one has been about the impact of the back court and that’s where it all starts. When you have a confident and competent back court, it just opens up a lot of things for you offensively. Now a look at Philadelphia’s starting lineup. We’ve got Kelly Ubé. He’s out there with Paul George. Embiid is out there with Maxi. And it’s McCain in at the two guard spot from deep. George capable of guarding any position. LeBron is also skilled at just testing shot. Here’s Donic and he gets that one to go off the front iron. Just reliable guys. He’s just always trying to make the right play. George looking around, shoots over James, and it’s George missing and not allowing the shooter even an inch of breathing room on that one. And guys, that’s exactly the kind of high impact defense they want to see out of him. Now here’s Aton back to LeBron. Floats one. The shot no good. Excellent D there from George. Front pass the arc. Sinks the triple. I think one of Paul George’s best shots is his pullup jump shot. He’s been destroying defenses for years with that mid-range pullup. Now here’s Donic. to the paint. Here’s Hatchima. UB pulls it in. And and typically he has the touch to finish when he’s in tight, but not sure on that possession. Pass to Maxi Embiid. The screen fires for three. The rebound by the Lakers. A moment now to hear from our sideline reporter, Hall of Famer David Aldridge. David. Well, guys, I briefly spoke with the Lakers head coach. When I asked him how hard it is to game plan for Paul George, he just chuckled. He said he’s one of the hardest guys in the league to guard. I really challenged our team to make sure we’re communicating whenever he has the ball. And it will be, as always, a team first approach to slowing down PG-13. Back to you guys. Okay, David. banks. Yeah, you know, LeBron plays a very mistakefree game usually in the open court and when he’s out on the break, the points are almost a guarantee. And Clark for the Lakers. Their last two seasons ended in playoff losses to the Denver Nuggets. And I tell you what, they fought hard both times, Kevin. The point differential was only 24 points over the four games in 2023. and just 11 points in 2024. LA actually led most of the five game series but weren’t able to advance. Clark, we know what a great player Joel Embiid is. He was the 2023 MVP and he was on that same road until he got injured last season. Unfortunate to see the big fella MB deal with the injuries that he has throughout his career. even going back to his one year in college. Uh it’s unfortunate but that has hampered what is a special special talent in MB. The first free throw is good and Nick Nurse Greg the 26th head coach in 76ers franchise history and Kevin known for his creativity and that outside the box thinking I think it’s a good fit with this forwardinking front office. Both shots good from the strike. And Joel Embiid is a giant center. Clark, his size, his arms spin. How does his sheer size do you think affect the game? Well, he’s a mountain of a man. Not only is he tall, he’s wide, and he’s deep, too, Kevin. In other words, he’s hard to get around. And he’s also hard to challenge because he’s north and south. So, and you factor in his touch, this guy does things that I’ve not really seen a guy of his size do. Particularly when you talk about pity patting the dribble and knocking down face up jumpers all the way out to the three-point line. It should almost be unlawful for a guy north of three Bills to be doing that. Donich against Maxi. Here’s George. Some solid defense from Eightton. That’s the kind of D you need when he’s got the ball near the hoop. They were all over. Eighton sets the pick for Reeves offline with his three. And the great shooters know when they’ve got enough opening to go for the three. I didn’t think it was a bad choice on that possession. Now here’s Maxi. got a piece of it and stolen by Eaton. Three on three. The steel. Here’s McCain. The shots good on the assist by George. Attacking in transition. The most consistent way to generate easy looks. Yep. Exactly. And if there’s any opportunity for early offense, you’ve got to push it and push it every time. Now, here’s LeBron. to the inside, pulls up and oh boy, a lot of contact there, but he gets the call and will shoot too. That one on Embiid and Clark. It’s hard to compare Luca Donuch to any other player we’ve seen before. I would certainly agree with that. Dittos to that, Kevin, because he is unique. His pace is never hurry. He never gets rattled. He complains to officials a little bit more than I’d like to see, but he’s strong. He’s got great touch and feel and he scores at all three levels and he’s a brilliant passer. And the first one at the line is good. Luca Donic is a do-it-all player. I mean, he does everything for this team, including being a walking triple double threat on a game by-game basis. He’s perfect from the line this time. One thing about the Lakers, Clark, over the last couple seasons, they get themselves to the free throw line. Yeah. And a lot of that is due to the fact they’ve got some real creators in their lineup. Guys who can attack off the dribble at multiple positions from multiple angles. And that creates pressure for the defense. And we will have a timeout called by Nick Nurse. He wants to regroup and go over the strategy. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Well, in attendance here tonight in Los Geles, we’ve got rapper Sway Lee. Yeah, Kevin. And of course, Sway Lee big on hoops in general. He’s big on streaming 2K and loves to play pickup ball. That’s good on the assist by George. Pick and roll comes fairly easily to Embiid. Taking what the defense gives him. He’s a pretty intelligent baller. The three for Dunic. And that one’s good. George and they don’t want to get in a habit of giving him open looks from three. First quarter still, but not who you want to leave open. Now here’s Donic. We don’t have the luxury of being that team. Working it into the paint. That’s what we’re really good at, Kevin. They play to their strengths.” They got a lot of strength. Got to do it. You know, Clark, the days of trust the process are long gone. The Sixers are now focused on the now. as well they should be. Kevin um with a superstar big guy in his prime and Joel Embiid um there’s no time like the present and it’s not going to last forever so they need to capitalize both the 76ers trail by three now Maxie he’s got Six. Plenty of space, but he just, let’s face it, he whiffs on that one for Watford. That’s good. And they’ve repeatedly probed inside in the first half, guys. And the Lakers lead by four. Pick works well there. Not much resistance from the D. Yeah, that’s not the defense you need. You got to be tougher defensively. down low. He’s defended by Reed. Basket good. That is super efficient getting in deep and then taking advantage. Los Angeles has gone four of seven from three-point range so far in the first. Vincent, the pass to Reeds. teardrop shot and it’s Philadelphia with the rebound outside Maxi and the basket is good and he’s got a chance here for one more at the line. Maxi makes things happen with his hard work and determination as a scorer. This team has handed a lot of responsibility to Tyrese Maxi, but Greg, he’s lived up to it and has grown very well into his role with the team. Shown that he can be a scorer all over the floor. Amazing to think how far he’s come in such a short amount of time. And that one falls. That puts him up by one point. And Clark, we know the last handful of years, the 76ers have been a threat in the East. Seven straight years of playoff runs can’t get past that second round barrier though, Kevin. But as far as success, they’ve been as consistent as it comes in the East the last decade. And so it’s Maxi who brings up the ball for the Philadelphia 76ers. Gordon deciding where to go with it. A three ball. It’s not going to go for him. Tyrese Maxi. He’s been the guy making things happen for the 76ers. He finishes with nine points in the quarter. And looking at what we’ve seen from the 76ers, what do you guys think? Well, in that first quarter, they were intent on just pounding the ball down low. Yeah, and it’s worked. They’ve got a clear edge and points in the paint. Now we’ll see if they go with a more balanced attack or just keep on pounding it inside. The Lakers trail. We’ve got Jared Vanderbilt. They’ve looked to fire as much as possible from outside the ark, and so far they are hitting at a high clip. You know, something else they’ve done really, really well, and I know the analytics don’t support it, but they’ve made the most out of their mid-range jumper opportunities. That one is off. Well, I’d love to find out, but he’s got a combination of remarkable DNA and obviously a tremendous work ethic and attention to detail and taking care of his body, but some of it is it’s a blend of um good fortune and a lot of hard work. But he’s played at a level of his age that I never thought I’d see in basketball. It’s different in other sports, but to do what he’s doing on the court is amazing. Wow. Wow. He got whacked on that one which shouldn’t be much debate there. Blatant contact, straightforward call, simple Philadelphia shooting their fourth and fifth attempts at the free throw line tonight. And one of the highlights last year for this group was the fact that they were so efficient from the charity strike. That’s a huge factor. You know, success at the line just became contagious for him. A few guys got on the roll and it carried over to the rest of the team. Lukadanchic. He’s checked in for Gabe Vincent. Missile blows. Basket is good. So a chance here for a three-point play. That’s where Maxi’s at his best. He wants to get the ball inside. We’ve seen Tyrese Maxi and his game go to another level. Clark, what makes him a top level scorer in your opinion, Kevin? There are a couple of things that really stand out. His sheer speed with the ball is remarkable. His fearlessness and confidence. Every great scorer has that. And then his ability to knock down the three-point shot off the catch or off the dribble gives him an added step of quickness when he’s taking it to the rack. And all of that makes him a dynamic score. Not only is Maxi solid and efficient from the line, but he gets there quite a bit, too. Himura again through break. Donic no good. Philadelphia’s gone three of five beyond the arc since the start of the second quarter. McCain’s shot is off. The Lakers shooting and feeling it offensively in the second quarter. They’re shooting 60%. 76ers shooting at 51%. Really solid. And slam dunk by Maxi. Strong take by the wy maxi. He is fantastic at turning on the jets and Vanderbilt now top of the key. You have to love these kinds of games scoring wise, keeping everybody on their toes. Here’s Maxi outside for George. Here’s McCain. He has seven off target with the open look. It’s 9 seconds separating the shot clock in game the pass to Vanderville and he finishes nicely on the way and now a three-point Laker lead. That’s a nice play there. If you can’t block, force them to the line. Yeah, exactly. Prevent the layup. Give them a little bump and then maybe they’ll think twice about coming into the lane next time. And if he can keep shooting from deep like he did in the first half, he’s going to be more than a handful. Yeah, you know what? The defense is going to adjust. They’ll be ready for him now. The 76ers trail by three. You know, it’s inevitable that a player’s physical abilities diminish over the course of a career. But the thing that stands out to me about LeBron James is that he never lost his insatiable drive to win. Guys, if anything, he’s gotten stronger. Good on the shot. George has got five points now. The score George takes the contact, but good body control there allows him to finish. Machimura with a screen on Embiid. No one near Donic as he lets it fly. Gets the three-pointer to fall. Donic has got 28 points for the game. Now here’s Maxi. 16 points for him. The rebound by James. Well, they’ll be happy with that look even though it didn’t fall. You know what? That’s a confidence shaker for him though. I mean, that’s a shot he expects to make every time. And he can take over in a nancond. I mean, once he catches fire, it’s difficult to squelch it outside. George misses the three. Lakers lead by six. To the middle. An absolute beast inside. Love how Aiden uses his size to draw these fouls. And let’s get your J guys on the scoring breakdown for the Lakers. Well, you know, throughout this game, they’ve shot the ball extremely well from downtown. Their shooters are getting open and letting it fly. And they’ve really been able to get out in transition and produce. The defense hasn’t had an answer for this uptempo pace. And the first one at the line is good. And you just have to be enticed by the skill set of Aiden, a 7 foot one behemoth who plays with a lot of physicality and skill on both ends. Eighton hits them both. Well, he’s certainly been on target with the free throws. Such an advantage when your bigs can knock them down from the line. Pass to McCain. Now UB looking to end the run. Hits the three-point bomb. UB’s got eight points. Pick works well there. Not much resistance from the D. Yeah, that’s not the defense you need. You got to be tougher defensively.
