Spurs Starters That Are Locks… If Any
What’s going on everyone? So, I want to kind of talk about just the Spurs lineup rotation, kind of like what positions are locked, right? Like, and of course, I want to hear your guys’ thoughts and opinions down in the comments as well, cuz I’m sure we all kind of have our our perspectives on like who should start and how they should start it and whatnot. And there are a lot of like different mix and matches as far as like what the Spurs can produce out there. And I do think Mitch Johnson, I do think he will kind of like have different rotations like especially early on like especially a team this young might as well try to experiment some stuff. So maybe you are going one night with a a Fox, a a Castle, a Harper, a Wimi, and a Sohan or something like that. Just kind of get a look at it and just see how does this look, right? Or or even if it’s not starting, right? Because you do want to try to keep your starters at least intact as much as possible. Um, but just the rotations in general, like you can throw out different lineups, different looks. Do something with like a Wimi, Sohan, Harrison Barnes, um, you know, maybe like a Julian Champagany and a Dear and Fox. Have like, you know, some real size out there. You have three 68 guys plus Victor Womenyama and just have that switchability, just defend, you know, switching one through five, kind of have that switchable defense that you’re seeing a lot of in today’s NBA and stuff. But there’s really only two spots that I think are an absolute lock, right? And those are the obvious ones. Darren Fox as your point guard, Victor Womenyama as your center, right? Or I I would I wouldn’t even go as far as say center, just position locked regard like those are two of your starting five. From there, I do think it’s very mix and match. Now, the the immediate kind of almost obvious one would be uh a Devin Vel, right? Because he’s kind of the veteran guy. He’s the guy you’re paying $27 million a year, right? He’s the guy that you you would it’d be hard to justify bringing him off the bench. But also, is that what’s best for the team, right? Like, however, if I had to like kind of like, you know, hey Tyler, who do you think that they probably go with Deon Vel as the as the starter at the the two or the three? Um, so I think maybe you could argue three guys, but even then I think, you know, it depends like to me it really depends on the style in which they want to play, right? You think with De’aran Fox, he wants to create that dribble penetration. He wants to apply that rim pressure, kind of kick out to various shooters, right? Wimby wants to spread out, knock down, shoot eight threes a game, right? Like, so you you kind of want this almost like five out offense, right? Alongside De’aran Fox. So that’s where like Stfan Castle is does he make sense in the starting unit, right? Because like the the the five that kind of jumps out to me in like my head is like okay you’re going to go Fox Castle Vel and then either a Harrison Barnes or Sohan and a Victor Women right but I actually think that there is an argument to be made of just going like go like Fox right go Fox with like um you know like a Devin Vel maybe at the two and have that shooting with like a Harrison Barnes and like a Julian Champagany, right? To kind of go that five wide, right, to where you know you again you have basically three 68 guys or or I guess two 65 guy and then two 68 guys and Julian Champagne and and Harrison Barnes kind of like that especially if Julian Champagne can continue to knock down the three ball with the consistency that we’ve seen him do. Right. So now you have Darren Fox who can operate, do his thing, and then you have Harrison Barnes and and Julian Champany out on the perimeter as your kind of knock down three-point shooters, your kind of three and D guys. And then Deon Vel can also do the same thing. Knock down the three ball, right? So I kind of look at that lineup as that might be the best and most balanced starting unit. For me personally, I think any starting unit should probably have Harrison Barnes in it. I just like Jeremy Sohan would be great for the defensive versatility, right? Rebounding, kind of that Swiss Army knife type guy, but I just I think with Darren Fox with Victor Wimyama, those are your two kind of locks, right? I think you need to have if you’re trying to win games, right? Like what again that’s this is where it falls into like what are the what are the Spurs really looking to do this season? And I think you’re going to find out pretty quick like are they trying to win as many games as possible this year or are they trying to focus on development? Right? Because those are two very different things. Yes, you can do both over the course of the season. But, you know, if you’re leaning heavily into development, you’re probably not winning as many games as you are going like the Vetera because if you’re trying to win as many games as possible, then I think you need to have Harrison Barnes and I think you have Devin Vel out there cuz those are arguably probably your two best three-point shooters, right? Both guys can create a little bit for themselves, create a little bit for others, right? Like they can both kind of be versatile in that regard. And then that’s where I’d probably lean towards like I said a Julian Champagany just for the the three andd floor spacing cuz then beyond that it’s like okay well you know Jeremy Sohan doesn’t give you the floor spacing. You know Stefan Castle doesn’t give that to you either. Dylan Harper based on what we saw in college and in summer league doesn’t give you that either. You start going down the list of guys and it’s like okay well who is that right now? You could go and the reason I said maybe you don’t go with Wimi at the at the five, right? Like what if you were to move Wimi to the four, which I am a fan of. I’m a big fan because Wimi doesn’t want to play back to the bat. He doesn’t want to be around the rim. He wants to be more Kevin Durant than Hakee, right? He wants to take eight threes a game and jack up shots and do all that stuff. He doesn’t want to, you know, you know, be on the block, lock it out, and then just going to work, right? he wants to to hang out on the perimeter and jack up three. So to me, it’d be nice to have maybe like a Luke Cornet down there or, you know, if you want to kind of go the five wide route, then you can go with like a Kelly Olen, right? And I mean, you could even have Kelly Olen as your as your four or whatever, right? Like, but have another big out there that can help rebound, you know, when when you’re running actions to where Wimi is going to get the kind of, you know, the pick and pop action, right? You could maybe have Kelly Olen or Luke Cornet kind of, you know, hit the hit the corner to go get the rebound, right? Like you could you could mix and match and do different things. And I do think to an extent it’ll be it’ll vary based on opponents and matchups, right? Like let’s say you’re going up against OKC and they’re running Hartinstein and and Cadet. There’s an argument to go Luke Cornet to match up with Hartinstein. I like that matchup. And then go with Wimi against Chat again. like that matchup, right? So, I do think that there are variables, but like, you know, if you’re playing the the Warriors and they got like Draymond at the five, then yeah, put Wimi at the at the five and then, you know, Harrison Barnes at the four, then Champagne or something like that at the three, right? I just again I think it’ll really boil down to kind of what what are the Spurs looking to do because I mean if they’re looking to just develop this year then yeah then just go you know ca you know with Castle in the starting unit and whatnot. I I don’t like you can still win games with Castle but I just I think about like the the lack of floor spacing. Darren Fox isn’t this like great three-point shooter. He can be kind of streaky. Wimby can be very streaky. like so put those two guys put as much shooting around them in spacing especially with the way that De’ar and Fox likes to play. It’s kind of my thoughts in that regard. But anyway, as always, this is a discussion. I pass a question on you. Let me know your thoughts and opinions down in the comments. The San Antonio Spurs have likely De’Aaron Fox and Victor Wembanyama as the only 2 players locked into the starting unit. Spurs Fans have several needs still but ultimately whats the starting 5.

If the Spurs want to win this season, the starting lineup should be : Fox – Vassell – Barnes – Olynyk – Wembanyama.
At the SG spot, Vassell is by far the most efficient player (in his rookie season, Castle is -9% less inefficient than the NBA average, which is complely standard for a young primary ball handler but if he is taking high volume, it will of course affect the results).
Due to his very average rebounding skills, Barnes is definitely more a SF than a PF. But he is our best catch&shooter and elite in the corners.
Olynyk is not a great defender but a good rebounder. Offensively he is a >40% in catch&shoot and his connecting passing is very underrated.
This lineup is bringing the best spacing to Fox and Wembanyama and should offer a very positive netrating.
Against the two big lineups (Houston, Memphis, Miami, OKC,…), I would prefer that Wemby would start at PF and Kornet would replace Olynyk to strentghten the defense.
But if the Spurs management wants to prioritize the development, the starting lineup should be Fox – Castle – Harper – Sochan – Wembanyama.
I definitely hate this lineup because if it should be defensively performant, offensively two non-shooters (<30% in catch&shoot) are on the court at the same time. The spacing will be terrible and the frequency and the efficiency at the rim will collapse.
The lineup Fox – Castle – Harper – Bryant – Wembanyama seems to be more balanced. Harper, Bryant and Wemby should be great catch&shooter this season. The spacing for Fox and Castle would be optimal.
The truth is surely in between…
Id say HB is a lock…started all 82 games last season. Folks seem to be quick to forget about Barnes. Hes been a starter his entire career. Stabilizes the offense and he doesn't need the ball in his hands. Will hit the open 3 and play mistake free. Hes not flashy but stable, hes exactly what the Spurs need in the starting lineup
Do you start off with a defensive lineup or an offensive lineup? I always felt like it depends what opponent your playing.
Mavericks have a big front court so what would be the best lineup to start out with?
