yo ben
Love you guys
I've watched every game, video and read every story about Green since he joined the NBA. Here's why Jalen Green will take a step up on the Suns:
1) Jalen Green is an almost-40% catch and shooter on 3's. He's amazing at catch and shoot (off ball) and SUCKS at pull ups (on-ball, 32%). We were waiting forever for a veteran 1A scorer to appear while Jalen is developing so Jalen didn't have to be guarded by the best opponent defender every single game. With Booker on board, he will draw the best wing defender and Green will for the first time ever face the 2nd best defender. Green is no longer going to have to take ever contested, distant or difficult 3PT shot in the offense. He won't have to take 8-9 3PA. He will get down to about 6 attempts and they will be more open than ever. Expect better than 35% from 3 – especially since he's been sharpening his jumper mechanics this summer.
2) For the first time in his career he will have a lob threat on his pick and rolls. For the first time in his career, he will even have stretch 5 options at C. For the first time in his career he won't be playing in the 2nd most clogged paint in the NBA. You can't name another player who went through 4 consecutive years of among the most clogged paints in the NBA. At times we had 2-3 non-shooters sharing the floor with him. It's not reasonable and no other coach will suffocate the paint for their wings in the way Udoka has done to the Rockets and previously the Celltics. Jalen Green was always supposed to be a first-step downhill guy. He had to shelve that for the Rockets and take TONS of extra jumpers in order to fit in Udoka's offense (Udoka is famously a bad offensive coach). He's going to get to the line a lot more – just like when he was skinnier and younger and went to the line 6 times a game in his second season. Less 3's, more FT's. You will already see a bump in efficiency because he's simply better at drives.
3) Jalen Green was one of the worst defenders in the NBA before Udoka. In his first season under Udoka, he became below average. In his second season under Udoka, he became average. This is not the behavior of a chucker who doesn't care about winning. Udoka defended his defense multiple times last season. He's especially good at harassing quick smaller players. He has put on more muscle now. You're going to get a barely plus defender Jalen Green and for the first time in his career – he will have a very good rim protector to support his defense. Previously, the best rim protector he ever played significant minutes with was Alperen Sengun.
4) Here is the list of people who, without being asked, have mentioned how hard Jalen works in the summer or after a bad stretch of games: HS coach, G-League Coach, G-League teammates, the Rockets first HC, the Rockets second HC, the starting PG, the backup PG, the lead Rockets assistant coach (Royal Ivey). Every time Jalen Green had a bad week, he was in the gym the same night and on the phone with Royal Ivey asking questions about film. This dude is a hard worker according to EVERYONE and they don't have to say these things if they're not asked. Among people who know him, they say he works hard. I don't know who made up this illusion of a chucker who doesn't care about basketball and is lazy but I guarantee you it's objectively false. There was a 2-month period under Silas towards the end where Green stopped playing proper defense and working hard – as did every single other player on the roster vets and youngins. The entire roster was depressed from forced losses and no vet mentors for 2 straight years. We also did absolutely nothing in the Silas years to develop him so really his development started just 2 years ago under Udoka. Ott is receiving an NBA player.
5) First ever playoff experience against Kerr, Dray, Curry. He got punched in the face figuratively. That experience alone is important to all young players.
Congrats Suns fans. You received an asset whose value was artificially dipping really badly. I'm not saying he'll suddenly become a superstar but he will be worth all of his salary after he gets used to the team.
Ben all of your guests give better takes than you. You have to do better lol. Good show
Jason is the GOAT. Nobody covers the whole league better.
I just don't think you are following the Rockets well if you compare Green to Kuminga.
Green was in a team where he had to attack point of attack defenses off the dribble surrounded by non shooters where spacing was 90s era.
A experienced refined star offensive player like KD can overcome that but a 22 year old? Nah.
Again Sengun and Green had the same exact scoring efficiency last season and Green did it on higher volume yet one is talked about as a savant future top ten player and the other is talked about like a glorified 6th man.
Kuminga was in a completely diffrent situation on a team with excellent spacing, excellent off ball movement and excellent playmakers where Kuminga had an easier role of play finishing more often.
I’ve said it in doses but the culture and the unknowns about this group give me 2020/2021 vibes. But instead of Paul leading a group of young pups, it’s Book and Brooks paving the way a very underrated squad.
Jalen Green probably has a bigger chip in his shoulder than Book. He was drafted to be the man in Houston – had mad love for his city in which he was outspoken, then gets JETTISONED for KD.
This team will hover the 40 win plateau but will definitely be a tough out.
Ben, I'm not trying to be mean but you look like a slob. You are developing a huge platform and I like listening to you. You seem like a good guy. I have a hard time taking you seriously when you look like you just climbed out of bed. The backwards hat thing has gotta go. Dress for success. Perception is reality.
idk suns have 3 really good SGs
