against Washington tough assignment again tonight the learning process continues it really does Drew but I’ll tell you Utah is struggling all also a big effort by the Nuggets tonight might get win number one well if the Nuggets could stop the game at the end of the first quarter they’d be undefeated they really would be I think what’s happening is the nuggets are coming out playing well taking their opponents by surprise but about the second quarter the opponents realize what they have to do to win the games and it’s been downhill after that first period Dan Danny forson got his first NBA start a couple of nights ago and he made the most of it in only 24 minutes on the floor he really did and I thought he played extremely well the Saturday before against this Utah Jazz he’s back on the bench tonight because of his foul trouble but I’ll tell you what Danny’s learning how to play he’s getting inside running the floor using that big body to score layups and to get to the free throw line and maybe the most consistent performer through the first three ball games has been Eric Williams who comes over from Boston the other night 26 points and he’s a fixture at the free throw line he really is and that’s what I like about Eric Williams he knows how to play inside he’s not that big but he can get around big people and he draws the free throws 19 of them against the Wizards yeah that is a whole bunch we talked to nugget co- Captain Brian Stith a short while ago and asked him if the team was remaining upbeat through the early start no it’s it’s not hard to be emotionally charged I think that that’s about being a professional just doing your job and I have a responsibility to this team because we are very young inexperienced right now to make sure sure that these guys you know don’t take a SL don’t take it for granted that we have to work even harder now that we don’t have that respect around the league like most other teams so it’s important that we come and play emotion very emotionally and that we do a very good job each and every night because that’s the only way that this team is going to improve and a very young nugget team will have to rely heavily on the six-year veteran Brian Stith the Utah Jazz are off to an uncharacteristic one and three start of course they’re playing without John Stockton they still however have the mailman is there a guy in this league you respect more than Carl Malone I really don’t I think Drew even though the team is struggling his young teammates are struggling Carl Malone still putting up MVP numbers against the nuggets the other night he received the ball much too close to the basket if you’re going to have a chance to defend Carl Malone you’ve got to make him catch the ball at least outside the pain well John Stockton is out for at least 6 weeks he had surgery on his left knee before the season again he had missed only four games in his career before the start of this season they need him very badly that is obvious in his place the two players who’ve been playing the point guard Howard Eisley out of Boston College he’s been in the league a couple of years and a guy I liked a lot in college Jack vaugh out of Kansas well these two young men are playing instead of John Stockton they’re never going to replace John Stockton you notice the assist numbers together even though they’re playing well still not half the number of assists that John Stockton would be averaging by himself there’s another star that always seems to get lost when you talk about the Utah Jabs because you begin with John Stockton and Carl Malone but Jeff horac is one of the best pure Shooters in this game he really is uh but Drew he has struggled in the first four games as well only shooting 40% I think Jeff is a player that really is going to have to take up the slack he’ll break out of it let’s hope he doesn’t break out tonight that’s right the Nuggets looking for a full 48 minutes of effort tonight as they Goodman let’s take a look look at the Rocky Mountain Ford starting lineup first for the Utah Jazz Howard Isley will try and replace John Stockton Greg Oster tag in the middle Brian Russell has been struggling with his shot is a small forward the mailman at the power forward Jeff hornek is the two guard for the Nuggets Bryant Stith and Bobby Jackson in the back court Dean Garrett in the middle Eric Williams and Tony B who missed the first Jazz game with back spasms will be in the starting lineup tonight which means that Danny forson will come off the bench and we’ve talked a lot about sustaining 48 minutes of effort that’s something bill hanslick is really focused on the last couple of days in practice well I I don’t think you can improve Drew as a team until you get that effort once the team’s playing hard then they’ll be able to learn but if you go out and after a quarter quarter and a half you just kind of quit then there’s no way you’re going to get anything out of that game win or lose Bill hanslick and on the other side is Jerry Sloan who is the dean of all coaches now in the NBA in his 10th year and we talked to Jerry before the ball game and asked him about life without John Stockton I think you know that if you lose a player like John Stockton obvious you don’t replace a guy like that and his intensity his desire his ability to be able to keep his teammates involved in the game you don’t replace that but I the I think the important thing in trying to coach in this business is to try to get other players to play uh as well as they can play and not looking for crutches and things to deal with and I think that’s one of the things that’s hurt us a little bit we’ve used that as a little bit of a crutch to try to try to get by obviously we haven’t gotten by very well and uh we’ve had a lot of things happen to us that uh I think are a little bit uncharacteristic for some people on our team Dan all coaches talk about toughness this guy was one of the toughest people to ever play in the NBA and there’s no question about it and that’s why he was able to survive as long as he did in the NBA without a lot of talent and I think that’s one of the reasons that he’s able to survive as a coach he has the longest tenure with any one team of any coach in the NBA he played with Chicago and he also coached in Chicago Bill Hansley played here in Denver and is now the Nuggets head coach and one thing that bill is able to do so far as stay positive stay enthusiastic and that’ll be a test through 882 games there’s no question about it especially early on very difficult schedule so Utah will head left to right Howard Eisley with the basketball and he gets off to Malone good pass on the back door cut to Jeff hor that was a stockt him like pass it really was and that’s the way you get a guy who’s struggling shooting the ball like cornack off as you get him an easy shot to start the game Jackson goes inside to B good catch he’s double team well here’s where we’re going to be watching the Nuggets shooting only 40% for the season their opponents almost 49 and a half% is last in the in the NBA and we’ll see what Utah does shooting the ball tonight oh the Jazz turn it over there Utah interestingly enough is shooting beneath the nuggets the Nuggets 26th in the leak the Jazz 27 that’s unreal because the last few years the Jazz have either been number one or number two in field goal percentage and we showed you that Carl Malone was shooting over 50% it’s even worse than that for the rest of the players Drew they’re only shooting 37.5% yeah he’s the only one above 50% that’s an ill-advised shot by Tony bti one minute gone we’re tied at two Bobby Jackson has a jumper in this man Jeff horack has a layup inside the H tag and he loses the handle maybe he’s still smarting from that shot that Shaq gave him well this was a great pick and roll at the top of the top of the floor but uh uh poster tag just just didn’t catch the ball stiff poting up on horn SEC Here Comes Malone and that’s a foul on Carl as he clubbed bran across the arms one of the things that Bill hanslick wants to do is get a post up Brian STI on Jeff hor second well will give alliser that shot if they can hold Utah to a 20ft jumper fromy that’s okay that’s absolutely right and of course the time clock shot clock was running down so no chance to get the ball off to Malone T shot from Eric Williams his first bucket on his first shot of the night he’s averaging 18 a game 4-2 Denver Malone up top and he swies it Dean Garrett got the starting assignment on Carl Malone trying to keep ba out of foul trouble but Dean’s going to have to get closer than that Carl a much better outside shooter than he was earlier in his career he automatic 17 on in tough layup gar tried to follow it up gets the offensive rebound out High to stiff for three followed up in Tony B going to the offensive glass well people are going to learn around the NBA very quickly that you got to put a body on Tony bti if you don’t he’s such a quick jumper inside he’s going to get a lot of offensive rebounds here comes the screen and roll they slip it horac drives to the hoop tag rejected by ba get it out of [Applause] here Williams driving and it’s a blocking foul on Brian Russell let’s watch the uh board work by the nuggets on the offensive end last possession yeah Eric Williams takes the ball strong you see nobody blocks B out oh well first of all Garrett’s going to get it outside after this Miss jumper nobody blocks bti out and he sneaks right between Malone and Oster tag three and a half gone in the opening quarter 6 to four Denver Williams up top do get the roll Malone gets the car on the drive to Carl Malone easy bucket for Malone and that was a pretty pass by Isley Bobby Jackson got a little over extended going to fight over the pick and isy dropped it off for a nice pass trying to keep the ball movement going just 12 assists the other night gets it inside and he has it swatted away ahead of the field is Malo great pass from Jeff cor well Oster tag doesn’t look like it but he is an outstanding shot blocker he’s second in the league at four blocks a game so you got to be careful when he’s in the middle defensively like the alltime shot Blocker in Big Eight history quickly makes the move but nice move by Jeff Hornes all of a sudden the weight wasn’t there and Bryan shuffled his feet yeah that’s exactly right good call Drew because horac if he if he keeps body contact then Bryant knows exactly where he is and where to make his move horc step back Brian Nuggets very impressive offensively here in the opening quarter you know and and right now the reason the nuggets are coming back into it is the nuggets are not content with the o with the outside quarters have really been problematic for Denver they’ve been outscored by an average of 21 points in the second and third quarter through three ball games is that concentration Dan well a little bit it might also be a little bit fatigue it also might be a little bit that the people you’re bringing Off the Bench putting in the game aren’t they’re not continuing that effort that the first group is towel or not wanting to run the passing game but I tell you what the passing game is a very difficult offense to learn and the nuggets have a long way to go before they’re executing it as well as they will so it makes sense to throw some look at this shot I don’t think I’ve ever seen that on a free throw Carone make sure he tipped it out and not in but by rule we’ve seen a couple of things I don’t think I’ve ever seen before I’ve never seen a free throw stay on the back of the standard that way and earlier we saw Danny forson took one of his teammates shots out from underneath the basket and this one crawls home well you know what that’s called Dan that’s called the Great touch you have to have a great touch to have the ball sit on the iron 6656 would you call that drawing a lot of iron yeah absolutely can’t get it to go Dean Garrett the rebound Jackson looking up the floor forun double team lost it gets it back goes up and missed the layup third opportunity no go and a foul called
