We’re both at Wake Forest and App State. There are quarterback battles still playing out as the college football regular season quickly approaches. We’ll get updates on both local competitions during today’s show, including when Mountaineer head coach Dal Loggins joins the program at 5:30. But before we do any of that, let’s first talk about a couple of NFL quarterbacks. When the Carolina Panthers meet the Houston Texans for a joint practice tomorrow morning, we’re going to see the number one and number two picks from the 2023 draft share the same field. And naturally, that’s going to be a central topic of interest. So, let’s just ask the question up top. Two years later, who would you rather have as your quarterback, Bryce Young or CJ Stra? 3367771600 if you want in on the topic because if we were asking this a year ago the answer would have seemed obvious. In fact, you might have been laughed at for merely asking the question. But today, determining who’s better between Bryce and CJ, it’s a more legitimate question and it is far from settled. While Strad had one of the greatest rookie seasons we’ve ever seen a quarterback have, Bryce was better than CJ was over the last 10 games of 2024. And that’s not a small sample size. It’s more than half the season. Bryce over the 10 games, the final 10 games of the season, had four more touchdown passes than CJ, two fewer interceptions, more rushing scores, more passing yards, and a better pass rating. If you just limit the scope, probably the best quarterback in the NFL, you can make the case over the final three games of the season where Bryce had 10 total touchdowns and no turnovers. This season, we’re going to learn a lot about this because in year one, you looked at the situations both quarterbacks were in and it was night and day. Look at the weapon CJ had. Look at the support. CJ Thomas Brown wrestling back back and forth with Frank Reich with for play calling. The weapons were bad. The protection was bad. It was night and day. The support or lack thereof between these two guys. This is what makes this uh this season so interesting. 2025 marks the first time that Bryce unquestionably has a better supporting cast than CJ does. Bryce this off season adds a top 10 pick in the draft in Tedoa McMillan. A second 1,00 yard. Meanwhile, CJ Stra, what happened with him? Lost Stefan Diggs in the offse. Tank Dell got hurt so late in the year with that gruesome injury on a touchdown. He’s probably gonna miss the entire season. Damon Pierce is just being worked back. He’s not completely healthy. What’s one of the strengths of Carolina now? The Great Wall of Lina. Carolina, an offensive line that is a strength of the team. The Texans O line is projected to be the worst in the NFL this year. Also, Bryce, when’s the last time Bryce hasn’t had to learn a new offense? Every year, it seems he has to learn a new offense. Not this year. Dave Canal is back. Brad is back. Meanwhile, Houston inexplicably moved off of Bobby Slowick. So, CJ Stout, everything is set up for Bryce and it seems so much against CJ this season. What will the production look like this year? Very important for both quarterbacks. Bryson and CJ, they are eligible for extensions this off seasonason. And don’t forget, they’re friends off the field, very close. They’re from similar parts of Southern California. This is not decided. We’re going to spike the football in this one. Will, last year we were saying it when it was unpopular to do so. Who is standing up here today saying there’s still a shot Anthony Richardson’s better than Bryce Young? Would love to meet you. Would love to know your name. It still seems that CJ slightly ahead of Bryce Young, but it’s a lot. It is a debatable topic you can have today. And is Bryce. I think it’s kind of disrespectful to say Bryce Young is closer to him. How so? You know, Bryce Young has only really had what a what was that a six, seven games? 10 games. Okay. 10. Okay. 10 games. Um, that’s more than half a season. Yeah. It’s more than half the season, but she she drafted the team to the playoffs. Yeah. More than twice. I mean, both times he’s been in the league. I just said CJ’s ahead of Bryce. Are you saying it’s settled? Are you saying it’s disrespectful to even ask the question whether or not Bryce could be a better quarterback than CJ? Well, not settled because Well, that’s the point I’m making. Yeah, but I’m saying the state is close now. Bryce Young is still he can still pick it up. I still think Bryce Young still got a lot more proven to do for himself. I agree. Uh CJ Stra supporting class. I don’t know about the offensive line. You gota remember they picked up Nick Chub too. So this is what I’m saying. You you if CJ Stra’s better than Bryce Young this year, mark my words right now on August the 13th. CJ with this supporting cast is better than Bryce Young is in 2025. No more excuses for Bryce. You got the running backs, you got the line, you got the receivers. No more excuses. Bryce, you better be better than CJ. If you’re not, CJ is a better quarterback than you are. Plain and simple. Yeah, I would agree with that. Okay, CJ still got the best receiver out of both teams. I think you’re right as of now. The nominees will figure out who the winner is in just a little bit because there’s bombshell sports news for us to get to today. Carolina Hurricane owner Tom Dundan has purchased Tom Dundan has purchased the Portland Trailblazers and Weirdly, even though Dundan is a NHL owner purchasing an NBA team, what’s most interesting about this subject is how this impacts baseball in the state of North Carolina. Is this the part where we hear from WD’s nominee, Robert Dairo, playing Al Capone in the Untouchables? Baseball. Yeah, it seems that was a perfect spot for this because Tom Dundan has let it be known he wants to bring Major League Baseball to North Carolina and now he’s owning an NBA team. This news is going to affect our state status as an MLB, a potential MLB expansion site. We just don’t know if it’s a Here’s the case for this being positive. Tom Dundan continues to grow his network and grow his reputation. Think about Washington football owner Josh Harris. He started by acquiring the Philadelphia 76ers and then it was the New Jersey Devils and him having success in those categories. See the rich billionaire class. It’s a small group of people. So being a part being in a lot of these types of rooms can only help you. And when you prove you can run multiple teams well, it bodess well for your chances of continuing to upgrade. It got him into the NFL. And Dundan every year he’s been the Kane’s owner. Every full season, the seven full seasons they’ve made the playoffs and won a playoff series. So he’s running the Canes incredibly well. We’ll see how he does now with the Blazers. This is the case for this news being negative for baseball in North Carolina. Tom Dun has so much only so much time and so much money. Tapper is one of the richest owners in the NFL. And even Ter has found running owning two teams is enough for him to handle. And that’s not even an NBA or an NHL franchise that he’s looking at. It’s MLS to Charlotte FC and the Carolina Panthers. So that coupled with the challenges that we’ve talked about for years, our state being being interested enough in our state, it probably does make MLB a pipe dream. If you had to choose one or the other, is this good news for our state standing or bad news? It probably is bad news. But at least we got another bad small market NBA team that we can root for. We got the Hornets and then we have the Western Conference’s Portland Trailblazers. Now, and the Blazers, as a bonus, even have the same color scheme and a similar logo as the Carolina Hurricanes do. Just think of the crossover possibilities. Trip Tracy on the broadcast saying huge Kaniac Dame Lillard. Gonna get him out for the siren. Huge Kaniac. Scoot him. That probably is a day one guy. Get him on the siren. Figure it out in terms of crossover appeal. But it’s a bombshell headline. It’s one of the biggest stories in sports. It’s still Robbie Ashford against it. could not be any more different stylistically. Ashford is an older mobile quarterback transferring in from an SEC school, South Carolina, oddly enough, where Dow Loggins was the play caller the last couple of years. Perie is a pocket passer. He’s an underassman from group of five Charlotte transferring in to Wake Forest. through out spring practice and preseason camp. Neither has separated. Neither has been super impressive. Oddly enough, Wake’s defense has been most impressive. They’ve been further ahead about what the defense has done so far, but keeping our scope focused on the quarterbacks, this competition, it could be decided in the next few days. They have a night practice tonight. They have another practice on Friday. Then according to Jake Dicker, it’s gonna be time to start game planning for Kennesaw State. Here was Dicker after practice yesterday. We’ll see what Friday brings. You know, Saturday will be be a big evaluation day and what we want to do for the team. Then we start getting into our prep for game one not until next week, Wednesday, you know. So that’ll be kind of a little bit of a targeted time that we want to try to find it. Um, if it’s not by then, you know, we’ll keep progressing into a game. Whoever wins this battle has one primary job. Don’t turn it over. That’s just facts. Don’t mess it up. You don’t have to help us so much as you don’t hurt us. Don’t be a liability out there. They have weapons. De Mont Claybour might be the best running back in the ACC. You got him. You got good receivers. Mike May probably being the most noteworthy receiver that you have out there. You don’t really need your quarterback to be a playmaker. But will this is kind of the sales pitch for both the quarterbacks here. Well, if you’re wanting a quarterback to be more of a playmaking option, Robbie Ashford’s the more mobile quarterback. You have that. And if you couple that threat with having Dean Clayborn in the backfield, and you would think more experience, especially experience that comes in the SEC helps you a great deal. Being the older guy, Rob Ashford probably helps you win football games a little bit more right now than Deshawn Perie does. But then Deshan Perie is younger, more of a pocket passer. Maybe it’s in year one as a coach, more investment being put into a guy who has multiple years of eligibility left. That factors into this conversation, too. So, if you’re Jake Dicker, what do you weigh more? Do you weigh more? What helps you win more right now in year one or looking at a guy who might be the future of the team? I go what helps you win now? I I’d go Robbie Ashford. I think I’m with you. Yeah. Just because of the running element brings more fun possibilities there.
