Spurs Could Have Traded For Trae Young

What’s going on everyone? So, last off season we saw these San Antonio Spurs active in trying to acquire an all-star caliber point guard. They were after De’aran Fox. Uh you heard Trey Young as well as Darius Garland were kind of the three big names that the Spurs were very active in trying to acquire. Obviously, it didn’t work out. Fast forward a couple months and all of a sudden, boom, De’arren Fox is a San Antonio Spur and they were able to pull that off and now they just gave him the new extension and he is, you know, an allstar caliber point guard that, you know, I think has a lot to prove, a lot that he needs to kind of, you know, show, especially with the Max contract that they gave him. But I do think him and Victor Wimyama could be a just dynamic pairing moving forward and you add in all the young talent, all the players. I think that the Spurs have a chance to it’ll be a really good team. I’m not really expecting them to win a championship this year. Hey, obviously you never know. We saw Indiana go on a crazy run last year. A lot harder in the West than it is the East. But if Wimby moves into, you know, the top five in the league or something like that and he’s just dominant and Darren Fox is looking like that all-star point guard again and, you know, Stefon Castle picks it up a year and, you know, Dylan Harper’s an impact guy right out the gate and the roll guys kind of step up, who knows, right? They’re definitely a team that I don’t want people to sleep on. They’re definitely a team that I think could be very good, but this kind of feels like a team that’s either, you know, they’re going to need to either trade for another star or they’re going to need their young guys to kind of expedite over the next, you know, year or so. Um, which is probably the route that they end up going, but time will tell. We will see. Uh, however, new reports came out that before the De’arra and Fox acquisition, uh, they could have gotten Trey Young. And it’s kind of an interesting idea and I want to go over it, but here’s the thing. So, this comes from uh NBA insider Jake Fischer and the Stein line. He was on the Stein line uh when he talked about Rich Paul and Trey Young were trying to push for a Spurs trade. Um so, there was a time, sources say, uh when Jun’s camp viewed him as an optimal potential playmaker partner for Victor Wimyama. He has since moved to CAA, but was repped at the time by Rich Paul uh who appeared determined to place one of the all-star guards, then on Clutch uh sports roster, Yun, Fox, or Darius Garland alongside Victor Womenyama uh Fischer wrote and obviously it ended up being D’arren Fox, Trey Young was an option, but I I I don’t so I think Darren Fox has the potential to be very good. Darren Fox is a better defensive player, too. I think Trey Young would actually be better because if anyone could kind of mask and help kind of the the Trey Young um you know pairing would be Victor Womenyama and just the ground that he covers. I just think I think if you put Trey Young with Victor Womenyama and then like three just like versatile switchable defenders like a Stfan Castle with like you know I don’t know go find two athletic versatile defenders. I think that could be terrifying. I Trey Young’s biggest issue is just the defense. He’s just small. But he’s more dynamic than Darren Fox. Darren Fox you could argue is a little more steady, right? But I just think the ceiling would have been higher with Trey Young as opposed to De’Aran Fox. I think I think there’s an argument to be made that can like like you kind of know what you’re going to get with De’aran Fox. That makes sense, right? But again, he hasn’t really done much, right? I mean, Trey Young was like a two wins away from being in like the NBA finals and and you know, he’s he’s had neither guy has had like major success, right? Neither guy has like led a team to an NBA championship. Neither guy I mean, you know, you look at Trey Young, he led a team to the Eastern Conference Finals and, you know, has basically been a playin team or missed the playoffs since, right? And and now he I mean, Atlanta, I don’t know why they’re not giving him a contract. Maybe they’re kind of waiting, being patient for next season, how see how it works. But that team is like tailor made for Trey Young, right? I think Atlanta has potential to be really good next year. But, you know, I just think Trey, like Trey, again, is more explosive at times. He’s more dynamic. Darren Fox, I think, is more steady cuz Trey at time, like Trey can kind of get a little trigger happy, right? Get a little tunnel vision at times. But also that a lot of that is like, you know, who’s kind of been his running mates, right? where Darren Fox I think know he gives you better defense right gives you a little little more size not much but a little more size right he’s he’s you know but Trey to me I think Trey is a better playmaker right just like Darren Fox is more of like a you know that hybrid guard that two you know point two guard so he can make plays right but he he’s best attacking getting downhill kind of operating in that you know like 10 foot range, kind of get into his office, get settled in, start knocking down shots, right? Being aggressive, I think, is where he’s at his best. Where Trey, I mean, you’re talking about a guy that, you know, leads the league in assists every year. He’s just a better natural playmaker. I just think him and Wimi would be just such a dynamic duo. Not that Fox and Wimi won’t be again. We got to see it. Who knows? But just seeing the way that Trey operates and plays, right? and and and how how explosive he can be at times, how clutch he can be at times, how know I think with a Victor Womenyama, I think could be I think you could mask Trey Young’s biggest flaws enough to where all like all the pros with him would be like, you know, more prominent, right? Where Darren Fox, again, I think Darren Fox is more steady. you think you kind of just know what you’re going to get. He’s really good, right? But Trey just he has that that explosiveness to him at times and is just kind of that that takeover guy at times and you know you could just like he’ll have these moments where it’s just it’s almost deflating to the other team. He just has these moments where he’s just like unbel you’re just like wow this guy is ridiculous. And and again, not to discredit Darren Fox because Darren Fox is really good. And and if we’re being honest, like Darren Fox might be just better for the Spurs team. Darren Fox kind of just feels more of a Spurs guy. Like Darren Fox, I do think will again be more steady for the Spurs than a Trey Young would be. But I just think the ceiling with Trey has the potential to be higher, right? But I think Darren Fox is the safer bet, right? I think you know it’s more lowrisk high reward than Trey Young where there is a potential where he just comes in he wants to be the guy he’s just you know trigger happy and just yeah just doing a little too much at times where I think Darren Fox will kind of give you that steady dose steady diet run the pick and roll with with Wimi and stuff. I just even last off season I talked about it on several occasions like I really I really would have loved to see you know Trey and Wimi. It was one of my more favorite pairings. Darren Fox was probably second. You know, Darius Garland I liked because Garlin was, you know, so young that it was like, okay, him over De’aran Fox, right? I I think the the upside could potentially be high. Darren Fox, I think we know who he is. All right, where I think both Darius Garland and Trey Young, I do think that in the right situation, there could be another level to them, right? But again, I think it’s the the safer, steadier diet, especially for such a young team. It might be good to have somebody like the Aaron Fox who has the experience, who’s a little older, a little more mature coming in, right? Kind of handle the business. The San Antonio Spurs needed a point guard last offseason and went after Trae Young, Darius Garland and De’Aaron Fox. Spurs ultimately traded for DE’AARON fox but could have traded for Trae Young.

  1. Trae’s reputation and narrative have never been the same since his ECF run, when he embraced his “villain” persona

  2. Would have loved to have Trae. I think in our system he wouldn’t force as many 3s and hopefully shoot better. Still posses the drive and draw capability level 10 and he’s a true pg that would have thrived finding victor.

But let’s face it. The price tag was going to be high. Not necessarily not worth it but when Fox said he was coming here it forced the kings to deal with us at a discount. We stole Fox. Also keep in mind we didn’t have the #2 at the time of the trade either.
