love in. Let’s say that’s the case. the Cavaliers would not be expecting Kevin Love to play postseason minutes, like legitimate real postseason rotational minutes. So, I do think as you look at that being the truth, I think leadership also matters in this discussion. I and I I look at the Cavs roster and I am somebody who I very much believe in development and I think that even when you’re a great team the way the Cavs look like they should be a great team this year, you still have to have developmental pieces. You still have to be a team that is actively developing players. I think one of the biggest myths about the NBA is that only young bad teams are teams that development is a focus for. I think every team in the NBA development to some, you know, to different teams are at different levels. Like development right now for the Washington Wizards looks different than development for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Development right now for the Portland Trailblazers looks different than it does the Cleveland Cavaliers. And those are three teams that are in three very different spots as far as their team building cycle goes. But the Cavs do have guys on their roster like Jaylen Tyson, like Tyrese Proctor, like I would imagine at some point, we will talk about him coming up in a few minutes too. Naqucoin Tomlin potentially being on a full contract with the Cavaliers. Those guys are all developmental guys and you do hope that at some point those players can turn into rotation players. Maybe this year it is Jaylen Tyson. Maybe next year it’s Tyrese’s Proctor. Maybe next year it’s Naquin Tomlin, too. I don’t know what the future’s going to hold for those guys, but the development of those guys does matter. That is something that we do have to look at and say, yes, development matters. Even when you’re a team that should win 60 games again this year, that doesn’t mean that you you cannot it doesn’t mean that you can go through a season and not care about young guys getting better. It’s just obviously not the primary focus of the organization. But the Cavs having I we’ll call it two and a half roster spots right now allocated to that and maybe Luke Travers um shows enough to where he is certainly part of that conversation too. I’ve not seen enough from Luke to say that as of right now. Um and Craig Porter Jr. probably qualifies here as well as another guy that is in that in that category. So let’s say that you’ve got three and a half roster spots tied up for that. Well, that 14th roster spot, I think veteran leadership probably does matter a little bit. I do think that with every year that passes with this team, that veteran leadership matters a little bit less and less. Like I think two years ago when Tristan Thompson was back for the first time after, you know, spending some time in Boston and Chicago and Sacramento and Indiana, I think that the veteran leadership he brought at that point mattered much more than it did last year. It mattered much more than this upcoming season because you look at how old somebody like Darius Garland and Evan Mobley and even Donovan Mitchell were at that point. It’s not to say those guys weren’t leaders, but I think that they’ve grown as leaders since then. And Tristan Thompson’s leadership certainly mattered two years ago. Even when he wasn’t around the team because of a suspension, you could feel, I think, that one, he was actually a solid piece for the Cavs. uh two years back. But I also think that you can look at this and say, “Okay, well, the the veteran leadership that he provides maybe doesn’t show up in the box score, but I do think it mattered in that locker room. I think it mattered in that locker room last year, although probably not quite as much as it did the year before.” So, I look at this and say, “Okay, well, Donovan Mitchell is certainly the leader of this team. Evan Mobley is another year older um and now has the the onc court accomplishments being an all-NBA player, being defensive player of the year, um really rising near a superstar level type of player. He has, I think, a little bit more leadership responsibility now than he has before. Now, we will see how he takes that on, but I think that is something that matters more now than it did a couple of years ago. Darius Garland, I think, has grown as a leader in the last two years. So, I don’t know that the leadership stuff matters quite as much as it did a few years ago when the Cavs were decidedly a younger team than they are right now, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t matter at all because I do still think that having that veteran leader is something that can be a good thing. I just don’t know that it is as impactful as it once was. Now, I also do think that having somebody with this roster spot that can play at least a little bit, right? Like Tristan Thompson I think can play a little bit, but if he’s in there in a playoff game, things have probably either gone really great or really poorly for the Cavaliers. Kevin Love probably in that same area, although he has a shooting ability that Tristan Thompson obviously doesn’t have. But I think that you want to find a a happy medium between leadership and a guy that can really be that break glass in case of emergency type of option to where if you need 12 minutes on any given night, this guy can step in and do that. And then the other discussion that I think matters is where do things go positionally with this spot, right? Is it the Cavs have had a backup big that has filled that role in Tristan Thompson for the last couple of years and before that it was Robin Lopez. um really and and now and that was a little bit different because those guys essentially were the third big for the Cavs and now they have Larry Nanch Jr. in that role who is certainly a better basketball player than any of the names that I’m going to get to in the second segment that could potentially fill this role for the Cavs. So, the Cavs roster is constructed a little bit differently. And I do think that they have fewer fewer holes in the roster right now because they have so many guys that are two-way players in a way that they haven’t had before. They’ve had guys that are primarily offensive players like Ty Jerome, primarily defensive players like Isaac Aoro. And I do think that makes the the deeper end of the roster matter just a little bit more because I think that you’re a little bit more limited in terms of roster flexibility. I think those limits have really been pushed with the way that Kobe Alman and his front office maneuvered this summer. So, I do think that is something that factors into this. And the thing that I keep coming back to is Darius Garland’s toe injury. And Darius, of course, had that surgery roughly 5 weeks after the Cavs were eliminated by the Indiana Pacers, or it might have been four weeks, but somewhere in that month plus timeline after the Cavs were eliminated is when Darius Garland had that surgery. And the timeline the team gave was four to five months he would be out. Well, four months takes you into training camp. Five months took you three weeks into the regular season. So, that tells me Darius Garland not going to be there at the start of the season. I don’t know if he will or not. I don’t know how his recovery is going. I’ve not talked to Darius, but I do know that when you have that type of timeline and the goals and expectations that the Cavs have, airing on the side of caution with him probably is the right move for the Cavs. I’m not saying that he there’s no chance he should be out there opening day, but I do think that as you look at what the Cavs want to accomplish, it is much more important for him to be healthy in April, May, and June than it is for him to be at his best in October, November, and December. So, I do think that is something that you have to factor in here. I think Lonzo Ball’s um previous injury history is something that you have to factor in. He is somebody that is not going to play 82 games this year. I can assure you of that. Lonzo Ball will sit out games. The C he should not be playing both ends of a backto-back. If the Cavs have three games in four nights, he should not be playing all of those. I also do think it’s the possibility to get guys like Tyrese Proctor and Craig Porter Jr. a little bit of run where they can, you know, we can get back to that development on certain nights when Lonzo Ball does not play. But all of this to say, I think that targeting a guard could make some sense for the Cavs with that 14th roster spot. Somebody that can play a little bit, somebody that is, you know, that understands the role, I think is a really important thing that you do have to you do have to factor in when you are talking about the 14th roster spot. Somebody that shouldn’t expect to play a ton, but does know what is expected of them. Now, who are some of these names that could fill into this spot? We’re going to talk about that next right here on Locked on Cavs. Today’s show brought to you by 5Hour Energy. It’s time to fuel up and turn it up with the 5-hour energy transfusion. Brings the bold grape, ginger, and lime flavor of your favorite golf drink minus the alcohol into a quick energizing shot. Whether you’re sinking birdies like I aim to later this week when I play or just making memories with friends. This one’s a hole-in-one. I really want one of those. Um, for your energy game, let’s be honest, some days on the course or even off the course, you really need that extra boost to stay sharp and energized. I played golf on Sunday and I had a wedding Saturday night, a family wedding, and that means I was up relatively late, maybe wasn’t feeling my best on Sunday, and I get on the golf course, and my first T-shots fine. You know, I I end up making a bogey on the first hole. I had to punch out. It’s a par five. Just didn’t go the way in my head or didn’t go the way in real life that it went in my head. So, I’m like, “Okay, maybe it’s not going to be the best day.” And then I get to like the third hole and my body is just fried. I am absolutely exhausted. The thing that I needed more than anything in that moment was a five-hour energy. I didn’t have one, but if I did, I feel like I would have played a lot better than I did because golf all about good times with good people. Was not having a great time on Sunday. Would have had a much better time with five hour energy. Plus, the good flavors that they provide. There are a number of I don’t want to say big names because that would be misleading, but there are a number of recognizable names that are available on the free agent market still as of Tuesday, August 5th at 10:45 in the morning as I record this. And I already mentioned two of them and Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson. So, let’s talk about them for a second. And Kevin Love is currently actually not on the free agent market. He is a member of the Utah Jazz. Um, as I mentioned, as soon as that trade went down, that ultimately saw Norm Powell trade to the Miami Heat. Um, I said I could not picture I closed my eyes and said, “Can’t see Kevin Love playing for the Utah Jets.” And I still feel that way. And Mark Stein reported earlier this week, I believe it was on Sunday, reported that Kevin Love is actively searching for ways out of Utah um on a buyout. And if that is the case, I think that Kevin Love in Cleveland does make some sense. As I mentioned in the first segment, Kevin played the majority of his career in Cleveland. His number is going to be in the rafters at Rocket Arena at some point. Um, I believe Kevin Love is going to be a Hall of Famer. And when people think of Kevin Love, they’re going to envision him in a Cavs uniform. They’re not going to envision him with the Wolves, even though his best statistical seasons were when he was in Minnesota. They’re not going to envision him with the Miami Heat. They’re going to envision him wearing a Cleveland Cavaliers uniform. And I do think that Kevin brings some veteran leadership. He also does bring shooting obviously, which is something that no team can ever have enough of. So I do look at it and say if the Cavs want to go with a veteran big man, Kevin Love might be the answer here. He I do think would be the answer over Tristan Thompson. Now, Tristan provides things that Kevin doesn’t. And Tristan, of course, has been part of this locker room, but Kevin Love has also played with a number of different guys in this locker room, too. It’s not as if he has been somebody that doesn’t know everybody. I mean, he has played with Jared Allen. He’s played with Evan Mobley, Darius Garland, Donovan Mitchell. Um, he was on the team with Max Strus. Like, he has played he has played for a lot of he he’s played for he’s played with a lot of these guys now. you know, DeAndre Hunter, no, but Sam Merrill, yes. Like, there’s a lot of players in this locker room that Kevin Love has relationships with, that he’s played with. So, I do think that makes for a potential easy fit. Tristan Thompson, I don’t know how much left he has in the tank. He did at exit interviews this year sound like somebody that does want to keep playing basketball. I don’t know right now if there is mutual interest between him and the Cavs. Um, I don’t know one way or another if there is or is not, but I do think that if he wants to come back and the Cavs are open to having him back, then Tristan Thompson will probably be the 14th guy. I just don’t know where that stands. Now, I did say that the guard spot is the one that I would target if I were Kobe Alman. And the guy that’s available that I would look at as a potential ad for that 14th roster spot is Malcolm Brogden. Now, Brogden does not come without his own risks as he is somebody that has a pretty extensive injury history himself, right? He has not been the the epitome of a clean bill of health throughout his career, but he is even at his age where right now he’s 32 years old and he’s played nine years in the league after I believe he he was a four-year guy at Virginia when he was in college before he won rookie of the year with the Milwaukee Bucks. But he’s somebody that one can shoot the basketball. I know he didn’t have a great shooting year last year in just 24 games, but he’s a career 39% three-point shooter. He knows how to operate in offense. He can, I think, be a veteran presence that steps up when Darius Garland might be out, when Donovan Mitchell needs a couple of days off because he’s not going to play just like Darius Garland and Lonzo Ball. None of none of the guards that the Cavs have are going to play 82 games this year. I promise you none of them are. And Malcolm Brogden I think is the one that you can look at and say this guy can come in, he can play on, you know, a random night, could play 25 minutes and perform relatively well. He’s not going to play at an all-star level certainly, but he can come in and he can play relatively well, but there are also going to be nights where, you know, he’s going to catch a DNPCD because the Cavs rotation is full. And that’s not necessarily something that the Cavs have in mind with this roster spot and they shouldn’t have in mind. 33 year old guard, which he will be this season, could be somebody that serves as, you know, kind of a good mentor to somebody like a Tyrese Proctor, to somebody like a Jaylen Tyson. as those guys go through the developmental stage of their career and are fighting for rotation minutes and are trying to find their footing in the NBA. Somebody that has been there and done that and won at a relatively high level. It’s not as if he’s an NBA champion, but he’s been on some really good Milwaukee teams. He’s on a couple of solid Indiana teams. That Boston team, I believe, was pretty good back in 2022, 2023 when he played 67 games. So, I do look at this and say, well, Malcolm Brogden kind of knows what it takes. And yes, there are the injury issues there. He’s not been somebody with a clean bill of health. He has only played more than 65 games, I believe, twice in his career. Once was his rookie year, once was that year in Boston. But the Cavs aren’t asking him to be a high volume player. They would be asking him to be a really low volume player and bring a leadership role. I don’t know if that’s what he’s looking for, but when you’re still on the free agent market, August 5th, August 6th, you know, at this time of year, I don’t know what other options you have. So, I don’t know what life’s going to look like there, but I do look at that type of player and think that could be somebody that makes a lot of sense for the Cavs. Now, some other free agent names available. Chris Buché, um, he’s fine. I don’t know if that’s what the Cavs should be looking for. Al Horford still is a free agent, but all indications are he is going to go to the Golden State Warriors once they have the Jonathan Kaminga situation figured out. Um, but I would like if Al Horford wanted to come to Cleveland on the minimum, that would be the absolute perfect pickup, but I don’t see that being the case. Uh, Precious Aua is another one that maybe could make some sense. He’s certainly on the younger side, not providing that veteran leadership, but as a big that could potentially play, only going to be 26 years old. Like maybe Precious Sichua makes some sense. Russell Westbrook is available. I think that would not be a great idea for the Cavs. DeAndre Jordan is available. I would imagine that if he wants to go back to Denver, he will be able to go back to Denver. Seth Curry, another one that I’m just not sure makes any sense. Patty Mills, somebody that maybe could provide a bit a bit of veteran leadership, but he’s going to be 37. I don’t think he can play anymore. Dylon Wright, maybe Camp Payne’s a free agent still. I just as you keep going down this list, it’s pretty clear that a lot of these guys are free agents still because, well, they just they don’t have anything left. And that’s why I think that the pool that the Cavs should be looking at should be relatively small. And if they can’t find somebody, and I know I talked about this in the first segment, but if they can’t find somebody that really does fit the bill as a veteran leader, maybe going with the developmental route is something that does make sense. Maybe it does. Um, I’m not there right now, but maybe it is something that makes sense for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Well, if they do go the developmental route, who should they be targeting? And could Naquin Tomlin factor in? We’ll talk about that next right here on Locked on Calves. Today’s show is brought to you by Monarch Money. Do you ever wish that managing your money felt easier? And if you’re watching the show on YouTube, hit that thumbs up button for us, too. But if the Cavs want to go with a developmental roster spot for that 14th and final, again, final roster spot, I do think Naquin Tomlin makes some sense. I think that he has shown a decent deal of skill in summer league. I think that he has proven that he can score at least at the G-League level. He can score at the summer league level. Can he be a bucket getter in the NBA? I don’t know. But I do think that he is somebody, especially given how raw of a talent he is, I do think he’s somebody that could be worth investing into. Now, my my take on Aquin Tomlin is I think a year from now, we will be having a conversation about whether or not he can play real rotation minutes for the Cleveland Cavaliers. I don’t know if he will be able to. I don’t know if he won’t be able to. I don’t know what the future looks like for him, but I do think he is a a lottery ticket that is worth buying. And if the Cavs feel that way, maybe they can’t find that veteran leader at that point. I do think it might make some sense. And I guess the tricky thing here is you kind of don’t want to put Naquin Tomlin for like financial reasons. you kind of don’t want to put him on a a standard contract before you have to because he does have the 50 games that he can play as a member or be active for while he’s on a two-way deal this year because the Cavs did sign him to a two-year two-way deal last year, but I do think at some point this year Naquin will be on a standard NBA contract. Now, we did see last year the Cavs add Chuma Okeki to a standard contract very late in the season. He was the 15th guy after they signed Javvante Green, who was on a buyout from the New Orleans Pelicans. I do think that that could be the case, but if they don’t find somebody they like for that 14th roster spot, maybe Naquin Tomlin makes a little bit more sense sooner than later on the actual roster for the Cleveland Cavaliers. I’ve got a fun crossover episode planned for tomorrow’s show. Uh Tyler Wjack of Locked on Irish is going to join the show. We are going to talk he’s a uh now I know not all of you Notre Dame fans certainly I think a large part of you are Ohio State fans but Tyler is actually a big fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers. So we’re going to talk his you know favorite things about the team. On this episode of Locked On Cavs, Danny Cunningham (The Inside Shot, Cleveland Magazine, 92.3 The Fan) examines the Cavaliers’ 14th roster spot and potential free agent signings. He discusses the balance between veteran leadership and player development, analyzing options like Kevin Love, Tristan Thompson, and Malcolm Brogdon. Cunningham explores the impact of Darius Garland’s injury on roster decisions and considers developmental prospects such as Nae’Qwan Tomlin. The podcast provides insights into the Cavs’ roster construction strategy, luxury tax implications, and the team’s evolving needs as young stars like Garland and Evan Mobley mature. Cunningham also touches on the potential absence of Garland at the start of the season and how it might influence the team’s approach to filling their final roster position.

I’m not so sure about the Kevin Love situation, although he was a big part of the Cavaliers reaching the NBA Finals four years in a row from 2015 to 2018.
Once again, Chris Boucher is a center, so the Cavaliers should sign him to be a backup center, or they should sign Nae’Quan Tomlin as a backup power forward. Stay away from Russell Westbrook.
Talking about a Kevin Love buyout from Utah. Nothing against Kevin but I'd rather bring back Georges Niang if Utah buys him out. At least we know that Niang can contribute if we need him to. Donovan would probably be happy if Niang comes back since they are buds. Just bring back Tristan as a deep bench backup center and Niang to round out the bench and if Tomlin earns a roster spot later in the year, then make whatever move you have to make to open up a spot for him. Or just let Tomlin stay on the two way deal all year and then sign him to a multiyear contract when Dean Wade leaves in free agency next summer.
The Cavs shouldn’t be trying to have Garland ready by the start of the season! They have enough guards on the roster to be able to concentrate on adding more depth in the front court, particularly in the area of the center position. In fact, I would say the Cavs need a “beefy” player in the middle. Especially if he can shoot a little from the outside. 🏀 Tomlinson is my suggestion!
