Wembanyama is Making NBA History: The STATS That Prove He’s An Offensive Unicorn

Wembanyama is Making NBA History: The STATS That Prove He’s An Offensive Unicorn

Victor Wembanyama is doing stuff we’ve never seen before…and the Spurs are already reshaping the offense around him.

Nekias Duncan and Steve Jones dig into how San Antonio is deploying Wemby, what to do against constant doubles, and why the defense looks elite with him on the floor. They also spotlight the young guards — how downhill pressure, free throws and quick reads are giving the Spurs a real identity early.

What happens when teams get more film? Can the Spurs grind through “no-advantage” possessions? And when does Wemby’s playmaking dial back up as defenses adjust?

Drop your take in the comments: What’s the best way to guard Wembanyama—doubling or living with 1-on-1?

  1. It’s not just his talent it’s his basketball IQ watch him on defense he bends over hiding behind his teammates and then times his blocks. He uses his foot speed to get open in post ups he doesn’t even have to bang for post position because he’s already at the spot..

  2. Wemby has a MJ-Kobe killer attitude. He has stated "Defense is non-negotiable" so KJ better play defense b/c the Spurs are returning to the roots they had under Pop. NBA needs a new defensive category: "Potential Blocks"…like they have assists in the NHL.

  3. If Wemby had played as long as Duncan in the glory days, then CIA Pop with Robinson-Wemby-Manu-Parker would have won many more titles than just five. Only two issues will stop Wemby from winning 6+ rings: 1) health; or 2) average teammates and coaching.

  4. At this pace, Wemby will only need 10 healthy seasons to prove he is the GOAT.

    Q: Is Twin Towers 2.0 – Wemby-Kornet – better than the original Duncan-Robinson?

  5. My concern is the coaching. I've been saying Mitch Johnson is too stoic to be a coach in this league. He is not an alpha male coach like CIA Pop.
We saw over SIX MONTHS last season the G-League Mitch was not good. We'll see if this season is different or that Sean Sweeney is the next Spurs head coach-in-waiting.

  6. Spurs will be playing up tempo this season with a new offensive scheme: Attacking big guards finishing or kicking out to shooters.
Wemby saw his mortality when he looked Death in the face last February. An experience like that changes most peoples perspective on life. Pray to Christ the King that Wemby has 15+ seasons of health, although it will only take 10 seasons to prove he is the GOAT. The Militia Guy has two words of advice for the young man: Stay humble.

  7. Excellent pod. Not a lot of silly showmanship, but instead engaging and very thoughtful analysis. 10/10

To the comment on Wemby's on/off splits, remember that Fox, Sochan, and now Kornet are injured. That's when Fox comes back, that will likely push Champs to the bench, so the backup squad should look like Harper, Johnson, Champs, Sochan, and Kornet. That should be I ng their bench net rating up by a point or two, at least,, and make Wemby's help look a bit better.

  8. You have to bother the handle far from the rim…that's the only way, now he is still good, but that's the one thing where you can say "he is good for a big"… everything else, he is just good at, but that's the one thing, the ball has to bounce longer…if you attack him when he has full control of a ball you have lost, speed him up…he is still 22 and the dribble is live a little longer…he has an advantage everywhere else and other options are dependent on the team. He can never be shorter, so he has to improve other skills, but that one thing…he can never be stronger than me in potential live dribble at 7'5…he's a foot taller than the average NBA player
