As always, a busy show today to begin a new week. If you missed anything from last week, we had three shows. It’s been very busy, even still into the dead zone of the offseason. And coming up later this week, the schedule is on the way, which we’ll get into a little bit later on in the podcast. But first, a segment on the latest with Trey Young and his extension negotiations and the reporting on all of that. And my friend Jake Fischer, who’s been on this show before, Jake, and I go way back. He actually had a bunch of interesting nuggets on the Steinline newsletter on Sunday that I’ll go through kind of one at a time in the order in which Jake reported them in his own piece just for consistency sake. If you want to go back and read that, I definitely would. And uh it’s a valuable resource. Mark and Jake do a very good job reporting on the Hawks. They were all over a lot of stuff this summer with Atlanta. and he led with a reality that the attention basically has shifted to Trey Young around the league after Luca Donuch and Dearon Fox got done with their extensions about a week week and a half ago now even as Young was already eligible for an extension you know a month and a half ago now maybe a little bit more than a month now early July it’s been funny for me anyway to see the increased attention on Trey just because it’s very obviously tied to there being nothing else to talk about in the NBA we are definitely in the dead zone and once Fox and Donuch got done. It’s like, oh, people kind of just realized or maybe remembered or just thought of something to talk about and it was Trey Young being still extension eligible and not having the extension. Nothing’s changed on this in five weeks since he was eligible for the extension on July 6th. So, people just kind of noticing now. I’m not putting Jake in that category. He’s been reporting on this the entire time uh along with Mark Stein. But, it’s just kind of a funny bit of minutia and I I’ve gotten a lot of questions about this. I would say more now, which makes very little sense because like this is not a new story, but there is new reporting on this. So again, I’ll go one by one here on Jake’s reporting about what I will uh have my own spin on and uh context with. So here we go with what was reported on Sunday. First, this is a quote from Jake. League sources tell me that there are no plans for Young and the Hawks to engage in extension talks this summer. End quote. Now, this is one where I would quibble a little bit with the framing on this. I think they’ve at least talked. Now, uh it’s kind of funny, you know, there’s always some back and forth on what phrases like quote engage and extension talks actually mean. Does that mean exchanging offers? What does negotiation mean? Um you know, have they talked? What have they talked about? There’s some gray area here, as we’ll get into more in a second. If both sides kind of understand where things stand right now, there might not be quote unquote like engaged in talks right now. But I do think they have talked and that by the way they I mean Trey’s representatives, agents, whatever and the hawk side. Um they’re not sitting at a table though staring each other down right now in extension talks. That’s kind of what I would say. Um I don’t think that it’s you know again we can quibble on this all day long. I think they have talked, but it’s notable to me that Jake reported that there are quote no plans for them to engage on talks. That would point to what I’ve said before, what Brian Woodhor reported maybe a week or two ago that um you know him getting the max is just not going to happen this summer, which I have also kind of stood with um even with leaving the door open cracked a little bit on that. But uh I thought that was interesting. Again, I would not fully embrace that reporting. I think it’s more like they have talked, but they’re not like maybe actively talking right now. There you go. Um, next thing from Jake, quote, “Sources say Young’s side has actually been resigned for some time to the prospect of seeing out the final guaranteed yards contract rather than securing an extension.” End quote. Now, I said this a little bit before, and again, I would I would point people back to the archives. I probably talked about Trey’s extension three or four full segments worth in the last five weeks, so I won’t repeat all of that, but I think they understand situation. By they, I mean Trey and his agent. He did change agents a while ago, moving from Clutch and Rich Paul to CIA. Jake mentioned that every once in a while, um, you know, I’ll say this, Jake mentioned that that changeover in his piece. That’s good noting by Jake. I would say people ask me every once in a while or maybe note to me every once in a while like some reference to Clutch or Rich Paul. It’s been a while since Trade’s been represented by Clutch. So, he’s with CIA now. Um, that’s notable in some ways. Um they I think they know that a full max offer is not coming. I have heard that. I’m confident that they have heard the same that I have. And they rather not talk about taking less. Like there is some negotiation that could potentially happen if the two sides could find a number that’s less than the max. But if they’re like not really itching to do that, I think kind of being resigned to playing it out for the next year does make some sense on their side. All right, this is a big one. Quote from Jake. No one is suggesting that Young is actively pushing to get out of Atlanta.” End quote. I could argue this is the most important thing of all. I will also say that there has never actually been any buzz that he wants out. So, if you’re a regular listener to the podcast, you will know this and kind of just shrug it off in the way that I did. This is not a new thing, but if you people needed to kind of see this, then I’m glad he wrote it. Um, I’ll be as clear as Jake was. I have never heard a single thing about Trey wanting out because of this of the contract stuff. I know there is always a little bit of danger and people ask me this all the time. Is there any danger in making Trey mad to where he wants out? Yes. But I think these are all human beings. I think Auntie Cle has a good feel for like people and I don’t think that’s that’s where we are. Like sure there is a little bit of risk of that I suppose if you draw a hard line and kind of be you know belligerent about it. But I would say the weird internet you know bleacher report style fake trades and screenshots can be ignored. like there’s not really anything out there about him being traded or wanting to be traded. The two sides are just kind of like moving on to the summer um and moving on to the next season, etc. Um, next thing from just just say out loud. I know that’s like a headline, but I actually was glad that Jake didn’t leave with that because it was like you don’t really need to leave with that. That’s kind of just implied and it just matter of fact. Um, next thing, quote, “The reported disappointment Young is said to be feeling about his contract status appears to stem largely from the fact that the Hawks never really broached an extension at all.” End quote. So, this references to the the reported disappointment is back to what Mark Spears said on ESPN TV about a week, week and a half ago, and that he said he heard that Trey was disappointed that the Max offer had not come to this point. As I said, I think even last week on the show and also today, I think they have talked. So maybe that’s a small disagreement that I have in the reporting that Jake has put out there. But I’m also confident again there’s not been a max offer sitting there at any point in time. Um I do understand totally if there’s dis disappointment on Trey side and that’s an important bit of nuance. And by the way, I know everyone loves that when I use the word nuance. I think it actually requires nuance. Um he has played at a max level. I said it before, I’ll say it again. I’ve outlined that even last week in comparison to De’Arren Fox. I think Trey could earnestly look in the mirror and say he is younger than De’Arren Fox and better than De’Arren Fox and it would be pretty natural for him to wonder why he doesn’t have that same offer coming from the Hawks. Without going through all of it again like I did last week, I will say the Hawks are in a different spot than the Spurs. Also, the Spurs, I think, pretty clearly committed to do this a year ago or maybe six months ago when they traded for Darren Fox. And I think that’s a bad idea to give him the full five-year max. and the Hawks don’t have to just do it because they did it basically. Um, but regardless, I think that was a bad idea to give Fox that deal. And going back to Trey, like I understand his appointment. I really do. I also think Trey is a pro. And we’ll get into that more in a second when it comes to the rest of this. Next quote from Jake. Young is confident, sources say, in his ability to lead the Hawks back to the playoffs, which could prove to be a meaningful inflection point for both Atlanta and Young himself to hold extension talks. End quote. So, from everything I’ve heard, Trey likes the Hawks and the team they have now. I think that’s very reasonable from him to think it’s the best roster the Hawks have had in about a half decade at this point and their best win best chance to win at a high level since that conference finals team which was again almost five years ago at this point. Obviously, a lot has to go right. You need Porzingis to be healthy. You need Trey to stay healthy. Honestly, you need Jaylen to be healthy. You need steps forward from guys like Dyson and Zack and Aneka. But they have real talent. the projections, these smart people than people that are smarter than I am about, you know, in Las Vegas, people that do models and all the everyone kind of points like this is a talented roster that the Hawks have. And of course, the East is very much open beyond Cleveland at the top and I would say maybe New York is kind of in trenches after after last season. After that, it’s very open and I think the Hawks could reasonably believe they have a top three team in the Eastern Conference. Whether they are or not, we’ll see. But if things go right, there’s reason to believe if you’re Trey Young that you have some confidence in your roster. And last thing on the reporting, then we’ll come back to a little bit more on this. Um, from Jake, quote, I’m told another reason for Atlanta and Young’s mutual optimism about next season, the Hawks, sorry, the strong relationship that the 26-year-old Young has forged with Quinn Snyder. End quote. This is not really new, but I’m glad Jake included it because it’s important to point out Trey really likes Quinn and Quinn really likes Trey and that does matter. Um, these are the, you know, the front office stuff matters a lot, but daytoday player and coach matters much more to the vibes than player GM or player front office does. Player ownership that stuff. It also ties something sort of ties back to something I’ve said before in the last couple of years and that Trey’s maturity and his growth as a leader, as a face of the franchise guy has been honestly cool to see, but also like notable from a team building standpoint. He’s an adult now. He’s got he’s got kids. Like he’s an adult. It is what it is. Like when he came in at 19 years old, he was immature. I think he would probably admit that now. And it was a big ask for him. But now he’s like just much more of a, you know, season pro. Um, he’s been invested in guys like Zack and guys like Dyson and Yeka, etc. He’s been doing the little things that to kind of signal that he’s bought into what the Hawks are doing. And importantly, he played the way that Quinn wanted him to play last year, which led to him leading the league in assists. And I know he didn’t shoot the ball that well, but still like, I think he played very well last year, and that should happen again. He buys it. You know, he says the right things, so does Quinn, but Trey, you know, Trey doesn’t he’s not the kind of guy that just says things to say them. Like he he will say what he thinks and he’s saying the right things about Quinn. So having buyin with the coach and the best player is a not a you know you want to have that obviously but it’s it’s an important thing to sort of organizationally and a good sign overall. So that is worth noting and you know with Quinn on board I know Trey has this rep um that’s honestly been outdated for very long now but like people make the caricature of Trey Young as like a coach killer or whatever like he’s not that. Um I know that him and Lloyd didn’t like super get along by the end but Trey and Quinn even Trey and Nate Trey and Nate were fine. Like Trey and Quinn have gotten along. He’s bought in and I think that all matters organizationally to what is going on here with the Hawks. Last minute tickets, lowest price guaranteed. All right, and a little bit more on Trey before I go into the uh schedule notes that have been out there in the last couple of days. Um I haven’t brushed this recently, but it was included in Jake’s reporting. So I wanted to bring it up now as a just a point of clarity. Um if trade does not extend this summer, and as I said last week, I’ll say it again now. My if you asked me to bet whether a deal will get done before the season, I would say will not at this point in time. doesn’t mean it won’t, but if you said pick one or the other, I would say it will not happen between now and opening night in October. If he has a great season, the Hawks win a lot, if things go really well, he could make all NBA. And by the way, one more note here, Trey can extend at any point during the season. Some of these deals that can happen um like kind of have a cut off date, like nice Daniels for instance, he could extend until October and then if he doesn’t, there’s a deadline and then he can’t sign another deal until July 1st. Trey could sign an extension on November 1st, December 1st, January 1st, etc., etc., all the way through the season and never hit free agency if he doesn’t want to. So, keep that in mind. Anyway, he can make all NBA this year. That’s realistic. I’m not saying I would project it, but between the game minimums where Trey is, if they actually win more, you get more respect as best player, all those things. If he makes all NBA this year, he’d be eligible for a five-year deal that can be worth more than $300 million at the absolute max supermax level. It is not an automatic trigger. Keep that in mind. So, I don’t think he’d actually get the full 5year, 340, whatever it’s going to be, but he is eligible for that if he makes AllNBA this year and does not sign a session. That does give them some extra wiggle room. I’ve said this before, I’ll say it again. It’s not as if Trey is definitely going to leave if he doesn’t sign an extension. I’ve seen that framed that way many times, like I don’t agree with it at all. And by the way, that’s just not the reality of the situation. Yes, there is always, always, always risk if a player gets to free agency that he might leave. That is definitely the case. With that said, the Hawks can pay him more than anybody else can pay him. They have his birth rights. They can give him bigger raises. Um, he has incentive to be here. All that stuff. Um, my projection and my last thing I’ll say about this for now is that Trey is Trey staying in Atlanta beyond this year is the most likely outcome by a pretty good size margin I think. Again, if he doesn’t extend, there is a world in which he leaves. That can’t be ignored. That’s a thing. With that said, I would still project something to get done even if he doesn’t extend it. If he’s a free agent, um, the Hawks still have all those all those kind of hammers with bird rights and all the extra money. He likes Atlanta. They’ve built the team around him in a way that makes um like he he kind of makes it all go offensively. That doesn’t mean the Hawks have to give him anything he wants. I’ve not said that. There is nuance here. But I think he makes it all work. And they kind of built things maybe not fully around him in the way, but like he definitely is the key piece of the offense. And I think Trey also understands there’s some inherent value in being the best player and the franchise player in a big city in a big market and being a one team guy where like this is his team his whole career. Now, obviously, he may not stay his old career. Certainly, that’s, you know, that’s very rare that guys do that. I can count on probably one hand like these star level players that stay on this on their team their entire career. Duncan, Durk, Kobe, like there’s a few, but those guys are more rare than they are that as far anything else. But still, he can kind of do that if he wants to. And you know, it’s uh I’ve said it before as well, but it isn’t as if and part of the reason why the Hawks have some maybe not leverage is the right word, why it makes sense for the Hawks to consider not giving him the Max right now. um is that when there have been inklings of like trade stuff in the last couple years, which has not happened this summer by the way, but I’m talking about last year, maybe the year before that, um when there was the Dejante Trey thing, there was not a hugely robust market for Trey in trade. And you look around the league, like trying to find like the team that’s going to give him the max this summer that’s not the Hawks is not easy. Like it’s not impossible, but like there’s some factors in play here. But all that said, the Hawks give them the most money they want to. I think again my projection as the headliner of all of this is that even if I would project an extension does not get done before October I still believe the most likely scenario by a pretty decent margin is that Trey will still be on the team in 26 27 etc. Um we will see and again I wasn’t even going to do this honestly but shouts to Jake my guy I got about 50 questions like literally 50 questions in a couple hours after that reporting dropped on Sunday. So, uh, obviously Stein and Jake are making the rounds and it became a necessity kind to kind of like sift through it, um, dispel some inaccurate, um, aggregation that was out there, all that stuff. So, read the piece. Important to read the piece. I don’t I did not read the whole thing to you, but I wanted to kind of go through point by point of the big stuff. And there we are on that. All right. Some NBA schedule stuff. All indications. In fact, it’s now been officially announced that the NBA schedule in full is coming later this week. In fact, it’s coming on Thursday. Over the weekend, Christmas Day and opening night schedules came out. Well, they were leaked anyway. They weren’t announced, but they were reported by Shams, and I’m sure he got that from a reputable source. Interestingly, only one of the five games on Christmas Day, the showcase day of the league, features any team from the Eastern Conference. Um, neither of the two opening night games have a team from the Eastern Conference. Um, I was kind of surprised by that because just the way the league generally operates, but it also makes sense. The East is wide open and some of the teams that you would project to go on Christmas, for instance, like the Celtics are going to be way down this year. Um, Indiana as a reigning conference champion would have probably been on Christmas normally, but without Hallebertton and Turner, it’s like the league’s not going to just put you on Christmas for fun. Like, it is what it is. So, opening night is Rockets Thunder and Warriors Lakers. Obviously KD going to Oklahoma City for ring night’s kind of interesting, but Houston has real buzz. And then Warriors Lakers, two big brands. It is what it is. Christmas. The only East game is Cavs at Knicks. I was actually asked to do like a totally blind guess projection of these games for fans sited like two weeks ago. And I thought, and I said that in in the piece, like they would at least probably do two East games, but they didn’t. In fact, they didn’t even do an extra East team anywhere. There are eight West teams and two East teams playing on Christmas. I also got a mailbag question from somebody um before this came out. I think it was last week that I didn’t answer on the show, but basically it was like if I thought the Hawks had a chance at a Christmas game, and I never really did. Um, for some background, the Hawks not playing on Christmas, at least they didn’t play on Christmas from 1989 until 2021. So that’s 20 something years. They got a game finally that year after they made the conference finals with Trey and Collins and all that stuff. They played at MSG against the Knicks that season. But that was the year, if you forgot this, that like half the league had COVID. The Hawks were battered at times that year roster-wise. And the Hawks had a hilariously bad roster for that Christmas game. Not their fault. Just guys were sick and hurt, etc. No Trey, no Hunter, no Herder, no Galinari. Couple other guys were out in that game. The Hawks played a Christmas Day game and the following players took the floor. They weren’t in uniform, were on the court for minutes in the game. Skyler Mays, Gorgi Jen, Lance Stevenson, Malcolm Hill, and Cat Barber. You have to be a total Hawk sicko to even remember that Cat Barber and Malcolm Hill were on the team. Lance Stevenson as well. So like that’s not why they got that they were kind of banished forever from Christmas. They’re not. But the league tends to put in big brands basically on Christmas. Look, I will say this. If the Hawks win and hit their kind of ceiling levels this year, they might be on Christmas next year. That is very possible to me. But I was never thinking they were going to be on the on the table this year and they’re not. So, one thing I will say is that it’s easier for Hawks fans, which it should be probably, to take this. Um, if they had put Orlando on Christmas, Hawks fans would have been mad and I think justifiably so. But Cleveland won 60 plus games last year. The Knicks are the Knicks. Big brand, good team, etc. Like, it makes sense. And the all the West teams that are playing, Spurs, Thunder, Rockets, Lakers. The only team that I think is like the Hawks would have a gripe against would be the Mavericks, but they do have Cooper Flag who is very famous already. So, Mavs, Warriors, Wolves, Nuggets, like it makes sense. Like, it’s definitely West focused, but there you go. Um, one more thing on the schedule. Um, it will come out later on this week. Again, last year it was 3 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday. Leak has not said what time it’s coming out yet, but I would I would guess that’s probably the time. Um, but Thursday is the day. And as far as the preseason exhibition schedule is concerned for the Hawks, that has not been announced yet. Usually, it’s comes out a little bit beforehand, but it hasn’t yet. But there are three games we know for the Hawks, like not even leaked, that we know because other teams have announced them so far. October 6th in Houston, October 11th in Memphis, October 16th at home against Houston. Those three games are announced preseason wise. Um I’m not sure why they’re playing Houston twice, but they are. And there you go. And as usual, I will have a schedule deep dive probably on Thursday evening once the schedule is out. All right, more to come on the podcast in just one moment. All right, and a quick mailbag question on some future finances from Stuart who says, “What you’ve said makes sense on some of the reasons that the Hawks might not want to give Trey the Max.” Now, I have a practical question. If they did give him the Max extension, how would that impact the team’s salary for next season? And what about after next season? So what I will first say is that everything is tied together financially. So it’s not just Trey’s deal. Like you got Dyson’s deal, you got Porzingis. Like there’s some uncertainty beyond just Trey. But for one, if Trey got the max, he’d be getting about 50 million for next year. Like which is actually very similar to his player option. Keep that in mind. So, if you just put put if you put that number on the books roughly along with everybody else under contract already for the Hawks, you’d be in like the 141 142 range in committed salaries for 10 players for next year. That’s not too bad given that the tax projection is like $200 million. But keep that in mind that does not include anything for Dyson Daniels, Porzingis, or even to a less valuable extent nothing for Lucard. So basically, I would say Dyson and pretty obvious much more important. But Dyson’s extension negotiations are ongoing. I expect that to not get done if it does until October or maybe not at all. But I think it’s safe to say he’s going to get 20 plus million if he does extend. Porzingis would get a lot of money if he stays around. Um again, Porzingis is also extension eligible. I’m not hearing anything about that right now. But without going crazy into the fake money world, maybe they can kind of squeeze those guys both in and stay under the tax next year if it is a hard red line. And look, I I always say this, the tax doesn’t have to be a red line. The Hawks have just treated like it would. And so unless unless they change that opinion, my projection is always going to be red line on the tax. Eventually, they will probably go over it out of necessity if things go well. If they win 50 games this year, it’s going to be really hard for Tony wrestler to justify not paying the tax. It just will. But they haven’t gotten there yet. There you go. So, as far as how Trey’s max deal would impact next season, it wouldn’t change that much because again, he’s already kind of pretty close to what he would have been owed on a player option and really only like 4 million more than he makes right now. So, like the short term is not that big of a deal for Trey. The real impact of a Trey Max would be beyond next season. So obviously it depends some on Dyson and Porzingis, but the real crunch would be in 2028. So that’s that first part. I answer that part first part of the question. Now the future like the kind of what about after that 2028 would be like the first time when you can kind of see the cliff for the Hawks financially with their current spending because that summer um presumably you would have kept Dyson Porzingis. We’ll see. But um presuming a Trey Max and a Dyson extension 2028 you have a Kong hitting free agency, Alexander Walker has a player option that he can decline free agency and Reese hits free agency all at the same time. So that is kind of the big circle like hey future planning wise if you’re a cap nerd that’s the year 2028 where it’s like whoa um things might get dicey and they won’t be able to keep everybody at least they don’t they don’t want to pay a bunch of money and that again this presumes that everything’s going well you’re trying to keep things together etc. But if you give Trey the max ahead of time, he’d be making like 58 million that year, you throw that on the books with Jaylen right now. The only player, by the way, on the Hawks roster with guaranteed money in 2829 is Jaylen. He’s the only guy. Now, I will say if you start adding in Trey, you start adding in Risha, who I’m sure they’ll probably keep, um Alexander Walker, if he stays around Akong Woo, if he stays around Ace Newell, Dyson Daniels, etc., etc., it gets to be a lot in a hurry. So, what I will say for the 500th time this summer about Trey is that the decision on Trey’s extension from the team side has very very little to do with next season or even really the year after, especially not for next season. It’s really about the impact for 2028, 2029, 2030. And I know that seems like a long time from now, but you’re not operating with honestly it’s very analytical, very practical like you are not operating for this season. It’s about the the big picture, the long term. doesn’t mean you can’t go in for this year, but it does mean that they’re going to consider the long term as well. I’ll probably do a variation of the same question later this summer with regard to Dyson and his impact. He’s going to make less than Trey, obviously, but how much they commit to him will definitely impact other stuff. That’s just the reality of the situation. That’s why it matters that if you get Dyson for $23 million a year versus $30 million a year, that stuff matters on the margins. Um, Porzingis, again, exception eligible as well. I’ve heard nothing about that. But if things go well this year, he makes $30 million. Like I don’t know if he’s going to keep making that much money. But he’s that kind of player if he’s healthy. So if he stays healthy, if you want to keep him, that will cost money. He’s he’s not going to take $10 million. Like it’s going to take some money to keep him. So all that said, there’s a lot of stuff in the air, a lot of balls in the air, a lot of uncertainty, but they have a clean cap sheet right now. There’s no bad money on the deal on the books right now. As an always says, they have optionality with their roster. But if you give Trey the full max, the end of that contract might might be dicey. Dyson’s negotiations have to matter. Porzingises have to matter. And again, 2028, you’re talking about Nikquil, you’re talking about Risha. It’s a long time from now. But to answer the question, the short term is not is not the concern with Trey making the max. It is not the concern. I firmly believe Trey Young could be worth the max next year, probably even the year after that. It’s the end of it. It’s it’s year three and especially year four where it gets where he’s making more and more and more and probably getting a little bit worse given the aging curve. So keep that in mind. 1. But but but…Trae posted a video on instagram a few days ago with the song “My Last” playing in the background….👀👀👀🤔🤔🤔🤔

  2. I really like the fact that this is a contract year for TRAE……he will be motivated to win that championship $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!!!!
TRAE/PORZ/LUKE/NAW/JJ/OO….want to win now….the future is NOW….ONSI at the Feb deadline will have TONS of AMMO!!!! NOW is the time!!!! In the GETTABLE EAST……Pacers with a healthy Hali…may have pulled it off!!! WHY not us!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. I have to admit…that I'm interested in watching the various Trae-less line-ups that Quin throws out there this year. LOTS of OPTIONS!!! Hawks have SERIOUS depth = DANGEROUS!!!

  4. Hawks will win 50 plus this year! The trade deadline will see us trading for a player of consequence!!! We have the AMMO!!!!!!!!

  5. Hey Brad I know you said in a recent pod you trust the reporting of the Caleb signing … but with it being a month and no official announcement almost do you think something could be happening behind the scenes?

  6. Being Portuguese, I have managed to witness Hawks legend Cat Barber's greatness domestically for the past two seasons. One can only hope Chaundee Brown graces our courts next.

  7. If we give trae the max, he's going to demand a trade eventually when we can't build a good enough team around him

  8. A Max today is considerably cheaper than a Super Max tomorrow after we have a successful season and Trae makes all NBA.

Make it a 3 year Max similar to Luka if you want some flexibility.

  9. Appreciate you painting a big picture for the fans in regards to team money… I know when I first became a fan, I would immediately say pay the man!… however, thanks to your explanation. I’m understanding a lot more of what goes on in the background. With Trae being my favorite player, I am on the side of not giving him the max and leaving that option open for the future to pay more and see how he does with this group he has this season!
