We are less than 48 hours from a downtown showdown at City Hall. It’s a vote that could be a game changer for the Spurs arena and the future of downtown with Project Marvel.
City Council votes Thursday on whether or not to greenlight a term sheet for a new $1.3 billion Spurs arena.
Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones is proposing a pause on the funding because she says the only information on the arena’s benefits come from a study commissioned by the Spurs Sports and Entertainment District.
Some city council members like District 3’s Phyllis Viagran have serious concerns about delaying a vote for the city to move forward.
“If a pause is approved, I think we are seriously facing losing the Spurs to another market outside of Texas,” Viagran said.

No such thing as a forever home with professional sports teams
They built the current Frost Bank Center at that location as a compromise. Even then, people saw it as a poor decision but due to budget and push back from the county, they decided to move there. The location helped the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo which is on the same property. The goal was to help develop a poor, industrial area but that never happened. People go to the Spurs game, get in their cars and leave. There is nothing to do there and you hope your car doesn't break down. A downtown location is so much better.
Vote no for arena
Hey Spurs, build your own stadium with your own funds. Stop trying to use taxpayer money!!!
Why not do both if it is non binding? San Antonio used to be one of the top 2-3 convention cities in the country. They have fallen way down the list (like 20 or so) do mainly to not having the space for large conventions. I could see this in the long run being a huge plus, much like the original Himesair Park and old Spurs arena.
Let the welfare millionaire and billionaire welfare queens and kings pay for it themselves.
I'm rooting hard against San Antonio due to their far-left, irratonal and hateful head coach.
A disgrace to America
They were so dumb to build the Frost Center (SBC Center back then) in the terrible east side of town location. They drank the “A new arena will rejuvenate this crappy part of town” kool-aid. If they would’ve built it downtown back then it prob would’ve “only” costed $300-$400M which would be $600M – $700M in today’s dollars. That mistake is prob gonna cost them almost $1B.
FYI….the Frost Center will continue to be used as the home of the SA Livestock & Rodeo group and we will be transitioned to a facility to hold rodeo events year round (remember this is Texas) which currently is not possible with the Spurs. Also, part of Project Marvel plan is to refurbish the Alamodome which in 2024 had its most successful year turning a profit for the city without having the NFL as a tenant. The Alamodome is home to UTSA College football, Spring League Football, NCAA Bowl Games, State Championship Football and Basketball games, NCAA Basketball tournament games (last year Final Four was held there) and continues to attract Big Stadium musical tours throughout the year. Obviously the city has determined the Alamodome will continue to turn a profit for years to come.
This is a tin foil hat theory, but…
Note how a few years ago the Spurs changed some of their alternate logos to say "SATX". It's so easy to drop the S if they move to Austin. Remember when the North Stars changed their logo to something more ready-made for a move?
This is a vibes vote
Their arena is newer than Staples.
I am from San Antonio and no one is saying this. Literally her and a few activists. She won on pro marvel and switch when she won the election
It’s bc we almost lost the spurs in 1999 and the county owns the land the frost sits on and it was a cheaper option. The arena is in residential neighborhood surrounded by warehouse, houses
say NO and move spurs to louisville, kc, or st. L.
She was born in Virginia. I’m sure SA is her project. If she fails here she’ll run back there saying she’s home yada yada yada. The people will support their Spurs. Get out the way and get it done while we have Wemby.
Wow, the mayor drove to Chicago and picked up Father Pflager the Pfaker for the photo op. She is a fraud.
They don't need a new arena
Basically they are trying to replace the HemisFair Arena, which was in that area by the Tower of the Americas. It's not a bad idea or location, and if it can supplement the Convention Center, so much the better. If they encapsulate that whole area as a TIF capture zone, and fence off the sales taxes collected within, I can see them pulling this off. (Comes out of the general fund, but hey. That's why they do the math.)…That cap over I-37 to the Alamodome definitely needs to be built. Turn it into a park…
This project should've happened a quarter century ago. It must be said though that just like the building of the Alamodome and Tower of Americas, just like the current expasion of the Alamo premises… this will lead to businesses and residents being either gentrified or pushed out via eminent domain.
Downtown San Antonio is a walker's paradise and I'd love to see all this happen… but the mayor right, countless subsidies continue to be paid out for the failure of the Frost Bank Center – a failure not because of the arena itself, but because it is an absolutely horrendous commuting experience with no desirable amenities ever built nearby despite the Spurs dynasty. It is by far the worst venue deal I've ever seen for a city, comparable perhaps only to Quebec City. At least the Bengals stadium is in a highly-desirable, connected location in downtown Cincy next to the Ohio River.
SA has become such a woke liberal shithole…led by their racist coach. Too bad because its had such an amazing life story.
A Democrat female Hispanic mayor. Let me guess, she's going to want the Spurs to pay for a museum or cultural center dedicated to great Hispanic women or some other identity politics B.S. The thing is that if any team deserves to get held hostage for something like that it's an NBA team and specifically the Spurs. The deal that the Tampa Bay Rays backed out of included "affordable housing" and an African-American history museum, so get ready San Antonio. Mark my words.
San Antonio resident here: The mayor is a fraud and a liar. Don't let her words fool you, on her campaign website hidden within the fine print, she stated that her objective was to end Project Marvel and direct those funds to her socialist pet projects that she deems necessary. SPURS fans DO NOT LIKE HER!!! she is an embarrassment to out city, and the majority of residents want a recall election and get her out of office. She doesn't give a damn about the spurs and San Antonio
The Frost Bank Center was built on County owned land and paid for by a hotel/motel and car rental tax so as not to use local tax dollars to pay for it.
So I’m just going to speculate here as a resident of the area since ’07 (originally from the Bay Area) – UTSA holds the most critical piece of land for project marvel to even happen, where the ITC is now being torn down. The school agreeing to do that benefits the city and project a lot, so I’m just venturing to guess that may be a big reason why the Alamodome is included in this. UTSA has aspirations to be a power 5 football team, and having the dome in top shape could help get them there. Many conferences and schools have been willing to play UTSA or entertain the idea of them joining the conference because of the opportunity to play in a dome and the potential seating capacity. I don’t know that SA could support another pro team or not, but if UTSA can continue to grow and get in a major conference, the dome will be part of that. UTSA has a very long lease at the dome, and if they got to a big conference, that could benefit the city a lot.
The Alamodome has already finished paying for itself AND it is home to the UTSA football team. This stadium would sell out for crappy teams like the Panthers, the Saints, or any NFL team from Florida if they decided to move here. The only reason we do not have a team is because Jerry Jones does not want anyone interfering with his fan base. Unfortunately, a lot of San Antonians are dumb when it comes to NFL fandom. While the Saints' fans put bags over their heads when their team sucks, San Antonio Cowboys fans are idiots and proudly pay double for Cowboys gear and Cowboys tickets like its 1996.
Tell the teams and the politicians that the era of corporate welfare is over!
🚈🚇Ⓜ️..Make sure there's PUBLIC/MASS TRANSIT built into this Prj Marvel !! ..(w Satellite Parking )..cuz WALKABILITY is such an ASSET of Downtown SA !! 🚎🚍🚌
There is NO WAY a government entity can go out for a contract for such a study, AND get it done in time to present to the council/public with enough time to get the information out so that voters can make an educated decision regarding this proposal. They would have to present the findings by late September, conduct the study and write drafts and a final version with only 6 weeks to go?? This is not some college term paper that you cobble together. The mayor has something up her sleeve IMHO
Brodie, your anti-owner bias slipped there a little bit
At t center is not old only 23 years
Ortiz is in no way acting in good faith
Most of us can't even afford their regular season games………why would we want to pay to build them another arena?
San Antonio's city council voted 7-4 to block mayor Ortiz Jones's proposal for delaying Project Marvel. They'll be voting on the project in November. There was concern if there was a delay, other cities would try to woo the Spurs. The sentiment is the Spurs have been such a great asset and part of the fabric of San Antonio for so long, many feel a new stadium downtown would be a huge benefit to local commerce and the economy, and for maintaining a vibrant community.
Future Seattle Sonics. Vancouver Spurs. Mexico City Spurs.
No one has addressed whats going to happen with the Frost Center OR the Freeman Coliseum right next to it. What, we're going to have 2 nearly always vacant arenas right next to each other? Thats madness and urban blight.
i never heard of a surname of Brazil. If it’s a stage name i think Andy Argentina or Peter Peru would have been a better choice.
I love that the mayor is literally just asking for due diligence for a major public expenditure and morons are trying to criticize her as if she's overstepping her bounds. I'm surprised SA elected her in the first place with all these idiots in the mix.
Giner jones worst mayor of all time!
The mayor is an idiot. If you think San Antonio, will choose the mayor, over the Spurs. Then you are really misguided in your analysis.
