The San Antonio Spurs Finally Have the Offense to Match Wemby’s Defense
Now, for about two years, coming up on three years now, the San Antonio Spurs have had one of the most dangerous players in NBA history in their possession. And you guys know who I’m referring to, none other than Victor Wimyama. And why I believe Wimby is already one of the most dangerous players in NBA history is because I think he’s one of those rare guys that as soon as he gets onto the playoff scene as soon as the San Antonio Spurs get a team around Victor Winyama that’s good enough to get into the NBA playoffs. His impact is going to be so high, especially on the defensive side of the basketball. I think when Victor Winyama is in the playoffs, his team is always going to have a chance to win with ever whichever playoff series he is in. And I think that’s exactly what arc the San Antonio Spurs are heading into right now because we look at these last couple of NBA drafts. I think they’ve done a phenomenal job. And what put the ch and what put the cheering on top for me was the mid-season trade that they made last season. I thought this was such a beautiful trade by the San Antonio Spurs. they took advantage of a um player not being not wanting to be in a certain situation. That was De’Arren Fox. He didn’t want want to be with the the um Sacramento Kings on a long-term deal. And he also um made it clear that he wanted to go play with the San Antonio Spurs with Victor Renyama. And this is what a lot of people predicted when the San Antonio Spurs drafted Wimby. Everybody thought that he was such a great prospect, such a great basketball talent that the San Antonio Spurs, they were going to be a destination for star basketball players. And here we are, one of the best point guards in the NBA. Dearan Fox is now a San Antonio Spur, and he’s going to be playing alongside Victor Winyama. And what was so sweet about this for the Spurs is that they literally didn’t give up none of their key assets. They didn’t give up a ton of draft capital. Um, they kept older guys on the teams like Harrison Barnes and CP3 who could have been included in that type of deal. They kept the reigning rookie of the year, Stefan Castle. They kept Jeremy Sonhe, Devin Vel, Kelvin Johnson. They kept a um a handful of highquality basketball players in order to bring in a guy like the Aaron Fox. And this offseason, the San Antonio Spurs, they have wrapped them up to a longterm deal. So, I think this is going to take the San Antonio Spurs to the next level and it’s going to get them to playoff contention where I just said a little while ago once Victor Wimbeyama gets on the playoff scene, he’s going to be a very dangerous man. His the type of player that he is, it translates to the type of game of basketball turns into when it’s time for playoff basketball. We know how much size matters and we know how much defense matters. But what I’m looking at with the Aaron Fox and how I think he’s really going to elevate the San Antonio Spurs and um I’m speaking like this is new to the team cuz it kind of is the Aaron Fox. He didn’t get here into the middle of the season last year, but him and Victor Wimyama, they only played um five games together and then um before Wimi went down for the season and then a few games later, De’aran Fox goes down for the season as well. So that’s one reason I’m looking forward to De’Aran Fox with this San Antonio Spurs next season. uh we get a rejuvenated De’arren Fox because it was evident that he did not want to be with the Sacramento Kings long term and I think that’s why we kind of seen a bit of a slumpy De’Arren Fox last season after four amazing years of playing basketball. So, I’m expecting to see him rejuvenated um and healthy and then them just getting a whole off season to get to know each other, get to play with each other, um a training camp together, and then the full 82 game season. I think it’s going to give them enough time to mesh really well. But I think what De’Aran Fox is really going to do, he’s going to elevate the San Antonio Spurs on the offensive side of the ball. He’s going to take them to that next level because now we have a player alongside Victor Wimbeyama that’s going to attract some real gravity. A type of player that’s going to attract three, four, five players trying to um trying to defend him. And that’s what Victor Wimbeyama needs um needs next to him. Especially as a big man in this league. as a big man, you always want somebody that can relief you some easy buckets cuz them easy buckets get your confidence up. It gets you going and it makes everything else easier. So, I think that’s going to help Victor Winyama out a lot. And then it’s ob um it’s evident that De’aran Fox is and he’s a type of guy that is an offensive engine. You can build your offense around him. You can run your offense around him. We look at the Sacramento Kings over these last two or three years. They have had historic NBA offenses and that was being led by De’Aran Fox. They just struggled on the defensive side of the ball which is why their offense didn’t make them that um that successful. But it did end in a very long playoff drought for the Sacramento Kings. But Darren Fox, four out of these last five seasons, he’s been averaging 25 points per game. So this is what I’m really um excited about for the San Antonio Spurs. is going to open so much up for this offense cuz they have done a great job drafting offensive pieces over these last couple years. Kevin Johnson can score the basketball. Del Devin Facil can score the basketball, but they’re not that offensive engine. They’re not going to draw two or three guys like Victor Winyama and um De’aran Fox. So, whenever you can have two of these type of guys on your team, it does wonders for you on the offensive side of the ball. So I think Devin Vel, Kell Johnson, um um Stefan Castle, Harrison Barnes, all all of these guys are going to be benefiting from that gravity that um De’Arren Fox that Dearan Fox and Victor Mimyama create as individuals. Now, when it comes to these guys actually playing on the basketball court, I think they’re going to connect really well. And what I’m really looking forward to is the twoman game between these guys, aka the pick and roll. And I think Victor Winyama and De’aran Fox, they’re going to be able to um they’re going to be able to uniquely have a bunch of different counters to a lot of pick and roll coverages to the NBA because both of these guys as individuals, they have some spectacular skill sets. When we look at De’Arren Fox, we all know what separates him apart from um a lot of his peers in the NBA is his speed and athleticism. And what makes him a dangerous scorer is that he’s supremely skilled. And I give De’Arren Fox a lot of credit. and um I became a fan of him. I was in high school when him and Lonzo were um playing their their freshman years at college basketball and Lonzo was one of the hypeest people in the country and I just remember De’aran Fox giving them some crazy work in the NCAA tournament. And ever since then, I’ve been a huge fan of De’Aran Fox and he has a lot of hoop swag as well. He’s a lefty. We all know how much cooler lefty hand basketball players look on the basketball court. So, I’ve been watching him for a very long time and he has gotten so much better and to become a guy that averages 25 points per game. Um, he built his game outside of his athleticism. He has a mid-range game that is money now. He has a very soft touch on the rim. His float game is really good. And then also, he made a respectable three-point shot for himself. And then to tie all of this up together, he’s still a point guard with point guard skills. elite handle on the basketball, elite speed with um speed with ball, change of pace. Best part of his game is his ability to get downhill and finish around the rim. And then also he can run the pick and roll, he can score in isolation. He can do it all. He’s an offensive juggernaut. And then we look at his counterpart Victor Wimyama as an individual on the offensive side of the on the offensive side of the ball. Literally something we never seen before. Victor Wimbeyama, 7 foot4, um, elite, crazy wingspan, comfortable bringing the basketball up, comfortable making moves on the perimeter with the basketball in his hands, comfortable taking step back threes, taking catch and shoot threes. Very athletic. He’s a rim runner in the pick and roll game. He can catch it and finish. He can catch it. He has a face up game. He can do He can do it all on the offensive side of the ball. He can catch lobs. um whatever whatever you need offensively, Victor Mimyama, he can provide it. So, we have these two guys and then also another dynamic to this uh we get that classic guard and big duo, a dynamic guard and a dynamic big that always um spells a recipe for success in NBA history. But I’m looking at these guys and how their pick and roll game is going to be really good. I think with the Aaron Fox being such a force getting downhill being able to finish and then Victor Winyama being a true stretch five, having a true stretch five could be such an advantage um in the NBA because bigs don’t like to be on the perimeter. They love to hover around the rim. It’s just natural to them because guys at their position usually can’t shoot the three-point shots. So, I’m looking at this pick and this pick and roll with De’Aran Fox being able to turn corners and get downhill so fast. is going to put opposing teams in a real tricky situation if you don’t um um because you don’t want to play up in the pick and roll against De’Aran Fox because he’s just going to blur right past your bid unless you have to load everything up and once defenses are loading everything up. Dear Fox, Victor Winyama, they’re smart enough to get reads off of that. We know what kind of system the San Antonio Spurs are. They express ball movement. So, I’m looking at that. And then also if that big is in the drop coverage now you have Victor Wimyama. Victor Wmanyamu can pop to the three-point line, but he just can’t pop. He can also put the basketball on the floor and become um a threat from that point. So, um I’m looking at that twoman game. I think it’s going to cause a lot of problems for opposing teams. And then also, it’s going to get their teammates a lot of looks as um a lot of a lot more easier looks as well. So, um the San the San Antonio Spurs, they know how to they know how to put teams together. They know how to be successful. They went to the playoffs 22 straight years. They won five NBA championships. And we all know the San Antonio Spurs, if they were playing a team that you liked in the playoffs, it was going to be a long, long seven game series because they are always dangerous. So, I expect with the way that they’ve been drafting with um loving all the guys that they have, Stefon Castle, um of course, Wimi, Jeremy Sohan, um Carter Bryant, who was drafted this year, Dylan Harper, who was drafted this year. You still have Stefan Castle and then you still have guys that’s becoming a little bit more mature that has been serving as role players for the San Antonio Spurs, but we know they’re just a little bit better than that with Kevin Johnson and Devin Vil. So I expect the San Antonio Spurs, a healthy San Antonio Spurs, a motivated San Antonio Spurs to be making a lot of noise in the Western Conference next season.
