Jeremy Sochan’s Contract Year | SSPN Clips
You know, let’s just jump into this since we’re talking about contracts. I’ll pull this up. I mentioned this in conversation earlier. So, obviously, this doesn’t have the updated salary that we just put on the screen for De’arren Fox, but pretty much everything else uh is accounted for here on the graphic. If you’re listening on podcast, we have the Spurs payroll up uh on the screen. And as you can see, Ethan, the only player, well, Kelly Oolen, other than other than Harrison Barnes and Kelly Oolen, let me put it to you this way. The only player on the team who is 30 or younger and is going in to a contract year or like the last year of their contract is Jeremy Sohan. Uh he’s got the team option of 7 mil this year. So, I mean, this is his extension year. We we’ve talked so much about Jeremy and all the different context. I don’t need to repeat that with all the different situations that that he’s been put into, but kind of with everything that’s happened over the past two years, Ethan, whether it be the De’arren Fox trade, acquiring Victor Webbyama, completely like reframing the way that we’re looking at how the Spurs are going to build and operate moving forward in comparison to the past couple of years that we’ve been doing this podcast. Um, it’s it’s going to be a make orb break year for for Jeremy Sohan here. like this, it really comes down to this season. Um, and it kind of snuck up on us in the sense that this is it, like he doesn’t have, you know, a contract after this season as much as he did kind of feel like a building block of this Spurs rebuild. What are your thoughts on just that circumstance this season for him? And you know what, I might as well throw this in here. You know, maybe something that could have been beneficial for Jeremy when it came to preparing for this season is playing for Poland in FIA Euro Basket as one of their main players and being like a star player type of role. Those would have been, you know, reps that he won’t be getting in San Antonio, just to be completely blunt, but that just came out also, not to change subjects here, that he had a calf strain and he will not play through that. It doesn’t seem like it’s serious, but we know how the Spurs are. You know, there’s one little nick. Hey, we’re going to bring you home. We want you to be ready for training camp. Um, but again, as you kind of cobble that together with his injury for Feba Euro basket and then the significance of this season for him, not just for his career, but also, you know, for us evaluating the team and him potentially being on the team moving forward, what are your thoughts on this contract year for Jeremy? It’s going to be a big year for him for sure. Um he needs to have offensively one of the best years or he has to have the best year of his career. I mean there’s no excuses for Jeremy unfortunately anymore. Um I think last year he was off to a really really great start and then with injuries being in and out of the lineup and then inconsistent rotations he kind of fell off a little bit. Uh and then obviously being on the bench at the backup center was no help. But this year he should be a full-time power forward. Whether or not he starts or not is still kind of questioned. Um but either way, he should be playing his natural position and has every reason to to succeed um this season and with the way rotations are going to play out. However, I still think no matter what, I still think he comes back to the Spurs. I I think they get a contract done. I just I have no facts to base that on. I just have a feeling like he feels like he wants to be in San Antonio. He fits perfectly next to Wimby long term. Defensive-minded guy that you you kind of need those to to win basketball games. week. He scared me. Um, and uh, even if he goes crazy, Jude, I he doesn’t strike me as a guy that’s going to earn like an insane deal if I’m being completely honest from anybody. Interesting. I guess what I would say is maybe I think there’s a potential that there’s somebody else out there in the league that does really like Jeremy Sohan and thinks he can be a great glue guy, you know, kind of in just his role. You know, we’ve compared him to Dennis Rodman. Um, obviously there’s there’s differences in their game and play style, but just in the sense that he does all the dirty work. Like you need a Jeremy Sohan type of guy who’s, you know, less finesse and more just kind of like brute on your team to go in there and do all the things that, you know, nobody else wants to do. So I I think that could be the case. But also what I agree with though, as much as I throw that out there, I think, you know, and this wasn’t something I’d really thought about yet, but I think Jeremy would be willing to come back on the to the Spurs. he would be willing to take a discount to come back to the Spurs specifically. And you saw him out in France as well. I don’t know if you saw this, but I can’t remember if this was a week ago or two weeks ago, but WBY did like a chess basketball event in Paris where everybody came and played basketball and then also like played chess on the court. It was like a whole tournament and everything. Like Jeremy flew out to France to just hang out and be there to support Victor. Um, you know, like you mentioned, you kind of saw some of their chemistry in the front court uh at the beginning of this season. I think they’ve kind of had a chemistry and a friendship, you know, kind of since they’ve got there. They’re both guys, you know, who have experience living in Europe as much as Jeremy definitely has his American connections with playing at Baylor and then being born in Oklahoma as Winky. Winky was here for the Jeremy conversation, dude. He he knew this was this was an important this is an important topic and that this is this is a big year for him. Um, but with all that being said, man, again, I’m just I’m really I I think that he does come back to the Spurs. I’m with you there. Um, and I think that there there could be a chance that that he kind of takes uh a little bit of a discount. Um, just because of, you know, the relationships that Spurs that the Spurs build with players and kind of the connections that they make and why, you know, you see so many specific guys. Like for example, not to I’m not trying to compare Jeremy Sohan to to to Manu or anything, but like you saw those guys, you saw a ton of guys during the Spurs history take pay cuts, you know, to stay with them because they just wanted to be a part of the organization. And I think Jeremy could definitely be one of those guys. I just don’t think he’s going to get 30 million. I agree with that. I do agree with that. But that that’s kind of where that’s kind of the range that he might be expecting because like Trey Murphy is 27 next year then 2931. Devin has 27 next year on his extension. Uh Isaiah Hartenstein had 28.5 million on his contract. Freaking Derek White’s getting 30 plus million. So like if I I don’t I don’t think he’s done enough to earn that deal. No. If we can get him for 25 or less, like Jaden McDaniels is earning 26 million next year, then 28, then 30 on his last year of his contract. I think Jaden McDaniels is probably a pretty good comparison. I don’t know how much younger uh he we are than him. How old is he exactly? Um I think he’s a little bit older than Jeremy. Like he’s around I think he’s a two years older than Jeremy. Yeah. Um, so I I I think that might be kind of the range that maybe the market dictates because there’s very similar players. Um, but you can also make the argument that, you know, Jeremy hasn’t done nearly as much in terms of impacting winning as a guy like Jam Daniels has. So, for sure, we’ll see how that pans out. I still want him to be a Spur for all the reasons that you mentioned. I I I’ve always been a huge fan of Jeremy Sohan. Uh, but I don’t know if I’m willing to pay him 30 plus. I think that’s uh a very fair take on on the 30 plus aspect of things. Um, man, it will be interesting. It will be interesting for sure. Of course, this season will also have an impact on this his play there. Um, so we will definitely be keeping an eye on that as the season progresses, Ethan. But like you said, I want him to be a part of the Spurs long term. And I think with the way that we’ve built out this roster, I I think that, you know, what he brings when I talked about doing the dirty work, I think it can mesh and fit a lot better. And I know that maybe people hearing that think about this season and the tape that they saw and they’re like, “How does that translate?” But again, that goes back to him being matched up against Zack Edy or Alex Len or somebody who’s got four to five inches on him. He can’t actually play his natural role where at the beginning of the season he’s going for, you know, 15 and 10 or more basically every game playing next to Victor, which I feel like I’ve repeated a thousand times in the past 24 months. You know what I’ll say this month? I if if those jump shot videos from the summer are fact and he comes into the season shooting 35 plus percent from three, I’ll give him $35 million because of everything else that he does so well for us. On a complete serious note, that’s another reason why him getting injured at FIBO was a little sad. You were going to get to see uh if there was some legitimacy to the form change and stuff like that. But there was one other question that escaped me, Ethan, and now I’ve just remembered it as we wrap up this topic. In a world where Jeremy, this is Jeremy Sohan’s last season as a San Antonio Spur, just in that theoretical world, what do you think the reason why would be larger role and more money elsewhere be my guess? I think that’s a very very fair way to put it because the only other thing I was thinking of was you know maybe not being satisfied with what he’s doing here and wanting a bigger role. So there you go. That’s that’s really the only other thing that comes to mind other than other than a bag. So right

I think 20+ up to 30 is a wonderful deal for Jeremy. I still believe that Spurs has made a promise to Jeremy to develop him long-term. Regardless of how much he gets, he will outperform his contact (fingers crossed!). All I want is a full year for Sochan to play the real 4, with assignments that make sense for his strengths.
We owe him that.
