that happened with the Minnesota Timberwolves Literally they use analytics for everything The reason I got traded cuz I shot a mid-range jumper So I remember I came in the locker room We’re down one to half and I had to shoot it The shot clock was going on and I shot a mid-range jump shot and I actually made it I’m having a a decent game going to the locker room You kind of could hear people yelling and he was like “He just don’t want to buy in I’m going to get his ass out of here.” I’m like “What the is who happened?” As we walk out coach tells me “Come on Jeff man you just have to buy in Like the what like we don’t play defense We the worst defense team in the league What the we talking about defense for he was like man you shooting those floaters and these mid-range shots Like step behind the line and shoot the three And I didn’t shoot a bunch of threes I wasn’t like a volume three-point shooter They was just like “Yeah we got to get you the out of here You’re not part of where we want to go.” And I used to just think like I hope Minnesota lose every game Every time Minnesota lost like I just went out and had a great

Analytics fail to see how the game is actually played. Sure, layups and 3 pointers are the higher value shot, but when a playmaker has the ball, sometimes the highest value shot they can create is a mid range jump shot. Look at OKC, they use analytics sure, they create space with the proficiency of 3 pointers shooters they have, but they won the chip with SGA taking tons of mid range shots.

There are only two types of shots in basketball: good shots and bad shots. Feet set, open and in the shooter's range is a good shot regardless of if it's a two-pointer or three-pointer. Lots of good two-pointers being passed up for contested three-pointers :/
