Big O and Ira Winderman – The Miami Heat NEED to Identify their STARS!
This is the big old show. [Music] This is the big O show. [Music] Keep fans. Time for the best insight of your favorite team with insider Ira Winderman exclusively on the Big O radio show. It’s the Acura of Penrook Pines, Miami Heat, and NBA Report. Here’s Ira Winderman. All righty. All righty. Alrighty. How are you doing, Ira? I’m doing good. Uh, as drips and drabs of the NBA schedule start to come out and to the surprise of no one, the Miami Heat are not mustsea viewing this year and they are really going to have to do something to make themselves interesting because right now, no opening night, no debut ESPN double header, uh, no initial peacock coverage, and of course, no Christmas. So, it’s interesting. Big O, you and I talk on our Acura Pebbrook Pines report every week about the importance of winning, of contending, of succeeding, but you know what? You also have to be relevant and you also have to be interesting. And I think right now the Heat on a lot of fronts are really struggling to sort of play catchup with the rest of the league. But that’s their problem, Ira. This is why we have this back and forth every week. And this is why the Heat, you know, quite frankly, have their heads up their asses. That’s all. They have to go to the point where they’re completely irrelevant and they completely fight for relevancy when you don’t have enough to be relevant. You You weren’t going to be relevant last year. Of course, you’re not going to be relevant this year. and you continue to waddle in the same area. Now you have become the Dolphins. This is what the Miami Heat have become, the Dolphins. You’re not good enough to beat the elite, but you’re just good enough to beat the scrubs. And you’re stuck in the middle, but you are not willing to do it. And when you open with this, of course, they’re not interesting. Look at their roster. They’re not supposed to be interesting. The worst part that they did, there were three roads that they could go. I was going to tell you today. I was going to tell you I’m glad they didn’t go down the Durant road and go buy some old fart and then tie themselves down to an extension and all that just like what Jimmy wanted or what Durant want. That would have been stupid. Mhm. This was this was the the the second dumbest road that they went trying to become relevant instead of completely tearing it all down. Sell everything that you can sell, get as many picks as you can and become completely irrelevant. But that’s what the Arisons will not do. They It’s not Riley anymore now. I am more convinced that it’s the ownership group is not willing to go all the way to the bottom and be an expansion team practically, but that’s the best thing for them. So now they’re stuck on a road where they want to become relevant, but they don’t have the tools to become relevant. They don’t have the players to become relevant. So now they get stuck in the middle. And you’re going to talk about how, oh my god, they got to be relevant or they stay away from being irrelevant. No. for once in their lives, they needed to become completely irrelevant instead of staying right in the middle and be dolphinish. Well, the other pathway is to be charismatic and at least be interesting. And a matter of fact, I’m going to posit this to you since you do so much work on the Dolphins. Arguably the most interesting player on the Heat, maybe the only interesting player on the Heat is Tyler Herro, who I don’t think is at that level of mustsea TV. I will say this though with the Dolphins, people do want to see Tua nationally because of his collegiate career, because of where he’s drafted. People do want to see Tyreek Hill nationally. When he makes scintillating plays, he makes scintillating plays. So, I would at least posit to you the Dolphins are a more charismatic team because they do have players that you would tune in to watch that you would have on your fantasy team. That’s the difference. But but Ira, go look at the hardware. There’s nothing in the hardware store. So it doesn’t matter if you have a year of Ricky Williams and Jay or two of throws for 4500 yards and Tyreek catches for two years of 1700 or if Jason Taylor is the defensive player of the year. Individual stuff is nice little trinkets for us to keep busy, but it’s not substance. The substance happens in sunrise. They are about team. They’re about quality. They’re about real stars. The Heat used to be about real stars. They’re no longer about real stars. In fact, they have no stars anymore as it is. And then the Dolphins, they never build anything foundationally the right way because they don’t win at the line of scrimmage, whether it’s Marino or whether it’s Tua. So yeah, it’s nice to entertain with Marino and it’s nice to entertain with Tua and it’s nice to entertain individually, but what do you accomplish collectively? And that is the quest. That’s what you want to do. That’s why they’ve become dolphinish because you want to go get one person to entertain you. It’s about winning. And the heat, the dolphins lost their way a long time ago from the Schula era all the way till now. They still haven’t figured out what they have to do. The Heat knew exactly what they had to do except now the laws, the rules and the laws have changed and they have not adjusted. That’s all really is. Which brings us to what I wrote Sunday in the Sunset Mill. What Orlando Eligaryi has been ranting about for a year here in Acura Penrook Ponds report and it’s this. You have to identify your stars and you have to be right in your identification. I still believe they’re correct in Bam Adabio for no matter what you say, he can contribute on both ends. He’s a winning player who has helped get them to winning places. Okay. Contributing player and all that, but not a star. A leading contributing player. The Tyler Hero extension is one of the most confounding things for me when I think about it. And again, for those just listening on the podcast, Big O is making the sour P sour puss face right now. But here’s the deal. There is always a right number, especially in a salary cap world. So for you to blanket say they shouldn’t resign, they shouldn’t extend Tyler, I think misses the mark. It’s the number. It’s the number they should consider. So last week we saw Dearon Fox get about $57 million a year in his extension. That’s crazy talk. I agree, Bigo O. We saw Male Bridges get 37.5, which is not a huge percentage of the cap. That’s more reasonable. That’s why the Knicks went there. What I’m saying to you big O is no matter what sour puss face you put on. There is a right number with Tyler Herro. The question with the Heat becomes this. They tend to fall in love with their own. Whether it’s the highest level of star, whether it’s the Dion Waiters, James Johnson level of players also. So, what I’m saying is, look, this is going to be a talking point for you and I through the beginning of October. October one, Tyler Herald’s extension window opens. October 20th, his extension window ends. Maybe we’ll just do a show every day during the extension period. But what I’m saying is there is a number. There is a number that makes sense for Tyler Herro. What the Heat cannot do is become overly emotional because it’s one of their own. They have to do the right thing. You talk about the Panthers all the time. They realized with Jonathan Hubedo, they could only go so far. They loved what he did. They loved his play. He was a good player, not a great player. But enough was enough. And you move on. Just like the players the Panthers have lost along the way during the Stanley Cup run. We see them come back and get their rings, but you realize there’s a price, there’s a level, and then you have to move on. So, I think the Tyler Heel thing is going to be really interesting. Players tend to overvalue themselves as they should. Their ego has gotten them this far. I am really curious. Look, Mickey Harrison once drew a line with Dwayne freaking Wade. Well, if you have the gumption to draw a line with Dwayne Wade, you should find it much easier, no offense, Tyler, you should find it much easier to draw a line with Tyler. So, what you and I are going to go through in these next couple of months is this. What is the right number for a Tyler Hero? For example, if an Andrew Wiggins can make $30 million, I think I could argue successfully Tyler deserves more than that. How much more? We can debate that. That’s the thing. We’ve got to find the right number. I I just don’t want either guy because I’ve seen what winning players look like and stars and studs and mother effers and neither one of those guys resemble that. And if you don’t re and if you don’t resemble that, if I’m the Miami Heat, I’m not tying myself to you, dude. Here’s the thing. I spoke to a scout in my column at the sunset on Sunday. spoke to an NBA scout and he said, “Let’s look at the the extensions here of De’arren Fox and Male Bridges and what Tyler deserves.” He had a very interesting line. He said, “I think Fox and Hero can be a number three on your teams.” So, Big O, what I’m saying to you is if Tyler gets extended as a number three, I’m fine with that. Let’s be honest here, Big O. Remember 2020? I know it was the bubble in the playoffs, but Tyler was very good and contributed. He had his 2022 year of six man of the year. you should get paid for that just like the Lou Williams got paid, just like players of that type get paid. I have no issue with that. So, what I’m saying is this. I’m going to disagree with you unless you you you come off differently here. I think Tyler Herro is good enough to be the third best player on a championship contender. I believe Bam Adabio is good enough to be the second best player on a championship. No, no, definitely not. Definitely not. You’re one and two have to be lead scorers. I’m not saying one and two. I’m saying two and three. So, you’re saying your number two has to be an elite scorer. So, your My question to you is this. Could Tyler Hiro ever be a number two? No. Because he doesn’t have balls. He doesn’t play tough. He He’s a finesse guy. Yeah, he could get some baskets. There’s no doubt about that. But when you get tough on him, he doesn’t respond, man. There’s no dog in him. You know, with Dwayne Wade, you were going to knock him down seven times. He was going to get back up again eight times. with Alonzo Morning. He was the undersized center, but you weren’t going to deny the son of a Anthony Mason undersized also. You weren’t going to deny the son of a There’s a there’s there’s We used to have players that just were not denied. And I don’t care if you were PJ Brown. It wasn’t an offensive thing, it was a defensive thing. You weren’t going to be denied. I don’t see that in in Tyler Herro. I don’t see dog in BAM. In fact, Asia Wilson just became the first WNBA player to put up 30 points and 20 rebounds. She’s a bad bro. She’s a bad mofo. She’s dog. Okay. He’s not. She’s dog. He’s not. I’ve seen dog in Heat uniforms many, many times. Bam is not. Bam is a really a super role player is what he is. So on um Yeah. Can he be a three? Yeah. Can Tyler be a three? Yeah. Can either one of them be a one or two? No, dude. They’re not Alonzo. They’re not Wade. They’re not Shaq. They’re not Timmy. They’re They’re not any of those kind of guys, bro. They’re just not those kind of guys, man. I’m sorry. I’ve seen those kind of guys here. They’re not those guys. See, I think Tyler, no matter how he does it, is a coldblooded scorer. Now, you want to see it maybe in different ways, more aggressive and all that, but the point is he’s a 23-point a game scorer when it’s hard to find that. And a matter of fact, on this roster, now I know you want to fall to the bottom and all of that, but on this roster, if he doesn’t score, I’m not sure who scores. Now, if a Norman Powell comes in and shows he can score and some of the kids come in. Oh, see, I just I just think that there’s a way to make this work if Tyler is scoring and is doing it at the right price point. That’s the point that I’m trying to make here. I I get it. I get it. I just would rather you keep everything liquid and open and flowing and just in case, which you can, which you can. You do not have to extend. Tyler Hero has two more years under contract. The price point might go up as you know. We have seen teams sit back on players and like a crap we can’t afford him now. I get that. And if you want them to be prudent to sit back, I have no issue with that. And by the way, if a year or two from now he wants to turn into a dog all of a sudden, then you have to pay him more. I don’t care. I don’t think he has I don’t think he has that in him. I think Tyler will always give you his best. I think Tyler here will always give you his best. I’m not sure if his best will be good enough for you, Orlando Eligary, but he’s not the kind of player who’s going to quit on the game. He’s He’s a hoop junkie. He’s a gym rat. That’s who he is. He cares. He’s not Jimmy with his 19 other ventures and he’ll show up twice a month for you, talk about the playoffs, and then get injured and miss the playoffs. But at least when Jimmy wants to play, he can be a son of a And that’s what I like, and that’s what I need on my team. So that’s the interesting thing. Would you rather pay a part-time son of a You have to admit th this this group of players that they now are bringing in, there’s a niceness level to them that just didn’t exist in prior iterations of the Miami Heat. They just were just more nastier and they were they just played a a they were at a higher level. The the the players, it just Oh, man. I I when I see this, I just see it notch down everybody across the board, the whole team. I don’t see Spo them, but they were dogs, bro. Yeah. I’m not so sure that you’re not being the old man yelling at people to get off your lawn. Times change, Big O. The game is different. I’m not so sure. When you looked at the Oklahoma City Thunder winning the championship last year, you looked at a bunch of what you call mofos. What I say I looked at when I saw the Thunder win was this. An immense amount of t Ira froze. Hold on. I’m here. Hold on. I’m here. It was the old man on the lawn comment that was coming in. So, we’ll see if we can get Ira back here. I’m here and get him uh get him going. Okay, there we go. The old man on You were going on the old man on the lawn comic. I was going I’m just saying your thought of of sort of ranting about toughness. Think about the Oklahoma City Thunder and think about how they won their championship. It wasn’t a tough guy routine. Super talented. That’s the point I’m trying to make. Talent trumps all. So you have to say, does Bam have enough talent? Does Tyler have enough talent? Does Haime have enough talent? Does Nico have enough talent? That’s where I want this to go. I believe the Heat more than being not tough enough are not talented enough. And sometimes I think they look for that hardworking approach more than they do for talent. This team, and I think you agree, Orlando, needs a talent upgrade. Oh yeah, there’s no doubt. But when you look at Indiana and New York, there’s a toughness that Miami does not possess compared to them. And so that’s neither of those teams won a championship. I’m still talent doesn’t trump. Yeah, they went farther. And that’s where at least that toughness got them there. They’re going to need talent in the end. And Indiana, obviously the Hallebertton injury, there’s your talent and toughness at the same time. But the kid was injured and then that really held them back. Even Indiana’s toughness stretched that series out. Okay. So, at least I give Indiana credit for fighting all the way through. And the edge that Indiana plays with the the these Heat players don’t possess that. Well, but I also think they have to re reinvent themselves to at least be interesting. I need to talk to you every week and saying, “Hey, did you see what Haime did? Did you see what Nico did? Do you see what Kell did?” Yeah, that that’s what that’s what I’m look that’s what I’m praying for this season that I’m hoping that it’s the young guys now, even in a loss when you can tell me, “Hey, Kell showed me something that he could be a big man on a contender. Hey, Haime showed me that last year was a fluke and he’s back. Hey, Nico showed me that what he’s doing internationally with Serbia, he can do here with the Heat. Those are the things I totally agree I’m looking for this season as well. Absolutely. Look, the the the Heat is also in a really good zone for themselves. Why? There are no expectations. Nobody they’re a 10th place team, not expected to be better. Yes. Yeah. Nobody’s expecting jack from them anyways. So, you know, if they go out there and actually do something, they’re going to shock us. You know, it’s kind of like the Marlins this year. They went and got that streak and, you know, people got on board and they never gave a about the Marlins, but all of a sudden they’re interested now when they, you know, for the month and a half. So, I I think there’s a little bit of that that actually plays to their favor now because the the the days of expectations are kind of done now with the Miami Heat. That’s the other thing that unfortunately they’ve killed. They’ve killed expectations and that’s why they have to come up with their version of a Star Wars or someone like that. So even if they’re not winning, you say to yourself, “Hey, that guy’s at bat. That guy’s in the game. That guy’s playing. I want to see that guy. The Heat have to get that guy.” Bam out of a wonderful workmanlike player. Tyler Herro, very nice little shooter. Dynamic. Matter of fact, I’ll throw it back at you, Big O. Who would you consider the most dynamic Miami Heat player? using the word dynamic. Is there one Yovic? Okay, I’ll go with that. Fun player can do things at 611. I’ll go with that. That’s what this team needs more of. Show me something dynamic. Show me Show me something out of the box. So when I have games streaming this year on Peacock and Prime and ESPN and ABC and NBC, I might actually say, “You know what? I’m going to turn on FanDuel and Eric Reed and John Crowy because I want to see Player X do something. I need to have that Player X. I want to see Yovic now this year. He’s got every skill set and if he can, you know, sharpen each one up and all that, he can become a much better player. Khal Wear, I love what I saw from Kel Wear, you know, I’m a Pel Larson guy as it is. Uh what is it? Yakonis. Yakonis. Casper is Yakonis. He We know he can make the plays. It’s just he might make the woo play or the oh my god play. You got to sort of balance that. Yeah, he’s supposed to do that. That’s fine. I’m good with I I I’m good with all that. I’ve told you this. I’m good with development. I’m good with that. What I’m not good with is lying to yourself thinking you’re trying to build something and and trying to sell that. Oh, you’re going deep and and you’re not, bro. You’re not going deep into the playoffs. No, big big. Let me ask you this. You you already talked about how you don’t think the Arisons have enough patience. You’ve already talked about how you don’t think Pat Riley has enough patience. Do you think Eric Spolstra can develop the needed patience? I I’d rather do it this way there. What’s the endg game here? But if Eric Spolzer doesn’t have the patience if I tear it down and I’m gonna get young talent or I’m going to get a bunch of picks to create to go get a young star or something now as a coach, I’ve got more to to to, you know, to build on to feel good about. right now if you’re Eric Spolster the last couple of years and the next couple of years moving forward you you don’t have the ammunition to really become an elite team. So he doesn’t really have a lot to look forward to right now. He has no young real star on his team at this point in time like other teams may have young stars that coaches are excited to develop and and that the offense is going to revolve around. He doesn’t have that right now. He doesn’t have a Dwayne Wade. So, this is kind of tough for him right now. The way things are being built because you’re a middling team every single year. There’s really no upside to it. I’d rather That’s why I’d rather tear it all the way down because then there could be an upside. And the only way you tear it is to play the young guys, consistent big minutes, and have the patience. Will Eric Spolster have the patience? Big O for as much as I’ve seen from Eric Spolster. I’m not so sure he does because you’re asking him to go back almost to the Beasley and Chalmer’s years back in 2008. Well, but he did it also with all the uh scrubs. I mean, you had to have a lot of those weren’t developmental when he did it with a lot of the scrubs with the waiters and the Johnson’s and the Ellingtons. Those were guys who were placeholders more than future for this team. I know. I know. But okay. So then what does he want? Because if he wants to just coach a a a championship caliber team, he’s not I don’t I don’t disagree. I’m saying I think he should. I’m saying I’m not sure he has that patience. The last Heat coach asked to have that kind of patience was Stan Van Gundy when he had Karan Butler and Dwayne Wade and Rasul Butler and a young team and started 0 and7 and worked his way up. Now he coaches haven’t been asked to do that since this will be a dynamic change for someone like Eric Spolster 17 years in. Can he do it? I’m really looking forward on our weekly weekly actor Penrook Pines reports to find out if that can be the case. Oh, I I know he can do it. The real question is, does he want to do it? Okay, that’s better phrasing. That That’s really I He can do whatever the hell he wants to do. The guy’s a freaking great coach. He’s proven that over and over and over again. But you’re right, maybe he doesn’t want to do that. And then that becomes another issue down the line. Does Eric Spolster become unhappy down the line and say, you know, I I need to go to a franchise that’s given me some talent so I can really, you know, go challenge for a title, you know, front office, right? No, I or move move to the front. How much say does he have in personnel? A lot. A lot. It’s contractual. It’s built into his agreement. He has a lot of say in there. Not only does he have a lot of say, he should be deferred to. He’s on the front lines all the time. He sees the players. God bless Pat, but Pat does not travel except for the playoffs. maybe a few regular season games. Mickey and Nick Harrison are at most, but not all practices. Eric knows, no one knows the talent on this team and arguably, with all due respect to Andy Ellisburg and Adam Simon, the talent in this league as much as Eric Spolster. So, he does and I want him to have that type of personnel input. Yeah, I I agree. I agree. All right. What do you got going on the send? So folks, well, we’re drips and drabing the schedule. So today we had the Christmas games and when you won’t see the heat tomorrow they’re going to announce the inseason tournament, the four games, the fancy courts, all the stuff people either love or hate. 😂😂 I was not prepared for 11:32
So big O shut up with saying Pat's not giving him the talent. This man is making a lot of decisions in the talent acquisition department. He needs to do better with talent acquisition. Get off his high horse get some good players in here and go win a championship
Agreed with big O if your 2 best players were Bam and herro you are always a mediocre team
NP & TH occupy the same position. Meanwhile, no starting point or power forward. Stop making it difficult. If u can fill a power forward or Center, to let Bam play the 4, use your extra 2 in a trade.
Ira, please go on a different show so I don’t have to listen to this anymore… PLEASE
The Problem is not Tyler or Bam, but the rest of the roster. This team played with G league players and rookies. Boston, New York, Cleveland don't have crap player around their all-star players.
