The San Antonio City Council has approved a funding deal for a $1.3 billion Spurs arena after shooting down the mayor’s request for a pause.

In a meeting packed with business leaders, community groups, Spurs officials, and even Spurs legend Sean Elliott, city council members voted down Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones’ proposal 4-7 without any discussion, apart from the mayor’s comments.

The group then spent an hour and a half discussing the non-binding terms before passing them 7-4 along the same split.

The terms were negotiated by city staff and Spurs officials. Though they are nonbinding, they will serve as the framework for future contracts,

Jones had asked to hold off considering a funding deal until the city had received an “independent” economic impact report and held two community feedback meetings in each district.

Leo Castillo-Anguiano (D2), Teri Castillo (D5), and Ric Galvan (D6) voted with the mayor in requesting a pause and then against approving the terms.

  1. San Antonio resident and I think this is a bad idea. They wasted money by building the alamodome, which still holds events but was built in the worse area, horrific parking and is just there. The AT&T center, which has the frost bank center arena right next to it and the AT&T center is a nice basketball arena. I don't believe the Spurs need to move. I am not a Spurs fan but the city loves and adores the Spurs. San Antonio wants to be a bigger market, which I understand but they still need alot of work in their downtown area and I think building a new stadium is not the greatest thing for them right now but i know how everything is about money but it's sad to see this going on.

  2. The current arena is only 23 years old. I haven't been there since 2005, and it was only 3 then….sure was a great arena.
I get it though. They want the full entertainment zone package with hotels, convention center, downtown location (where the current arena is not).
Go for it! Sure looks like a great deal on the surface.

  3. LOL bro without the Curry era, your Golden State Warriors are bottom tier. And once Curry retires, back to the cellar that franchise goes.

They got nothing on the Spurs organization.

  4. Apparently the Spurs chair has the people on his side. Am I the only one who half-wishes that Jesse Ventura was San Antonio's mayor just to see him go at the Spurs chair?

(6:11 stage whisper) Toronto Raptors. See, Brodie? We can do it, too!

To what Sean Elliott said, I live in a city where the two professional sports franchises (CFL and Canadian Premier League soccer) are actively involved with the community. They work with schools, with disability organizations, and with the city itself. Athletes often live in the city long after their careers are done. There's a culture and a bond between the teams and the community, and this bond is a major community economic driver. As much as I dislike PPPs in general, this one seems to have some merit on the surface as it does seem to be a partnership as opposed to just "team wants taxpayer money".

  5. Those salty Texas politics. The mayor asked Mr. Holt a question. Seemed to me a simple one. He got snotty, spewed his fluff again, and didn't answer the question. I guess he doesn't know what "a simple yes or no" means. Honestly, I would've expected a lot more class from the Spurs than this. The mayor is trying to do her job. Anything less would be negligence. Or maybe no other city has gotten burned on a bad arena deal?… 🤔…For better or worse Mr. Holt, you are engaged in politics. It's frustrating. Almost by design. So stop acting like a sullen frat boy whose daddy's friends aren't lining him up for a sweetheart lease. For the record, from what I have seen and heard so far, this project is thumbs up from my point of view, and aside from GSW, the Spurs are probably the cream of the NBA crop. So stop acting like an angry, flapping rooster and just work the numbers…

  6. Owners are worth north of 6 billion according to Forbs. Giving any tax money to the wealthy 1% so hey can make more money is the biggest scam in the world. The argument asbout jobs is totally false, create temporary construction work for a couple years and low paying part time arena workers that are already accounted for in the building they have now, so they are just transferring jobs, not creating jobs. "Teams get all the befits, cities take all the risk"…… Joe Mansueto..Paying 500 million for a new soccer stadium in Chicago. I think he knows what he is talking about.

  7. Hey Brodie…Love your channel! Thanks for the great coverage on the Spurs arena vote. I lived in San Antonio in the 90's and remember seeing Sean Elliot and David Robinson in their prime. I've lived in the Midwest for the past 25 years but I'm still a Spurs fan. San Antonio is a one sport town…They love the Spurs and will do anything to keep the franchise. This includes replacing a 23 year old arena. Another commenter mentioned that the new arena needs to support hockey too…I agree! When I lived there, the San Antonio Iguanas played hockey at the ancient Freeman Coliseum…But their games were fun and inexpensive!

  8. The Spurs having a new arena will free up the Frost Center for other events. Spurs won’t have to take their annual “Rodeo Road” trip. IMO the Frost Center looks like a cheap barn a la Texas Ranger Globe Life.

  9. I am from Texas and I go to San Antonio frequently. I'm talking about going there monthly over the last 20 years.

I can tell you without a doubt that the San Antonio Spurs fans are some of the best in the country and the city loves its team.

What San Antonio is awful at is knowing how to spend money on arenas. The Alamodome is a ginormous waste of money since it doesn't have an NFL tenant. The Spurs current home is about to become a giant waste of money. And theyre building a minor league starium while the city has major league aspirations.

I do love San Antonio though. Would love to have Mama Margie's bean and cheese tacos right now.

  10. It’s crazy to me how many buildings we have that only can last 20 years or less…

  11. No one has addressed whats going to happen with the Frost Center OR the Freeman Coliseum right next to it. What, we're going to have 2 nearly always vacant arenas right next to each other? Thats madness and urban blight.

  12. Like how you take the time to break down all theses stadiums/arenas sagas. Seems like politicians and owners always but heads over something or everything in these negotiations

  13. DID SAN ANTONIO MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION FOR THE CITY?
