Kasparas Jakucionis A BUST? NBA Scout SLAMS Miami Heat Rookie
[Music] Is Casperus Yakonis already a bust? I know it’s a bit ridiculous, but an NBA scout said something crazy about Yak that I wanted to talk about. I’m Nick Rolloff. This is the Heat Report by Chad Sports and that is why we’re making this video because I am really high on Casper Yakonis and we’ll go through my thoughts on Yak and what happened this summer after that he drafted him in this video. But a veteran NBA scout while talking with Barry Jackson uh who covers this team very well on the Miami Herald. He absolutely killed Yakatronis on how he performed in NBA Summer League. I wanted to share what the scout had to say, give my thoughts and reactions. Well, we are in the middle of August and well, there’s not much else to talk about here as we’re still two months away from the season. But before I get into what the scouts said about the Heat’s 20th overall pick, I want to know your thoughts. Do you think Casper Yakonis is going to be a bust? Type Y for yes, type N for no. Might be hard to be a bus at pick 20, but you get the idea. Uh, here is what the NBA scout said on the Heats rookie from Illinois. NBA people I talked to in Las Vegas were killing him. I didn’t have anything nice to say about him. Quickness and shooting were my concerns. Can he beat skilled NBA players off the dribble? He better be able to make his shots. His play was disappointing, but I’m not ready to judge. He’s very young at 19. And listen, I understand that Yakonis’ performances during NBA Summer League, whether it is the California Classic or the Vegas Summer League, they were pretty bad. He really only had one really good game, one solid game, and the rest were pretty meh. But we have just seen time after time after time how summer league struggles or summer league successes don’t mean a damn thing when it comes to their NBA career. I mean, look at these five guys. We’re talking about an MVP, a allNBA level guard, one of the best players to ever play basketball. Well, two of them, and Curry and LeBron, all shooting and struggling with their scoring in NBA summer league. While we see players like Lonzo Ball, I hate that I have to use him an example, become MVP of the summer league, yet have an underwhelming NBA career, there are many other examples of players that lit up summer league and struggled. So to me, using summer league as a baseline on if a player will be good or bad in the association is a bit egregious. But as devil advocates to my own thoughts, it was pretty hard to watch, especially in his first three games while playing in the California Classic. I don’t really have to add much to the numbers that you see on screen. That’s as bad as things get. Now, he did find his stride in Vegas. The first game he played in, he had about five threes and had 24 points. He was able to put together a really strong final game in the summer league as well, averaging 15. You see the efficiency numbers in Vegas? Sure. Was the summer league rough for Yak? It absolutely was. But when you think about the grand scheme of things in Yakonis and in those games, there were more positives in my opinion than negatives that will ultimately translate. Like when you factor in everything you want to see in a Heat basketball player, it’s hard not to just truly believe that what we saw from Yak is something that like we would be excited about. We should be. and we’ll talk more about it in a second, but subscribe to the channel and join us here at the Heat Report because it is in the middle of August yet we’re still making daily heat content for all y’all. Hit that sub button. Let’s get to 24,400 subscribers on today’s show. The number one thing that I saw from Yakonis that made me happy was his effort and doing anything to win. The stuff that you can’t quantify on the box score and in the stat sheet. He was diving for loose balls. he was making the extra rotation on defense. Like he is a guy who when I watch him play, it tells me he hates losing more than he likes winning, which are the people that I want to have on my basketball team. Because fun fact about yours truly, I’m a bit of a hater. And I what I mean by that, I hate to see other people win cuz I’m not winning. So, if a player hates to lose more than they like to win, which is how I view it because I don’t like seeing other people be happy, well, that’s what I want on my team. So, I like that he has that competitive spirit and fieress in him. I really like that. The number two, his ability to make the wow passes. Did he turn it over at way too of a high of a rate in college at Illinois? Absolutely. He averaged actually more turnovers than made shots in a couple games. concerning, but I look past it because of his ability to playmake. Like some of the angles that he finds while dishing it out to teammates. It’s unbelievable. And I remember one watching in college and he was driving baseline and it’s like he was going to go for a reverse layup, but instead of a reverse layup, he reverse passes it where it goes completely the other direction. So he’s driving from the right corner and it goes back to the right wing and he’s at the opposing block. Like he’s just got the creativity to find open players. Whether it’s on the perimeter for a catch and shoot three or whether it’s in the middle of traffic, he is an excellent playmaker. And when the game finally slows down for him, he’s going to be able to know when he could pick and choose the spots, when to make a wild pass, when to all right, it’s not open here in the NBA. will hold on to it and reverse it to someone else like but his playmaking creativity and ability is something Miami has lacked for a while and something that I really want to see continue with Casper as Yaka Jonas. Number three, his defense was solid, man. Like when I was scouting Yaka Jonas, the number one concern I had for him was his ability to defend the next level because there is no denying he is not the most fleet of foot. He is not the most athletic guy. He is an ab under the rim type of finisher as well, which is a little bit interesting because he’s 66. So, he’s got size, but he doesn’t really use it when combining it with his athleticism. So, I was concerned if he’d be able to stay in front of guards at the next level. While at summer league, he played excellent defense. He made the right rotations. He stayed in front of his guys for the most part. And his physical nature, which he does like to play with physicality, it just showed on the defensive end. Now, will there be an adjustment period in the regular season? Absolutely. But I like where his defense is at currently right now. And what am I supposed to say about Yakonis when our head coach, someone that I consider a top 10 without a question coach in the NBA history of the league, as well as I would still argue a top three coach in the NBA right now, singing the praise of the rookie. I mean, when Yakonis was struggling during summer league, Spolster was still very complimentary of the Heat Rook, saying that he thinks the struggles in California Classic was a good teaching point for him. They were encouraged by the mental makeup that he had and what he showed. Look, it was uneven offensively. There’s no doubt about it. did a lot of turnovers, some mistakes, but all the intangibles, the defense, hustle plays, passing, all of that he was able to do while having some uneven offensive play. Sometimes that can take the confidence away from a player, but he still found a way to impact the game and impact winning. That’s what our scouts really liked about him as a young player. They watched him a lot more than we did at Illinois, but it’s a lot of those intangibles. I believe in Spo. I believe in our scouting department. Just look at the track record over the last decade. Finding Josh Richardson in the second round, finding Bameio at the 14th pick, Tyler Hero at the 13th pick. You’ve seen Nicole Yoic at 27, Hawkeye, Khal Wear, KL Larson. That it just goes on and on and on in terms of them being able to find good players at good value. Has there been a couple misses? Absolutely. There always are. But I am choosing to believe in our scouting department. I am choosing to believe in Eric Spolstra. And if I’m gonna be quite frank, I’m choosing to believe in myself because I had him ranked number six on my overall big board in this class and the third point guard behind Dylan Harper and Jeremiah Fears. Now, after all the positivity that we’ve had on Casperonis today, in light of what the NBA scout said, I do want to make it clear. I don’t believe this is a perfect prospect. I don’t believe this is a player that is going to come in and contribute right away for this Miami Heat team. There are a lot of obvious concerns. one being that athleticism and if he’s going to be able to beat players off of the dribble with speed. Now, cover your ears, producer Coupe. But there is a player that is top five in the NBA right now, Luca Donuch, that does not beat his opponents with his speed. He does it with his handle, his ability to find angles, and the ability to get to the free throw line as well as hit some step back jumpers. I am not saying that Casper Yakonis is going to be Luca Donuch in the slightest. I am just saying that it is possible to be an elite playmaker, an elite point guard, an elite creator without possessing the elite speed that you see from other point guards like a John Mar, like a dear Fox, like the Anthony Edwards of the worlds. So, yes, there’s concerns, but I will believe that he could find a way to be productive despite them. With that also being said, I do expect Casper Yakonis to get a lot of time in the G-League this upcoming season. We saw Larson get time in the G-League. We saw Nicole Yoic get time in the G-League. We saw KL Wear, I think, play one game in the G- League. I could be mistaken on that. It was a long season. But the point is this. When you look at what the Heat have on their roster, it’s hard to envision a large role for Casper Yaka Jonas right away. Is he ahead of Terry Rosier on the depth chart? Oh, absolutely. But he is trailing Tyler Herro, Norman Powell, and DaVon Mitchell. So, when the Heat are fully healthy, he’s your fourth guard in rotation. Now, if you want to say Norman Powell isn’t a true guard and is really third behind Hero and Davon Mitchell. I’ll buy into that theory. The point is this though, you have a 19-year-old guard that needs to really get reps and needs to work on his game handle and shot making. Is he going to be able to do that to the fullest extent if he’s the 10th or 11th man on this bench playing 5 to 10 minutes a night? No, probably not. So, even though I would like to see Yakonis get NBA run this year, which he will, would it benefit him to get 30 plus minutes a night playing in the G-League, or would it benefit him more to travel with this Heat team and play 5 to 10 minutes a night because he’s fourth in rotation? I’m going to choose the G-League route. Final word on today’s show. I believe in Yakonis. I am not selling stock. In fact, I will buy more stock. Are you selling? Cool. come to Dallas, Texas. I’ll give you my location and I’ll buy it off you firsthand. He is going to be a productive player in the NBA. He is going to be a good player for the Miami Heat. He just cares too much about his body. He cares too much about winning. He cares too much about facilitating for his teammates to where he can’t be bad in my opinion. If I’m wrong, cold takes exposed. You’re welcome for the engagement. That’ll do it for the show. Make sure you do subscribe for more heat content. And if you are still watching, well, you clearly like what we’re bringing to the table to some degree. So, subscribe and I’ll see you tomorrow. Another video. Go Heat. [Music]

Kasparas Jakucionis struggled in a major way during the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas and the California Classic. Jakucionis’ highlights weren’t pretty as the rookie averaged under 10 points per game and shot under 30% from beyond-the-arc.

The Problem with your take…all those 5 guys u mentioned who struggled in summer league ALL have the elite physical tools and athleticism.. even DLo has great physical tools but not the effort… Trae the only exception but he really showed his elite shooting and passing.. Can KJ prove that and lead the team to ECF just like Trae did?
KJ don't have the physical tools ..

I don't think Miami Heat is expecting that KY is the solution for wing game. It takes a while while this player develops so I dont understand why so many comments about him.
Put KJ on the Niko program….. he'll be okay by year 3 or 4. I feel he should convert to SG instead of PG.
N….
I think my expectations would be somewhere in the ballpark of Pritchard/McConnell and I’m happy with that if it turns out that way.
Definitely a bust juxtaposed to your predraft evaluations though.
His turnover rate of 25.4% in college is considered exceptionally high for a guard, even for one with high usage. Some turnovers are linked to high-risk, high-reward passes and attempting plays other players might not try. However, many turnovers also stem from over dribbling at 6'5, forcing passes into crowded lanes, and lapses in clock awareness. Scouting reports indicate his handle and footwork could be tighter, and his athleticism might limit his ability to consistently create separation against NBA-level defenders. Despite these concerns, his high usage at a young age, coupled with a high assist rate, suggests potential for improvement, as seen in other prospects who succeeded despite high turnover rates early in their careers. He possesses elite court vision and playmaking ability, skills that translate well to higher levels of basketball.
Luka is huge and uses his size first and foremost. JK is decent sized but plays smaller than his frame.
If I give you 10 years of drafting only European players. How many Dirk nowitzki's, Luka, joker or Franz Wagners are you going to get.
Theirs a reason the heat did not draft European players for a while.
Brother we signed Dru Smith is that not news????
Miami Heat should draft Jaron Pierre Jr in 1st round next year..
Rule no.1 of Summer League is to be very skeptical of summer league.
Y
He hasn't even played a minute in the league
Hell yeah I said that the moment he got drafted! he is just another slow unathletic white boy just like Tyler Herro minus the good shooting
I understand how a lot of people may feel about him…but first off he's only 19 he was the 20th pick in the draft plus he has some.really good.players ahead of him in the pg position so therefore if anyone is expecting him to be this savior for the heat giving u 20 and 6 every night then it's not gonna happen…once he gets the right people in his corner and as the season goes along then maybe he can become that 20 and 6 guy but for right now realistically it's not happening
calling him a bust when he's the 20th pick is ridiculous. it's not like he's in the top 10. give the kid a chance to prove himself. people are already destroying him even before he could compete.
