Miami Heat Sign Dru Smith To A 3-Year, $7.9M deal
The Miami Heat are bringing back Drew Smith. It was a fan favorite, a pit bull on the defensive end before DaVon Mitchell came to town. And DaVon Mitchell was kind of brought in. Obviously, they got him in the trade, which they got him for basically nothing. But part of the reason why they were interested, why their interest had peaked to get somebody like DaVon Mitchell was due to the impact that Drew Smith was having for this team last year on a two-wig. guy who seemed like it was going to be converted into a standard contract. He had torn his ACL the year prior on like a weird play, missed the entirety of the year basically, and then comes back and is playing great and pops his Achilles. And he was averaging six points, 51% shooting, 53% from three, one and a half steals in 14 games last year. He gets a three-year, $7.9 million deal. I love this. I really do. Drew Smith. I’ve talked to him. I actually interviewed him last year before he got hurt when he was starting to bust up onto the scene as he was someone that I really enjoyed his aim. I thought he was someone who is an NBA player. I know that he’s the same height as me. He’s listed 6’2, but he’s probably more 6’1 out of Missou 27 years old. He’s played for Sou Falls, Miami, the Brooklyn Nets a little bit, then came back to Miami. And he’s someone that in my opinion, if you look at the current roster, they have two two-ways filled in Myron Gardner and Vlad Golden, which it seems like Gabe Madson and Ethan Thompson are competing for that last two-way spot. And if you look at standard roster spots, they technically have two roster spots open. So maybe one of Gabe Matson, Ethan Thompson, if they don’t get make get a two-way, they take the 14th roster spot, and this would mean Drew Smith’s the 15th. But I would expected that they would keep one roster spot open for and go 14 players deep and probably cut one of Gabe Matson or Ethan Thompson whoever doesn’t get the two-way because right now standard contracts are Keshan Johnson, Terry Rosier, Kasparis Yakatronis, Nicole Yovic, Simone Fonteio, Haime Hakez, Pa Larson, DaVon Mitchell, Khalil Wear, Bonabio, Norman Powell, Andrew Wiggins, and Tyler Herro. So Drew Smith will probably be competing with Kasparius Yakonis, Terry Rosier, Pel Larson, and maybe a little bit of Himemez for some minutes in the rotation. And look, I think Drew is somebody who can play phenomenally so far in 38 NBA games total, 15 minutes a night. Obviously, this past season was the most minutes that he got, but in 15 minutes a night, 46% from the field, 42% from three, two rebounds, just under two assists a game over a steal a night and four and a half points a game. Really solid defender. Like, he is a diamond in the rough. So, for a Miami Heat squad that, you know, homegrown talent right here and Drew Smith. So, I think they’re an organization that they’re valuing what they have in him and they know this Achilles injury. Yeah, obvious it happened early in the year, so I expect he’s going to be available, but I also do believe that it’s not an injury that’s going to affect his style of play. Like he is not reliant on that in ways other players are. So to me that if you had like a concern that oh like why would they bring in a guy coming off an Achilles injury, he’s not affected by in the same way as or going to be affected. He was already a below the rim finisher. So to me, I thought, okay, like let’s roll with it. It makes sense if that’s the case and it’s not going to zap him of the athleticism that gave him an edge. And yeah, let me hear your thoughts, Joe. That’s basically going to be it for me today, guys. I If there was anything else you guys would have liked to have heard, let me know. As always, like, comment, and subscribe. Ciao.

I don't know much about how much money the heat have left but so you think we have enough money to still get a backup big without being the luxury tax
