Golden State Warriors Push to Extend Jonathan Kuminga | Contract Talks Update 2025

The Golden State Warriors are making a serious push to lock in forward Jonathan Kuminga with a new contract extension ahead of the 2025 NBA season. With Golden State facing tough luxury tax restrictions, the team’s front office views retaining Kuminga as a top priority.

According to NBA insider Anthony Slater, there have been genuine efforts this week to finalize the deal after weeks of uncertainty. The urgency reportedly increased following Josh Giddey’s $100M extension with the Chicago Bulls, which set a new market benchmark for young talent.

Unlike Giddey, Kuminga’s role with the Warriors remains in question — whether he becomes a consistent starter or continues as a rotational piece. This makes the negotiations more complex.

Currently, Kuminga holds a one-year qualifying offer worth $7.9 million, but talks have included a potential two-year, $45 million extension. If he accepts the qualifying offer, Kuminga could enter unrestricted free agency in 2026, giving him more control over his future. For the Warriors, however, securing Kuminga long-term provides stability and keeps their Western Conference playoff hopes alive.

With training camp approaching, this decision will shape not only Kuminga’s development but also Golden State’s chances of contending alongside Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson.
