Chasing Stats: Tre Johnson provides huge boost for Wizards’ three-point shooting
Trey Johnson was known for his three-point shooting in college, and after diving into the numbers, I believe that’s going to translate quickly to the NBA. Certainly, the Wizards could use some help in that area. Last season, they were 29th in the NBA in three-point percentage and 17th in threes made. They’ve not been top 10 in either category since the 201920 season. All in an era where three-point shooting is king. Trey Johnson, though, should give them a major boost. Here’s a breakdown of his three-point shooting last year at Texas. As you see, he was good across the board, right? But the two numbers that stand out most to me are first of all what he did from NBA range because that suggests there’s going to be less of an adjustment for him to the distance of the NBA three-point line than there is for most rookies. And second is transition three-point shooting cuz that fits in really well with how the Wizards like to play. Last season, Washington was fourth in the NBA in pace, which is measured by possessions per game. They ran the 10th most transition plays, but they were also near the bottom of the league in efficiency in transition. If Trey Johnson can infuse their offense with accurate three-point shooting on the break, that could not only improve those numbers, but also open up lanes for others on the team to score in space. We saw a glimpse of that when Trey averaged the second most points in Wizards summer league history, second only to John Wall. And it was yet another good sign that he can hit the ground running as a rookie.
