Make sure that you’re with us each and every time that an episode drops. Again, friendly reminder here in the dog days of August. Little bit lighter load, three to four episodes a week here in the month of August. This is a week where there’s a three episodes. If there’s a breaking news thing or something like that, we’ll certainly get on that topic. But again, a lighter lighter content because of the dog days of the NBA offseason. So, uh, we don’t want to disrespect our audience’s intelligence. Every time an episode drops, we got something to talk about. And something that we got to talk about today is the NBA locked on top 100 players ballots are due today. I am a good student. I’m a good employee, a good listener. I got my ballot in early, a day early. Some people got it in earlier than that, but I got it in a day early. And I wanted to share with you some aspects of my top 100 list. And obviously next week to Michael can do the same. Might be similar, might be different. The whole reason that locked on is doing this is we have grown so much as a network thanks to you our wonderful listeners and viewers that we are in a position where we want to be one of those spots where people start their discourse about a list, right? Lots of different outlets have lists. We want to start that process on our end and it’s supposed to start a conversation, right? There might be something you agree with me on, disagree with me on. I have a sneaky suspicion some of you are going to think that I’m crazy one way or another when I unveil my balloting here. And again, I’m going to talk about the two best Memphis Grizzlies players, probably the only two players that are going to make the list in Jiren Jackson Jr. and Jaw Morant. And then to close out the show today, I’m going to give you my top 10. And maybe Jaw’s in there, maybe Jiren’s in there, maybe not. You’ll just have to hang around and wait over the next couple of segments and find out where I put these guys. But it’s supposed to spark a conversation. Hit me up on X at Joe Molenx. Let us know in the comments how you’re feeling about these rankings. So again, we’re going one through 100 and it was a pretty tedious, if I’m being honest, process, but I I did enjoy it because again, it tests how in tune you are with the NBA at large. And obviously, you cross reference your voting with other lists. And I got to admit, outside of a couple of exceptions, I was pretty in lock step with a lot of them. Okay, give or take a ranking here or there. And we’re gonna start with the guy that I put first from the Memphis Grizzlies. I want to stress that the first Memphis Grizzly on my list, Jaw Morant. Now, on a previous episode, I explained why Jaw is still higher than Jiren for me. I am fairly confident that when the networkwide list goes live, Jiren is going to be higher than Jaw. That is how the ringer currently has it. For example, I believe Jared is number 25 or something on that list in the top 25 or 30. Jaws in like number 35 or something. So, the Ringer and I think other national outlets are going to say that Jiren Jackson Jr. is the best player on the Memphis Grizzlies and John Morant is second best now. I disagree with that as somebody that follows the Grizzlies, as somebody that’s covered them for over a decade. I think that you can certainly say Jiren’s the best two-way player on the team, but the impact that Jaw has offensively is is seismic when he is at his best. And we are looking at these lists, unless somebody has a chronic ailment that may derail their career, like say like a Joel Embiid, right? The way that I’m looking at this list is if you’re just injured, I’m not going to punish you for that, right? Like we’ll talk more about my top 10 here in a little bit. You’ll notice that there is going to be one name that I probably have higher than a lot of people do because I think he’s become underrated at this point. And we’ll get there at the end of the show. I think that you have to look at it through the lens of when they’re competing at their highest level in the here and now, what are they capable of, right? Injuries aside, unless it’s something like an Embiid situation. And that is why I put John Morant on my ballot for the NBA top 100 for locked on at number 16. He was number 16 on my list, right outside of the top 15. I have him just behind Anthony Davis and Kawhi Leonard. And I have him just in front of Jaylen Williams and Carl Anthony Towns. Now, holy moly, right? I think that that’s probably going to be a little bit a little bit controversial, especially among my co-hosts. I think they’re going to say I’m a big old homer when it comes to that pick. But I want to stress what I’ve said time and time again. I saw what John Morant is capable of when he is at his best. I saw with my own eyes what John Morant did to the Oklahoma City Thunder in that game three. How he put together one of the best stretches of his career once Tumas iso took the reigns of the Memphis Grizzlies. We have a sample size, a big enough one where if Jaw can stay on the court, and again we’re assuming the other guys can stay on the court. If Jaw can stay on the court, there is no way that there are 20 players in the National Basketball Association better than him. As a scorer, as an assist creator and facilitator, engine of offense, however you want to phrase it, John Morant is one of the absolute best. Now, why do I have him at number 16 behind Anthony Davis and Kawhi Leonard? I think that the old guard of the NBA is still very much a part of the process. For the record, my the way my rankings worked out, I had LeBron at 12, KD, Kevin Durant at 13, and then Anthony Davis and Kawhai, and AD is younger than those other three. But those four backto back to back to back, it’s hard for me to put Jaw in front of them if I use the same logic, right? When Anthony Davis is on the court, especially against the Memphis Grizzlies, it feels like he’s a complete and utter dominant force, right? a dominant impact player. When Kawawaii is out there, it’s the same deal. Obviously, they load manage him. They’re worried about his knee and other ailments. When he’s out there, Kawhi Leonard’s one of the absolute best on the planet. So, I have Kawhai and AD in front of there because I think they have a similar impact to Morant when they’re on the court. It’s just a little bit higher for me right now. Right. I have Morant in front of Jaylen Williams partly because I think a lot of what Jaylen Williams, well, not a lot. I think some of what Jaylen Williams of the Oklahoma City Thunder does is because so much attention is paid to SGA, right? If John Morant were able to be a true number two on another team, like say he went to be LeBron’s teammate on the Lakers or say he went to be, you know, with Anthony Edwards in Minnesota, had that combination, would Jaw be a bigger producer? I I think the answer is yes. Right. So I I I have Jaws a higher level talent than Jaylen Williams and Carl Anthony Towns. The same is true of him to be honest with you in terms of his relationship with Jaylen Brunson there on the Knicks. I love Towns’s game. You might be able to do the transit of property a little bit here and realize I haven’t said Jiren Jackson Jr.’s name yet. And again, that might be something you get mad at me here in a little while. But I think that Towns is a really, really strong number two. A really, really strong number two player. The Knicks are a title contender coming out of the Eastern Conference because they have that strong level of a number two. Looking at the way that I ranked my roster, I would say that Jaw is probably the worst number one option, if that makes sense. And again, LeBron’s not the number one option with the Lakers. is obviously Luca, who we’ll talk more about later on, but I could see Jaw, he is a fringe, twinge, edgeofthe- line guy that can be a superstar on a team trying to contend for a championship. If you remember correctly going back, you know, earlier in the season, if you’re an everydayer to this podcast, you know that I had some doubts about that at times over the last year or so. But again, I saw what I saw under Tua Masel. It was very small sample size, but I saw what I saw. And I think that the roster is being set up to really amplify the game of John Morant. And I think that when his game is amplified and put in a position to succeed, he is going to have a massive darkhorse MVP caliber season. So I have Jaw number 16 on my ballot. I’m fairly confident that will be one of the highest votes for Jaw in this process. I’m interested to hear what Demich thinks of that next week. And I’m interested to hear what you have to say about that choice. John Morant number 16 in my top 100 rankings. Where would you have John Morant? Let me know in the comments. Hit me up on XJO moments. When we come back here on Lockdown Grizzlies, where does Jiren Jackson Jr. stack up? Not that far behind. Stick around here on Lockdown Grizzlies. It’s probably the highest I can go as I alluded to earlier in the show. Where do I have Jiren Jackson Jr.? I have Jiren Jackson Jr. at number 20. I have Jiren Jackson Jr. at number 20. So again, John Moran at 16, Jaylen Williams 17, Carl Anthony Towns 18, Cade Cunningham 19, Jiren Jackson Jr. 20. Evan Mobley is 21. Jaylen Brown is 22. Pascal Seakkum is number 23 for reference. All right. I already talked about Towns a little bit. Again, he benefits from Jaylen Brunson. Really solid number two. I see Jaw as a fringe number one on a championship contending team. To me, Jiren Jackson Jr. is an elite number two, right? And I think Kate Cunningham with the Pistons, number one option, I would say for Detroit. I don’t know that I would qualify them as a championship contending team. I don’t know that he is that level yet, especially at 23 years old, right? He’s still a couple years away. Maybe he jumps jaw in the next season or two. That’s possible, right? Jiren Jackson Jr. is an elite number two player for me. Elite, because he can do things as a two-way player that are special, right? I’m not saying that he is somebody that you put on the Washington Wizards and the Wizards can say this guy is going to lead us to a championship. I don’t think Jiren has that game mostly because he can’t facilitate on the offensive end. His game is too predictable there. Now, it can grow still. Of course, he can develop and find space to be able to have his vision improved and be able to keep his eyes up on dribble penetration drives from the perimeter and find those open shooters, those cutters back door. He has that capacity. He just hasn’t done it consistently yet. So, the fact that he is an elite defensive player still, multiple AllNBA defensive teams, obviously a former defensive player of the year, he has that capacity and he’s grown so much over the last two seasons as an offensive weapon. He is like the Jaylen Williams in terms of a big to me. If John Morant can get to the level, maybe not quite of an SGA, and we’ll talk more about SGA here in a little bit, maybe he can’t get up to that level of offensive scoring production, but if he is capable of being in that top 10ish realm, which he is not, right? Again, I’ll give you my top 10 that doesn’t feature any Memphis Grizzlies here in a little bit. If Jaw can get close to that, I think you could see Jiren having a Jaylen Williamsesque impact in those moments. I believe in Jiren in that way, but his facilitation offensively leads something to be desired. Michael and I have talked about that a ton and his rebounding is a problem, right? I think his rebounding is a problem. Now, let’s go back to the list. Let’s talk about who he’s behind and who he’s in front of. Again, I talked about Kate Cunningham a little bit. I think Kate Cunningham is the best player on the Detroit Pistons. I think that if you move Jiren to the Pistons, I’m not sure he dethrones Cunningham for that role. So that kind of was a a demarcation point for me in my debate between do I move Jiren to 19 Cade back. Towns is a better overall player in my opinion than Jiren. He does what Jiren does better than Jiren. Uh at least to me the way I see it. I think that Cat is a better rebounder. Obviously, he’s a better three-point shooter. And to be honest with you, in terms of assists, there’s ways that you could argue that he’s a better facilitator of offense than Jiren is. Jiren’s a better defender than Towns, but I think that offensively and especially on the glass, Cat does a lot of what Jiren does well better than Jiren. So, I’m comfortable with Cat in front of Jiren. I think the Grizzlies would be better if it was Carl Anthony Towns instead of Jiren Jackson Jr. especially better offensively. Cade Cunningham in that lead role. I don’t think he unseats Cade in that spot in Detroit. So that’s why I put him behind Cade. I put him in front of Evan Mobley and I think that’s going to be something and Pascal Seakum and Jaylen Brown. I think that’s going to be something that is going to be controversial and people are going to call me a homer and that sort of stuff. I have logic behind these choices. Okay. Now obviously Jaylen recent or Jaylen Brown recent MVP of the finals. Pascal Seakkum was a major piece of that Indiana Pacers run in the recent finals this past season. Obviously Jaylen Brown was the season before. But Jaylen struggled a lot. Jaylen Brown from three. It was not his most efficient season in that way. Pascal Seakkum caught he caught fire there in the postseason, but it’s not like it was something that he did in the regular season that really pushed them beyond and above their capabilities, right? The Pacers got hot. The Pacers had a legendary epic run of closing out basketball games that I’m not sure can ever be replicated again. And then you go to Evan Mobley and Evan Mobley is somebody that you know some people including the ringer have in front of Carl Anthony Towns. I think that so much of Moy is projection and I am going to contradict myself a little bit when I get to my top 10 list about that because if you were paid attention to our last episode of Lockdown Grizzlies, I did that with a certain Southwest Division basketball team and I’m going to do that with their best player as well. Evan Mobley is a really impressive defensive player obviously, but he is somebody that again he doesn’t have the same level of offensive development that Jiren does. He just doesn’t. He is a comparable defender. You can make a logical argument he’s better than Jiren defensively, but he doesn’t have the same nuance and layers to his offensive game. And if you took Donovan Mitchell away from Evan Moley, would he be able to be the offensive player that Jiren is without Jaw? I have real questions about that. Jiren has a lot of skills that are guard similar in terms of being a perimeterbased player. It’s one of the reasons that so many of you get frustrated by him with his low rebounding numbers. He’s 6’1, 245 pounds, but he doesn’t rebound like a guy that has that size and frame. because so much of what he does on both ends of the court take him away from the paint. On the offensive end, he’s one of the best isolation scorers in basketball. He does that starting out on the perimeter, not down in the low post. On the defensive end, he is best as a weak side help defender that comes up and defends at the rim. It’s really difficult to defend at the rim on a shot off of drill penetration or a cut off of a screen or a back door cut. It’s really hard to do that and get the rebound at the same time. So, what the Grizzlies have in the past under Taylor Jenkins, important to preface it with that, we have no idea what Tomomasis is going to do with a full preseason, but it’s important to acknowledge that Jiren rebounding wise has not been asked to do what other bigs like Moy and an and Carl Anthony Towns have been asked to do. Mobly is somebody that I look at his game and I think again he’s a really good player obviously in this conversation and there’s going to be people that a lot of people that have Moy in front of Jiren but I watched these last two years of Memphis Grizzlies basketball. A lot of these voters didn’t. They’re going to look at Jiren’s numbers. That’s what they’re going to base it off of. I watched Jiren grow offensively in a way where he is a legitimate two-way star in the NBA. Almost an AllNBA performer this past season. If the Grizzlies hadn’t fallen apart in the second half of the year, he is an allNBA performer. I think there’s some recency bias and there’s also some, oh, his numbers aren’t as good as his other guys. Give me the guy that if you watch tape, you can see impact the game at a high level on both ends of the floor when he’s by himself if he has to be by himself. I’m not sure you can say the same thing about Moy. He hasn’t really shown that to me. It’s possible he can. I’m not going to act like I watch all the Cavs games, but I’ve watched enough of Moy to know he is not as good in my opinion as Jiren Jackson Jr. Let me know in the comments. Hit me up on X at Joe Molenx. Do you agree with my ranking of Jiren’s? So again, I’ve got Jiren at number 20 in my top 100, Jaw at number 16. Neither of them are in the top 10. I’m going to talk about who is my top 10 in our all locked on NBA top 100 rankings. Stick around here on Lockdown Grizzlies. Today’s episode of Lockdown Grizzlies is brought to you by FanDuel. No to Michael Cole as he gets his golf on there in Memphis, Tennessee with a golf tournament currently going on there in the city. Uh I’ve been showing sharing my top 20ish list with locked on NBA’s top 100 voting because that’s where Jared and Jaw fell. John Morant was at number 16 for me. Jiren Jackson Jr. at number 20. Remember, hit me up on X. Let me know in the comments how you feel about those rankings. Too high, too low. Here is my top 10. All right. So, again, it’s not exactly the same as the Ringer or any of these other uh places. This is Joe Mullenax’s list. This is the Mulla list, if you will. The Mullenax list of the top 10 players in the National Basketball Association. I mentioned a moment ago, starting at number 10, I talked about projection with Evan Mobley and that sort of thing. I I’m I’m being a little bit contradictory here because my number 10 player in the NBA is Victor Wmanyaba. Now, if I’m being honest, as I was going through this process, just because I, you know, I like to spite Tyresese Hallebertton at times, despite how well he played in the playoffs and how elite he was in that space and how, you know, terrible his injury is, I still struggle with putting Hallebertton in front of Jaw, which I did on this list because I do think I have to be somewhat unbiased as a analyst of basketball in the in the loosest sense of the word. So, Victor Webbyama is at number 10 instead of somebody like LeBron James. I think LeBron could fit there if if that’s your whimsy, if that’s how you feel. When Benyama is just such an elite defender already. He literally could be the next 10 years. He’ll be in the defensive player of the year conversation. He has an offensive game that is so unique and elite. Again, he does things that Jiren does really well better than Jiren and he’s several years younger. So, I think when at 10, I win Jaylen Brunson at nine of the New York Knicks. really crafty scorer, has such a great handle, really fun to watch him play basketball. Love me some Jaylen Brunson. I’ve got him at number nine. And again, him with with Carl Anthony Towns is a great pairing. Donovan Mitchell at number eight. I think again there in Cleveland, I talked a little bit about how impactful he’s been, how that might aid what uh Evan Mobley has been able to do. I’ve seen Jiren do it without Jaw, right? I think Donovan Mitchell is a force unto himself on the offensive end and that allows for Mobley to perhaps showcase and score in a way that he wouldn’t be able to if he was the primary focus. Uh but I do love Donovan Mitchell. I think he’s an elite offensive player. Steph Curry at number seven. Steph Curry remains the best three-point shooter in the NBA. He remains an offensive weapon. And something that’s underrated about Steph Curry, not just, you know, his shooting of course on the offensive end, he’s an amazing ball handler, right? So much of the ability of him to be elite scoring the ball on the perimeter is the way he creates space for himself. He’s an undersized guard, but he’s just really phenomenal when it comes to his handle. He’s one of the most underrated dribblers of the basketball in the NBA in my opinion, and he continues to revolutionize the game. So, Steph Curry at number seven, Anthony Edwards, probably one of the best, if not the best two-way wings in the entire NBA, a phenomenal defender and athlete that also is able to do great things offensively. his three-point shot has really taken off. I think Ant-Man is number six in terms of best players. I’ve got Jason Tatum at number five, and this is the one that I talked about earlier. You know, I think he’s gotten underrated at this point. It’s pretty wild to me in my research for this list making uh seeing some folks have him as low as 11 or 12 in the NBA. Again, if you’re taking the Achilles out of it, which if you’re doing that for Tyresese Hallebertton, you probably should do it for Jason Tatum as well. Makes sense. You know, Jason Tatum was the best player on a recent NBA Finals team. He can score, he can defend. Again, we talk about two-way combo com type guys. I would say Edwards is more of a wing and Tatum’s more of a forward at this point. But Jason Tatum’s, you know, if Giannis onto Duo didn’t exist. I think Jason Tatum is probably the best combo forward in the game. So number five for Jason Tatum, I’m very confident in that ranking. Number four, I’ve got Luca Donuch. Still irks me that that trade occurred. you know, the Dallas Mavericks might have a team that can contend a little bit more in the here and now. I I need to see it first to be honest with you. Um, but Luca at his age, doing what he does, being a top five player, a phenomenal offensive weapon regardless of his conditioning, looks like he’s in better shape, but just a really impressive offensive player. One of the best maybe of all time already, uh, offensively in particular, I want to stress. Just an elite offensive weapon. certainly one of the best young players that the league has ever seen. Uh Giannis at number three, I think that we underappreciate Giannis’s greatness. He is tremendous on both ends of the court. He’s a force of nature. You know exactly what he’s going to do on offense and you can’t stop it. He’s an elite player in terms of eating the glass, rebounding, defending, just a really impressive all-around player that despite his limitations from beyond the ark, you still can’t stop him. And again, he’s really grown as a facilitator’s offense as well. He can play any position on the court just about. Uh SGA at number two, the reigning MVP having one of the best seasons of best years that anybody’s ever had in the history of basketball. SGA deserves every accolade, a tremendous score, the catalyst for the amazing season that the Oklahoma City Thunder just wrapped up with a championship, but I’ve still got him behind number one, the Joker, Nicola Joic. Again, talk about being underappreciated. This is a guy who has had several seasons in a row, some of the most impressive statistical seasons, especially analytically in the history of the National Basketball Association. The Joker, again, you’re never going to mistake him for a defensive wonderkin, but he is it’s like watching a a master conductor. It’s like watching somebody cons uh orchestrating a symphony and he just has complete and total control of the game, especially on the offensive end. Elite touch, elite vision. He does things that very few people in the history of basketball have ever done. So Nicola Joic is number one for me. So again, my top 10 is Joic, SGA, Giannis, Luca Donic, Jason Tatum, Anthony Edwards, Steph Curry, Donovan Mitchell, Jaylen Brunson, and then Victor Wimanyama. That is my top 10 in the National Basketball Association. How did I do? Do you agree? Disagree? Do you think I’m an idiot? Do you think I’m brilliant? Let me know in the comments. Hit me up on X. Again, one of the reasons we’re doing this here at NB uh locked on NBA is we’re trying to start conversations. We’re trying to begin dialogues here. All right. So, let’s hear what you have to say about the voting. I want to stress this is my ballot. Okay. The official list when that comes out, obviously, we’ll talk more about that at that time. Good list. I would put KAT over Cunningham
Call 12! 📞 verrrry few people can get a bucket like Ja can get a bucket, especially in clutch time. When he’s right he’s top 10 no debate. Maybe even top 5!!
I got Ja at # 12 and Jaren at # 8 lol
