More Moves Coming… Multiple Celtics Trade Scenarios REVEALED
The main goal for the Boston Celtics off season has been explained as Brad Stevens is still cheving up these moves left and right late into the off season and speculation still will arise on one particular player on if he will still see himself in Green October comes playing for Joe Missoula’s team. So, we’re going to be diving in and exploring what this possibility could be and how it could be disrupted by the Boston Celtics as they look to get to their main goal this off season. We’ll be diving into all that and more on this latest episode of Celtics Digest. I’m your host Bruce with my co-host Patrick Billings. And Patrick, a great day to talk about some basketball. It’s been dry here for the Celtics, but recently we just got some news that has sparked some new discussions and questions to be looking at this team, Patrick. So, it’s great to have these talks. Yeah, I think Brad just keeps doing it when we least expect it, but I think like you said, his main goal is pretty much set and I think we know exactly what’s going to go down and there’s definitely a lot of moves to be made still. You’re telling me in August on a random August Tuesday at 3:30 weren’t expecting a George’s Denis trade for know that’s the same thing for me as well, Patrick. So, I know that the fans as well weren’t really t tapped in tuned in and kind of just came out as a major shock. So, let’s dive in and let’s explore what really happened and what these uh news can mean for future implications for this Celtics team as we dive in and explore what could be next for this Celtics squad. And like we kind of discussed and broke down a little bit here just this Tuesday, Patrick, we saw some waves coming through on the Boston Celtics side of things as they went up and they traded George’s Nang away to the Utah Jazz attached with two second round picks for RJ Lewis Jr. We did find out that the Celtics did attach the lesser or the better of their 31 second round swap and I believe their 22nd second 26th second round pick swap in that deal. And then they followed that move by adding Chris Bucher as like I mentioned R.J. Lewis on that two-way deal was not on the roster. So now the Celtics replaced George’s Nang with Chris Buchet who I think is going to be a little bit of a better player on a cheaper deal for this squad. And now with that being said, we look at the salary cap. the Celtics. $199 million currently sitting $8 million under the second apron, $4 million over the first and roughly right around $8 million or $12 million, excuse me, underneath the luxury tax threshold. And that has been the Celtics main plan as they’ve been trying to shed this salary and luxury tax, which get them out of the aprons and do this wild stuff. Patrick, almost over $300 million shed from the Boston Celtics in two months. Just looking at that is just crazy sight to see in my eyes. No, it’s truly unbelievable. What? $31 million in less than two months. I mean, we knew that something was going to happen this quick. It feels like I don’t think that quick. I think we had till up until the deadline and we thought that that’s how long it would take. But Brad’s been pretty quick and no one’s really been moving things and he’s kind of keeping things moving for himself and he’s getting the guys that he wants and I think he’s making some good decisions and we just got to see what he’s going to make more down the line. Yeah, I completely agree and like you mentioned we’ve seen these moves obviously not all at once but they have been going kind of transcendy this season. We obviously saw the Anthony Simons for Drew Holiday swap. Then we saw the George’s Nang trade where the Celtics got him for Christophs Porzingis and created that $22 million TPE. They also create another $8 million TPE for the George Niang trade. So for people saying the Celtics traded Christophs Porzingis for a two-way player. Oh my god. Well, guess what? They created two separate TPEs that they can use throughout the season which should get them players for that value if they do do decide to go down that route. But Patrick, we do know that the Celtics still goal is to shed some of this money. And from looking at this salary cap, we do know that they currently set at $199 million. And the big question is who could be that next person on the move for the Boston Celtics if they are able to get underneath. We saw a guy in George’s Nang recently leave. That still raises the questions around one shooting guard in Anthony Simons in my personal opinion. All due to the fact that his number still has yet been released for the Boston Celtics at this point, right? The Boston Celtics are still looking forward to getting something done and I think a guy like Anthony Simons could be on that edge of the block for them. Yeah, I think we just got to remember whatever trades kind of go down, it’s all for a specific purpose and it’s to get under that first amen. That’s Brad’s goal. He wants to have some free reign regardless of who’s coming in. This is the whole purpose and that I truly believe he’s making all these moves quick and it really just feels like this is the only option for the Celtics. And I think that Anthony Simons with the contract that he has, it is a lot of money, but it’s definitely the easiest way to get off of all this, you know, burden off over gez off of his shoulder and out of my mouth because I can’t spit that out of my mouth. But I think that he’s easily the number one option just because of how much his salary is. And I think just another small one would just be Xavier Tilman kind of just moving off him as well. He never really found his spot into this roster and into the lineup as we thought he would. Did well in Memphis, but I think that having a name of Anthony Simons being on the board for a lot of teams, looking for a guard who could shoot the ball really well and definitely has played very well with his time in the league, I think that it’s a great opportunity to move off of him and really get under the apron with what you want. So, I think there’s a lot more options with doing that. Yeah, and like you mentioned with Xavier Tilman, he does make roughly around $2.5 million. And I could see the Celtics with this log jam of a front court now even adding a guy in Chris Buché potentially exploring a deal similar to the Georgees Nang one which they try to sell him for maybe, you know, another two-way, but probably not. Maybe a second round pick that’s kind of has some protections on it. Maybe something that the Celtics don’t end up seeing. But just getting off that salary would help the Celtics shed another $2.5 million, bringing them to 197.4 4 million which would then be you know just inching closer to underneath this apron and that’s where we get into to the breakdown today as we look at players that could potentially be moved for Anthony Simons within this realm and from looking at these contracts obviously added with J Xavier Tilman this would shrink the Boston Celtics underneath those two aprons when trading for some of these guys now some of them I don’t think necessarily will be traded some of them are longer deals with the Celtics looking for some of these expiring contracts Patrick when looking at this list who really stands out to as a possible trade candidate for the Boston Celtics with an Anthony Simons deal. Yeah, I definitely like what we talked about a little bit earlier about looking for expiring contracts as well. And I think it would be easier to move Anthony Simons, who’s also on the expiring contract, to kind of flop those expiring contracts like we were talking about. So, I think kind of guys that fit that category maybe in a Nerkage just because of how well he’s kind of been shooting the ball more from three and I think that kind of gives the Celtics a little bit more of an option with the offense that they play with. He’s a little bit older and the Celtics definitely don’t have the depth at the big man position right now. It’s just me as Kada looking to start. Could be Luca Garza or whoever it may be coming in. But I think that that’s definitely a viable option. And I mean other than that, when it comes to guards, there’s a lot of them that are locked in long term. Maybe you see a guy like Kevin Herder. He kind of has that shooting type of style that the Celtics do love to play. I mean you have him and a Sam Hower. That’s definitely a little bit of a deadly duo coming off of the bench. and he could even start games as well. He’s kind of more of a pure scorer than Sam Hower is. But I think those are two options that kind of just interest me just right off the bat. Yeah, I would agree with you. I think another one like we were talking about in Kevin Herder uh is absolutely fantastic. He also kind of brings that role coming off the bench for the Boston Celtics which I would really really like in my opinion. Giving Pton Pritchard that starting role kind of getting rid of that conversation between Anthony Simons, Derek and Peter Pritchard in this guard room. Bogdan Bdonovich I also think kind of fits that rule pretty well. That’s $16 million as well is a team option. So the Celtics could get off of that money going into next year taking on an expiring contract. And for the Clippers searching for those expiring deals and for this one two-year push with all their contracts that they have stack loaded, a guy like Anthony Simons could be a little bit of an upgrade in Bogdanovich over there. When looking at the center rotation, maybe a guy in Zack Collins makes sense. maybe a guy Yousef Nerkich if you’re trying to kind of fill in there. But those don’t really scream replacements for the year. They seem like just kind of shedding the salary and maybe that’s a decision that the Celtics are a little bit worse in the standings than we see them kind of go that route there making it a little bit easier. But like you said, Patrick, I think those are kind of the names to really look at. Regarding the wings, maybe Harrison Barnes, Ruby Hachimura, but guys like Zubac, Nemhard, Caruso, Patrick Williams, Kell Johnson, Grayson Allen just don’t really make sense. Yeah, I think you’re kind of just looking at a couple of players that that teams might want to really just get off of. And I think that’s kind of like the way that they will be moving. And I mean, even a team like Chicago, like we’re talking about with Kevin Herder, I think that they would love to have a guy like Anthony Simons come in and play the guard spot for them because they have not done anything with Josh Giddy yet, which is still a surprise. So maybe this is something that would kind of keep Vuvich around if they’re trying to work a deal around him still. And I think that that duo can work out great. So I think that looking for a team that’s kind of looking to push off some of these guys that aren’t like locked in like we’re looking at an Andrew Nemhar, a Zubox, like Alex Garuso. Those guys like we talked about, they’re not going to go anywhere it seems like. And I think that it’s kind of guys that could kind of be halfway out the door and would also love to have Anthony Simons. And I think Chicago is is probably a great spot for him. Yeah. And Chicago also has the questions around Kobe White and A Dumu. But maybe if they get a guy in Anthony Sirens comes in, steps up, looks the right play, maybe they don’t have to go in to bring one of those guys or renegotiate one of those guys. They have one Anthony Simons, they resign him, bring him back. Maybe they lose Josh Giddy, they still want to have some more guard play. A guy like him can make an impact. And I do think if you’re training out Kevin Herder for Anthony Simons, that’s a plus for you in my eyes. So I think that would be some needed upgrades, especially for a team in Chicago who’s still trying to make that imprint and trying to figure out their situation there over in the East. But Patrick, I think we have good names, a couple of names, excuse me, and a good group of names as well. Not only to help shed the salary for the Boston Celtics, but also could make some impacts here as well if the Celtics were looking to still go with that route, go with that plan, their master plan here of trying to get underneath both aprons in hopefully this one off season to really reset their roster around Tatum Brown and Derek White for their next year when they keep going in for those championship pushes. Yeah, I mean definitely. And I think just one thing too that’s always interesting we didn’t get to bring up is also if they do shut off Xavier Tilman and they make this trade, get one player back in return, they have that extra roster spot open as well. So then there’s two spots and there’s a couple of guys that we like to talk about like Charles Vassie and maybe bringing back Al Horford. So this opens up a lot of opportunity. That’s why we just wanted to cover because there’s a lot of moving pieces going on and Brad Stevens is definitely not done. So you’re going to have to be on the lookout. Yeah, I would definitely agree with that. The Charles Bassie interest is still in with the Boston Celtics on his end. Obviously, we could still see Al Horford come back. There’s also the plausibility of a guy in Amari Williams who has not gotten his 2-way yet. Could he get the last guaranteed roster spot? Could a guy in Miles Norris get a guaranteed spot and Amari gets the final 2-way? Those are the big questions to really dive in and explore within this Boston Celtics team. in this Boston Celtics realm now as obviously it’s been a little bit quiet, but with the more recent ramifications, there will be some stuff coming through and I expect, like you said, Patrick, some more news to be coming through.
