Knicks Get BAD NEWS on Kevin McCullar Jr.
[Music] What are the New York Knicks going to do with roster spot 13, 14, and 15? We’re going to talk about that on today’s show as you’re watching Nicks Now by Chat Sports. And I am your host, Marshall Green. A lot of questions have been coming out about is Kevin McCull going to be on the Knicks this year. Is he going back to the G-League? Is he going to sign that two-way deal? or could they get him on that second round exception contract? Well, it doesn’t sound like they can. You look at the Knicks roster and their over overall outlook, and shout out to Bobby Marks for making this photo. They’re up to $24.1 million in salaries spent already. They are just $3.7 million away from that second apron, which they cannot exceed. They cannot go past that number. They have the second round exception salary, which teams can now sign their second round pick to a three or four-year deal uh to standard contracts without requiring cap room or another exception. They also have a veteran minimum deal. They have 12 players on the roster right now. Still have their three two-way deals and uh we’re all wondering when they’re going to start filling out the rest of their roster. Shout out to Ian Begley of SNY. He had Keith Smith, NBA insider and salary cap afficionado on his show, The Putback. And Begley kind of asked the same question I did, which is, can the Knicks sign McCuller to that second round exception deal? And he said he is not eligible to do that because he has already signed one contract. That needs to be an initial contract signed by the player. So, the Knicks still have his rights. They could bring him back on a two-way. They could bring him back on a one-year minimum contract as well. So maybe not a second round exception deal coming for Kevin McCuller Jr. this off season, but at the end of the day, they still have his rights. Uh I would have liked to seen him in the big leagues. Uh there were some things that I really liked him uh on his tape coming out of Kansas. I thought he did some decent stuff in the G-League last year as well. And he also looked really good in the summer league. Maybe it’s cuz he was a 24 year old player playing a bunch against a bunch of other younger guys. But that game against the Boston Celtics where he put up 30 points, he was getting up and down in transition. He was attacking the rim. He was aggressive. He looked like a player that I thought maybe could have earned that 15th or 14th final roster spot on the New York Knicks team this year. And I was kind of hoping for that. And there’s still a way that they could do it. They could essentially offer him that veteran a minimum deal. But then you’d have to sign Mohhamd and James Naji and then another player to the 15th spot and you kind of lose out on Gershan Yael taking that discount to allow a veteran minimum deal. So I think it’s most likely another two-way deal coming for him. Another league a year in the GLeague and some opportunities to come up to the big leagues as well. So, uh, I think that’s where we’re heading for him, which means the Knicks still need to fill out roster spot 13, roster spot 14, and down the road is what it sounds like, roster spot number 15. So, who could get that second round deal? James Nagi could be that player. Um, that’s what Keith Smith and Ian Begley talked about on the show. He played a little bit in the summer league for the New York Knicks. Still just 21 years old. He was drafted tw in the 2023 draft, number 31 overall by the Detroit Pistons. Played a little bit in the G- League prior to that with the Charlotte Hornets, but last year he was overseas. Had a back injury a couple of years ago. Athletic big man that could protect the rim and get up and down. Could be a potential option. Or maybe it’s Mohamd Diwara, the player that you selected in the second round of the 2025 NBA draft. Overseas last year, averaging 5.8 points per game. Had some nice moments in the summer league. showed off that defensive versatility. Can get up and down as well. Uh had a nice little jab step, put it on the deck, hit a three off the bounce as well. Some people are ready to say he’s the next Pascal Seakum. I would say hit the brakes on that. But there are is some potential there. And I actually like the idea of him being on that second round uh exception deal that the New York Knicks have. I know this if the Knicks do make a move, whether it is signed roster spot 13, 14, or 15, we are going to make a video. So, make sure you are subscribed to the channel, have those notifications on so when the Knicks make a move, you get a video. Keith Smith also said this via the putback. Shout out to Shout out once again to Ian Begley. Keith saying, “So, what then would the Knicks be doing? You’d be saying kind of like they did a year ago where it is, hey, we’re going to bring you in, but you’ll hang out in the G-League for a few months talking about their 15th spot. Then, when we’re able to, we’ll bring you up with a pro-rated minimum deal and we’ll sign you.” We’ll see though. Maybe that’s the direction they go. Uh but I tend to think they’re going to go the other way and say, “Hey, you want to fill it out with a true minimum another guy in that 15th spot will be what goes to somebody. Then you could sign that pro-rated spot, which would be months and months from now. Here’s the overall deal. Uh the Knicks can’t sign a veteran minimum player and Kevin McCuller Jr. because Keller can’t sign that second round exception deal. And the only way they can bring it back at this point is a veteran minimum deal. So if you want McCull on the roster, he has to sign that veteran minimum contract. What I think most likely happens and the way it plays out is the second round exemption deal, it goes to Mohamd Dawir, TBD, on who that vet minimum contract is. We’ve talked about Landrew Sham, we’ve talked about Ben Simmons, we’ve talked about Malcolm Brogden, Corey Joseph is a new name that’s been brought up. Uh, we talked about Thomas Bryant the other day. Still, I think the Knicks are doing their due diligence and figuring out who that would be and who the best fit is for that spot. And then your 15th roster spot, most likely going to be someone on a two-way deal that could be elevated to the 15th roster spot down the line. Remember, they did that with Matt Ryan last year. They’re playing a salary cap game at this point. They cannot exceed that second apron and they’re only $3.7 million away from doing so. So, they have to be creative and they won’t sign a player to the 15th roster spot until they have to, which is a couple of months into the season. Couple more thoughts on who the Knicks could sign and some more stuff from Ian Begley coming up. But, you go to this link chatports.com/nike sale, you get this t-shirt on sale in the season. It’s around the corner. They’re actually releasing the schedule today and uh you should be ready to go when the schedule does get released and the Knicks are ready to play hoops again. chatports.com/nike sale. That link is clickable in the comments and description. Alrighty. Uh, in that same putback episode from Begley of SNY, he pretty much said he thinks uh it’s going to be Andrew Shamut for the minimum. Again, this is what he thinks. He also said it would take a major change in thought process from the organization as well. And the reason I think he thinks that is because he’s maybe been told that. I’m not putting words in Ian Begley’s mouth. I’m just speculating. Um, he’s an extremely tapped in guy. He’s extremely smart. He thinks things for certain reasons. Not saying that he says it’s going to be Shamut. He just thinks it. And I think that, uh, we’ve come to learn when Ian Begley says he thinks something that it might be that. And I don’t hate the idea of resigning Landry Sham. We put out a video yesterday talking about him on the tail end of the yesterday’s show. And I think it makes the most sense. Like if you’re going to sign someone to this team that’s not guaranteed minutes every single night, you need someone that’s okay with that. And Shamut’s that type of guy. I don’t think Ben Simmons is going to be okay if he catches 12 DNPs in a row. Malcolm Brogden ready to be a DNP player at this point. Shaman makes a lot of sense. And he got better as the season went on. Like in the playoffs, limited games played. He was good shooting 46.7% from the field. And during the regular season for Landry Sham, he ended up shooting 39% from downtown. And that number is drastically skewed because when you look at the numbers for Shamut, when he first came back from injury, he was not okay. And he kind of was forced into playing earlier than I would say he needed to. And he kind of made the most of it. But from February 8th and on through the rest of the regular season, that’s when he started to find his stride from downtown and he was able to knock down shots a little bit more consistently. So, I’m okay with Landrew Shamut being on this team, the 14th roster spot. It’s not going to make it’s not going to break you. Um, and I think you could use another shooter off the bench like Miles McBride and Gershon Yapacelli are probably your best shooters right now. But a guy like Landry Shamut who from February 8th and on shot 42% from downtown on 1.7 attempts per night, like that could make some sense. He’s a willing defender as well. He’s liked in the locker room. He knows the culture. He knows the expectations. He knows the pecking order. I think Sham makes the most sense at this point. Uh, sounds like that’s what we could be trending towards. What do you think? Should the Knicks have Landry Shamut put pen to paper to rejoin this team? Type Y for yes. Type N for no. And make sure you are following me on social media because if the Knicks do sign Shamut or somebody else, uh, I’m going to be tweeting about it on my Twitter. So, give me a follow and let’s go Knicks. [Music]

Shamet as your 5th or 6th guard is solid depth
Yes re-sign Kmac.
Kmac and L.Shamet could split the vet minimum which I hear is legally possible in the NBA.
Two way I prefer with the more cap space will be available after the 2026 season.
Yes to bringing back L.Shamet.
