Expectations for the Sacramento Kings “Big 3” | Locked On Kings
Many around the league would scoff at calling the Sacramento Kings trio of Deamontis Sabonis, Zack Lavine, and Demard De Rozan a big three. But their individual talent is undeniable. The fit though, yeah, that’s a concern for Doug Christie and the Kings to figure out. On today’s show, we’ll run through the individual expectations for each of the big three right here on Locked on Kings. You are Locked on Kings, your daily Sacramento Kings podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. And now, ladies and gentlemen, it is that time. Time for another episode of Locked on Kings. Hello and welcome into Locked on Kings, your podcast hub for Sacramento Kings coverage all off season long. Today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Right now, new customers can get $150 in bonus bets when your first $5 bet wins. My name is Matt George. I have the privilege of being your host here. I’m a Sacramento sports anchor and reporter for ABC 10 News. And these three stars that the Sacramento Kings have individually have had beyond impressive careers, maybe two of the three of them and Zack Lavine and Deont Sabonis haven’t lived up to the most competitive of expectations when it comes to actually getting to the postseason and then performing in the postseason. and Demard Rosen too going back to his days as a a legend with the Toronto Raptors. The Raptors had to trade him away for Kawhi Leonard to ultimately win a title. So all three of these guys have their own reputations around the league. Mostly positive in some areas, but there’s certainly a negative to each of their legacies and each of their games. And the Sacramento Kings said, “You know what? Let’s bring them all together here. put him in a purple jersey and see what happens. And that’s where we’re at. We got a small taste of it through the final third of last season. Some great moments, some mostly bad moments, and now we’re gearing up for 82, hopefully more games of the three of them together next season. The talent of the three individually is undeniable. The fit of the three, the fit of this entire Kings roster has always been the biggest question. On my most recent episode of Locked on Kings, before this, I talked about the toughest job that Doug Christie has, and it’s putting the pieces of this puzzle together when the pieces logically don’t really fit. But on today’s episode, we’re going to dive into each of these three players and what the expectations should be for them and what the Kings need from each of them. And we’re going to start with the guy who I believe, if I’m not mistaken, is the longest tenur Sacramento king at this point, and that’s Damontis Sabonis. Last season, numbers-wise, another very impressive season for Domas. He averaged 19 points for the third straight season, 13 rebounds, which led the NBA, and six assists. His assists did drop from the prior season to last season by two a game. So, the Kings getting less playmaking out of Deamont Sabonis. Obviously, the ball got a little more sticky with the way the Kings played last year because of the addition of Demar De Rozan and the Kings going more into an ISO uh heavy offense, which probably there will be elements of that carrying over uh into this coming season. He did take or 12, excuse me, field goal attempts per game and shot 59% from the field. He also averaged two three-point attempts per game and shot 41% from three. bit of a breakout season for Domas from behind the three-point line. Although, I still don’t think any of us would call Domas a consistent three-point threat for defenses to fear. In fact, a lot of the three-point attempts that Dontto Sabonis took were wide open where the defense sagged off on him and just said, “Hey, we dare you to shoot it.” And Domomas was willing to shoot it more and was knocking it down at a again 41%. It’s an impressive clip. Hopefully that continues. The reality is we can’t really ask for better numbers. Sure, we could ask for an increase of blocks per game. We could ask for a decrease of fouls per game and foul trouble. We could ask for him to get back to those eight assists that he was averaging the season before. But for the most part, Demand Sabonis statistically is already one of the best centers in the league. So to continue to ask more of him numberswise alone is I think too much to ask for. Now, let me be very clear. That does not mean that the way Demand Sabone has played last season and the way he’s been playing over his time as a Sacramento King, although there have been a lot of positives over that time, that does not mean that that is the ceiling. That is the cap. And as fans and as an organization, the Kings should not ask and expect more from Damont Sabonis. The numbers specifically we can’t the averages we can expect to be that much better and hopefully won’t be any worse but they need certain things from Domas in the way that he plays every single game. Things about Domas that we can never question. He plays hard and he shows up right. He plays through injury and when he’s on the floor he plays hard. He doesn’t really take plays off. But what the Kings need from Domomas is for him to be more consistent with his aggression to try and score the basketball. More attack minded. Now, you don’t want to see his field goal attempts go up by too many because there’s only so many to go around, right? And you don’t want to get away from his natural desire to share the basketball. Again, the Kings would like his assists to go back up a little bit, but for the amount of money that Dom is being played, being a a over $40 million per year player, the Kings would like for him to be more of a threat to score offensively than what he is or to at least hold defenses more accountable with his ability to score. He’s not going to lead the team in scoring. I would argue if he did lead the team in scoring, the Sacramento Kings would be a very bad basketball team. That’s not the expectation. That’s not the ask. But being more aggressive, looking to score more when you have the mismatch, not always falling into that first instinct of trying to move the ball a as quickly as possible. And when you do have the ball and you are aggressive, take care of the basketball. don’t turn the ball over as much as we saw Domas do last season when he was trying to be in attack mode. There will always be a reputation of it doesn’t matter what the numbers say. It doesn’t matter what he does in the regular season, you got to go do it in the playoffs. And I have spent years on this podcast adamantly defending Demand Sabonis against that. I’m here to tell you that defense is not as strong, nor is it as desired. I have I have less of a desire to stand in Domas’s corner and fight off that criticism, which is fair to certain extents. I think it goes too far and I think it undermines a lot of the greatness that he does during the regular season. So, I’ll continue to show the respect and support and admiration for the things that Domas does well and not undermine them by saying, “Well, he’s got to do it in the playoffs.” But the last taste of Kings basketball that we had other than the summer league was Demandis Sabonis laying an absolute egg as the Sacramento Kings got embarrassed on national television on their home floor against the Dallas Mavericks team who had yet to win the lottery. And they were the laughingstock of the league because they traded away Luca Donuch, a guy that Demand Sabonis throughout his career has dominated. And Anthony Davis chewed him up and spit him out. And the Sacramento Kings limped off of their home floor with their tail between their legs to put an end to an absolutely dreadful, embarrassing season in Sacramento. Dom, the spotlight of that criticism rests firmly on his shoulders. His teammates wear some of it too, but nobody nobody should have been more ashamed by that performance than Deamont Sabonis. He has to wear that. He’s going to carry that weight throughout all 82 games of this regular season, no matter what he does during those 82 games. And it’s only going to get louder when the Kings get either back into the plan or into the playoffs themselves. We’re going to talk about it all season long. It’s the reality of the situation. But during the regular season, the Kings again need that scoring aggression from him consistently. And the Kings need to get back to playing through him. He is one of very few bigs that can do what he does, right? It’s it’s pretty much him and Nicola Joic at the top of that mountain. Now, Joic is of course significantly better. Joic is a multi-time MVP and will go down as one of the best basketball players statistically ever to play. But the Kings were at their best and it’s not a coincidence when they played through Damontis Sabonis. And that includes his fellow stars, the other two guys in this big three that we’re going to talk about. It blows my mind and frustrates me to no end when I go back and I remember or I see the videos and the stories and the excitement and the hype around Demand Sabonis and Demard Rozan working out together at USC last off season only to never see them play a twoman game together more than a handful of times throughout the course of the entire season. It made no sense then. It makes no sense now. play through Demand Sabonis. Have your stars establish their twoman games together. That includes Zack Lavine, too. You want to see Lavine and Domas playing through and off of each other. And D Rozan and Sabonis as well. If the Kings don’t do that, that’s not just a failure on Domas, Lavine, and D Rozan. That’s a massive failure on Doug Christie and the Sacramento Kings offense. They are they have a weapon in front of them that very few teams have and they’re choosing not to load it and use it. It’s foolish. It’s silly. And I don’t know why the Kings got away from it last year. They need to get back to it this year. And finally, in terms of leadership, and there’s going to be an an ask of leadership from all three of these guys. But in terms of leadership, help establish the culture, right? If the e if the expectation is physicality, okay, we know that Domas can bring the physicality, but lead by example when it comes to the things that Doug Christie and Scott Perry need or are trying to establish here. Be that leader by example. Go out and play with physicality on the defensive end, even if you’re not a rim protector. That’s just one example, but but lead this team in establishing the culture. And who knows if Dom is going to be around long enough for that culture to truly take shape or not. But as of now, in terms of contract, he’s here for the long haul. So establish that culture. You have a good relationship with Doug Christie, use it. And we’ll see how that plays out. All right. We still got to talk about Zack Lavine. Got to talk about Demar D Rozan too. That’s all still coming here on Locked on Kings. Before that though, I want to let you know that today’s episode of the Locked on Kings podcast is brought to you by Open Phone. All right, let’s talk about Zack Lavine. And actually, at the very end of this segment to wrap up the Lavine conversation, we’re going to talk about the cloud of negativity that is perpetually going to follow Lavine here in Sacramento and why it has absolutely nothing to do with him. I think it’s important to talk about and acknowledge and we will get to that. But in terms of expectations for Zack Lavine, he’s coming off of an incredibly efficient offensive season. He averaged 23 points per game throughout the entire season. What’s a little bit concerning is that his scoring averages dropped by two points per game when he went from Chicago to Sacramento. Now, I know there was nobody in Chicago that was taking as many shots and had the ball in their hands as much as Demar De Rozan does. Lavine and D Rozan very familiar with each other from their time together in Chicago so they can work it out. But Lavine got more opportunity was the absolute bonafide guy in Chicago and when he came here to Sacramento he had to kind of share those responsibilities a little bit more with D Rozan and with Sabonis and the other offensive pieces that the Sacramento Kings had. Zack Lavine shot 51% from the field, 44% from three-point range and 82% from the free throw line. phenomenal shooting splits, averaged 16 field goal attempts per game and seven three-point attempts per game. Again, he averaged seven three-point attempts per game and shot 44% from three. Those are phenomenal elite numbers. And the best number for Zack Lavine, he played in 74 games last season after playing in just 23 games the season before that. Health has always been something to monitor for Zack Lavine. and the Kings cross their fingers we’ll get a healthy Zack Lavine for the majority of this coming season. Here’s the expectation for Zack Lavine. You’re the guy. You’re the dude. Now, we could argue whether or not the Sacramento Kings should be or will be that good of a team if Zack Lavine is their number one, but Zack Lavine is their number one. On offense, you are the dude, so act like it and be the dude. That doesn’t mean that you’re being so selfish to the point where Demar de Rozan and and Demata Sabonis and everybody else is fading into the background and watching while you go 1v5 every single game. That’s not what I’m talking about. But you are going to be the tip of the spear, for lack of a better term, an overused cliche of this Sacramento Kings offense. And like I laid out in the last podcast, as much as Doug Christie is a defensive guy and the Kings would like to improve on the defensive end, offensively, this is going to be the bread and butter of this team, it’s the way this roster is constructed. It’s been the same thing over the last three seasons. Offense is how if this team even wants to sniff the playoffs, they have to do it on the offensive side of the ball. And Zack Lavine has to be the guy of this offense. The most frustrating times when Zack Lavine was playing for the Sacramento Kings last season, again, only the final third of the year, only for a couple months, a month or two, was when Lavine was too passive. And I understand Doug Christie talked a lot a lot about Lavine was trying to be a good teammate, right? He’s coming into Sacramento coming into this already chaotic situation and he doesn’t just say, “Give me the basketball. I’m going to shoot the ball 20 times.” He was trying to make the right pass, trying to get his teammates involved, trying to reaclimate himself playing next to Demard Rosen. Those are all great things, but Zach, if you’re not scoring, you’re not doing anything else. And you’re such an elite scorer. That is what you’re paid nearly $50 million to do. So, go out and do it more and better than anybody else on this roster. That is the expectation for Zack Lavine. And then on the defensive end, because we know Zack is not known for the defense and would never really be considered a good defender, just give effort towards the team expectation. If the expectation is on defense, we’re going to play with a physicality and play with an attitude. We’re going to play with a pride. Zack Lavine, show effort towards that. I understand that being the number one option on offense and the expectations of of scoring that I just placed upon Zack that takes a lot out of you and the Kings are going to need him primarily on the offensive side of the ball. So that means it makes it difficult to give 110% effort on the defensive side of the ball every single play. I’m not expecting that. Nobody in their right mind should expect that from Zack Lavine. But provide consistent effort towards again how the Kings are trying to play. Whatever the defensive game plan is, buy into it as much as your teammates can’t be taking plays off just because I’m the offensive juggernaut. I’m the I’m the firepower. I’m the green light on the offensive end of the ball. Hide me on defense because I’m not I’m not lifting a finger. I’m not like Start with not getting beat on every back door cut you see. just start there, right? That’s realistic defensive expectation for Zach is at least to try and be engaged in what Doug Christie and the Sacramento Kings coaching staff is trying to do and trying to establish on the defensive end of the floor. Doesn’t mean you’re all a sudden going to be a stopper. Doesn’t mean you’re going to lock anybody down on the perimeter. You’re going to get beat probably multiple times a game. It’s going to happen. You’re going to get targeted. It is what it is. You have that reputation. Teams know it. and Zack Lavine is nowhere close to alone in being an offensive specialist that struggles on the defensive end. The league is littered with them. It can work, but give effort towards whatever the expectation is. And then play with a chip on your shoulder. There is a cloud of negativity that that has and will surround Zack Lavine here in Sacramento simply because of this honest truth. Zack Lavine wearing a Kings jersey is a mistake. And the mistake has nothing to do with Zack Lavine. Let me explain. My frustrations with Lavine being a Sacramento King is that the Sacramento Kings did it to themselves. I can be mad about Zack Lavine’s contract. One, it’s not my money. And two, it was the Chicago Bulls that gave it to him. So, as much as I can be I I can be frustrated and bring up his contract, in reality, Zack got the bag. Zack got paid for the player he was. Good for him. Somebody was willing to give it to him. He signed the dotted line. I can’t turn my nose up at that by any means. But what I and many in this fan base are frustrated about when it comes to Zack Lavine being a Sacramento king is that this organization made the decision to go out and get that contract. a contract that the Chicago Bulls were desperately trying to get rid of, were trying to attach draft compensation to get rid of in the off season before that trade was made. And nobody around the league in their right mind was interested except for the Sacramento Kings. And the Kings not only willingly acquired that contract, they traded their star player, albeit disgruntled, but they traded De’Aran Fox instead of playing patient and going the long-term route, which they always should have done. And I’ve said that from the beginning. They traded their disgruntled star for that contract in a shortsighted, foolish attempt to meet this playoff mandate placed upon the organization by the same ownership group that wanted Zack Lavine here in the first place. Make no mistake about it. Everybody knows why Zack Lavine is a Sacramento king. That’s where the frustration lies. this move, unless Lavine and the Sacramento Kings shock the world and this team next season turns into a not just a playoff team, but a threat in the playoffs. A team that all of a sudden opens everybody’s eyes like, whoa, this team actually can win. Unless that happens, this move will forever be labeled a boneheaded, regretful decision by the organization here in Sacramento. And you can add it to the long list throughout the Kings history. And unfortunately, that negativity surrounds a player that had nothing to do with it. Nothing at all. All Zack Lavine did was sign the dotted line to get the best the most money that he possibly could for he and his family. And he went out and last season had statistically one of the best offensive seasons of his career. Zack Lavine is not the problem. The problem is the organization going out and getting Zack Lavine. So fans should not punish or criticize Zach in any sort of way. Even if we are frustrated that he is wearing a Kings jersey, it’s not his fault. fans should cheer and support and try to enjoy the show that Lavine is on the offensive side of the ball as much as they possibly can while also acknowledging that he should not be in a King’s jersey to begin with. And it’s a mistake by the organization to have him here in the first place. It made no sense then, makes even less sense now. And that’s the reality of the situation. So, I want Lavine, if he cares enough, if it if it fuels his fire, play with that chip on your shoulder, use it as motivation. Don’t go out and like want to flip off Kings fans or say, “F Matt George and the Locked on Kings podcast for saying such things because again, it’s not Lavine’s fault.” In fact, I give Lavine a tremendous amount of credit for being a professional and handling it as best as he could possibly handle it. The criticisms all go towards the organization and those criticisms have been steady and consistent since the moment that trade happened. Look back at the archives of the Locked on Kings podcast. You’ll find it there. And I would love nothing more than for Lavine and company to shock the world, shut me up, and have this team succeed. But I’m afraid I’ll wake up and it’ll all be a dream. All right, let’s wrap up this conversation talking about Demar De Rozan. Last season, averaged 22 points for the Sacramento Kings on 47% shooting from the field, 32% from three-point range, 85% from the free throw line. It was D Rozan’s 12th straight season averaging 20 or more points and his third straight season averaging 17 field goal attempts per game. For D Rozan, the expectation is simple. Just keep on going. Keep being you. Be that guy. He’s going to be 36 years old, I think, at the start of the season. I mean, his career is sun setting, but if he can continue to just be what he has been over again the last 12 years, 12 seasons of a averaging 20 points per game, the Kings literally cannot ask for more than that. Now, the dream scenario, the absolute dream scenario is for Demar to continue to average 20 points per game, but to do so on like 15 attempts per game instead of 17 so that he’s taking fewer shots, but he’s an efficient scoreer, still hitting that 20 point per game milestone, and those two extra shots are being distributed equally or to Keegan or to Keon or to Domas or whoever, Nick Clifford If you can have D Rozan continue to be that 20 point per game scorer, that efficient, reliable scoring option but on a little bit less of a volume. Like that’s best case scenario for the Kings. Again, I put a dream scenario because I don’t know how realistic that is. The one thing I really don’t want to see is for his field goal attempts to go up. I also want to see Demard Rozan being the mentor for this Kings roster. I don’t want it to take away from what he does on the court, but I want Demar De Rozan to be the extension of Doug Christie and Scott Perry for this organization. And Demar has been there, done that, and while he admitted last season he’s never been through anything like what the Kings went through last year, he does understand what instability is. He knows what it takes to win. He knows what it takes to build a foundation for an organization. So do that here in Sacramento. Let your legacy as a king be that you ushered in a era of greatness for this organization after you retired. I hope that he can do that by also taking guys like Nick Clifford and to still some extent Keegan Murray under his wing and helping them grow and helping them develop. On the defensive side of the ball, it’s the same as Zack Lavine. Just give effort to whatever that team game plan or identity is on the defensive side of the ball. on offense, like I talked about, get to an established twoman game with Damont Sabonis, that mid-range pick and roll, pick and pop, or just screen to create a little bit of space because we all know Demar Rosen does not need a lot of space to shoot and score at all. Establish that with Domas and keep going to it. find more often than not the right times to ISO. Whether it’s in a late game situation, the Kings need a bucket, or they ran an offensive set, things aren’t working, now there’s 10 seconds left on the shot clock. Okay, D Rozan, now get to your spot. We’ll clear out and let you go to work. But don’t be starting the isolation and dribbling the air out of the ball with 18 seconds on the shot clock. That’s something that Doug Christie and the Kings talked about last season. And finally, find your fit in the free flowing offense, too. I don’t want Demar Rose and when the Kings are moving the basketball and the ball is zipping and they’re sharing it. I don’t want Demar to just be standing in the corner watching or for him to lose his value or lose his threat on the offensive end because he’s not going one-on-one in his spot. find a way to fit in the offense when the ball is moving and then continue to be the reliable mercenary offensive scoring option from that mid-range that you’ve been your entire career and you are going to make it to the Hall of Fame because of those are the expectations that I have for the big three here in Sacramento. I want to hear your expectations. Do you agree with some of them? Disagree with some of them. Let me know on Twitter. Email me [email protected].
