Raptors send a loud message to RJ & Ochai + Blue Jays advance to finals for the first time in 32 yrs

The extension deadline for RJ Barrett and Ochai Agbaji quietly passed on Sunday and Monday brought no news. Toronto has a lot of reasons to slow-play this, not the least of which are their uncertainties about the future fit of these two players, their continued evaluation of Gradey, Jamison, CMB and Ja’Kobe (all wings, all on rookie deals), their expensive starting five, their tax situation, and most importantly, their need to maintain roster flexibility.

Toronto is asking Ochai and RJ to bet on themselves effectively, and unless a wink-wink floor has been established for both to re-sign next summer, it’s never a huge sign of faith to let a deadline like yesterday’s pass.

  1. Hey Rob I saw a Potential trade of Josh Hart & Mitchell Robinson for RJ, what do you think? Would you do it?

I think many people do this deal but Barretts numbers of 21pts, 6.3 rbs & 5.4 assists would be sorely missed.

Also, I honestly think fair value for RJ would be something like 4 years $100 mill.

The problem with RJ is that he has become a much improved player in Toronto than in NY, some team will definetely pay him more out there, so the Raptors should decide sooner rather than later whether they want to keep him or not.

We shouldn't wait too late to trade him & get nothing back for him like we did for Siakam

  2. As a raptors fan I always hope all our players excel but gotta keep it real if rj was so good he’d be valued around the league but unfortunately he isn’t. So he is a good player and could be a great sixth man if he’d accept the role but he isn’t a star player atm

  3. An astute assessment of self. Really appreciate this comment. I like following great analysis but love even more being a fan. WRT basketball, I want to remain a fan, not an analyst. And I will never be a spectator. Those folks are fickle at best or mean spirited trolls.

  4. That was such an interesting insight about analyst vs fan. Explains a lot about many interactions you’ve had!

  5. 47:56 – Raptors home opener falls on the same day game 1 of the World Series.
I hope that energy downtown kicks into high gear.

  6. 58:25 – The way RJ currently plays offence, if he had Ochai's level defence, what do you think his contract would look like?

  7. As a fellow newyorker. We did underate RJ and overate IQ. Rj definitely needs to focus on defense. He will make his money doing that. He leads his draft class in points. Free throws and defense needs improvement.

  8. I did not appreciate the caller who kept interrupting and changing the subject whenever you were proving him wrong.

  9. Realistically, the reason there is a wall for RJ is because everyone in the arena knows that if he's not open, he's driving to the net. He's too predictable. Imo, his best role would be ball handler off the bench. He doesn't have gravity off the ball, and he's not a good defender. He's also awful when it comes to efficiency. Games where he drops 30, he's taking 30 shots. That's not good, lol. The funny part is he'd be amazing off the bench, and I'd love to keep him

  10. Hey Rob, you should try running an Ethernet cable from your modem to your PC. It will provide a way more secure connection than wi-fi. I'm on a 1.5gbps line but my computer on wi-fi only gets ~ 30mbps When plugged in via Ethernet I maintain a solid 1.5gbps. Give it a go if you haven't already tried!

  11. Always enjoy your show and insight into you and basketball!!!!

Only part that brought me down was choosing Messi over Ronaldo….lol but I’m biased most of family is from Portugal

Looking forward to your future Blue Jays Channel. Lol

  12. Enjoyed this guy’s perspective, can’t wait till the season starts and rj shuts up all these fake rap fans who started watching after 2019, lemme know when shaedon sharpe and toumani can play pg and give you 21,6 and 5, the ppl who voted on that poll are your brainwashed bots

  13. What do you think your audience breakdown is for those hardcore basketball fans or fans who just want the Raptors to do well? I am more on the side of I hope Raps do well side of things.

  14. The truth about RJ is just kinda tough if your a fan of the guy which being a 20/6/5 guy on the raps there's gonna be a lot of.. the 2 and number on a stat line should really be the defensive rating would give a much more wholistic representation of a player

  15. Also Penn the way you handled yourself with Shannon is how you gotta handle the chat was actually really informative for how much "why we need to trade RJ" content there is out there that conversation was more insightful! Lol great vid and convo tho man keep it up

  16. Props to Shannon for answering the call (or I guess placing the call haha). He did his best to defend RJ, and it will be no bad thing if he turns out to be at least more right than some might think..

On the Scottie front though all I will say is that I think he’ll shut up the haters.

Rooting for the Jays.. I follow baseball a bit and they’re my team (second favorite happens to be the Dodgers .. I even saw them in LA when I was down there.) Playoff baseball is for sure exciting.

All sports are a little different — there is subtle strategy in baseball with pitch selection, matchups, defensive positioning .. ext I guess, but being no expert I’d say the truth in a lot of the individual offensive and defensive play is more apparent/accessible.

In basketball you can have a guy scoring 25 points, and then have to explain why 1/4 of your team’s output in a losing game wasn’t so helpful and maybe that player is part of the reason they lost because they were inefficient and their help defense/rotations were consistently bad ..😂

Nevertheless basketball remains my favorite sport — I appreciate the complexity and I do think it can be appreciated a lot on both levels of fan and “analyst”

  17. Something that is special about this Blue Jays team is the absence of selfish play. The players all want to go out and perform, but they don’t do it at the expense of their teammates. They hit the ball in play instead of taking huge swings and striking out a lot. The team just wants to do what it takes to win.
Fun stat, the Jays have 49 comeback wins this season (of 101 total W’s), which led all of MLB.
