To be fair, paying Kawhi Leonard under the table is like giving Greg Oden a supermax contract.
1. Stop calling this an endorsement deal. Kawhi did no endorsing. The deal was never announced publicly. It wasn't an endorsement deal. It was a deal that transferred up tp 48 million dollars to Kawhi's pockets. To do what? Apparently the only condition Kawhi had to fulfill was to stay with the Clippers. It wasn't an endorsement deal. It was an employment contract.
2. The fact that Aspiration was being run by a fraudster makes it more likely that this transaction was consciously designed and intended to circumvent the salary cap, not less likely. Ballmer didn't get Kawhi a "no show" Microsoft endorsement deal. Microsoft is too big an entity to engage in this kind of small-fry shenanigans. They have bigger fish to fry. So who does Ballmer turn to? Out of the entire universe of his business contacts? A shady environmental start-up company that never produced anything or provided any services to anyone as far as can be determined. Whose CEO is now under federal indictment for wire fraud. Ballmer is considered one of the sharpest minds in the investing world. Zero chance he got into bed with Alliance by mistake. As Jesse once presciently observed, "When the going gets tough, you don't want a criminal lawyer, alright? You want a 'criminal' lawyer."
3. The suggestion that a 50 million dollar "investment" is too small a figure for Steve Ballmer to worry about fundamentally misunderstands the nature of greed. Steve Ballmer was at the Intuit Dome construction sight counting toilets for god's sake. You think someone that OCD is going to lose track of 50 million dollars? Laughable. Billionaires don't get to be, and remain, billionaires by throwing money away.
4. The past is prologue. The Clippers and Ballmer have a history of trying to circumvent the salary cap and buy themselves into relevance. This latest scandal is exactly the kind of bad faith actions this owner and this franchise have taken repeatedly in the past.
Ballmer should be forced to sell the team. Kawhi should be suspended for a year and have his contract voided. Clippers should lose picks and have anyone involved in this fired. Death penalty for player, owner and franchise.
It’s been updated by I don’t remember who, WSJ maybe, that there was a second payment to Leonard in the form of stock options paid out of the CEOs “personal stash” which bring the total he is being paid $48 million and Ballmer conveniently gave the company $50 million 🤔
His agreement with Aspiration would be terminated if he was no longer on the Clippers. That's not a personal endorsement. That has to be team involved.
Rich people deal with Shell companies quite regularly, hiding money is just normal for them. This activity stinks to high heaven.
Why does Cuban need to comment?? It’s nothing to do with him
Owners willing to pay for. Top player. That’s what ruining the league
He was actually being paid $48M
the scam company paid Kawhitter $28m and gave him $20m in stock….. to do no promos, make no appearances, to do nothing at all? When the Clippers face severe punishment, Kawhitter should face severe punishment too. At least 1 full year suspension…… with no pay
Kawhi doesn't have salary cap…the clippers do
Balmer is the Patsy in this deal, Kawhi and his Uncle are the ones who should be Suspended.
If this goes unpunished the rest of the owners now have the formula to circumvent the rules. Dodgers found their loophole. Just need to hire a good legal team to find them.
Mark is missing the point that Ballmer is both smart enough to circumvent the cap and dumb enough to get scammed. Both things can be true. The latter does not mean the former didn't happen.
Please these types of deals occur all the time under the table
Nothing new with Kawhi. Whether it's Aspiration or the Clippers, he is still a no-show.
No show job, what is this? The Sopranos and the esplanade project?
Lmfao at ben simmons catching strays, even angel reese caught one at the end
Of course it was a salary cap thing.
If this is allowed to happen. EVERY team should set up a LLC, and sponsor their star players with the LLC. Save on salary cap.
I want my Lakers to extend Austin Reeves for cheap. Give him 15m per under salary, and sponsor him for 20m per.
ITS 48 MIL, NOT 28. there were stock options involved. SO BALMER INVESTED 48 MIL AND PAID 48 MIL TO KAWAHI. THAT MAKES A TON OF SENSE TO ME
My thoughts are that Ballmer set up Aspiration to pay off Kawhi. But they tried to scam more money out of the deal.
So Ballmer didn’t know he was exposed. He probably would have thought it was handled. And the company might not even wanted to tell them
He's lying youll knows this
Simmons/Reese shoot off would be hilarious.
