EXPECTATIONS – Ace Bailey’s Rookie Year, how to JUDGE it | Other NBA Great Rookie Years

David Locke, radio voice of the Utah Jazz and Jazz NBA Insider, explores the expectations for rookie Ace Bailey in his first NBA season. Locke emphasizes the importance of intangible qualities like maturity, energy, and basketball knowledge over raw statistics. He compares Bailey’s potential rookie performance to other high-profile draft picks, suggesting fans should anticipate inefficient shooting percentages but look for growth in other areas.

The podcast delves into the Utah Jazz’s roster outlook, discussing potential lineups and the roles of players like Walker Kessler, Lauri Markkanen, and Jusuf Nurkic. Locke speculates on the team’s strategy for the upcoming season, including the possibility of playing without a traditional center at times. He also touches on EuroBasket performances, particularly Markkanen’s recent struggles, and previews an upcoming NBA top 100 players list, questioning where Jazz players might rank.

  1. As long as he is trying on the defense end, I dont mind if ace takes the fade away stepback with three defenders on him as an open lauri stands in the corner.

However, I will lose my mind if he plays like Keyonte on defense

  2. David's comments leads us to how great Magic Johnson and Larry Bird were. In Bird's rookie year Boston's wins rose from 21 to 60 and Bird was rookie of the year. The same year Magic was MVP of the NBA finals. The unquestioned best players in the league was Bird and Magic. MJ could not do that, Lebron could not do that, the only ones close were Kareem and Wilt.

  3. Haven't listened yet, but going to laugh when I hear you say "You guys…rookies aren't good" again

  4. The Jazz are a mess. To use a baseball expression: "Danny Ainge has lost his fastball." The Jazz are like Moses, they will be wandering in the wilderness for another 40 years.

  5. Taylor Hendricks was terrible before the injury, and I don’t see him ever becoming a rotation player after this injury. He lacked effort, understanding, and skill in his rookie season. He shouldn’t see the NBA floor this year. He should get his bearings in the G League.

I think we will see a lot of Nurkic as backup center, and he may even start some games. Filipowski will be a wing, and MAYBE play some five out. But not much. Not in this landscape, maybe a few years ago.
