The Dallas Mavericks are the biggest disaster in the entire league – I mean the Pelicans suck and gave away next year’s pick, and the Nets are one of the worst NBA teams of the decade, and the Kings are really sad again…
But the Mavs situation is SOMEHOW… so much worse than even those teams
They traded away Luka Doncic – beloved by the fanbase, a young perennial MVP candidate, less than a year removed from an NBA Finals appearance – to acquire Anthony Davis which effectively shrunk their championship window down to 2 to 3 years
And in their first full season after the trade – they are one of the worst teams in the entire Western conference.

They do have their 2026 1st. They can let the unintentional tanking happen this year, find somewhat of a rotation player in the lottery, have Flagg just get experience and show up next year giving one shot to this core. Also maybe if they fire Nico now, a new GM could get some deals in the summer to better retool the team

You have COOPER FLAGG.
You develop Cooper as your "point guard" and you tank. You keep Dereck Lively II, and you have the ability to trade Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, Daniel Gafford, PJ Washington, and maybe Klay Thompson.
You gain draft assets and create cap space.
All you need to do to build a great team around Flagg-Lively is develop Cooper into a superstar and find elite 3&D role players while Flagg & Lively are still on rookie contracts.

Mavs drafted cooper Flagg who’s elite in playing as a small forward. Not playing at point guard and being floor general.

If you think the NBA did not rig the draft lottery to get Luka to the Lakers you are foolish. They've done this 3 times alone for LA teams. CP3 gets traded to Clippers from the hornets, boom they get #1 overall for AD. AD gets traded to lakers, boom Pelicans get #1 overall again for Zion. Now Luka gets traded to LA and boom, #1 overall to Dallas. There was a 4th time this happened where a team losing a top player gets #1 overall and it was when Lebron left Cleveland for the Heat and they used it to get Kyrie. Copper was part of this trade. It was AD, Max Christie and 1st and Copper Flag for Luka and Maxi.
I'm not even exaggerating when i say this, this move set back the Mavs by decades. This trade has done irreparable damage and the only way to fix it is through a complete revolution. I think Coop is eventually going to be a good player, but the Mavs will not have the arsenal to back him up, cause they have little to no picks and assets. Their major asset was Luka and they traded him for a bag of chips and a half eaten sandwich.
The Mavs should rebuild around Cooper Flaggg and trade the Klay, AD and etc because they are not winning a championship anytime soon. They don't have a first round pick until 2031.

I thought Cooper Flagg was way too overrated as a #1 prospect.
