Portland Trail Blazers 2025-26 Roster Breakdown: Depth, Experience, and Playoff Hopes

Portland Trail Blazers 2025-26 Roster Breakdown: Depth, Experience, and Playoff Hopes

The Portland Trailblazers are gearing up for the 202526 season with a significantly overhauled roster and there’s a palpable sense of hope in the air. After finishing last season with 36 wins, fans and analysts alike are optimistic that the team can improve, especially given the infusion of both depth and experience during the off season. But the pressing question remains, how prepared will the team be when the season kicks off in October compared to previous years? This is the focus of today’s Blazers Edge mailbag. Dave, I’m feeling cautiously optimistic that we may have finally figured out the puzzle of building a successful roster. Over the past five seasons, we’ve experienced a lot of changes and imbalances. However, I now see a promising blend of youthful talent and seasoned players along with solid depth across all positions. With a bit of growth and some good fortune, I believe we can at least secure a playoff spot. What’s your take on the current roster construction? Jane’s creating a traditional depth chart in today’s NBA is quite challenging. While the concept of positionless basketball hasn’t completely taken over, the traditional roles of point guard, shooting guard, and others are becoming somewhat outdated. This is especially true for the Trailblazers, who currently have three point guards, assuming Damen Lillard is healthy, just one small forward, and a center, all of whom are capable of initiating plays. That said, we can still categorize players into broader groups. Here’s how Portland’s roster might be organized, focusing on the key players while acknowledging that some others may play supporting roles. Guards: Scoot Henderson, Shaden Sharp, Drew Holiday, Damen Lillard, Matise Thyiel, Rayan Roupert. Forwards: Denny Aia, Jeremy Grant, Tumani Chimera, Chris Murray. centers Donovan Klingan, Yang Hansen. However, they are somewhat lacking in numbers at the forward positions, which remains a concern for achieving a well-balanced roster. We could stretch the definitions a bit by labeling some of the larger guards as wings and suggesting that they could take on forward roles. Yet it raises the question of whether Shaden Sharp, for example, is truly a small forward and whether shifting him between multiple positions might hinder his development. Alternatively, we could consider having Robert Williams or even Yang Hansen play as power forwards, but this brings up concerns about how it might affect their teammates who play center, as well as potentially limiting the scoring options for smaller players by allowing defenses to congest the paint due to a lack of three-point shooting. A quick note, many people underestimate the significance of shooting from distance in the context of positionless basketball. The ability to score from various areas on the court puts pressure on defenses. If both your power forward and shooting guard can hit corner threes, it becomes less critical to determine who plays where. However, if your shooting guard can shoot from long range, but your forward cannot, the ladder is forced to operate closer to the basket, thus becoming more of a traditional power forward rather than a modern, versatile player. The Blazers currently lack sufficient three-point shooting, which means they may face challenges in interchanging players on offense despite their height and defensive versatility. Portland’s immediate need is quite clear. Unless Chris Murray can develop his offensive game to the point where he can consistently contribute, the team will rely heavily on Gerami Grant, Denny Abdia, and Tumani Chimera to remain healthy and log significant minutes. If all three can perform well, Portland could have a dynamic trio at the forward positions reminiscent of the Clyde Drexler, Terry Porter, Danny A guard trio. However, if any of them suffer injuries or fail to meet expectations, as many worry might happen with Grant, the forward lineup could quickly become alarmingly thin, leaving the reserves mismatched. Another area of concern is the production from the shooting guard position. The names on that guard list carry considerable weight, especially when compared to previous seasons. However, if Shaden Sharp struggles, what options do the Blazers have? Scoot Henderson could be replaced by Drew Holiday at point guard. And while Holiday could also play shooting guard, he is unlikely to replicate the scoring output that Sharp is expected to provide. Of could potentially shift to shooting guard and contribute significantly, but that would further deplete the forward positions. There will be considerable pressure on Sharp to have a successful season. If he falters, he could become the critical piece whose absence leads to a collapse of Portland’s depth. In summary, I would say that the Blazers find themselves in a better position compared to recent rosters, but it’s not without its vulnerabilities. A lot needs to go right for that depth to be effective, particularly concerning the performances of Sharp and Grant. While the odds of a successful season appear to be improving, the possibility of setbacks still looms large. Thank you for your question.
