Mavericks Fans Get The News They’ve Been Waiting For
Welcome into Mavericks today by chat sports everybody. My name is Jeffrey Cooperstein. Happy Sunday to you guys. Just wanted to give you guys a little bit of a Mavericks update as far as the schedule and everything that uh entails with that goes. And we are about a week away from the full 82 game schedule being released by the NBA. It’s usually right around mid August. It could be sometime this week. And of course, if that happens, we’ll keep you up to date right here on the channel. So stay subscribed and turn on those notifications so you know when the Maverick schedule is released and we’ll do a breakdown of all of the key games and anything you guys want to know about the NBA schedule. But the two games that we do know about are pretty intriguing. For the third straight season, the Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs are going to open the year. And I love this matchup. It’s obviously a very classic rivalry between the Mavericks and the Spurs. I think these two teams are pretty evenly matched up as far as where they are in the Western Conference. As far as potential contenders go, I think they’re both in the tier of they’re going to be competitive. Are they one of the top four or five teams in the West? I think that remains to be seen. I think you’re clear three teams at the top of the West are Houston, Denver, and OKC. And then I put the Mavericks and the Spurs in that next tier. So, it’s always fun to open the season against a traditional rival with the Mavs and Spurs. You love seeing Victor Webeyama. He’s supposed to be healthy coming off of his uh multiple issues that he had where he missed the rest of the season last year. And hopefully the Mavs are going to be healthy as well. Sans Kyrie Irving and Derek Lively versus Victor Wimyama has been a very fun matchup that has taken place over the last couple of seasons. and in their both of their NBA debuts. Lively outplayed Victor Webbyama in that first year when the Mavericks ended up going all the way to the NBA finals. That season started in San Antonio. I believe this one’s going to be at home. So, we’ll see San Antonio come to Dallas, but love that. Love that matchup to open up the season. And then it was also announced that the Dallas Mavericks are going to be taking on the Golden State Warriors on Christmas Day in the Bay. you. Everyone would have thought that this was going to be a Mavericks verse Lakers matchup with the whole Luca storyline, but the Mavs are going to the Bay to take on Steph and the Golden State Warriors. So, those are your two matchups that have been officially announced by the NBA. We do know that the Mavericks and the Lakers are going to do battle in the NBA Cup as well. So, we’ll get plenty of Mavs verse Luca and the Lakers storylines going forward. So, they’re going to end up playing the Golden State Warriors on Christmas. And I can’t remember the last time the Mavericks didn’t play on Christmas. I think it’s been every year since I want to say 2020, maybe 2021, that the Mavs have played on Christmas Day. And the Cooper flag uh the the Cooper flag pull gives the Mavericks enough pull to still play one of the five games on Christmas Day. So, I’m very excited to see the Mavs on Christmas. It’s always fun. That’s the West Coast game. It could be the late tip off. You could have the 9:00 p.m. start time with the Mavs and Warriors. And I love Christmas Day NBA games. You wake up, you see the Knicks play at 11:30 a.m. and you just watch all five Christmas Day games. We know the NFL has tried to hijack Christmas over the last couple of years, but I really think Christmas is the NBA’s day and I’ll be excited to watch the Mavericks play basketball. You guys let me know which matchup you are excited for down in the comment section. If you’re more excited for Mavericks versus Warriors, type GSW. If you’re more excited for Mavericks versus Spurs, type SAS down there in the comment section and give us a thumbs up icon if you haven’t already as well. Um, other offseason notes, we obviously know that the Mavericks are going to be playing uh training camp out in Vancouver as they did last year in Las Vegas. They’re going to Vancouver this summer just to get away from Dallas, to get away from the daily grind of what they’re going to be doing for the next 6 to9 months. and they’re going to spend about a week up there in Western Canada up in the Pacific Northwest before they come down here and they take on uh I believe it’s the Charlotte Hornets. They’re going to be playing at Dicki Arena. So, they’re going to be playing the first ever NBA game in Fort Worth over at Dickies. Not the first game ever they’ve played in Fort Worth, but the first one at Dickies Arena. And then they’re also going to be taking on the Lakers in Las Vegas. And they have a couple of other preseason games mixed in there as well. It’s going to be here before you know it. The Mavericks uh season is going to be in about eight weeks or so is the beginning of October or excuse me, the middle of October is when the preseason will begin. And I think this team’s expectations are kind of all over the place. There are some who think they could be a top three, even top two team in the Western Conference. There are some that think they could miss the playoffs altogether. I happen to think it’s somewhere right in the middle where if everything goes right with this squad, I do think they could end up being the four seed in the West, maybe winning 48 to 50 games, but that’s just not going to be the case more than likely because this team is going to deal with injuries during this season. And I’ve talked about it multiple times here on this channel. The injury it the injury bug is what’s going to make or break this season for the Mavericks. If Dererick Lively can play more than the 36 he did last year. If PJ Washington can play more than the 57 he did last year. If you can get Daniel Gaffford to play in more games than he did, like all of your key players have serious injury problems, including Anthony Davis and of course Kyrie Irving who’s going to miss the first half of the year, probably a little bit more than that as he recovers from his torn ACL. So, I really think that if this team can stay healthy, if they can manage the workload on these guys, you know, I hate the fact that players don’t play backtobacks. A lot of them like your star players don’t play backtobacks during the season, but you probably can’t have Anthony Davis playing in back-to-back games, and you probably don’t want Derek Lively playing in a lot of back-to-back games either. Hopefully Klay Thompson can stay pretty healthy, which he did last season as well. So, this team’s really going to have a big task on their hands as far as like managing their minutes and managing the workload and figuring out which games to play and which games to not because last season, there is no question about it, the injury crisis was a disaster for the Dallas Mavericks. And yes, the Luca trade obviously derailed the season, but they still would have been in the playin, if not the playoffs, if it weren’t for their absurd injury crisis that basically hit everybody on the team. And you obviously also brought back Adante Exom who missed 62 games last year, was limited to just 20 games. He broke his wrist multiple times and had other issues that kept him out. He’ll be a pretty valuable piece if he can stay healthy as well. So, I think all in all, this team does have good pieces and this team has the ability to be one of the better teams in the West. It’s just a matter of whether or not they can stay healthy and it’s whe whether or not that their philosophy of defensive versatility is going to translate to the league. I think the Mavericks are trying to start a trend of we’re going to play double big lineups. We’re going to be the biggest team in the NBA, which they are because right now their plan is to play Cooper Flag at starting shooting guard and move him around there. We’ll see if that works out, man. Like I think you need a little bit more shot creation than what the Mavericks have right now. Maybe D’Angelo Russell helps that when Kyrie comes back. You can play those two together. But they’re going to need a serious effort from the likes of D’Angelo Russell, Brandon Williams, Dante Exom to run the offense and create for others because right now I really don’t see it on this team. I think they’re putting a lot on Cooper Flags plate early. They’re going to see if he can be a playmaker for this squad. if he can average five five or six assists a night, if he can bring the ball up the court, if he’s able to be an offensive initiator, that’s going to be a key for Jason Kid squad this upcoming season. So, we’ll see what happens, but we do have the first two games announced with the Mavericks and and Spurs and the Mavericks and Warriors on Christmas Day. That’s going to do it for today’s show, guys. Appreciate you for tuning in to this Sunday edition of Mavericks Today by Chat Sports. We’ll see you guys soon, of course, if anything happens here on the channel. So, stay tuned. We’ll see you guys soon. I appreciate you for watching here on a Sunday.
