Dennis Smith Jr. did not play in Mavs vs. Thunder so mavs GM Nico Harrison wanted to bring in another veteran guard option to compete while also retaning Banton’s NBA G-League rights. You need shooters to space the floor, so it doesn't make sense to start another paint player with Coop. You need to play to the players' strengths. Anyway, the team as a whole has to be good, not just the starting lineup. Klay needs to start to get going, but PJ will end up having more minutes. This way, you can space out Klays' minutes better so he stays fresh when he comes in. PJ will end up playing with Coop and most likely be on the floor together at the ends of games, which is what really matters. Kid will try and get the most out of Klay, keeping his minutes low and the defense of opposing teams guessing on match-ups. If not Klay will get exposed.

I say rotate starters at the 3 (flag and PJ) and 5 ( Gafford and D live)
Flag could also start some games at the 2 in rotation with Klay. It really depends on the chemistry and who’s on the other side of the ball. Look at these roles like CD lamb said about Pickins “it’s not WR1 and WR2… It’s 1A and 1B”

I am going to make some people upset because this was just a pre season game, but I like this style of offense better than just Luka dribbling around. I said it. But ball movement gets everyone involved and leads to easier baskets. Luka is a great 1 on 1 playmaker, no doubt… but I like ball movement leading to open shots. That is so Dirk era.
Well see about Banton. However the Mavericks have needed bigger athletic guards since trading away Luka. Nico could have traded Hardy for Svi Mykhailiuk but of course he only wants black players on his team. Svi Mykhailiuk like Banton has size can defend multiple positions. Not sure what Banton's shootings percentages are but hopefully he makes the team or the Legends.

Klay isn't coming off the bench because if he does, their second unit will lack firepower. At least PJ can carry for a bit. Him and Max can lead the bench. Klay is unfortunately done. He'll have some great games here and there but he's no longer elite as a shooter and a defender.
