After Jokic and SGA, who is the best player in the Western Conference?

teacher talking sports with those would do how we live in the NBA’s Western Conference is seen as the better conference amongst the two in the NBA. I mean, especially due to injuries from Tyrese Hallebertton and Jason Tatum. But when it comes to the best players in the NBA’s Western Conference, really shouldn’t be much of a debate for who should be considered the top two. Uh Nicola Yokic has won three of the last five MVPs and finished runner up the other two years. Shay Gilis Alexander is the reigning MVP and finals MVP. Now after that many people’s next tier would probably have Stephen Curry, Luca Donuch, and Anthony Edwards on it. But which of the three would be considered the uh better player heading into 2025 26? I tend to believe most people would probably say Luca, but this writer here for NBA.com, Sean Powell, does something different. And we’ll look at the whole list, but um I want to mainly focus on that. uh before looking at the whole list uh really between number three and four. So uh yes, Sean Powell ranks the top 10 players in the West. So first he’s got the Joker. Uh no surprise there for sure. Number two, he’s got Sheay Gilis Alexander. Also not a surprise. Maybe some people would switch the order. I personally wouldn’t due to, you know, Joker being considered a top player, top two player for a little bit longer than Shay Gillis Alexander has. So, uh, but it is close. So, third, coming in at third is the young gun, Anthony Edwards, who just turned 24 years old two days ago. Let me accept these cookies. Um, he’s in third and in fourth is Luca Donic. Curry’s fifth. Uh Curry’s, you know, more than a decade older than both of them as, as I mentioned, Edwards is 24, Luca is 26, and Curry is 37. But uh so it may surprise some people to see Edwards ahead of Donic. And you know that’s even more true because when you you know this off season Luca’s been uh talked about quite frequently especially of late uh due to the body transformation that found him gracing the cover of men’s health. So you know that has people speculating uh how a more in shape Donich could perform. Uh but even the heavier version of Doninch was seen as a transcendent player. Uh while he fell short of the 65game minimum last season to receive all NBA odds, he was on the first team the previous five years, won a scoring title, finished in the top six MVP voting four times, helped guide the Mavericks to the finals in 2024. Meanwhile, Edwards finished seventh in MVP twice. That’s the last two seasons. um made the NBA second team twice and is hopeful to lead the Timberwolves to their first ever NBA finals. So, you know, while Donuch has accumulated more accolades, albeit with two additional years in the league, it was Edwards Wolves that eliminated Donuch’s Lakers in the opening round of playoffs last season. LA entered the series as favorites, but it wasn’t particularly close to Minnesota disposing them in five games. Even though Donuch averaged 30.2 two points. It wasn’t his greatest series. Uh frequent turnovers just didn’t make the impact he normally does. And uh you know, fivegame series wasn’t relatively close. Now, it was the year before that Luca uh Mavericks did beat Edwards Timberwolves in the Western Conference Finals and Donic played much better. Uh but yeah, I really want to know your thoughts on who you think is the better player. So, uh, let’s go through the rest of the list really quick. Stephen Curry, five. Anthony Davis, six. Interesting. Kevin Durant 7. Okay. New Houston Rocket. Kawi Leonard 8. LeBron James 9. Victor Webbyama 10. What do you notice about the middle of that list? Uh, well, guys, what is it? Five. No. Yeah, five through nine. are all at least 32 years old. The youngest is uh Anthony Davis uh who is 32. Um you know, Carrie older, Durant older, Kawawaii older, LeBron certainly older. Um you know, personally, I don’t think I would put all those guys over um Victor Wbeyama. Um, you know, when Binyama entering his third season, way younger. He is 21 years old. He’ll turn 22 on January 4th. Honestly, I would have him over AD. I’d probably have him over LeBron. Uh, for next season and um Kawaii, I would have him over Kawawaii. And Durant. Uh, I I that that’s a questionable one, but yeah. Where would you rank Victor Webeyama amongst the Western Conference best players? Was anyone’s absence notable? You know, a Jaylen Williams, um, I don’t know, Jarant, Jiren Jackson. Do you think anyone else uh deserved a lot of consideration for the top 10? Uh, interesting list. Uh, I can’t say I fully agree with it. Me personally, I think I would have to go put Luca for now over Edwards. Uh, but you know, we’ll see if that’s still the case at the end of the season.
