When The Suns Randomly Traded For Shaq

After 3 straight seasons of failing to break through in the West playoffs, the Suns made a massive move during the 2008 season. In early February they sent out Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks to the Heat and in return received Shaquille O’Neal. It was a confusing trade at the same time due to Phoenix’s play style and almost two decades later it still makes no sense.

  1. Getting Shaq was a bad move by Kerr, but the Suns did make it back to the WCF in 2010 (his last season as GM). So that's gotta count for something, right?!

  2. Actually you can't blame it all on Steve Kerr on this one. Steve Kerr wanted Tom Thibodeau to be a defensive coordinator for Mike D'Antoni on the Suns and D'Antoni flat out refused the idea. Doc Rivers thought it was a great idea brought Thibbs to the Celtics with The Big 3….
    BOOM!!! 2008 NBA Champions

  3. I grew up as both a University of Arizona and 90s Bulls fan, Steve Kerr should be my favorite player of all time. But as a Suns fan, all I ever think of when I see him is the Shaq trade.

  4. Shaq went from 89-90 overall in Miami to around 83 when he got traded to the Suns. Obviously a past his prime Shaq wasn't gonna work for a fast-paced offense. Slimmed down, maybe it could have worked.

  5. 2:35 Stop feeding into the Shaq-driven narrative that Shaq should have won that 2005 MVP. He averaged 27 and 11 in 2003, finishes 5th in MVP voting, nobody bats an eye, and we’re supposed to award him the MVP for going to Miami (who was a playoff team before he got there) and averaging 22 and 10? He wasn’t even the best player in Miami at the time. The fact that he finished second in MVP voting with those stats and Dwyane Wade outplaying him is crazy enough.

Nash single-handedly turned that Suns team around, adding 33 wins to their season record, changing them from cellar dweller to championship contender in one offseason. He absolutely deserved that award.

  6. The only good thing about this trade was Steve Nash pumped up Shaq's stats so good that Shaq made the All Star game and we got to see Shaq and Kobe reunited for a night

  7. Shaq would've been a great fit with his Orlando athletic self. But trading Marion was the worst crime in all of this.

  8. It was a bad idea, but the Shaq trade is not as awful as its made out to be. Just to emphasize how brutal the West was, the 08-09 Suns won 46 games and missed the playoffs.

They would have a 5th seed in the Eastern conference.

  9. Funny enough i was talking about this with a friend last night

Although it was about how Steve Kerr said Phoenix would never trade Shawn Marion and years later did the same with Steve Nash, and look what happened

  10. The Suns made it to the WCF in 2010. So they had one more shot after trading Shaq. The trade didn’t end their chances to win with Nash.

  11. that's when the downfall started, traded marcus banks(salary filler) and marion(who got his without running plays for him and teams best defender), for shaq, who san antonio hack a shaq'd to victory, shaq threatening to retire if it didnt stop…it was over, and we all knew it

  12. Birth of the Shaqtus. He’d go on to sue a clothing and apparel company over the use of that moniker/brand

  13. You guys really have to do something about your audio. Your S sounds have all kinds of rasp/distorsion/whatever.

I really like your content, but I can't really watch a lot of it. Hurts my ears:/

  14. Suns went from contender to 1st round exit and no playoffs after that Shaq trade though. He did not fit their fast pace offense.

  15. That halftime show he did was so embarrassing shaq embarrassed himself, the last part of his career dick riding every team that was good starting with Phoenix, then the Cavs and worst of all the Celtics
