Quentin Grimes considering SHORT-TERM deal with Sixers?
Welcome to the PHLY Sixers podcast presented by Rothman Orthopedics. Visit rothmanorththo.comphly along with Kyle Newbeck. I’m Devon Given and Ethan here with us hanging out producing the show. We got to talk about Quinton Grimes and the latest report. Kyle from Jake Fischer, our good buddy, friend of the show, Jake Fischer from Bleacher Report and Markstein Substack as well. Go check out Jake Fischer. And Jake talked about in a a recent uh just recently discussing how the Quinton Grimes saga as it uh continues to roll on may look more along the lines of something that Derek has been preparing people for and that might be the shorter term deal for Quinton Grimes. So um what might that look like Kyle? the one that I know we can reference the rumor there was another rumor out there of Cam Thomas as we’ve mentioned Cam Thomas from the Brooklyn Nets Josh Giddy from the Chicago Bulls and Jonathan Kaminga from the Golden State Warriors all four restricted free agents having trouble right now finding a deal that they like and as far as Quinton Grimes goes we’ll get into that but the rumor that was out there for Cam Thomas first it was somewhere that he was looking for that $30 million or hundred million dollar deal from the Brooklyn Nets or anywhere else. And in this case, the latest for him is the Nets offering him two years, 14 million a year annually, which would be a $28 million deal. Clearly, he’s not happy about that. And is that something that we may have to look at as far as being offered, or is that way too low of what we think Daryl Moy and the Sixers are offering Quinton Rimes at this point? Yeah. So that’s that’s the tough thing, Devon, is my read on this whole situation has been that it’s not that Quinton doesn’t want to be in Philadelphia. It’s not that the Sixers don’t want him here. Like all signs point to they’ll get a deal done. They’re just far apart on what the valuation is that that Grimes and his representation have been asking for lots of money. And so Jake now a couple of different times has reported something to the effect of and maybe maybe this will end up being a shorter term deal. Now if I had to guess Devon rather than that deal that maybe Cam Thomas is being offered in Brooklyn I think something that sounds like a middle ground to me would be a three-year deal where it’s a two plus one, right? So you get at least two years of some form of stability and then that third year is an option of some sort. I I would say Grimes would probably push for it on his end. The Sixers would probably push for their own option obviously if just in case things don’t work out. Although I don’t think there’s a lot of downside risk on a two to threeyear deal with them. Um, but frankly, like I would be a little surprised on both sides of it, just on a logical basis. Not based on the reporting, not based on what’s out there. I would think both sides would want to get a longer term deal done. I think the Sixers on their end, if you can get him under contract for four years, for example, that gives you a long runway with a guy that showed a lot last year and even before he got to Philadelphia, had grown this reputation as this is a guy who at least can be a three and player who at least like makes threes, can put it on the floor and create for himself a little bit that now has shown a lot more upside as an individual shot creator. Oh, by the way, can also defend both positions in the back court. Like that’s a And he’s still And he’s only 25 years old. Yeah. So that’s a player that for the duration of the contract, barring injury, is going to bring good value to your team. So on the Sixers end, you want the the longer term as long as it’s not, hey, we’re paying an exorbitant amount of money to get this guy on the team. Now, on Grimes’s side, if he doesn’t push for the years, then I sort of think at this point he we would be hearing things that are more along the lines of maybe he’ll take the qualifying offer, right? That he just says, “I’m going to bet on myself again,” right? And I still don’t think we’re hearing much on that front. I think Cam Thomas bringing his name up again, Devon, I think we’ve heard more about him as a potential qualifying offer guy where he says, “Look, I’ll roll it into next year. The Nets are still a rebuilding team with low expectations.” And so you could say, “All right, I’m going to get opportunities even with all these 17 guards they drafted and I’ll probably play through Jun.” Yeah, I’ll play Cam Thomas ball no matter what happens, no matter who else is here, and I’ll bet on myself. I think it’s a little diceier for Quinton Grimes. And so, I think if you can get a a longer term deal, at least at fair value, that’s a a good setup. I guess what I’m struggling with is what is fair value for Quinton Grimes, right? because he didn’t settle for 9 or 10 million before the year, but now we’re hearing things like, oh, 25 million a year or 30 million a year. Then when numbers like that get thrown out there, it’s like you’re losing me there. Where are we still at a point, Devon, where you think somewhere in that 15 to 20 range is fair if it’s on a short term? And do you think that ultimately will get it done as we get deeper into this off season on the shorter term 15 to 18? Yes. Because as you was lay as you were laying it out there two plus one I’m sitting there calculating man is he going to get $20 million you know for one year or over the two years he’s getting two for 40 over the course of those f first two years opts out in that final one. Is that what he’s going to get? And even then, I’m like, I’m still capped out at 18. And that’s no disrespect to Quint Grimes because I think he’s a darn good player. He showed me a lot during that time. But I just think betting on himself again is a really, really tricky situation for him after what he’s shown. Yes, that has boosted your value from that 910 that maybe Dallas was offering, but you’re sitting in a totally different bracket now where you have won and maybe you’re not going to be comfortable with your situation after year one or after year two, but you’re still with two years remaining sitting on a really good number that is movable if that is your desire to leave Philadelphia because you don’t like what’s going on in the direction that the Sixers are headed in that time and what your role is that’s still a pretty good number where it can be moved. So, I still think it’s in his best interest to take that long-term anywhere from that 15 to 18 and you’re still betting on yourself in the sense of I have to go out here and prove it. Stay a starter. I got these two kids behind me that are trying to take my minutes. I have to go here and ball out while VJ Edgecomb and Jared McCain are right behind me. That’s incentive right there as well. and you have found and you have found a home. You’re no longer being moved from New York and Detroit to Dallas and then to Philadelphia in the course of four years, four different teams. You found a home where it is still a playoff team as at least for right now and who knows what that looks like during the duration of those first two years. So I I I agree with you where I don’t know where it is, but if it’s in that 15 to 18 over the course of those four years and you get a 60 plus million dollar deal, you bet and you won. And it’s okay to feel that way. You walk away with the chips, buddy. Walk away with the chips. So here’s here’s what I look up Dennis Shruder and Nerland Noel again and and say, you know what, you got you’re right. I’ll take it. Let’s rock and roll. Here I am. All right. So, let me ask you another quick followup then, Devon. If it ends up, for whatever reason, that they say it’ll be a two-year deal, does your position change on the amount of dollars a year you’re willing to give him? Right? Because I I think if if it gets shorter, you could more easily justify, you know, we’ll pay this guy more. Like maybe you pay 20 million a year rather than 15 to 18 because, you know, if it doesn’t work out this year, then it’s just the next season he’s on a $20 million expiring contract and it’s not something that’s this big anchor around your neck. So, do you think would that materially change your offer or like your threshold of where you’re willing to go? I mean, I still sit there and say, “Damn, Quint Grimes is getting $20 million a year.” But I understand it because of what happened with Kenya Martin a year ago with that balloon payment of what it looked like. But then I go back to JJ Reic when he got his oneplus ones and I mean his one-year deal was at like 23 and whatever he got it at the next year. you understood it because JJ Reic was a playoff performer that you understood, all right, I got it. We haven’t seen, as much as I like Quinton Grimes and willing to give him $18 million over the course of a four-year deal annually, I just still haven’t seen it in the postseason where it’s it’s meaningful. So, while I’ll stand up 10 toes and defend Quinton Grimes against everyone who’s saying it, yeah, but he did it when it didn’t matter and they only won 24 games and how many games did he really contribute to? I still say he can play and I still say he’s worth bringing back as part of this four guard rotation and maybe with the advantage right now over those two young guys that I mentioned as a starter, but I still haven’t seen it in the postseason. I’m banking on the fact that this is going to show itself in the postseason, too. Because on our Friday podcast, Kyle, you mentioned Daryl my holding on to 12 a little bit too long because we’ve seen this already. We know what that looks like. And and it was really about when we discuss the Sixers and a lot of these players, most Sixer fans are saying, “Great, I see what you do in 82. What is this going to mean for those four rounds that I need you?” Nobody around here is really worried about the 82 at this point except for Right. Exactly. And then 12 didn’t do it in those in those. And that’s to your point of, hey, Daryl Moy, why are you hanging on him for the four five? Just move on. And we’ve seen it. We know what we’re going to get. In this case, we don’t know what it looks like for Quentyn Grimes in those playoff situations in that atmosphere. And we got I think he did he get to the playoffs in New York? Maybe once. Maybe. But okay, he was a rookie. He was young. That’s what you got. Now you’re on a long-term deal. Good money. Are we going to get the type of production that we need in the postseason to help win four out of seven in any particular round and then advance this past the second into the third and hopefully the fourth for the Philadelphia 76ers? We don’t have that answer. And will that money come up because he did not perform in those situations for the Philadelphia 76ers. So I say right now I don’t knock anybody and we’ve been saying this from the very beginning. I don’t knock anybody for wanting and asking for what they feel they are deserving of. But at some point, you and your agent finally come to the realization of this is a really good deal. Let me take this now and on my final deal, whenever that may be in these four years, I will get another one and that will be my other big money deal where I’ve done pretty well for myself. Yeah. So, I I look at it at this point, Devon, I’m with you on the range. If it’s a long-term deal, I think four for 60 is just about perfect. I think you could talk me into like four for 72, right? 18 per. Like I that’s more than I want to pay, but I I think given that it would help with trade for salary matching and things like that, like you could talk me into that. I could go up some I think on a shorter term deal. I’d be okay with 20 per if it’s two years. But I also don’t think that’s what the Sixers should be pushing for, right? What you want is someone who can be over the next three, four years a long-term contributor, a two-way player, all that, and also retain some trade options with him, right? So whether he ultimately settles for what I think it would work for the Sixers, I don’t know because I do think they’re pretty far apart right now. But a lot of offseason left to get this sorted out. I believe he has until I want to say October 1st is the day that you have to uh make the decision on on the qualifying offer and whatnot. So, we’re going to see, but I don’t think it’s going to end anytime soon, Devon. So, uh an update from our friend Jake Fischer, but everybody just hold on for dear life. If it makes you feel anybody any better everybody, at least on his Instagram story, he posted himself dunking and he was doing so in the Sixers uniform. Who knows? I don’t know what that means. Athletes are funny. They send subliminal messages, right? And maybe this is a message of everybody. I’m trying trying to figure it out. We’ll see if we can get there. That’ll do it for us on this PHY Sixers podcast along with Kyle Newbeck and Ethan. I’m Devon. We’ll be back with you on Monday, 300 PM. Maybe there’s a resolution, maybe not on the Quinton Grimes side. Either way, we’ll talk to you on Monday at three. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
A recent report says Quentin Grimes could end up settling for a shorter deal with the Sixers. Would that be the right thing for Daryl Morey and Co., is it likely that Grimes would pass up long-term security, and what would you pay Quentin Grimes?

Given we have Maxey as the other starting guard, then it is a MUST to have a Grimes-type who can score but more importantly can DEFEND!!! Fortunately for the Sixers all the NBA teams are capped so there is no much leverage for Grimes BUT they should not penny pinch him bc they will not create good feelings so they should do the right thing and offer about 2-3 years @ $17m – $20m per… This way he is guaranteed a decent amount vs signing the one yr $8.75 mill qualifying in hopes of UFA next year while still allowing him to explore that route in a few short years but with $30+ million in hand … And you must always consider the injury risk if you want to bet one a year prove it deal… From the Sixers perspective, no matter what his contract will be very tradeable worst case!!!
I want to see grimes back in Philly ,but how long is this going to last??Why is this taking so long?😫😩😫
Start vj and move on
U drafted vj at #3. Start vj or mccain. Get council back or sign vet guard 1 yr deal
RELAX, HE'S A ROOKIE 🏀🏀🏀😱
Move on from him. It’s too risky for his limited time production. Don’t get trapped into another insane contract – we have enough of them.
NO MORE GUARANTEED CONTRACTS!!!
Stop playing, Sign this guy!!!!!!
Give him the 20!!!!! Let's get this ball rolling
Quentin Grimes was a five star all American who finally got the chance and proved himself. He deserves 20+ per.
China has a philosophy of letting the Americans spend the R&D, they copy it and mass produce.
Last year was his first year on the team and he only played like 20 something games. Paul Gorge has never done anything in the playoffs and they gave him 100 million to much. Give Grimes his money 💰.
It's almost August why isn't he signed if they want him
Grimes has one season avg over 15 pts game – on team where half the starters were out most of year with injuries. I never understood why many thought he was getting big pay day.
No more guarantee contracts!
3 years 42 million
Grimes should be happy with 16M x multiple years. He will never get a chance to be a no.1 option averaging 20ppg anywhere, if he tries to get a short-term deal and try FA market again.
Sign 3 years for 50 to 55M, win a championship with us, your next payday will be the best.
The problem is the Sixers pay way more for other players Embid (cough), George (cough), Simmons, (cough) who do a lot less than Grimes. Now grimes asks for $20million and y’all, who’s going to be laughing straight to the bank with another team.
Grimes is better than Maxey!!! There I said it. 😃
Embid has done a whole lot of nothing in the playoffs and yet the Sixers gave him a half billion dollars over the course of his career only behind Steph and LeBron, oh guess who’s next up on the list, his Sixers teammate Paul George. 🫣🙀😱
Jonathan Isaac good defender cant get Lauri Markannen a three pointer shooter.
Cam Thomas (who’s younger and also still unsigned) is worth $20 million a year, not Quentin Grimes. He’s never averaged 20 points in a season. If everyone is healthy, the most he’ll average here is 12 ppg. Let someone else overpay for him.
