GOOD and BAD Takeaways from Celtics vs 76ers | Garden Report

CLNS Media’s Noa Dalzell & Bobby Manning react to the Celtics’ Season opening nail bitting 117-116 loss to the 76ers. Derrick White & Jaylen Brown both lead the Celtics in scoring with 25 Points, but neither took the final shot with Payton Pritchard taking the final 2 shots missing both shots. The 76ers were lead by monster performances from their young guards Tyrese Maxey and Rookie VJ Edgecombe. Maxey finished the game with 40 points in the victory while the rookie Edgecombe made NBA history droping 34 Points in his NBA debut were the most in an NBA Debut since Wilt Chamberlain score 43 in 1959.

  1. These two are terrific together. Looking forward to following them all year. Two very good analysts that work well as a team.

  2. My biggest takeaway was the coaching. That was the weirdest basketball I've ever seen played in the NBA. They were rotating players out, like what was said on the broadcast, "hockey style". But basketball is not hockey. There was no trust in the players out there to heat up. It's the first game of the season. Why pull guys after a couple of minutes? Basketball is about rythem. Joe did not allow these guys to gather a rythem out there. D White eventually found it, of course. He's a pro. And then on the last play, with what, 7 seconds left? Joe wanted them to run the court? Thank god JB called a time out. But still, the last play was a terrible play. Give the ball to D White to shoot a three or JB for a one on one. Like, basketball is a simple game. It's talent vs talent. There's no reason to get heady in it. Joe got way to heady with this game plan. Crazy game as a home opener. It felt like a pre-season game.

  3. Positives:

JB looked good, played pretty well. The mid- and long-term viability of this team depends upon the health of JT JB. All things considered, JB looks good, not 100pc, but good. It was hardly great news that he had an injury in his hamstring, but he was in surgery a few months ago. All in all, I think things look pretty encouraging for him.

And! there was no signs of that invisible man who follows JB around and keeps swatting the ball out of his hands. His ball security so far this year has been better than it's ever been.

PP played well. Coming into the season there were legit concerns abt whether PP could be a starting pg. He and DW had the acid test with Edge and Maxey and both played well. The two 6ers scored a lotta points but the game was played almost exclusively through them. They got past the defense only a few times, mostly they just shot the lights out.

Queta played well. There were concerns about him too. He didn't get tested the way the backcourt was, nevertheless, he played pretty well.

    Negatives:

1, This team is bad. It's just one game but they played a very bad team an lost. Embiid was in the game but didn't actually play so the Cs were 5 on 4 for long stretches of the game and still lost.

2, Play the rookies or send them to Maine. They should be playing, not sitting.

3, The Sweet Joe Mazzulla persona didn't last long. Luka Garza lay bleeding and concussed and his coach screams "get up" from the sidelines. You've gotta be kidding! What is wrong with this freak? Has he no human decency? I'm becoming increasingly convinced that this is not the guy you want rebuilding this team, and for multiple reasons. I hope the next time he yells "get up" or snaps his fingers at one of his players they leave him bloodied and concussed on the floor.

  4. From a strategic point of view, Maxey, with 5 fouls, should have forced the 6th foul…. They lost the game through their own fault, they had two possessions at the end to score or force a foul, since they were in the bonus….

  5. With 8 seconds left in the game and the Celtics down by one, Mazzulla is the only NBA coach who doesn't want to take a time out in that scenario. This speaks volumes to his incompetence. It says he has little confidence he can set up an ATO that's better than a defense the opposing coach can set up. Anyone ever seen an NBA coach with worse ATOs ? I will celebrate when Mazzulla is gone. He's gonna be exposed big time this year.

  6. Bobby where the Celtics veryone going to come at us hard😊 like they do but we have Experience guys mixed with some guys that still need to fine there way but have a up side

  7. I'm not worried about the players I'm worried about that coach that's in over his head he blew this game😢

  8. Coach M is smart for rotating players like he does for fresh legs like Phil Jackson used to do. The difference is that he needs to get his guards to pass to the Bigs like Garza Queta and Tillman. Until they get their Bigs involved it’s going to be a long season. Queta can score under, Garza is amazing in the paint, and Tillman looks good under as well. Gotta get these guys involved and they can go far. With guard only hog the ball style basketball they don’t even make the playoffs
