🚨MAJOR REPORT: Miami Heat Work Out FORMER 1st Round Pick! Heat News
We got some interesting news to break down here on the Heat Report by Chat Sports. I am your host Nick Rolloff for Miami looking to add to its roster and they are working out a former firstround pick. Now, if you do not have Twitter, you might not know who this is. If you do have social media, you would know because it’s been making its rounds. Also, make sure you follow me on social media, nick_rolloff. But the Heat are working out the former first round pick, Kai Jones, which is a very fascinating player due to his rocky three years in the NBA, if you want to call it that. But this would be a fascinating pickup for the Miami Heat considering that he is very, very, very athletic. One of the more athletic players in the NBA, a lottery kind of talent. He didn’t go in the lottery, but you see why he had so much buzz coming out of Texas. And we know that the Heat need to add to this roster in subcapacity. So adding a player like Kai Jones would certainly intrigue me. And if the Heat ultimately signed Kai Jones this week, we will have you covered with a video as we do have you covered with every breaking news story around the Miami Heat. Subscribe today for the top coverage on the Heat on YouTube. All right, but we let’s start with the Heat roster and kind of where it stands right now before we fully break down Kai Jones more. The Heat do not have many roster spots open in terms of their standard contracts. They have 14 standard contracts, which means they do have one available, but you get extra spots for the preseason. Miami currently has one two-way slot available. Kai Jones is not eligible for a two-way contract, so that would not happen there. But they do have four preseason spots open, which can be camp invites for anyone. And as we have consistently talked about with where the Heat roster currently stands, there is a massive glaring hole. When you look at this team, the wing depth, it’s there. The guard depth, if Yakonis gets PT, is there. One piece of depth that is not there is the front court. There just isn’t a lot of big men on this roster. You have Khal Wear, you have Bamead Abio. Well, and that’s it. It’s not like you can play Nicole Yoic at the five. You really don’t have anybody else that can play the four unless you’re going Haywood Highmith or Simone Fonteio small ball for which I want to eliminate most of the small ball stuff if we’re going to be honest. It can work when it’s a Yovic and wear Yovic and Bam, but it can’t really work with anybody else if we’re going to be honest because then we’re just undersized in the front court in total. So, if you add another big man that can be in rotation, that would be very beneficial. Now, I don’t know if it would be Kai Jones to get a standard contract, but let’s at least talk about the player and his career. I mentioned he was 19th overall pick in 2021 by the Charlotte Hornets out of Texas. And well, his career went off the rails a little bit. I don’t want to be mean, and maybe this is mean. I don’t know. He went a little psycho on social media in 2023. He did. He was on multiple Instagram lives. He was sweating, talking about nonsense, saying he was the best player in the league. And like, you don’t want to speculate, but the entire world thought this guy was high on drugs every night. And then he requested a trade from the Charlotte Hornets. and it ultimately came to a point where he was waved before the 2023 season in October. He ultimately missed that entire season, but did return to the NBA/GLeague for this past year, spending time with the Los Angeles Clippers and the Dallas Mavericks. And I’ll be honest, folks, he was sneaky good last season when you look at what he did for the Mavericks. The Clippers numbers were nothing really that is going to make you go, “Wow.” But in the final like 12 games of the season, the final three, four weeks of the year when the Mavericks were basically tanking, Kai Jones got a lot of run. And you see his numbers. He was one of their main contributors in their front court. He played more than half of the game on average, giving you 11 points and six rebounds a night. And he’s not someone that is going to wow you with his offensive game in the low post with footwork. This guy is a rebounder. He is a rim runner and he is someone that can clean up misses on the offensive glass or be the beneficiary on a potential dribble drive from one of your guys, lob or drop off to Jones. He’s got a very twitchy jump ability to where he gets off the floor quickly. He’s explosive. So, when you think about Kai Jones, the thing that I think about the most when you think about on the court Kai Jones is how athletic and how vertically gifted he can be. and he was a former firstround pick. So, it makes it a little bit intriguing if the Heat could get their hands on him due to the Heat developmental staff being among the best in the entire NBA. So, pin comment on today’s show. Should the Heat sign Kai Jones to a preseason roster spot to a training camp invite? Let me know your thoughts. Type S for sign or type P for pass. I would I would be typing my S for signs. one because Miami needs big men on this roster and they’ll certainly need it in training camp and preeason when they need even more depth apart this group because you’re not going to play wear and bam 30 minutes a night in the NBA preeason. But there is no downside because if he goes a little bit psycho again and you don’t like his fit in your locker room, well guess what? It’s a preseason roster spot. You can just kick him out the door and wipe your hands clean. But if he’s able to stay in the right mindset and the Heat developmental staff gets the best out of him, well, you’re getting a very athletic big man that could potentially be a force on the glass as well as a nice defensive piece. And we know this Heat organization likes to take flyers at this point in the off season. Just take it back over the past couple seasons. The Miami Heat have brought in Josh Christopher, a former first round pick. They gave him a two-way. He was on a two-way last season. Now, he’s not this year, but we know that they brought in RJ Hampton a couple years ago in 2023. Gave him a two-way deal after having him on the preseason roster. They did the same thing with Nier Little. Now, he did not get a two-way contract from Miami, but another former first round pick that the Heat worked out and then ultimately signed to their preseason roster to just get more looks and give them more opportunities. something Miami clearly likes to do with former first round picks. But there is another weird addition to the story. Barry Jackson this morning talking about Kai Jones, reporting that the Heat are going to keep him in Miami at the Casayiah Center through Thursday as they continue kicking the tires on him. He’s not eligible for two-way as we mentioned. Miami could give him the 15th standard contract or just give him a camp invite. Now, there was also a report out there that the Heat won’t go further into the luxury tax to add Kai Jones on a standard deal, which we’ll see if he gets signed and performs well in camp if that remains the same. Um, but we know Miami wants to get underneath that luxury tax. They’re $1.4 million above it. They have from now until the end of April or I guess February to get underneath the luxury tax. But quickly on this, this is as odd as I’ve ever seen when it comes to keeping Kai Jones in Miami through Thursday. Chris Haynes reported they’re working him out on Monday. And then Barry said he’s going to be there Tuesday, Wednesday through Thursday. So that is now one, two, three and a half days of him being in Miami with his potential history of mindset and drug maybe. I don’t know. There could be a possibility here where Miami is ultimately saying, “Kai, if you can stay in Miami for four straight days, keep your head on straight and come to the building and work out and give us a good workout for four straight days, we will bring you in.” That’s kind of what it feels like. I just haven’t seen a team keep a player in their building for three plus days while working them out. That’s as odd as I’ve ever seen. And I’m just assuming, so I could be way off base here. Sorry if I am, but it feels like that’s what Miami is ultimately doing here. More to come here in just a second, but take advantage of this awesome Heat hoodie sale. $15 off when you go to chatsports.com/miah hoodie sale. Links in the description and comments of today’s video. Just went on sale yesterday, so a lot of sizes still in stock. Don’t know how long that will ultimately last. Grab yours now. One more time, description and comments is where you can find the link. I also do want to make this little note here. There’s a lot of interesting reports about Kai Jones potentially leaving the NBA. There are rumors and reports out there that a team that goes by Vertus Bologni Bolognia. Close enough. I’m not really good with my Italian. Listen, I’m Italian. And I would like to be more well-versed in that regard of the language, but I’m just not someone who knows about the European culture. I’m sorry. I live in the United States. I just live here. I’m I call it I don’t know. Sorry. All right. Back on track here. The point is if the Heat don’t sign him this week, it feels like he might sign with a team overseas. We’ve seen a couple players already join overseas teams like Lonnie Walker. He’s left the NBA to go play with some European teams. Maybe Kai Jones does the same thing, but we know it’s most people’s preference to play in the NBA. So, I believe that Kai would prefer to sign with Miami at least on a training camp preseason invite type of move rather than go overseas because that overseas offer will probably stay in for a long time. So, we’ll see. But, there is another option potentially for Kai Jones. But, I’ll say this, I feel like they’re going to sign. Like, I really do. Like, if you keep someone in your building for four days, there’s got to be an end goal. And like I mentioned, if Kai could continue to show up every single day and give the Heat their full attention and perform well in these workouts, I think he’ll be on this preseason roster, which would be a very fascinating one. But I also feel like Miami is going to make a lot more signings. You mentioned they have four open preseason roster spots. So, could they bring in some other guys that are currently free agents? Now, they’re not going to be able to sign a legit free agent to a training comp camp camp deal. But if you look at some younger guys that haven’t been able to stick or veterans that are pretty much almost out of the league that Miami could kick the tires on, as Barry Jackson said, here are some interesting names. Markeel Folultz is the one that’s going to grab your attention. Listen, he doesn’t have any s or really options out there. I would absolutely bring him in. I know Jaylen Hushfino is on the list. I can’t quit him. I’m sorry. I was in on him prior to the 2023 draft. I’m still in on him. Have to. Garrison Matthews an intriguing one. He’s a Ben shooter. I really like Tristan Newton, former Yukon guard. He is just so smart the way he plays. Also, Oscar Sheway and Charles Bassie, two big centers that I could see Miami bring in. Oscar Sheway is one of the best rebounders that I have ever seen, point blank, period. Point is this and final really topic on today’s show. I’d expect Miami to add a decent amount of talent for the preseason roster. Do they go with players that were on their summer league team or do they go with established NBA guys that have gotten PT been hired draft picks that maybe the Heat try to get the best out of? I am under the belief they should try to get the best out of some of these guys that were drafted in the first and second round and been rotation guys in the past. But hey, that is just me. So, let’s say you name the player that you want to sign. Maybe it is Kai Jones. Maybe it’s one of those 10 names that I just showed on screen. Maybe it’s a different name. All I care about is you guys getting in the comment section and providing some more dialogue around this Heat team. And we’ll round out the show with this. If the Heat do make a signing, we’ll have you covered on the channel and on my social media. So, follow me over at nick_rolloff. You disappointed me, that's the classic American mentality, they don't care about anything outside of the US, you didn't learn geography at school, at least you should have respect when you talk about another country or culture that you don't know, you have a lot of knowledge about basketball but then 0, that's the typical arrogance that makes people think that you're all the same when you travel and say you're from the US.
