Karl-Anthony Towns ADDRESSES Defensive Issues! McBride Takes Shot At Former Coach | Knicks News
Karl-Anthony Towns had one of the best debut seasons in Knicks history, becoming an All-Star again (first with NY) all at the same time. There are many positives to take away from KAT’s first year with the Knicks but also one major issue to understand to…. defense. Towns’ defense is his worst trait on the basketball court and he addressed that in a recent interview. Deuce McBride has also been speaking with the media and he didn’t hold back when giving his thoughts on Tom Thibodeau’s lack of creativity with the roster… Troy Mahabir breaks all of this down!

Everybody in the NBA, including Knicks players knows that KAT is flat-footed on defense.
That's not good for KAT, he has to train himself on defense hard this season.
Deuce have comments for Thibs usage. Wait until he gets 6 minutes a game under Brown. Log jam at the guard position. All eyes on Deuve when he ask to be traded.
DEUCE IS RIGHT…GOOD RIDDANCE
KAT is visualizing A chip! He’ll I’m visualizing having Jay-Z money. Is that going to happen. Nope!!!! KAT needs to makie the necessary adjustments to help the Knicks win a chip: play defense, and post up smaller players instead of thinking he’s Steph Curry and shooting unnecessary 3’s.
Any ideas who may be involved in that win now trade? Seems like Deuce will be vital to the offense and isn't going anywhere. Who else could a package be centered around to push the needle?
Kat needs to play better defense.
We're going to the ship I could feel it we got a very good team I smell the championship. what's up Troy are you ready for the ship let's go New York 👍
I have NEVER seen Brunson have a good defensive game. But yall don't say shit. We did not trade for kat for his defense. Yall need to stop all this crying.
It's all about team defense not just one player. Can Brunson stay in front of his man?Should be the question
The Knicks could easily play good defense last year, if HC Thibs haven't overworked the Knicks starters and less playing time for the bench players.
This season HC Mike Brownn will do the opposite of HC Thibs.
HC Mike Brown will have every Knicks players to get playing time, so nobody doesn't gets tired.
Love to hear this !
At this oint in his career KAT is who he is defensively. He's slow footed and often out of position, but that's been him his entire career. He's likely not going to get better
THIBS relied on jb and Kat now the Knicks will use the whole team.
Deuce starting helps kat on defense juts watch and learn in preseason I pray Mike brown plays lineups with deuce with the 4 other starters
The best thing for Kat defensively would be to limit picking up stupid fouls.
He’ll never be a defensive force, but if he can use his height to contest while not fouling, he’ll be in good shape
Also should sign Bol Bol. He could really become a fan favorite.
Players are doing a lot of talkin, they better do a lot of walking to back it up
Deuce McBride is obviously has a right to his opinion. He's correct about the offense being stagnant at times. The comment he made about " the one guy having the ball in his hands all the time" , should've kept that one to himself. Reason I say that because that one guy our starters Jalen Brunson, is the best playmaker on our team, and especially when you struggled to run the offense when the ball was put in your hands. I'm not saying he took a shot at Brunson, but just gotta be mindful when making certain comments
The comments about offense being stagnant is definitely true, but when Brunson and kolek are the only true pgs on the roster, and kolek barely played because defense was horrible, essentially Brunson was your only true playmaker. Hopefully brogdon works out, deuce McBride playmaking improves, and kolek can stay on the floor more with improved defense obviously
Coach Brown will do
Coach Brown will do whatever damn coach in the history of basketball have done , play the players that are producing ! it is time to support our team ,and not to be so critical . when you are a talented offensive player ,the defense may suffer , that is just the way it is . will we still need a more offensively talented guard to start on the side of Brunson.
BRUNSON AINT 7ft
Jump rope kat and get balance asap
Keep making videos my friend
Why you say it like KAT lying about not knowing Troy lol, even if he knew, what was he supposed to do? & McBride didn't throw shade on Thibs, the way you made it sound was like he said Thibs never rest the starters & gave others opportunities or some. Had me hyped like McBride was really saying some 🤦🏿♂️. Saying & doing is two different things. KAT needs to stop with all the 3's & be a dominant force inside, remember that year LeBron & Wade stop shooting 3's & became unstoppable? Yea, KAT can be a force to be reckoned with, gimme 10 points inside then you can step out & shoot a good look from 3, no more then 4 attempts per game he should get but they should be from open or drive & kicks in rhythm after he's already made inside buckets. If you let him, he'll be chucking em like Steph, that ish painful to watch, just look at Boston who took over for GSW in that category🤦🏿♂️
Yo Troy you know what it tells me if Mike brown and Deuce been in constant communication it will tell me that maybe he might start instead of Mitch 😂😂😂 I’m not even lying
Maybe deuce knows he gonna start which is why he’s hyped
Defense is a Frame of Mind!! Its Hard to Teach, and It Needs to Be inside if You!
You can Be Big and Strong , and Still not have a Defensive Mentality! And You Can Learn Defense , and Improve Technically , but unless Your Aggressive , and Not Intimidated, easily , you Will Just Be Average!
Kat Has Not Shown Defense , in his Career !
kat needs alot of legwork and some lower back its all connected to pop on the lateral movement and play defense with his feet and keeping up with players; some of the best defenders have tree trunks for legs solid steel. They put that lower body work in, not just run on a treadmill; many muscles are in the legs and lower back connected
Deuce McBride was definitely right. KAT was wrong. Yes, he was good on offense. However he wasn't as good as he could have been. That's one of the reasons that Thibs was fired.
On offense Thibs could have had KAT: stand in the mid range / high post & pass either to guys on the perimeter or back to the center at the basket, do more pick n' rolls, do more ally oops, set screens, get the ball on the run to the rim for easy baskets which would have limited his tendency to knock guys down, learn pivot moves, use head fakes, pass out of the post to guys that were cutting rather than forcing up a shot, etc. That would have led to more trips to the line and a higher scoring & assist average for KAT.
Deuce McBride was right.
Thibs tended to overplay the starters and 2 of the bench players which caused some of them to rest on defense at times. The Knicks also had one of the slowest paces in the NBA under Thibs which means that it was easier for opposing players to defend them. The faster you are, the harder you are to defend. That's why it was so hard to stop Derrick Rose, Dwyane Wade, Monta Ellis, Chris Paul and others in their prime. They weren't just good, they were fast and pushed the pace. Golden State also mixed a faster pace and good defense which is why it was weird that Thibs didn't seem to believe it could be done.
The offense was definitely more stagnant because Thibs wasn't pushing the players to: speed up the pace, get out in transition which would have allowed them to get to the other team's basket before defenders could set back up, move well without the ball so that guys could pass it without getting turnovers / having it stolen by defenders, set screens to make it easier for guys with the ball to get off a shot, pass faster out of double teams, pass faster in general, do more ally oops, do more pick n' rolls and score in the mid range area…not just launching 3s.
If the offense is repetitive and defenders can guess where the ball is going to go or who it's going to go to…then it's far easier to defend the players. And if the center barely gets the ball (Mitchell Robinson made a good point last year) then the team will be playing 4 on 5…meaning the guy with the ball can be double teamed.
I agree with KAT on Mike Brown and reinventing himself. Definitely. That's one of the reasons I hadn't wanted them to trade Julius Randle in order to pick him up. However I like his willingness to accept criticism and work on his game. I also like his desire to be straight with the fans. Not only that, I like his support for the new coach as well and his willingness to change his game in order to fit Mike Brown's new system.
Yes…on defense he has to get better. In some ways I think he will be. Why? Mike Brown: won't be overplaying the starters, will be using more guys off the bench, will be speeding up the pace which will tire the opposing teams on defense so that they won't have as much energy to score on offense, will be mixing up the offense which will result in more tired legs on the opposing team, will use guys in their natural position…allowing them to defend opposing players more effectively, will hide guys on offense or have guys on the perimeter to slow down guys trying to run into the paint…making them easier to defend and will be teaching players to defend (without fouling) as he did in Cleveland rather than expecting them to already know how to do so.
On defense, KAT should watch Ron Artest (Metta World Peace) and Tim Duncan. Both watched to see when the player passed the ball to his stronger / dominant hand…which sometimes indicated that he was going to attack the basket, pass or shoot. They also didn't lean on people in an obvious way all the time and didn't do wild swings…which can lead to fouling or the other guy jumping into their hand ("drawing a foul").
Neither of those 2 guys were particularly fast on defense but were both were clearly effective. Ron Artest was a guy who could really steal the ball as well. But KAT doesn't have to do that or be great at that. However he can focus on where the other guy's eyes are looking, who is open, if anyone is open, which hand the guy has the ball in, where the baseline is, what type of player he's defending (meaning what his skills are), etc. Part of defense is knowing who your opponent is. It's also moving your feet…not just your arms.
What type of KAT will we get this year? Just like I thought that Julius Randle was the 2nd coming of Zach Randolph (except with a better ability to give assists & get out in transition), I think under Mike Brown that KAT can be the 2nd coming of Anthony Davis (in his prime in New Orleans) if he works on both sides of his game.
I think Deuce McBride was feeling that under Thibs, the defensive style benefited him. However on offense the slower pace and half court side was not his game. Why? Well because Deuce is athletic. A faster pace would allow him to: drive more, get to the rim quicker and avoid defenders (speed would keep them guessing where the ball would go next and the lane more open). Getting out in transition would allow him to get easy baskets and even more dunks before the opposing team's players got back. It would also have given him more trips to the line (free throws) and more steals as well.
And wait…what? How is the Denver Nuggets ahead of the Knicks? Didn't the Knicks beat them last season and the season before? Also didn't they lose to the Minnesota Timberwolves last year? So how are they ahead of everyone except Cleveland and OKC? In my opinion, they should be behind the Knicks. I would also suggest that the Knicks should be at least even with Cleveland. Why? They added more firepower to their bench (though I do believe that Thibs didn't play them enough), they're likely going to be scoring more effectively as a team (ex: Mikal Bridges, KAT, Deuce, Josh Hart, Mitch, Ariel Hukporti…maybe even OG Anunoby) and they've been together for an additional season.
I'm sure he heard this when he was in Minnesota and nothing changed since then.
KAT knows a Giannis trade looms over him next offseason. The only way he stays on the Knicks is if he can prove that he is a better fit for the team than Giannis, a tall order that will be highly dependent on his ability to shore up his weaknesses, mainly on defense. I think he will be keenly aware of that every time he steps out on that court next season.
Deuce is right about Thibs. Maybe he will have a better season if he’s not traded
PEACE AND LOVE TROY ❤️ 😍 💖 ❣️ 💕
He is the defensive liability. Brunson isn’t good but Towns be looking like he not even trying lol
