The offense looked DOMINANT in the Broncos win over the Cardinals! | Denver Sports Daily

The Broncos tore apart the Arizona Cardinals in their second preseason game of the year. This is your Denver Sports Daily for August 18th. The biggest stories, the latest news. It’s Denver Sports Daily. Now, earlier last week, it was announced by Shawn Payeyton that the starters would be sitting for the Broncos game against the Cardinals, but all in all, it didn’t really matter. And if we remember the first game of the preseason against the 49ers, the backups looked better than the starters. And I think that that would be the case for this past Saturday’s game had the starters played. Now, they didn’t, but it didn’t really matter at all because when you walked into Mile High, when you turned on that TV this weekend, you could hear those air raid sirens going off. Jared Stidum and Sam Ellinger were slinging the rock. It was one of the better QB performances I’ve seen from both of these guys. And with STDM, the way that he’s performing, he’s got to be building a resume because if he continues to play at this level, and if he can play at this level in the regular season in the time that he may or may not get, the Broncos might have two QB1s. Stumm threw for 240 yards while and two touchdowns while completing 16 of 23 passes. And then Sam Ellinger threw for 162 yards on 14 of 16. Incredible numbers. And you combine those, overall the QBs threw for 395 yards and two touchdowns on 76.9% completion. Those are insane numbers. And sure, it’s just the preseason, but the preseason means a lot more when it’s only backups going out there to play. When it’s announced that the starters are sitting and the backups are who are looking to get a real roster spot on this team are going out there and playing, that’s when they really turn up. And Jared Stedm, he knows that he’s secure. He knows he’s the QB, too. He knows he’s very comfortable in where he is right now. So, he just he’s going out there and he’s just playing his game. It’s it’s very very comforting to see how well these QBs can play when Bon Knicks isn’t on the field because that’s of course, knock on wood, worst case scenario, something happens to Bo. That’s not anything that we’re we’re we’re looking forward to. But it’s comforting to know that has or if something does happen, Jared Stidum can come in and play at a high level. Cuz if he can play like that in a regular season where you may only need him for uh four snaps just to give Bo a little bit of a rest, that will win you a game. That will keep you in the game at least. Now, with QBs throwing it that well, those wide receivers were eaten too. Pat Bryant and Troy Franklin looked incredible. Incredible. They both only had four receptions. Pat Bryant had four receptions for 70 yards and Troy Franklin had four receptions for 67 yards and the two passing touchdowns from Jared Stinnham. And it wasn’t just those two. Evan Ingram had only one catch for 58 yards. On the second play of the game, he gets the ball and starts bringing it downfield. 58 yards downfield. Everybody was eaten. They were all sharing. And seeing how well Pat Bryant and Troy Franklin were able to play was awesome. I mean, those guys I’ve got so much hope for. I I really do love Pat Bryant. And he was going out there and he was laying some blocks out. He was getting the ball downfield. He was running after the catch. Pat Bryant was playing very well. And Troy Franklin, seeing him step into a secondyear position where he’s still out there playing with the backups, you know, he’s out there with the second team, but he’s eating. He’s going out 67 yards and two touchdowns on four receptions. He was making the game his. And again, it wasn’t just the the receiving core or the QBs. The run game looked solid as well. Everybody on the field looked very very stout. They were all playing uh their game to the highest possible level, and you don’t usually get to see that in the preseason. You’re seeing guys get scrappy and stuff like that. But some of these names are bigger. I mean, you’re talking about Troy Franklin’s, you’re talking about Evan Ingrams, and then the run game, Jalia Mclofflin, who has been on this team for a while. He’s out there, he’s leading the team with 48 yards on only three carries. And then Blake Watson going out with the most touches, 34 yards on 10 carries. And then RJ Harvey, if you watch my show, if you’ve watched the show, you know how I feel about R.J. Harvey. And my number one critique is how he bounces the ball outside. I want to say how amazed I was at h how RJ Harvey played on Saturday. He had 18 yards on three carries and one touchdown. And that one touchdown happened because he stayed within the tackles and ran it up the gut and ended up rushing for that touchdown. It was amazing. I was I was watching that play happen and I was waiting for him to try to bounce it outside and get tackled for a two- yard loss and it didn’t happen. He didn’t get flustered. He stayed between the tackles and he ran up the middle and he got to the end zone. Shawn Peyton has been in his ear telling him that he needs to do this more or else he’s not going to continue to have touches on the field. He needs to run the play instead of making it his and running outside. RJ Harvey stunned me on Saturday with that one touchdown. I have hope for RJ Harvey. I’m not high on him, but I want him to prove me wrong. And on Saturday, he proved me wrong. He did what I what what everybody I feel has been asking him to do. Stay within the tackles and run the play. Don’t bow with us outside. Run your game. Move those feet and stay between the tackles. I don’t want to say it anymore because he did it. It was great. And if he can continue to do that in regular season games, I will be wrong about R.J. Harvey. I will I will stand here and I will say, “Hey, I was wrong about R.J. I want him to go out. He He succeeded and I was wrong. I’ll wear that. I will. And seeing what he did on Saturday proved me wrong. And I liked it. I want to see how it translate to the regular season. But as great of a game as it was for the Broncos, no good deed goes unpunished as the Broncos suffered a setback as offensive lineman Nick Garguilo suffered a knee injury that’s going to keep him sidelined for the rest of the season. Now, Nick Garguilo was a seventhround pick in last year’s draft and spent the entirety of the last season on the practice squad. Uh, so he was really making a lot of progress in this training camp in the preseason. He was going out there and he was having an amazing camp and performing well at the interior lineman spot. And it looked like, it really did look like he was going to make the 53man roster. But in the third quarter of Saturday’s game, Garguilo suffered a knee injury while blocking for Blake Watson. And uh, Garilo was immediately carded off the field. And on Sunday, it was announced that he’ll be placed on injured reserve and missed the entirety of this season. So, obviously, uh, not great. You never want to see anybody get injured, especially that somebody, uh, who you drafted last season in the seventh round, spent time on the practice squad, and then made a lot of improvement in the off season and all of last season, was working really hard and looked like he was going to be on this final roster. But, uh, unfortunately, it just won’t happen for him this year. real unfortunate. Uh, but that’s going to do it for your D Sports Daily. I do want to read some of your comments. Good morning, Joey. I’m liking our depth overall. The depth on this team is insane. And that’s just on the offensive side. The defensive side of the football is deep as well. I mean, what we saw on the offense this Saturday was incredible. They were on fire. I didn’t even really mention how well the defense played. I mean, these were the backups going out there and they had the they held the Cardinals to seven points. It was great. It was great. R.J. only had 18 yards on three carries. If I said only, I didn’t mean that. I I really did want to give uh RJ his flowers today. 18 yards on three carries is incredible. And a touchdown. I’d take that any day, too. So, Donald, I I didn’t mean to say only. He He did have a great great performance. Stum looks good. He does. Stidum’s having an incredible camp, an incredible preseason performances. It’s been amazing to see. And what I’m really worried about is that he’s building up a resume to leave because we already saw Zack Wilson leave this past off seasonason. I don’t want to see Stumm leave, too. I want him to stay here and I want him to be a secure backup because this guy has has proved every to everybody that he is a solid backup for this team. He’s willing to he’s willing and learning to be a solid runner. Yeah. No, I definitely agree. I’ve seen a lot of improvement from R.J. Harvey. Uh, I mean, he’s been out there in camp really talking with Shawn Peyton, learning and uh, showing that willingness with that run for a touchdown. He he stayed within the tackles and and that’s all that I can say. You just got to do that. If you’re in RJ Harvey or RJ Harvey’s position, you got to listen to what Shawn Payeyton’s saying. What Shawn Payeyton has been saying is stop bouncing the ball outside because it’s not going to work at the NFL level. And he took that advice and he succeeded with it on Saturday. Now, that’ll do it for your Denver Sports Daily. I will be back with you guys again tomorrow. It was a huge huge preseason game that we got to watch this Saturday and I can’t wait to talk about one more preseason game and then after that all all regular season, all NFL football. It’s almost back. I can I can taste it. But I can’t wait to be back with you guys tomorrow talking about that. Until then, y’all have a great rest of your day. I will see you all later. Bye y’all.

Jarrett Stidham and the rest of the Broncos offense took over in their second preseason game of the year, but no good deed goes unpunished as the Broncos suffered a slight setback! This is your Denver Sports Daily for August 18th!

  1. Let's slow our roll with Stidham. Broncos also were hooked, lined and sinkered into Teddy Bridgewater, who was fortunate to be coached by Sean the prior season. How many of Sean's back ups have gone on to truly become a franchise QB? 🙃 Stidham looked great and I'm stoked for him, he looked great in the third season in Sean's offense. But he is the back up.

  2. It feels like Saturday changed the expectations for the Broncos this year. That was consecutive blowouts by the 2nd and 3rd string guys. We already know the starters are playoff caliber and we look like Super Bowl contenders now.
