Dallas Mavericks 2025 Offseason Recap
Yo, what’s going on, guys? And today we’ll be talking about the Dallas Mavericks off season. Of course, the big headline, they got Cooper flag. No, this is not any sort of conspiracy. The balls are drawn. I’ve actually had the opportunity to be at the draft the past three years or draft combine, draft lottery for the past three years. Last year, I found out that we could apply to be in the lottery. This past year, we decided not to be in the lottery. Technically, Scott or Sam or I could, you know, apply to go in the the room what they that they do everything, but you know, we didn’t do it cuz we’d rather just be trying to get intel and talking to people cuz there’s a lot of agents there. And then, of course, on the the night of the actual draft, it’s more of green room type sort of deal and you’re all put in like the gallows of the Barlay Center. Now, we’ll be discussing what the Mavericks did this off season. As always, in the comments, what do you think they did? What was their best addition outside of Cooper Flag? And do you think this is a contender regardless if Kyrie plays this season or not? I’d like to hear what you guys have to say. And if you guys enjoy this type of content, hit the like and subscribe button. It helps out the channel a ton. Now, if you guys want to just take a look at who came back, who did they convince to stay? Well, the people who are staying are a few people that are pretty wellnown. Kyrie Irving signs a three-year extension, which still gives him an opportunity in the final year. It’s really just a two-year deal. next year pays him, then the following year, and then there’s an out, which they could, you know, renegotiate a new deal, extend him one more time before because that’s when the the 38 rule comes into effect after his next falling extension, meaning that he could probably sign another three-year extension, maximizing his value in terms of career earnings, regardless if he’s a Max player in his next deal or not. So, that’s just like a little bit of information to discuss right there. Now, Dante Axum, their point of attack defender who can play the one, the two, the three for them. A former lottery pick who went overseas, came back, has been a quintessential part of their defense when healthy. He had a wrist injury that really bugged him all of last year, never felt like that he was himself. So, bringing him back on that cheap deal is huge for this franchise moving forward. Now I think we look at who did they bring in? Who were the additions outside of Cooper Flag? There are two players that they brought in. Who is that? D’Angel Russell, which if they were trying to find someone who was the poor man’s version of Kyrie was a guy who at times plays at an all-star level. He could shoot you into any game. At the same time, he can shoot you out of a game. he can create for others. When engaged, he’s a solid player. They signed him using the taxpayer mid-level exception to a two-year about 11 million deal. Obviously, they drafted, the s sensational player out of Maine, specifically playing for the College of Duke. I went to the University of Kansas, so it’s not like I’m a Blue Devils fan. Ironically, I was though a everybody hates Christian Lener fan because I like I like that attitude. Now, the big one is out of Gonzaga, undrafted free agent, Ryan Nemhard. He’s only 5’10”, listed at six foot. Younger brother Drew Nemhard, Andrew Nemhard, who was a star in this past year’s finals run for the Indiana Pacers. He’s a passing phenom, cerebral passer, one of the best passers in this draft, if not the best passing guard up there with the Demon, who was drafted by the Brooklyn Nets on a two-way for the Mavericks. solid pickup for a franchise that he could end up maybe pushing Brandon Williams for some minutes. Now, if we’re talking about this team’s depth chart, what does it currently look like? Well, D’Angel Russell, Klay Thompson, Cooper Flag, Anthony Davis, and Derek Lively are the projected starters. Now, second unit, Daniel Gaffford, PJ Washington, Nani Marshall, Max Christie make up the four guys in that nineman rotation. And the biggest question mark right now is is it going to be Jaden Hardy? Is it going to be Brandon Williams or even Dante Exom backing up the Angel Russell to start the year? Jaden Hardy was always more of a swingman, you know, kind of not a swingman because he’s too small for that, but he’s always more of a two guard than a true point guard with a little bit of point guard skills, more of a score, kind of a six-man role. Dante Axum is more of a defensive guy who’s more in a, you know, that combo undersized swingman role. And then Brandon Williams, who had a great end of last year, good playoff, you know, performance, is someone that I think could end up being that guy. Also, they’re two-way. Ryan Demard could actually be that guy. He’s older than you’d think. What, 23, 24 years old. Matthew Cleveland and Musa Cece are both on exhibit 10’s, which is basically the I think it’s 60,000 or almost 70,000 is the current G-League contract. If they which they more than likely won’t make the NBA team or the two-way contract, they get cut. If they stay 60 days on the G-League affiliate, they get a $50,000 bonus, which pushes them into that six figure six six figure salary range of an of playing basketball in America, which entices them to stay within the Texas Legends G-League affiliate within the Dallas Mavericks sphere. So, that’s huge. They have Dwight Powell, Omax, Olivier Max and Prosper. Who’s Omax and Dwight Powell are probably both trade candidates. Same thing maybe PJ Washington and Caleb Martin. They did resign Daniel Gaffford for who for a while we thought they weren’t going to resign. So snaps right there that they were able to bring them back. Now looking at the rest of the roster or rest of the moves that they did this off season, it brought them to a total payroll of $26.8 million. The luxury tax line is $187.9 million specifically. So to me, I think that’s actually a really good use of their money. They still could do a little bit of moving. That’s why I think they’ll do one more move cuz they’re only just barely a million under a million dollars over that second apron. So they can do a deal to get them under the second apron. More than likely will. If they could do, for example, trade PJ Washington for like a Dean Wade, obviously a three third a third team would have to be roped in there because the Cavs would have to be doing plethora of moves to be dumping salary to get under the second apron themselves. But in that scenario, you would be able to get out of I believe the first apron because Dean White’s making like six and what PJ’s making like 16. So it’s like a $10 million. Maybe you moved to one other person like Caleb Martin and there you’re able to get over it and that’ll allow you to get out of potentially the aprons and still have the flexibility while having the championship aspirations with Anthony Davis being on your roster. Now, I think big picture tech takeaways right here. If we look at everything that happened, they got like look, I wrote generational right here because I wanted it to be a talking point. Do you think he’s generational? I don’t think he’s generational. I think there’s been seven generational players of all time. And this is where we I put this because I I didn’t want Dallas Maverick fans to get mad at me be like, “Well, he is generational.” I think generational is Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Walt Chamberlain, Hakee. Wait, I I made a list one time. It’s Hakee, LeBron, WBY. Hakee, LeBron, WBY, Kareem, Magic, and I think the the other two that Shaq and I think Wiltz the other one right there, right? That number one picks who were generational that like guaranteed not to fail. Now, he is a franchise cornerstone. I do believe that. I think he is a guy like that. They were able to retain Kyrie Irving on a friendlier contract. It gives them room for Russell to become their six-man. He can play with DLO. He can put K I mean Kyrie DLO can play with Kyrie or play off of him or you know relieve him. They also have great depth in their front court with Anthony Davis, Gaffford, Flag, Derek Lively. Now obviously with the additions of PJ Washington, Martin, I just think this is a real team. Max Christie, they are have a they’re, you know, up against the second apron, but it’s going to be easily for them to do the salary cap gymnastics to gain that flexibility. But if they hit that internal growth and stay healthy, regardless of Kyrie, this is a team that could be a playoff team. If they’re healthy and Kyrie comes back this year, this is a team that’s a contender this year. But if they’re not fully healthy this year, they’ll be a playoff team, but a potential contender next year. That’s basically everything I had for you guys today. Hey, if you guys made it to the end of the video, I’d like to hear your guys’ thoughts. Do you guys agree with what I said? Let me know.
