Miami Heat Use Roster Spot To Sign Dru Smith To 3-Year Deal | Pelle Larsson Cooks vs Portugal

Welcome on in guys. Tobin here with you and thanks for checking out the channel. You know, in the midst of the we hours here as I am watching a little UFC 319. Um I wanted to get on here and throw down some thoughts on the Drew Smith signing. Was going out on a uh a date night with Mrs. Tobin. See the notification on my phone. Bloop. Drew Smith. he signs a three-year deal to uh remain with the Miami Heat. There was some talk obviously with Drew Smith, he was in a position where he could no longer sign a two-way deal with the Miami Heat. And so, hey, was his time with Miami coming to an end? We know there’s a lot of fondness there from the organization. Uh reportedly, especially from Eric Spolstra, loves the guy and, you know, was coming off of a pretty devastating injury. He blew out his Achilles. I was in the building for that. Blew out his Achilles uh last year against the Brooklyn Nets and it was pretty devastating. Yeah. I mean, it was a devastating thing because it was I really think at the time Drew Smith was probably playing some of his best basketball of his career. You’re like, ah, this guy finally, you know, a lot of people kind of looked at it kind of guy like, why is this guy in the roster? this this this dude, you know, who just plays with just incredible motor, but he doesn’t have the prettiest offensive style. What is that? What what what is this? And you really started to see the fruits of his labor come through because he already had a devastating injury the year before where that stupid ass court in Cleveland that is elevated off, he he tore his ACL. So he was already come back from that and then boom you have this Achilles injury and you know yeah you’re wondering it’s like you know that’s bad ACL then an Achilles what is that comeback going to be like um and and even on the timeline you’re like all right is he going to be back at the start of this year you know all these things are just fair questions we didn’t know and yeah I can’t say I’m a little confused I’m not surprised I’m not even ripping I I’m just, you know, a couple things have meed with the signing. Not surprised because know the fondness that the organization has for him. I do think the organization, I’m not saying this is the reason they made the move, but in a 24 hours where everybody was like, man, what you guys did to Haywood Highmith was kind of heartless. Like you just a guy who was a developmental project, you guys just kind of dumped on the Brooklyn Nets for nothing. That’s that’s pretty cold bloodooded. You got Jimmy Butler and and Draymond Green making fun of this. Remember, you know, Jimmy reportedly freaked out because at at the shoot around they announced that Haywood was replacing him in the starting lineup. So, you have this move that seems pretty heartless and now you replace it with a very heartful move of signing a guy that just everybody loves in in Drew Smith and just seems like an A+ dude. Um, but it is a little confusing. I’m not going to sit here and and just ignore the fact that, you know, it is the deepest part of the team is the Miami Heat guard depth. And it didn’t really feel like if they were going to use to stay under the tax one spot, why use it on Drew? You know, it’s just it’s a little confusing to me because you look at the guard depth. All right, we got Tyler, we got Norm, we got DaVon, who is a new wrinkle into the Drew Smith arc. When Drew Smith got hurt, Dav was not on the Miami Heat. So, you have that defensive first dog point guard who’s now already on the roster. You copy that with Pella, who is basically what we would think is the first insurance policy after DaVon goes down. Then you drafted a point guard and Casper’s Yakonis and you still have Terry Roier on the roster. I mean, I think if the Heat could be any clearer, they have no interest in playing Terry Roier. I don’t know what else they would have to do. But yeah, it was just a little like that’s where they’re going to go with their roster spot because, you know, while I could say, okay, well, DaVon is a pulled hammy away from then them needing a defensive point guard or a true point guard to kind of fill that void. One, I don’t know if Drew Smith’s going to be ready to go, and two, I don’t know what he’s going to look like off an ACL and an Achilles defensively. Hopefully he looks awesome, but I don’t know. So, I’m a little confused by it. Um, and you look at the big depth, they got Bam, they got Wear, they got Nico, and then they got Vlad Golden on a two-way deal. Um, you know, so they could kind of ride that. I think everybody was wondering, hey, are they going to go Kai Jones here? Are they going to add another big? Was that the reason that they got rid of Haywood Highmith? you know, so that was certainly, I think, on people’s mind when that deal went down, like, well, they kind of have something else. I didn’t necessarily think that it was going to be for Drew Smith. Um, so, and then you look at the wings, you got Wiggins, Keshad, Hime Hakez Jr., Simone Fonteio. I think I got everybody there. I don’t think I missed anybody with the uh with the uh this whole thing. And I do think like look by the way I think Drew Smith was probably on his way to a standard deal last year. Remember Keshot was on a two-way deal the way Drew was playing he was probably going to get a standard deal and then it ended up he got the injury and they and they signed Keshaw to a standard two-way deal. So now they got Drew on a on a three-way deal with only one of the years being guaranteed. Um, so yeah, and look, he’s not making a lot of money. So, I’m not It’s hard to rip it, but it is. Yeah, I I think just the word is confusing because you don’t know his health status. You don’t know necessarily where he’s going to fall into the mix of everything, but you do know the coach likes him and you know what he he brings to the table as far as uh, you know, his defense. doesn’t want a ton of shots will set his teammates up. This is about the right stuff. So, but with the development of Pella Lararsson and the acquisition and resigning of DaVon Mitchell, you know, it just it does feel more like a heart signing than it does necessarily a need signing. But that being said, you know, look, it’s not like he’s going to be a useless player for this team. they uh you’re always gonna need guys who can go be tenacious defenders on guys, especially if the foul counts get up. So, I I guess there’s that thought process to it. Speaking of Pella, by the way, what a demon. I mean, this guy is no matter what the league, no matter what the game, this guy is going to put his head down, he is going to draw contact and he is going to get to the free throw line. Pella Lararsson once again was an absolute storm. I mean, the guy just is like, “Oh, there’s contact for me to get. I’m gonna go I’m gonna go out here and I’m going to uh just do that and I’m going to score baskets in the paint and I’m going to I’m going to be intense. I’m going to dive all over the floor.” And that’s exactly what he has been doing for Sweden. He’s had some big games. Sweden maybe necessarily hasn’t had the best results, you know, over this. They’re not like Serbia. They’re not a powerhouse. And I do think that they’re leaning on Pella a lot. But I think that’s all great experience for him. And I’m just like watching these highlights of him. I did not watch the game like I did the the Yovic game, but I was just like, Jesus, man. Every time I see this guy, no matter what the game is, he he just feels like he is absolutely, you know, drawing contact, frustrating guys. Um, and that was the case with uh with Sweden and and they they lost, but he was once again their I believe their leading scoreer. I’m getting the box score right here. O, this FEA live stats, man. Sometimes they got the uh they get a little squirly with their stuff, but yeah, he was the only guy for Sweden today. Scored double digits. Five of eight, three, two of four from downtown, five of eight from the free throw line. And uh let’s see, steal, block, three assists, did have three turnovers, but yeah, nobody else can put it in the basket for that team. So, he he’s really getting the experience of like, hey, go carry us, Pella. Go do what you can do. And he’s trying to do it. But, uh it has been uh it has been fun to see. It has been fun watching this stuff on the international stage with the uh the Miami Heat. But he’s another one where I’m like, well, you know, with his development with DaVon back, you know, I don’t necessarily see the minutes for Drew Smith, but then again, you know, I don’t think they want to rush him back either. I think they did want to do right by him. They wanted to take care of him. um you you you follow up a day that seems a little cold with a day that’s a little bit warmer for your franchise and you know you’re hopeful that you don’t have to rush now Drew Smith back he can come back when he when he’s healthy to come back and when called upon you feel like if he’s if he’s right physically he can provide some things for you that the uh the coach is going to trust him with but um so great for Um, and it’s going to be interesting to see where this whole depth chart falls once we get to training
